stall correlated to lack of protein
mariamitani replied to angry's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In order to continue to drop weight you need to remain at 600-800 calories a day. I feel like thats the most important thing to keep losing. All those calories should come mostly from protein.Eggs, fish, steak, ground beef, lentil, beans, shrimp, greek yogurt ,cottage cheese and cheese sticks. You need 75 or more grams of protein a day also important. Drink 64 or more ounces of water a day. When I dont drink water my weight stalls, I think because the body cant remove waste without enough.Take your vitamins daily to keep energy levels up. Try to exercise 3-5 days a week. Measure your food and blog it in myfitnesspal.com. It allows you to see daily protein intake ,calories, carbs etc..Measuring cups, spoons and a scale are also very helpful. Good luck on your journey -
I was told not to have rice, but the others were OK for me. Remember Protein is the key. If you stock up on protein you will feel better and not be as hungry. Check with your Dr. They should have a list for you to refer to. I went and got Egg flour Soup, hot and sour soup and put it in the blender- yummy. Cottage cheese, yogurt, soft poached eggs(again...protein) are good things too. Steam carrots put in blender with a little chicken broth, blend any chunky soup... believe me...I am into week 2 and I am getting creative! The blender is my buddy! Good luck! Jill

Hi, rice may get stuck and even though it's soooooo good, it's not really that great for us bandsters. No protein at all. Just starch which turns into sugar. Mashed pot. aren't so great for us either but at least they won't get stuck. I cut chicken chunks up into tiny, tiny pieces during this stage and chewed them thoroughly. I also ate lots and lots of Yoplait yogurt and SF jello. There's many soups out there too that would be seen as mushy stage food. Cream of pot., Dinty Moore Beef Stew is great too. Just mash up the chunks with a fork. My doc. let me have homemade chili with ground beef at 2 weeks. It went down fine. I had no problems until my first fill. At this time, I began having food get stuck and throwing up. I had to learn how and what to eat. It's a learning process. Just try things you think you might can handle...just a little at a time. Good luck.

Smoothie Recipe from my nutritionist: Cup of Greek yogurt (lots of protein) Milk (I use unsweetened almond milk) your choice of fruit (I use blueberries - great nutritional value) A hand full of spinach for added nutritional value. you won't taste it. I throw in a little chopped ginger root. Its good for the tummy and gives your smoothie a kick. I also sprinkle in a little organic cinnamon. gives additional flavor and cinnamon is good for a variety of ailments High blood pressure, inflammation.......etc..... Happy Trails......

OMG Cravings!!! Chocolate!!! Help!!!
JudyDF replied to titiay30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am addicted to chocolate protein shakes and I add chololate yogurt. Delicious plus healthy. -
I asked my doc specifically and from day one he said non-fat milk was fine. I was SO glad because that's the base of my Protein shakes and I was worried I would have to do without those. They are my main salvation!!! I'm doing better as well. The Fourth was indeed hard with all the lovely smells coming from the neighbors yards. I went to a baseball game and EVERYTHING smelled good but when I actually looked at the food, it was like "bleah...no way". So that's good. My friend INSISTED we needed to get ice cream after the game and I didn't want to. I ended up buying a non-fat yogurt and not even eating it. It's still in my freezer. THAT IS A HUGE CHANGE FOR ME!!! I'm usually a little b*tch for ice cream!! Also doing better. Back at work after a week and two days off. It feels SO weird to be back at work! Oh well, gotta do it if I'm going to pay off this surgery. Don't want them to come reposses my band!! The bloat is gone, I lost 13 lbs REALLY fast and then my body seems to have put on the brakes, which is okay. Thirteen pounds in one week is pretty hard on a body. Still have a bad burning next to my port and it hurts if I sit for too long (was in a bit of agony at the baseball game.....also when something good would happen and I'd yell real loud...OUCH). Overall doing good. Having ZERO trouble getting liquids down, even thick liquids. I can see how I'm going to need a fill sooner rather than later!!

5 Pounds to Go...How to Approach Maintenance
mrsto replied to PrettyThick1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes - way to go! Congrats on your great success :-) I'm 12 pounds from goal, and my maintenance plan is to slowly start adding an extra snack; a Protein bar, greek yogurt, etc. Since we can't.....and don't want to eat past band signals, that's really the only way to add back some calories. That, and maybe not focusing so closely on omitting things like healthy fats from your daily menu. I read of many who try and cut fats out, but it's not really necessary.....or healthy. When I go into maintenance mode, I won't worry so much about having 1T of olive oil on my salad. Maybe I'll have 2. Small healthy additions add up, and ultimately, the weight loss will taper off. Just go slow, so you don't get bummed out if the scale shows an extra pound coming back. You've done so well, I'm sure you will transition smoothly into this final phase. Great job!! -
I did great on my pre-band diet and good since the surgery. My last visit I was upgraded to mushies and find I am now constantly hungry. It starts about 2 hours after my morning shake. My stomach is growling and I start thinking about and looking for something to eat. Even high Protein Snacks (cottage cheese, yogurt) aren't holding me very long. One afternoon I had no snack with me and succumed to trying a bite of a donut that was in the office. I discovered that I can not only tolerate eating (yes, I have to chew well) but the QUANTITY doesn't seem to be an issue. I've gained back about 4 lbs according to my home scale. It's that same little-bit-of-crazy hunger that used to herald the coming of my periods. Experienced bandster, HELP! What's going on? Is this normal? I don't seem to have any restriction and think I've reached the end of my own discipline and willpower. Is this just a bump in the road? I'm not due for my first fill until this coming Monday.

Hi everyone. Newbie to this site. This Tuesday will mark the two week mark from the date of my gastric sleeve operation. Last night I ate Soup and a yogurt drink (I was on Clear liquids for 48 hours and then on full liquids until week 4). I think I "drank" my dinner too fast and maybe "ate" too much because I was in so much pain afterwards! Today I have been slowing everything down, evaluating with each sip if I am full or not. Like most people, I am not used to taking my time while eating. This is a whole new world. I had tomato soup and then a cup of Morrocan mint tea for lunch and had no problems at all. Has anyone else made any "newbie" mistakes- eating too fast, trying a food you couldn't handle too soon even if your doctor okayed it? Last night was rough. Mostly I am annoyed because it was Saturday night and I like to watch movies with my husband and son during this time, but instead I was in the bedroom and in and out of the bathroom, having....issues. Ugh.

I WISH I would feel less restriction and I'm 9+ months out!!! I don't get what my problem is- Last night I ate small slices of steak, and after about 3 maybe 4 ounces I thought I was going to possibly rupture my esophagus-the pain was horrible and my mouth filled up with saliva like right before one is about to vomit. I was really shaken by the experience which lasted about 15 minutes then, thank God, subsided. Today, I could hardly eat even soft warm cereal (had to throw out half of it) Later I had a teaspoon of tuna, followed by 2 tortilla chips, chewed well and then a Greek blueberry yogurt. Three quarters of the way through the yogurt I felt like my esophagus would explode and I stood up in pain. How much longer can I take this? I'm 10 lbs away from goal (135)-at this rate I'll keep losing weight!!! I'm so freaked out about this already. By now I would figure I'd be able to at LEAST feel comfortable eating small portions but instead even the small stuff is giving me pain. WHEN DOES It get BETTER? My bougie is a 40 for goodness sake!

I don't like dairy/eggs/fish! What will I eat?
OutsideMatchInside replied to TiredOfMyself's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I really hate eggs after surgery, it is a real roll of the dice if they are okay or if they will make me sick. I don't eat them often. I don't like yogurt, people seem crazy for it and it is all people seem to talk about on weight loss forums and it is just nasty to me and the nutritional value seems worthless, but it easy to eat and has Protein so I see why people like it. When I get tired of fish, I eat deli ham. I like fish because I can eat more of it and easily meet protein goals. Now that I am past 6 months, chicken and beef are much easier to eat than they were at 2-3 months. Now that I am further out I am eating a lot of filet mignon and lamb. Going to add bison in soon. A lot meats that were previously expensive become suddenly affordable when you never eat more than 3-4 oz at a time. -

I am a retired RN, but I know what your talking about....even being retired, I take a thermal tote with ice packs in the car with me because im only 6 wks out and eat small frequent meals...pack some yogurt, boiled eggs, string cheese..protein bars..jerky, pepperoni, etc....depending on your stage...I drink alot of arizona iced tea so i take the gallon in the car with me and carry a reusable double walled cup...hope this helped, good luck and congratulation on your surgery and your clinicals... -

I work in a bank and sometimes we are so busy I either can't drink or forget to drink. Then at lunch time I can't drink w/food. I try to make up for it by drinking in the morning before work. I drink a bottle when I get up, then my Protein shake, then I drink on the ride to work. Then I challenge myself to drink a whole bottle of Water on my ride home (20 minutes). In the evening I drink more and sometimes I add another Protein Shake if I need more protein. If you find a ready made protein shake that you like you can use them at work - it's a great way to get protein and liquid at the same time. Chobani little champions Greek yogurt is good for work too. They're a smaller size so you can eat one fairly quickly. The same with Think Thin Bites (small Protein Bars - about half-size). I carry the bars in my purse. When your able to, try Ostrim beef and Ostrich meat sticks. They're tasty, portable, and have 14gr of protein - another purse staple. I like Cracker Barrel individually wrapped cheese Snacks too. I also carry an insulated lunch bag with a cold pack everywhere I go. I have a good routine down for my Vitamins but I find taking my Calcium more of a problem because I can't take it near my multi or my thyroid med. I keep some in my lunch bag and some in my purse so I can take it whenever I think of it. With time you'll figure out a routine that works for you and a back-up plan for your busier days. Good luck to you! -
Seems like every other time i have a "meal" my stomach hurts when i take a small bite or a few seconds after the bite. Tomorrow i will be two weeks out and can start pureed foods. So I'm on yogurt blended cottage cheese, Soup, Water.. you get it. Did it take anyone else a while before they stopped hurting during meals. I'm starting to think I'm never going to be able to eat without being in discomfort.

I eat a lot of greek yogurt so I never bothered with probiotics. Then again I guess the amount of yogurt I eat is why I am never constipated.

Describe your meals and exercise please
highfunctioningfatman replied to MommyB's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Breakfast was 2 eggs with peppercrack cheese and green enchilada sauce. Lunch was 4 oz of shrimp with lemon juice and old bay seasoning and a slice of havarti cheese. Essentially a shrimp melt without the bread. I had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and 1 tbsp so sugar free strawberry jam around 4. Dinner was an odd mix of pulled pork with homemade refried beans that had Greek yogurt as sour cream. I also had 90 oz of Powerade Zero mixed 50/50 with water and 24 oz of propel water. -
I ate some rice at 5 weeks, but what helped me was to blenderize it with some sauce (chicken curry, in my case). Eating at work is really hard for me. I bring yogurt or string cheese. It takes me to long to eat, and I don't really want my co-workers asking questions. I also bring a Protein drink--Rockin' Refuel. Hope everything works out when you return to work! Shari

Hello , Sorry again I have more questions.I am 5 days post operative. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting fluids and pureed food go down fine. Today for breakfast I had about 3 ounces of oatmeal. Lunch I had about 3 ounces of egg drop soup. For dinner I had 3 ounces of low fat yogurt and later 3 ounces of low fat cottage cheese. This seems like a lot of food. Is this normal for most or to much?

You will find out when you start eating more and feel the restriction. Since you just had surgery not to long ago, you really won't be eating any large amounts of anything for a while, no matter how hungry you feel. I think it took me at least 6 to 8 months beforeI felt like I could eat a decent amount. Now I do well to eat a full chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-a. Usually there is always some left. When my co-workers are with me, they don't order much food because they know I'm not going to finish everything and they have become accustomed to eating the rest lol. Yogurt is one of my favorite foods. I have honestly never tried cottage cheese. When I get a hunger craving now, I eat either yogurt or drink a boldthouse shake which has 32 grams of Protein in it. The shakes/smoothies have a lot of calories but its better than alternatives.
