Numbness in left side of left thigh

Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve dysfunction - very common following rapid weight loss (or weight gain). Harmless but annoying. Don't cross your legs, that can make it worse.
  2. Get your notes out from surgery and go back to basics, get an app for tracking food - like Baritastic or myfitnesspal. Your surgeon's office can help find a therapist, or just make a dietician/checkup appointment. Don't be embarrassed - just start. Some physicians prescribe weight loss meds or other appetite suppressants for 3 months to get you jump started. Do whatever you have to in order to start being accountable. Dump the junk out, pour dish soap on it in the trash - you already bought it, so the money is gone don't let it cost you weight gain too. Then go shopping for some protein and vegetables, get a new fancy water bottle.....you can do it, you HAVE done it before.
  3. Yep! The weight gain progression there is so familiar it's a stereotype. And boy howdy is it familiar!

Perspectives on Losing Fast & Slow

I totally relate to the frustration of stalls and even periods of weight gain that this graph shows. I found something that helped me deal with it the last time I was losing weight. There’s an app called a Happy Scale that uses statistical averaging to show you what your weight loss would be if you factored out the bloated days, etc. It gives you a smooth curve on the graph. It helped me a lot.
  5. So obviously I have a bad back. Ive been out of work for 3 plus years because of it. I am/was a flooring contractor and because of all the heavy lifting and tearing up of old floors etc. it took a toll on my back. Not to mention as I got older the weight just packed on and as my back slowed me down the weight gain sped up. Along with a bad back and hopefully because of my weight I suffer from sciatica on both legs from hip to knees. I have newly acquired pain ( last year or so) in my hips knees and ankles. I can't walk more than a few feet without having major pain, standing up without leaning or holding the captian morgan pose is nearly impossible. I have weights and a stationary bike but have only used the bike a few times due to my knees and ankles being in pain. I have a strong feeling I could work through that pain if I could just get motivated. Regardless if you are a fellow back pain sufferer or not what can any of you recommend I do. I know there are tons of stretches for the back pain/sciatica but again lack the motivation. I know fitness plays a major roll in recovery and maintenance and I just don't want my back to hold me back. I am really hoping after surgery the pain will decrease to a point that I can at least do something. Thanx in advance for any advice!!!!

    Motherf&*^%$

This happens! It's happened to me but it isn't true weight gain. Do you know the gargantuan amount of calories that you'd have to eat in order to truly gain that? It's probably just water or whatever. I remember when I had my last check in appointment and discovered I had lost a whopping 6 inches off of my waist and I was down in the dumps because I felt I wasn't making progress. Hang in there!

    Frustrated

Ahh yes it’s crazh though @Matt Z I intake between 300-500 calories per day and I mean I know I work it off. I’m walking 2 miles a day and 2-4 times hitting up the gym for my cardio. And of course sleeping burns like 700-800 calories😂 i know it’s still early in the game for me but I hit the ground running after my surgery and this little stall and only 1lb per week thing is killing me !!! Maybe your gaining muscle. That has happened to me in the past we’re I was gaining muscle and losing inches. So that little weight gain your having isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

    1 week post op rny

Thanks everyone. I don't see my Dr. Until 2 weeks post op so that's the 27th for me. They had advised me not to weigh myself at home because of the weight gain in the hospital from everything they pushed into me. I am excited to see the numbers when it happens. I notice my face slimming out and my collar bone is more prominent.

    Smoking/Weight Gain

I feel your pain. Are you quitting bc the rule they have in place? If you're not made to quit not, bc your insurance says you have to , then I'd say, quit once you have the procedure not before. If your situation is like mine, you don't have that option. I had to pass a nicotine test for my insurance to cover my surgery and I had to b clean 6 weeks at least to pass nicotine for my insurance. I almost didn't get the surgery. When I learned that I had to quit and become a nonsmoker, I said to hell with that. I was a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker. I couldn't go an hour without a cigg and that in of itself was tough. I did it and yes, I gained a tad and was panicking bc hello, I dind't want them to think that I wasn't a good candidate for this surgery bc I was gaining each week a little . But if your doctor /surgeon is on board with you quitting, then he or she will or should understand, you are going to gain a little when you quit. But make sure they know you are quitting. Don't try to cheat the smoking thing and do it right before surgery, you could risk it being terminated... IF, if there is no nicotine test going to be done, Id say quit after surgery, that way you dont have to worry about them being hesitant bc of your weight gain. Make sense On the smoking and quitting, its tough, its the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but it CAN be done. I swear. Lots of gum. I bought straws cut them in half and used them to mimic the feeling of a cigg. I got on chantix and loads of sugar free gum. I even did therapy and I googled a ton of videos on YouTube. It helped The key to quitting is understanding that this " I am going to die if I don't have a cigg " will pass. Just don't cave in to the urge to go and pick up a cigg. IT will pass. The addiction tells us we will die or wont' make it if we don't have a smoke, but it's a lie I hope this information helps I quit on July 25, 2017. I did it early bc I wanted to give myself time for relapses before surgery date Dec 11, 2017. Fortunately, I never had one You can do this It's been almost 11 months for me. I miss it. You will always want a cigg. But.. the degree will pass Hugs, Joanna

    Endometriosis & Weight Loss

Sorry for the late response. My weight loss has been slow but steady. I too, packed on the pounds after my hysterectomy. Don’t get me wrong, I was overweight to start with but after the hysterectomy my weight gain went to a whole different level. Good luck with your VSG. July is almost here!!!
  11. So I'm very frustrated! I quit smoking 12 days ago and I'm doing the Nicorette gum. I've already gained back 3 lb of the seven I lost in the past two and a half months! I am so so so frustrated! My tentative procedure date is September 24th and I cannot gain any weight before the procedure! What do I do? HELP...
  12. Lately I have been thinking that this will never really be over for me. I have been reading about people who had bypass surgery many years ago and needed a "tune-up" or an over-stitch, which is apparently pretty simple and done on an out-patient basis. Personally, I would rather submit to some kind of surgery every ten years or so than further damage my body with out-of-control weight gain. At age 48, I am finally done beating myself up over this. I truly believe that if intelligence, my best effort and a powerful desire to do be healthy were enough, I would be at my goal weight without surgery right now. Best wishes to you all who are trying so hard to get this very heavy monkey off your back!

2 weeks post op, gained 1 pound..

You really shouldn't be doing creamed soups typically at all. They are generally very high in calories, carbs, fats, and sugars. You should stick to the list of foods they say you can have, and not venture out into other areas until you are cleared for them. Talk to your nutritionist about your diet and have them tell you want you need to be doing. Firstly, weight gain within the first 2 weeks isn't unheard of.... but lots of sleeve folks are on liquids only for the first month, I get that every doctor is going to be different, but you are also supposed to be on a restricted calorie intake, you should be tracking your proteins, water, etc. Give them a call and ask them how they feel about cream based soups. Are you tracking your protein intake? How much protein are you getting? Are you tracking your water intake? How much water are you getting a day? Are you exercising? How much exercise are you getting each day?

Pre-surgery (in 8 Days). Need Advice.

Congratulations on making it this far! My surgery is in 7 days and I am super excited. I know how you feel, when you have to hear the negative views and opinions of others. Don't let them break your spirit though. You are doing this surgery for you and not for them. Many people don't realize that it's not about what you eat that causes the weight gain. Emotions, stress, depression and mental well being contribute to weight as well. If the people that view your choice in a negative light can't be happy and supportive of you, then they obviously don't truly care about you. People that care, can see where you have struggled and will do their best to encourage, support and uplift you on this journey. I wish you much success on your journey!!!
  15. Figure out your BMR here https://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator (Your BMR is the amount of calories your body needs just to be alive, think in a coma, alive but not moving). And don't eat more than that per day and you should be fine. My current BMR is 2047, so barring any medication that causes weight gain etc, if I laid in bed all day and didn't consume 2047 calories, I'd be at a deficit and my body would be forced to use it's energy stores. Stay under your BMR if you can't exercise and you shouldn't have a problem with weight gain.

    Gaining weight back

I'm so sorry that you have to go thru this with your mom. It' is so hard to have your life changed and all out of whack too. I think you are very courageous> I also took care of my Mom and my Mother in Law in their last days. It was very hard to leave to go even to the store. You worry the whole time you are gone. Maybe you can go back to your basic program. I know it will be hard but you don't want your weight gains to continue. I would go back to measuring everything. Write everything you eat and drink down in a journal. It helps when you can actually, see where you are at. I don't know if this will help but good luck. BTW be sure you are getting your water and protein in.

    Serious Thoughts.....

I do truly believe that many people get the procedure due to wanting to get someone to notice or think that with this surgery their insecurities will be gone. Society has already made it a trend that smaller is best, instead of healthy is best. So that I believe is where people on here begin to obsess over the rate of weight loss even as little as 5-6 days out. This surgery WILL NOT...I repeat WILL NOT fix mental health issues. And recognizing depression or other mental struggles early in the process, I believe in the end will enhance the weight loss long term. Stress and other mental factors can cause weight gain, ultimately leaving the sleeve ineffective. I personally don’t think that all know they are suffering mentally until after the surgery. So a post op therapist should be something to consider.

Anxious - Lonely - No Friends to Support My Journey

I've had 100+ hours of therapy at http://mocsa.org a few years ago. I was of "normal" weight then. My weight gain took off after I fell down some steps and mangled my right ankle. I had one unsuccessful surgery on it. Later, two ankle reconstruction surgeons told me there was nothing more they could do. I was sedentary and very depressed after that. It doesn't help that I have an autoimmune thyroid condition. I'm not suggesting that more therapy might not help me but a sedentary lifestyle really derailed my ability to walk or do much in the way of weight-bearing exercise. It's been 10 years since I injured my ankle. Morphine is the only thing that even gets close to taking the edge off the pain. (And I tried many other non-narcotic meds first, plus holistic treatments. My PharmD daughter finally explained to me that being dependent on a narcotic for actual pain relief is different from being addicted to a drug when no physical malady is present.) Taking 300mg of morphine per day doesn't give me a "high"; it just helps me move around without writhing in pain. I also take oxycodone for breakthrough pain. Believe me, nobody WANTS to rely on powerful meds like these. It's weird to say, but I often welcome competing sources of pain (gallbladder surgery; lipoma removal, or even my knee replacements) to help keep my brain confused about where the pain is. I expect my bariatric surgery to be no different. There's nothing that my surgeon can do to my body that can overtake the pain I live with everyday. Boo-hoo me.
  20. weight gain and loss is driven by hormones and men and women have a very different mix going on inside. This will have an effect on the pace of weight loss. Nothing fair about it but you can't change biology. If he keeps those bad habits it will bite his ass down the road with weight regain.
  21. The capacity of the stomach will increase a little after the first year, but not by much unless you are constantly intentionally overstuffing it. Someone above said they increased to about 1.5 cups. Many people who regained were convinced their stomach had stretched out, but those who had it checked were still as restricted as expected. Most people who I've seen report that they regained and are seeking support to get back on track say that over time they fell into bad habits and started grazing/emotional eating/eating poor/junk/slider foods. At 6 weeks post op I reckon I could easily consume 3000 calories or more a day if I was eating poor quality/slider foods frequently and drinking alcohol and other liquid calories. People who start drinking with their meals will find they can eat a lot more (even though it may cause some indigestion or toileting issues). Get advice and support from a nutritionist. Develop good eating habits in your post sleeve honeymoon period and work to build a strong metabolism with a workable long term diet that will remain suitable and sustainable and keep you maintaining your weight loss beyond 2 years post sleeve. Creekimp63 has posted in a couple of recent replies that her support team recommend increasing to a maintainable 1200 calories (incorporating healthy carbohydrates while still meeting protein targets) as soon as possible post sleeve, to avoid damaging your metabolism (when it wakes up post honeymoon period) with very low calorie diet and triggering diet fatigue and the metabolic/hormonal push to regain weight that so many of us already suffered after years of failed dieting and regain. And get help now for any psychological issues that were contributing to your previous weight gain and any bad eating habits, as you need to deal with stress and mental issues without resorting to food, or progressing to other damaging behaviors like alcohol and drug abuse (some people with unresolved issues move on to other dangerous addictions once surgery prevents using food to manage/avoid stressors) We are all here to support each other, and we all want everyone to succeed! Too many of us have suffered too many years from obesity.
  22. I had the sleeve done in June 5th. I am having major backpain specifically in my right lower side. Also my stomach feels so much more bloated now then even before and I know it can’t be weight gain since I haven’t eaten anything! Anyone else experience this?
  23. Update: Third trimester!!! So far so good!!! Baby is healthy! Mom is healthy!!! Due to my being a Bariatric patient the glucose testing has been altered. Testing glucose levels 4 times a day, first fasting and 2 hours after every meal for 7 Days. So far so good. Ready to ride this last stretch out with minimal weight gain and a happy and healthy mom and new baby girl💜💕💞🙏🏽 Total wt gain thus far=10-14lbs. 😔
  24. I have bipolar and I’m on trazadone, lunesta, trileptal, klonopin and seroquel. Seroquel is known to increase appetite and cause weight gain. No problems here! VSG on 5/10, don 25 lbs
