Unflavored protein powder...? Full Liquid shopping list???....
wiscogal replied to kelliekell's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Genepro is an awesome unflavored protein powder. My RD recommended it. I stir it into yogurts and I’ll blend it into my Premier Protein shakes (brings the total protein up to 45 grams). I will blend it into my soups as well but I make sure the soup isn’t too hot. Genepro is only 1 tablespoon vs. some protein powders require 1/4 cup. It’s pricey but so worth it! -
I take unflavored GenePro. I got it from Amazon and it’s 30 grams for a small scoop. I put it in my mug of chicken broth. You can put this in anything. I hate shakes!

Tiny freak out moment

Exciting news that you are almost there!! As everyone has said, the mind is our worse enemy. Now if that darn WLS could just fix it too. Now I am 3 years out and I feel like I am one of the lucky ones, as I still have no physical hunger at all. But....with that being said MAN O MIGHTY do I deal with a ton of my mind telling me to EAT!!! I can and some days do forget to eat. I am a big coffee drinker so I add Protein to my coffee. WHAM 30 grams of protein. Most of the time I don't realize that I need to eat until I feel BAD and I mean BAD TO THE BONE!!! This is why I have GENEPRO unflavored Protein in my coffee. One of the things that help with my mi9nd hunger is Facebook Support groups like BARIATRICPAL. I color, crochet, read anything that keeps my hands busy. So happy that you are almost ready to take your WL journey. Good Luck and keep us posted about your progress. -
I'd highly recommend GenePro. It's pretty expensive but, it is worth it 100%. On amazon it is $47 for 47 servings. BUT the key is that the scoop amount is so much smaller, approx. 2 tablespoons for 30grams of protein. I found that when I was only a few weeks post op, I couldn't consume that much liquid. So when I went to mix in unflavored protein powder, the amount of powder wouldn't mix in right. It would be chunky or "grainy". With Genepro, I could still get in my protein requirements with less powder and less liquid. Plus it mixes well with hot and cold liquids.

It depends on what stage you are at in your journey. If you are pre-op now, I wouldn't worry about using protein shakes. Trust me, you will get sick of them soon after surgery, so you don't want to exacerbate the problem by drinking protein shakes before you need to. Best protein sources pre surgery and post surgery are fish and lean meats. Greek yogurt and cottage cheese help as well (just keep the carbs below 20g per yogurt). You can get plant based proteins, as well, but I found it is a lot harder until you get further along. In my first few weeks, I mixed the protein powder with broth, diluted 100% juice, FairLife milk, and I actually made these 2 once jello cups and mixed in the Genepro. Each Jello cup gave me 12.5 grams of protein. As I went into pureed foods, I did a lot of soups. Mostly of my own making, because so many of the store bought soups have too much sodium in them. The recipe for the jello cups: 1 box of sugar free Jello with 5 scoops of GenePro protein. Makes 14, 2oz cups. I bought the cups from the dollar tree. They are plastic with lids that restaurants will send home condiments in.

I went with Unjury, which was recommended by some folks here. It doesn't seem to taste at all, which is ideal. You can't order it from Amazon or find it in stores as far as I know. But it's on their site, priced reasonably (for what it is anyway) and they ship fast. Really though, everyone is going to swear the one they use is best. That is standard. The only one I warn against is Genepro, which claims to have 30 grams of protein per tablespoon... and there are 14.3 grams in a tablespoon. Some folks here love that one too and swear it's great, but that one makes me wary.

Protein supplements - What is the highest # of protein with the lowest volume to have to drink?
Sai replied to LittleLizzieLilliput's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't drink any Protein drink, pre-made or otherwise. I'm a big fan of unflavored protein if I find myself running low on protein. Maybe get some unflavored protein and add it to your purees/drinks. I use GENEPRO but others here like Isopure and many others. -
"unflavored" protein to mix with coffee?

Does protein have to come from shakes?
triciakae replied to JohnnysGirl0424's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I havn't been able to stomach Protein shakes since 2 weeks post op. I am now 4 months out. Yes you can get the protein in without shakes. Are you in the pureed stage? If so try getting GENEPRO unflavored protein. You can add it to anything to be able to get your protein in. Also I follow the rule of every snake or meal has to be atleast 10grams of protein. So if you are following the eat 6 times a day that is 60grams of protein. -
Unflavored Protein

https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/results/NCT02919657?sect=X70156#outcome1 These are the blood draws that show you can still meet your protein goals on GENEPRO. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/alexmorrell/2015/03/12/lawsuits-say-protein-powders-lack-protein-ripping-off-athletes/amp/ And this shows just how many protein brands add other ingredients and claim them as protein. I guess nothing can be easy for us WLS patients huh? 🤷♀️ -
And yes there are a lot of sketchy protein powders and we should be quite picky about the ones we use! But not all are sketchy. You need to make educated choices about which you use. And not all doctors recommend leaving them behind. Your generalizations are inaccurate. I never told anyone to not take Genepro. I let grown ups make their own choices. I do suggest they have all the information though and when people ask for ideas and recommendation I like to give information not just suggestions.

A. That study was done by and paid for by the company that manufactures Genepro. We call that if the industry a conflict of interest. B. Serum (blood) levels of protein do not show that dietary protein is adequate. There is no blood test that shows that. Protein in the blood is a measure of liver and kidney function.

My nut and my surgeon both recommended genepro. It’s the only thing I’ve been able to tolerate. I really like it and have had no problems with it.

This escalated quickly... but I have to agree. Opinion doesn't mean anything. Facts are the ONLY thing that matter here. Here are some facts... from the lawsuit against Musclegene (the makers of GenePro) "MuscleGen's claim that its GenePro product has 30 grams of protein in a 1 tablespoon serving size and its use of the term "medical grade" are likely to mislead and cause confusion among consumers in that the stated protein amount is false, and there is no "medical grade" protein standard provided by the protein powder industry or the FDA. Further, SI03 faces irreparable harm, as the continuing false advertising of MuscleGen's products that compete with SI03's products poses a risk to SI03's sales and reputation. Conversely, MuscleGen has no protectable interest in continuing to falsely advertise its GenePro products. Finally, the Court finds that the public interest is served by preventing Defendant MuscleGen from misleading consumers to believe that a one tablespoon serving size of GenePro contains 30 grams of protein when the actual amount of protein is 10 grams or less." https://www.leagle.com/decision/infdco20171213e89 So anyone's "Opinion" that GenePro is a good protein doesn't sway from the fact that people taking it are assuming 30 grams of protein when they are getting less than 10.... that's a dangerous assumption to make or to impose on anyone. In a WLS situation where getting 1/3 less protein then you are counting can cause some very harmful results. Personally I don't give a rats ass what you take for protein... but don't blindly tell people something is good, without also giving them the facts of the matter.... this protein DOES NOT contain as much protein as is advertised. You can't squeeze more grams of a protein into less total grams of product... It's just not possible. IE you can't fit 10 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. So let's take a step back... clearly the difference between telling folks the truth and telling folks an opinion is vastly different and anyone getting upset over the truth... needs to reevaluate things.

Meal Planning - Nutrients, calories what is most important to you?!
Crick replied to dwaite's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So my primary focus is on getting protein first and foremost. Partially because it’s filling and partially because I am working out so much that I need the protein for my muscles. I eat 3 meals a day and usually 1 snack. I definitely try to avoid refined carbs for the most part. Now, I’m not going to lie - I’ve had a cookie 3 or 4 times, or a tiny scoop of gourmet ice cream, but those are occasional one-offs and not something I keep in my house. I’m currently at about 1200 calories a day. My breakfast is pretty boring - I either have chobani less sugar added Greek yogurt with a scoop of genepro protein powder, 15-16 raspberries or 10-12 blackberries, and 1/3 a cup of purely Elizabeth grain free granola, or half an “egg wrap” - which is using a low carb tortilla (I like the ole version), egg, grilled veggies (zucchini, red pepper, yellow pepper, red onion, zucchini and spinach), ground turkey sausage, and shredded mozzarella. Lunch and dinner are just dependent on what I’ve cooked - usually something like spinach stuffed chicken breasts, a fajita bowl (meat, a little cheese, grilled onions, and salsa), ground chicken burger, taco salad, etc. Snacks are usually one of the following - 3 apple slices with 2 TBS natural peanut butter (just peanuts - no sugar or salt), cashews, chicka boom popcorn (the sea salt one and I measure out 2 cups), or if I am short on protein, “protein pudding” - 1 sugar free pudding cup with a scoop of genepro protein powder. I do also throw in sugar free popsicles and sugar free fudgesicles (but those are part of the liquids and I don’t have to wait to drink after those). My goal is minimum 80 grams of protein. I still try to be low carb and low sugar but my net carbs are usually around 50-60. That is now - I was definitely lower early on - but trying not to be carb phobic of the good carbs now. I was extremely carb phobic at first. Have added more veggies and fruits in the last couple of months, but again, my #1 goal is protein. -
Not a fan of the shakes
Ssze1109 replied to Victoria Bontempi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gave up shakes early on. Surgery was November 9th. I now get all my Protein from food. I couldn't tolerate the shakes anymore. I keep trying but instantly they make me nauseous, I get chills like I'm going to throw up and diarrhea. I can tolerate GENEPRO protein if I add it to something but most days I don't need it. This is a write up from the maker of Genepro: What makes GENEPRO so unique is that we are able to reduce the Protein molecule to half the size of normal protein through a process called Electrophoresis. This is a reverse electrical polarity method of extracting pure protein. In essence we take protein molecules that, for reference, are the size of a baseball. We push these baseball sized protein molecules through a Polyacrylamide gel (the gel stays below 87 degrees F) and introduce electricity through the gel. This process removes hydrogen ions, allergens and any fillers or binders so we are able to then bind the protein with a strand of six amino acids called a Hexapeptide which stabilizes the molecular structure. This hexapeptide increases shelf life of the protein as well as balancing the bitter taste that is present with the protein after electrophoresis and actually gives the protein a slightly sweet undertone. The protein is pushed through a filtration system and into a centrifuge which results in a pure protein molecule that is now the size of a golf ball (for reference). You may not be able to fit 30 baseballs into a shoe box but you can fit 30 golf balls. Thus giving us the ability to get 30grams of protein in a 1TBS serving size. This process also changes the caloritic count as well to 3.2 calories per gram of protein. The process as well at the hexapeptide are patent pending and have never been used before in nutrition (it's a genetic process that is used primarily in forensic science). The other interesting fact is that most protein supplements digest in the lower GI and whey is absorbed at only 31% so if you're "taking" 30g of whey, your body is only taking in 9g. Genepro is digested in the upper GI which eliminates gluten, lactose and bowel sensitivity and absorbs at a rate of 94% which makes it 3 times more effective than any other protein on the planet (medical or open market). Flavorless and odorless and can be mixed instantly in any food or beverage (hot or cold) without changing the taste or consistency. Truly the most complex and advanced protein on the planet. Each 1pound container comes with 3 empty, re-useable travel pouches that make it super convenient to use anytime, anywhere and in anything.
