Dealing with Work and Time Off

I work for a college, and they have guidelines for medical leave, which I'm familiar with because I had back surgery a year or so ago (I was in a different office and position at the time, but same university). I can go directly through HR for all paperwork, so only HR would know the reason behind my leave. I would probably just tell my direct supervisor that I am having surgery and will go through HR with the paperwork for medical leave. I'm hoping to only be out for a week, and depending on what days my surgeon operates on I would like the time off to span a weekend so I miss fewer working days. I'll be seeing my surgeon tomorrow for an EGD, so if there is time maybe I'll pick his brain about when his patients are typically able to go back to work. I'm probably stressing about this for no reason, and my employer would probably be more than OK with me missing work for surgery, it's just my first time in a year-to-year contract job, so that in itself is stressful because they can choose to not renew you without a reason.
  3. I don't know about Dr. Ganta, my surgeon was Dr. Bridget Brady with Southwest Bariatric, I was banded on October 27th, 2008 and the results I've had have been incredible in the 7 months since my first appointment before surgery I have lost 102 pounds and have continued to lose weight. I started at 386 pounds on August 21st, 2008 at my first appointment and was down to 284 as of my last follow up on March 19th, 2009 I can honestly recommend Southwest Bariatric.

    Introduction...

Hey. My story is a little different but more personal but I don't mind sharing it. I grew up in a very abusive household. My dad was obsessive about fat. He made me start dieting at the age of four. I was drinking slim fast around the age of four or five and he would make me get up at five a.m. to exercise everyday. I was on dexatrim at seven. He was always merciless and it got worse as I got older. Looking back at older pictures of myself I realized I wasn't even big. I had gotten body dismorphia. I believe I was so stressed about being thin that I actually begin to binge and diet on a regular. By the time I was 14 I had gotten up to 245 pounds and was wearing 20 and 22 sizes. I got on ww and lost 100 pounds in high school but the cycle continued through my adult life after I had kids especially. Well my father and I got our relationship together and I forgave him and shortly after we mended our relationship, he was murdered. This was four years ago. I went through a majorly low depression, got involved with an abusive man, and my weight shot up in 2014 to 345 pounds. It was the biggest I had ever been in my life. And I decided to take my life back. I got on ww again and lost 30 pounds but couldn't lose anymore. And I remember crying out of frustration and praying about it and I said I'm going to do the sleeve surgery. (I had already researched it years before but didn't go through with the requirements) . So had to do a six month supervised diet and ended up losing almost 60 more pounds. So I've lost almost 100 before surgery. I just knew I had to do it for myself. I stopped smoking, dropped that loser I was with, and renewed my relationship with Jesus Christ. As far as my family I only told two people in my immediate family. I'm not telling anyone else.

    Foods

Soft foods include yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna with light mayo, creamed soups, mashable vegetables, canned chicken, canned salmon, etc. Basically, soft foods are soft going down. Did your surgeon's office or dietitian or nutritionist give you a pamphlet or handout that listed the allowable soft foods for their bariatric program?

I have vitamins chewable from bariatric advantage my surgeon gave them to me they are watermelon cant say they taste good though
  7. Thank you for your supportive responses. Have you found any insight into my question regarding general "aging with the sleeve" or chronic malnutrition inquiries? The latter of which was brought to my attention by a therapist I saw recently to help out with this choice. However, although she practices counseling bariatric surgery clients her thoughts are totally rooted against WLS and she holds many erroneous beliefs; E.G. "One month after WLS the majority of patients will need to return to the OR to have their galbladders removed as surgery will place one at risk for stones." However, being obese and middle aged, I am presently at risk for gallstones. I assume this risk will actually decrease if I lose the weight. She also stated that due to chronic malnutrition my cognitive acuity would decrease (as in I will "get stupid"?). Needless to say I am shopping for a new therapist.

    My dr better say yes

Congratulations... asking my PCP was the hardest part for me in making the decision as well. In fact she didn't take me serious until I called a month later to find out why the referral had not been sent the bariatric center. It was a long year since I had to battle the insurance company right through until the last appeal. I had my surgery 12/28/11 and it's been the best decision of my life. I wish you the very best. I don't think you'll back out once you get fully inspired and are doing this for all the right reasons.

19 days later after surgery and this liquid diet sucks

Each surgeon/bariatric group has different guidelines really. Most have you move on to mushies after 3 weeks. Then solids after 5-6 weeks post op. They didn't limit me on my protein brands as far as protein shakes other than to watch the sugar content. Is that the food list they gave you?
  12. Good for you who in Mexico?. I'm researching Tijuana Bariatric Center with Dr Garcia. I was scheduled for this week. Then decided to wait and see if I can LOSE the 35# with weight watchers . At the end of April if I haven't lost 10 lb I'm seriously looking into the sleeve again sick of being fat. Good luck Sent from my SM-J727V using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. **sorry this one's a long one!!!!** Hello everybody, I had an appt with my doctor a few days ago for follow up on my bloodwork and ultrasound on my gallbladder because she thought I might have needed to get my gallbladder removed. Turns out all my labs were perfect, no gallbladder problems but I did have a little bit of a higher cholestoral and I found out that I also have Fatty Liver [emoji45][emoji45] we discussed how it happens and how you treat it and basically... She said I have to lose weight. I finally brought up weight loss surgery to her. She wrote down everything she could to try to get me to get approved. She wrote down how long I've tried diets, what diets I've tried, morbid obesity (she said if she just out obesity it wouldn't get approved), body pains, asthma, etc and she put in a referral for surgery. Since I have medi-cal I guess the referral goes to a referall center then it goes to the bariatric surgeon or bariatric program or something like that and I'm supposed to hear a call back within two weeks. My doctor said the program is going to take 3-4 months and that I can't do it through her, I have to do it through the bariatric office I guess. Like my nutrition appointments and things like that can't be through my personal doctors office. Anyways, I am super excited and hoping I get good news soon! On a side note the bariatric office/surgeon that the people in my county get reffered to (I'm in the central Valley of CA btw) has horrible reviews and someone who went to him is dealing with horrible complications. I do not want that to be me... Is there anyway that I can go to a different county to get surgery but still have it covered by medi-cal? If that place is my only option then I will hold off on surgery until I move or until I can pay out of pocket I guess [emoji45]🤦🏻‍♀️ If anyone has any info that would be great, thanks so much.
  14. My tummy has also been sensitive on solids. I am 5 wks tomorrow. I wake up feeling good as the day goes on I'm wore plum out. No stamina, energy just blah. Been crabby lately I'm frustrated I can't do all the things I need an want to do. I'm using myfitnesspal recording everything I'm staying between 40 to 70 protein drinking water. ..some juice half an half, I am having an issue with ALERT : TMI: constipation. I have a script it normally works me regular but I've seen a change since surgery on how it even affects me. I still can only get about 2 or 3 oz of bites in. Trying still to establish all meds. .I have been nauseous the past few wks..I actually fought throwing up this morning but I threw up anyway there wasn't nothing but foam..water a tad bit. I have a script for nauseous so I took one calmed it down. My bariatric nurse called today first time since surgery 5 wks out, asked me how I was doing. She said the nauseous will stop it just takes time. Havnt had much an appetite the past few days. I'm over 40 pds down. Overall I'm happy just been irritable I can't do much without dragging but right now. Next Mon me n gfs fly to MB for 5 days I hope I get some stamina back...hang in there everyone! Were on the mend...

    Bandsters in Dallas?

Hi Vanessa and welcome to the start of your new life!! I don't know about Dallas bandsters on this site, I pretty much stay on the post-op section, but there's a yahoo group called DFWBandsters at: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/DFWBandsters I'm a member there even though I'm not technically IN Dallas.. I'm 2 hours (or more, depending on traffic..hehe) east. There's also a Texas Association for Bariatric Surgery conference coming up soon in Dallas..my doc and a lot of his staff are going and are encouraging patients to attend. I've registered, but still haven't 100% decided to go. http://www.txtabs.org/index.html (scroll down for the links about the conference). Again, welcome to bandlandia.
  16. I had my surgery done in a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. There are many scattered throughout the country. The advantage was that they specialized in this type of surgery and had a complete complement of staff to support the surgery. My surgeon only performed this type of surgery. The nutricianist were specialized for weight loss surgery. The entire range of pre-op testing was done in that hospital. They provided courses. They had staff to work the insurance problems. They chartered and managed the various Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting scattered throughout the state. It was like a full meal deal (pardon the pun).

    Throwing up all the time

I'd go to the ER. They could at least do a scan to determine if you have a blockage of some sort. I'd also call around to other bariatric clinics/surgeons to see if they accept your insurance since ultimately, if this is a band problem, only they'll know how to deal with it. A general surgeon is likely just going to suggest removing the band completely and that may not be necessary. Problems for 6 months and now this? What is in your current doctor's head that he hasn't addressed this issue!?

    Throwing up all the time

If you can't keep anything down then you need to go to the ER. You can become dehydrated quickly. Once there, they can at least hook you up to an IV and do an upper GI to see what is going on. You need to identify the problem. Your surgeon should be concerned with your symptoms. I am assuming you were unfilled due to these problems. Something is obviously blocking you. General surgeons do not do bariatric surgery unless they have been trained and do it in addition to general surgery. But to just find a general surgeon who does is not likely. Plus you wouldn't want an inexperienced surgeon to be addressing your problem. You need to work with your new insurance and fight them to get this covered. This is not just a band problem, it could be an emergency situation that needs to be addressed. Good luck. P.S. Make sure you get the results of any tests they do in the ER if you go. Plus get all of your tests results from before, during and after your surgery. Call your doctor's office and ask for them. It is your right.
  19. but able to get in 64oz most days. I focus on getting the fluids in, if I get in one or two Protein drinks (30g protein each) then great, but I always manage at least one a day. I can not get Vitamins and Calcium in. I am averaging only one each every day. They taste sooooo awful that I gag and feel like vomitting after I take them. I am currently using the Celebrate orange calcium and strawberry/pineapple or orange vitamins. There must be something else that is not as gagworthy? Please, a chewable bariatric Vitamin? Any one know. Also, could the tired be from not getting enough protein and vitamins? I'm assuming it is. Is nausea still common at this stage? Also, getting pulling and stretching pain (more discomfort than pain) around the incision where my port used to be and another spot about 3 inches to the left of that, but there is no incision in that spot. Also, the area where my port used to be sometimes gets hard and bloated after drinking? It doesn't hurt or anything, but I have no idea if this is normal. Other than the above, I feel good. I am seeing my dr on Wednesday and will ask him all of the same questions, but wondering if anyone had any insight in the meantime. Thanks

    Will I regain the weigth?

@@Canadian lady, You are having surgery in a few weeks? Has your surgeons office given you information about both surgeries and the expectations for post op care? If not I would suggest you ask for this information so you have everything you need to do to prepare yourself for success. Having WLS requires a great amount of work on your part to be successful. The answer to your question about regain is yes, absolutely you can gain all of your weight back down the road if you do not follow the plan. It is important that you are given a plan and speak with a therapist to ensure there is a plan to deal with any current eating habits that got you here. Otherwise it is very possible to eat around your surgery. I would definately reach out to your surgeon asap and ask for their expectations post surgery. I went to a bariatric center of excellence and was given a giant binder that informed me of all the surgery options, their risks, what I could expect afterwards and a food and exercise plan. I believe most surgeons have something similiar. Best of luck on your upcoming surgery!

    Gastric Sleeve and Depression

Yes, depression is not uncommon post bariatric surgery. Medication may be the way to go, at least temporarily. I have had clinical depression for at least four decades and have been taking bupropion (Wellbutrin), an NDRI, for 20 years. I have no side effects. SSRIs an SNRIs did not work for me or only worked briefly. It's important for you to work with a psychiatrist for medication. They know far more about psychotropic meds than primary care physicians. Please bear in mind that there is no one-size-fits-all psychotropic medication. To find the antidepressant that works for you is a trial and error process. It may take numerous trials. Hang in there, it does get better.
  22. I have respect for all of you that have had to jump through insurance hoops. I have crappy bariatric benefits so much so that it was cheaper to go cash pay, believe it or not. Yes, I had to pay more than what people using insurance do. However, the huge benefit was how quickly the process went. I made the decision to have the surgery the very end of March. I had sinus surgery April 10th, went to a seminar and met with the surgeon within a couple of weeks after that and they were ready to give me a surgery date of May 15th. I ended up scheduling for May 22nd. Due to a couple of issues, I ultimately ended up having surgery on June 5th.

    Bari buddy pillow

I looked at getting the bariatric bear, but ended up using a stuffed bunny that I already had. Definitely helpful to have a pillow/stuffed animal to help you through the early phase when standing up hurts like mad, and to create barrier between the sore tummy and the seatbelt on the way home.
  24. I'm in the very beginning stages. I was referred by my primary physician to the bariatric center for WLS. I'm in Orange County, Calif (Irvine area). I received a call a week ago from the bariatric department stating they approved me and will be mailing me a packet in snail mail. I haven't received anything yet - it's been over 7 days. Is there anyone out there from Orange County Calif that has used Kaiser? I'm curious about their process. I see a lot on here from Kaiser N. Calif and outlying areas but can't find anyone from Orange County. I'd like to hear from other Orange County, Kaiser, Sleevers. .
