    Chewables make me so nauseous!

I'm 6 weeks post op and have tried so many different vitamins. The chewable a from celebrate and bariatric advantage make me vomit. I've tried orange, berry something and vanilla. My doctor moved me to capsules at 2 weeks because of the vomiting and still the same thing! I'm taking celebrate Multi capsules and each time I swallow one I know to grAb my pink puke tray. It's to the point where I skip them most times because I don't want to throw up. My NUT suggested I open and mix them with food, but any way I put them into my body, they come back up. It's so frustrating!!!
  2. So great i can share my ideas and concerns with people going through the same process. Im 5 foot 9 320 pounds im getting the sleeve my surgery date is December 29. Hope to have a successful surgery and healthy lifestyle:)
  3. This doc gives a pretty good progression of how your meal volume, on average, will tend to increase over time, and it is pretty consistent with my experience. What I like about this guy is that he is one of the few bariatric surgeons that I have seen that addresses this issue and offers a prescription to mitigate its effects. You may or may not get along with his recommendation (I don't agree with everything he, or anyone else for that matter, says) but it is something to think about in planning your next few years. I have evolved into something akin to his program, as in being fairly veg heavy, but I'm not as grain averse as he is and I do think that his protein recommendations are a bit on the scant side for most.
  4. Hi I am using a local bariatric nutritionist (got sleeved in Mexico) and am going to have the blood tests she recommended before I go see her. I was curious if the doctors order the same things tested. Here are the tests she recommended: 1. CMP 2. CBC 3. Serum Ferritin 4. B12/Folic Acid - Specimen must be protected from light 5. Magnesium (RBC) 6. B1 Plasma - Freeze specimen 7. 25 Hydroxy/Vitamin D 8. B6 9. Serum Retinol (vitamin A) - Protect specimen from light 10. Serum Copper (not a standard lab, but I would check) 11. Pre-albumin
  5. Is my Nutritionist keeping me fat - Part 2 permalink Hi, I posted on this before and guess I am looking for some encouragement. For those of you who did not see my original post. I was banded on May 1, 2009 at 300/lbs. Join a jym with a trainer and nutritionist in July of that year and have been working out ever since. I dropped 30/lbs quickly and the last 20 have been a struggle. I have been hovering around the 250 - 258 mark for almost a year. The Nutritionist at the gym had me eating around 1700 - 1800 calories. With this weight was fairly stable around the 258 mark. Went to the Bariatric Nutritionist who says I was eating far too much. And after I loose the weight I can work on increasing calories, she cut me back to around 1300, and under 100 carbs a day. The GYM Nutritionist says 1500 is ok and maybe a few more carbs. So Here I am. So I have been sticking to around 1300 calories, not much fun. And wondering if the rest of this weight will ever come off. Still working out 3 to 5 times a week. Need to go at least 5 times but all this working out has hurt my knees so I have been going to PT twice a week. I have been keeping carbs around 100 a day. Went a bit crazy on a month long vacation and when I returned in early Aug was up to 258 again. Today down to 247 in like 8 weeks. but it is slow. I do not need a fill as I cannot eat in the Morning and having some PB Issues 3 or 4 times a week. The Bariatric Nutritionist said not to worry yet about this and to get this final 22/lbs off. Any suggestions. I was thinking to move up to around 1500 calories and increase my work outs a bit. Also a friend is going to Metabolic Research center. which is also low carb and supplements for Metabolism and doing quite well. Just want to get this last 20 lbs off!!

    Vitamins

Yes, check with your surgeon. Liquid or Chewables only. After trying Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate Chewables, I settled on NutraMetrix isotonic vitamins. It's a powder that you mix with 2 oz. of water. They also have a calcium supplement. They taste like an orange drink. Again, check with your surgeon.

    I need some Advice!

@ To surfer girls point, if you choose a Bariatric center of excellence, your chances are better than your new insurance will cover you down the road. But I would definately get started because there is likely going to be a supervised diet of some sort that insurance or the center itself requires. Good luck to you!

    Considering Surgery

I'm about 25 lbs. from my surgeon's goal weight for me, and the above posts are completely correct- it is a total mindset shift about food & our relationship with it. I still love going to restaurants, but most of the time, it's a "fail" because a lot of what's on the menu isn't bariatric friendly. Usually, I'll just order an appetizer or even something off the kid's menu...eat what I can, then don't feel bad when there's leftover food on the plate. Feeling "full" is completely different now too, and not at all pleasant. Before surgery, stuffing myself made me happy, sleepy, and very content. Now, it's extremely uncomfortable- something like pressing your fist into the end of your breastbone, right where your ribs split apart. Sometimes I actually miss that happy, sluggish feeing, I'll admit it- but I don't regret my surgery for one second.

    Outsiders Perspective: The Bbq Dilemma

Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee has a new senoir leadership member. We had a welcoming celebration for him today in the cafeteria. A favorite local BBQ joint catered the event, and since I am on the activities committee, I helped dish the food out to everyone for an hour or so. I had fun doing it, and it was a great event overall. I am excited for our facility! The future looks bright for CRMC and the Bariatric Center. That being said (and working in Bariatrics) I couldn't help but think (from an outsiders point of view) how hard event's like these could potentially be on a Lap-Band patient, especially a new Lap-Band patient. We have 2 lines of BBQ being served out as a form of celebration. What if you can't have BBQ? Or, even worse, what if you REALLY like BBQ, BUT you shouldn't have it, but want to be involved in the event? I mean, I try to eat healthy, but I fell weak to the temptation and grabbed a plate. Would it be cheating to a Lap-Band patient, even though the environmental pressures are so elevated it's almost considered "anti-social" not to participate? Society doesn't make it easy to come to terms with obesity, and it makes it even harder to fight. It helps me remember how much hard work, dedication, and attention goes into pre/post opp lifetstyles of a Lap-Band patient. I don't claim to fully understand because I do not have a band inside of me. But I've struggled with weight loss and know it's trials. I am amazed at the strength and tenacity of those individuals fighting to improve in any way, and I tip my hat to you all. In my eyes, you are all warriors, surrounded on all sides, fighting back the masses, and winning!!! As my Grandpa used to tell me, "Go get 'em tiger!" Grrr...

    Pre-op liquid diet

I lost 21 lbs on my 2 week preop liquid diet. I was on bariatric advantage shakes for 2 weeks preop.
  11. Hi everyone, ok I've been wanting to write on here for awhile so here goes, I'm from Ontario Canada, I have finishes with all my visits with the bariatric team and my surgery is set for May 28th! My surgeon mentioned that I'm more of a candidate for the sleeve apposed to the gastric bypass, can anyone tell me if there is any difference between either surgery afterwards like the eating, recovery, weight loss...etc etc. I have been reading and preparing for the gastric bypass and not familiar with the sleeve. Also if anyone is interested my email is mariamassa@hotmail.ca for support. All the best to all!

  13. I came from Ohio to here but I know my excellent surgeon knows folks down here, he trained in Florida. I will send them an email. In the mean time: The Cleveland Clinic in Florida is about the best place in the country, my surgeon trained here, they may be able to steer you: http://my.clevelandclinic.org/florida/departments/general_surgery/bariatric/default.aspx I like Tampa General. Here is a link to their Bariatric Unit which is a Center of Excellence: http://www.tgh.org/weight.htm
  14. Do you use? I am anemic so I take 120mg daily. I am using Bariatric Advantage right now but its so expensive. Looking for an alternative that will work. Thanks!
  15. Hello everyone: I am Jeff....38/Male from Pennsylvania. About 29 months ago I was injured at work...as a PreHospital Nurse. The injury was to my talks, a fracture and also a grade 2 case of Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction. Workers Comp had me to 3 Drs before we found out what was wrong. In August of 2010 I had a 3 joint fusion in my foot. A repeat procedure in August of 2011 for non union. Since my injury and being confined to crutches I've packed on an additional 90 pounds. Currently I am 5'8" and weight 430#. The surgeon demanded I have bariatric surgery before he fixes my foot. The inability to move...let alone exercise is more frustrating than I'd have ever imagined. I guess I just want to know that I'm not alone and most importantly that I will be on the road to recovery and can finally be able to walk again without crutches. Jeff Hpbuddha@ptd.net

Lose Weight And Keep It Off

Though regain and difficulty with maintenance is very common....Few people who are struggling with regain stick around and post on this board. Most folks here are new to surgery and excited about possibilities, going through the process...high energy. You will see a few people talking about regain on the veteran's forum and revision boards. If you want statistical information about percentages of people who reach goal, regain, what is considered "a success" in the industry...talk to your bariatric surgeon. They are excellent, tough questions that you really should ask.
  17. My bypass surgery is May 12. I will be using celebrate vitamins & bariatric advantage. Also, celebrate essential 3 in 1 drink mix. Great taste. CW: 319 SD:May 2017 GW: 128
  18. I take two chewable Flintstones, sublingual vitamin B and biotin every morning and three Bariatric Advantage Caramel Calcium Citrates every afternoon (spread over 3-6 hours). Postop I became very sensitive to flavors and the Flintstones chewables have been the only multivitamins I can tolerate. The vitamin b and biotin taste great and I look forward to my calcium citrate chews every afternoon. You should not take any gummy vitamins but the chews are OK. Also you need to take calcium citrate not just regular calcium. You may also need other supplements depending on your blood work.
  19. I am an old Long Island Girl living in FL now. Sleeved in FL on Sept. 10th. Good to see you are going for bariatric surgery. I have cousins on L.I. who are interested in my operation. I will tell them about Brookhaven. I don't know if they will ever do it. It it is not for everyone. Wishing you good health and great happiness.

    Aetna help

Hi there. I have Aetna and am 6 days post op. Sounds like you may need to start from the beginning unless you have seen your physician on a monthly basis with weight documented, as well as a dietician and therapist. I used TMH Bariatric Center- wonderful group. I have a bariatric MD, dietician and therapist all in the same building. Once you complete the three month plan, and are not gaining any weight, the MD submits a letter of medical necessity and refers you to your surgeon. Once your surgeon gets the referral, they submit your paperwork to Aetna and from there is a waiting game. It was less than a week before I received my surgery date. You can call member services and they may be able to help you see where you stand. From start to finish, it took 5 1/2 months for the entire process. Good luck!

What to take and day of?

dont expect to be working or using laptop. you probably wont even read a book. between sleepies from pain meds and post anesthesia, not much will be happening in brain land. I was really glad I had loose pants with drawstring, warm crocheted vest, sleep mask, ear plugs, warm slipper socks. everything else was not really needed. oh, and some nice smelling lip balm, think it was coconut almond or something. I had a little fleece blanket that was bright colored that was homey to come back to after my walks, and helped me know I was going in to the right room. just think bedtime and hall walks. I had a roomie so it was nice to be able to tune out that side of the room. of and comfy old bra and tshirt with loose sleeves. you will have an iv so dont have anything with long tight sleeves. I had a little firm pillow that helped me move around, better than the bariatric teddy bear with advertising they gave me. oh, and I loved having my airline pillow since I have neck problems. love sara
  22. Hi. ChattyPatty from Wisc. Im a newbie here. Pre op weight 226 post op so far 221. If my stomach hurts after full liquids meal (4-6oz)- does that mean too much? If my stomach hurts after not putting anything down (busy shopping, etc) dies that mean Im hungry. I want to make sure Im doing the right thing. After my surgery, I went to ICU for one night then to heart floor for one night. I did not have the advantage of being on a bariatric floor or with staff. That is at a sister hospital. I do use chewable Prevacid. I am still in post op pain outside (sutures) and inside - tummy. Im so afraid of stretching my pouch. Thank you for your help.
  23. I haven't had my surgery yet (hopefully by end of month), but I met with my nutritionist for the final visit yesterday. She went over everything I would need to know for after surgery. She said I would need to take 2 Flintstone Complete Vitamins, Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D 3-4 times a day, Vitamin B-12 and Biotin daily. My sister had gastric bypass surgery last year and her doctor only has her taking fusion chewables 4 times a day. I looked at the bottle on line (www.bariatricchoice.com) and it seems to have everything that I was told to take. Does anyone else take Fusion? I would rather take just one thing than all that other stuff.

    Whats the hold up....

My insurance pretty much gave me this surgery for free with no catch (i.e. no minimum weightloss, or comorbidities necessary), and I'm relatively young so I barely needed any tests. BUT it still took me 6 months, probably due to COVID, but also every department related to Bariatrics is honestly so antiquated. I've been through the process in NY and Boston and it's always been 5-6 months.

    Visited PCP for support letter

Well, I think it went very well, however, the DR. Said I may be disqualified because I take cymbalta. We'll see what the surgeon says. My BP was 145/94:faint: The dr. freaked out because it has never been that high before. He asked if I had eaten alot of high sodium foods and I told him that could be the problem. He stated that if I didn't get approved for the band he will have to prescribe RX. Don't want that. I told him I would let him know as soon as I knew something. There happen to have been to residencies in the room with me and the dr. explained to them that studies have become available this year that it is impossible for anyone weighing more than 100lbs over their ideal weight to keep the weight off without some form of bariatric procedure. That's the first I've heard of that. It stated that if it works for me, he may have to get a lap-band himself:phanvan . He didn't appear against it, however, I'm sure he would prefer I continue coming to see him with migraines, high blood pressure, fatigue, and borderline diabetes.
