  1. Meeting your protein goals is really a "For the rest of your life" thing, just like with vitamins. Which we would have to do even without having the surgery, it's just that now with the surgery, it will be so much harder to fit in all those great nutrients, which is why we need to have more nutrient dense foods to fuel our bodies. The amount you need to eat per day depends on what your Height and Weight is. The good news is that this doesn't have to be in Protein shake form. You can do it just with diet. If you have a dietician, it's worth chatting to them about other ways to get your daily protein in. Some people just find the shakes easier. Others are happy eating it in their daily food. Below are a bunch of foods high in protein, you can make amazing meals with these and get all your daily protein without using shakes 1) Beef Skirt Steak: 26.7 g Protein Per 100 g 2) Chicken Breast: 23.1 g Protein Per 100 g 3) Canned Tuna: 23.6 g Protein Per 100 g 4) Lean Pork Chop: 22.4 g Protein Per 100 g 5) Sockeye Salmon: 21.3 g Protein Per 100 g 6) Lentils: 25.8 g Protein Per 100 g 7) Shrimp: 20.3 g Protein Per 100 g 😎 Sardines: 20.9 g Protein Per 100 g 9) Lamb Chop: 20.4 g Protein Per 100 g 10) Cocoa: 20 g Protein Per 100 g 11) Cod: 17.9 g Protein Per 100 g 12) Cheddar Cheese: 24.9 g Protein Per 100 g 13) Pumpkin Seeds: 18.5 g Protein Per 100 g 14) Beef Jerky: 33.2 g Protein Per 100 g (Dont know if we can eat this) 15) Nutritional Yeast: 50 g Protein Per 100 g 16) Turkey Breast: 24.6 g Protein Per 100 g 17) Parmesan Cheese: 35.8 g Protein Per 100 g 18) Whey Protein: 70 g Protein Per 100 g 19) Dried Squid: 72 g Protein Per 100 g 20) Mackerel: 18.6 g Protein Per 100 g' Then there's also things like Peas, Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Sprouts, Mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, Edamame, Sweet corn, Winter Squash and Yummy Avocados. Hope this helps
  2. Hi everyone I had my sleeve last week on Thu 3rd nov and everything has been great with no complications and no side effects until 1 week post op I developed a red itchy rash on my stomach area only no where else on my body. I put the itching down to incision healing but it has gotten worse over night by already across my entire stomach and has kept me up itching like hell!! I have contacted my doctor for advice but wondered if anyone else has experienced this? I still have my sutures and bandages on, they come off on day 10.

Obsessed with food, cooking, feeding people

I completely get the need-to-cook thing as I've always loved cooking and baking. Post-op I would leap at the chance to cook because when it's just myself and my partner, I don't really do it like I used to and I love the whole process. I missed it so much I recently took a second job as a cafe cook, which is a job I haven't done in well over 10 years (and currently on hold after breaking my leg but that's another story). But it scratches the cooking itch! I'm very much in the love-cooking-for-people-but-not-eating-it camp. If you're eating your efforts with strict portion control then I also don't see the problem. If you're grazing while cooking though, be careful there!

    Stalls and plateaus

well my poop must be made of bricks then lol one of my fave past times a couple years ago was doing before and after weigh ins for poop times (and pees, showers, eating a large meal, menstual cycles, workouts, etc, but i digress lol) ...and in the case of pooping, i almost always weigh less after. mind u i only poop every 3 days or so (a post-wls phenomenon for me), so i get pretty backed up. there have been a couple/few times i went on vacay (or had surgery) and didn't poop for like 10+ days and when i finally did i would drop up to 2.5 lbs. *shudder*
  9. I got sleeved Oct 19 2022 . I absolutely can’t stand the chewable vitamins. I also have a hard time getting all my protein in . I just bought unflavored protein powder . Hopefully that will help .

    September surgery buddies!!

This week has been a game changer! 😎 I am finally able to get my protein and food in without throwing up! I've also found a high-protein drink I can finally stand! It's a Vanilla Premier Protein (I got a big box of them from Costco) heated up in the microwave for 90 seconds, then I mix in 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (just the chocolate, no sugar), and a shake of cayenne. It's delicious, warm for the colder season, and a very easy way to get in 32 g of protein, 10 g carbs. 😘 Hydration-wise, I have found that the mango peach Crystal Light is my favorite and is the easiest for me to drink water without getting sick of it. I hope you all are thriving! 😊

    Passed psych eval!

After reading other people's experiences here when they had their psych evaluations, I wasn't nervous at all. I went in and took a test of about 300 questions which took me about a half hour. Then later I met with the doctor and he asked some questions about my lifestyle, work, family, history of anxiety etc. I was in there about 10 minutes and he passed me! On to my last two dietician appointments and hopefully I will get a surgery date for me bypass!

    Round 1 million 1

Is your revision from sleeve to bypass? Don't worry, for what I hear and read on here the recovery is almost identical. In addition, the pre-op and post-op diets are just about the same too. I had bypass. 10 day limited pre-op diet. Post-op was 2 weeks clear/full liquids, 2 weeks pureed foods, 2 weeks soft foods and then slowly transition back to a normal diet. Take it slow, test new foods 1 at a time so if you get sick you know exactly what caused it. You got this!

    Food Before and After Photos

Also, today was a meal prep day! for kids’ breakfast this week (not pictured, forgot to grab a photo sorry) 10 bacon egg and cheese burritos, 10 sausage, egg and cheese burritos, 10 Canadian bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, 6 egg and cheese sandwiches, and pancakes. This took about an hour total. freezer meals (pictured in my very disorganized freezer) 2 pepper steaks, 1 beef mushroom roast, 3 stuffed pepper soup, 2 creamy Italian chicken, 2 balsamic chicken, 2 corn lime chicken, 2 sweet and sour chicken, and 2 extra bags of chicken ready for other meals. So 14 dinner meals plus 2 extras which took maybe 2 hours total. I can just dump them in the slow cooker in the mornings and have dinner ready without much effort. Also, an unknown child spilled something in there (I’m thinking blueberries) and by the time I was done and saw it 😒 … It can wait another day.

    30 minute drinking rule

Yeh I know. 🙄 I was given instructions by the dietician that the liquid girt could include liquified meats also- eww! I did chew that little piece of chicken until it was liquid. Yuk. And yeh, the square of chocolate was so sweet it was sickly. Ugh!. Anyway, So far no issues thank God but yeh- I completely forgot about the 30 min waiting period until I was about 8 days in and saw a comment on FB from another person who had brought up the drinking during eating issue- I haven’t drunk during eating, it’s just I had not allowed a full 30 mins pre or post eating at that stage.. Im day 13 now and see the surgeon and dietician today so I’ll talk to them again about too. So far I’m feeling good and having no issues with anything fingers crossed.. I’ve lost 10 kg since the beginning of pre op. Wtf?! It’s ridiculous how well this procedure works! I’m already in the 80kg zone and my blood pressure has redused to normal. It’s amazing. Anyway thanks for feedback! I was having an existential crisis anticipating worst case scenarios.
  15. My consultation was very simple/easy as my Dr was the one who brought up the surgery during an appointment about struggling with regular weight loss. We already knew I qualified. However the heavy stuff was in the 10 week class I was in (with Kaiser Permanente) they go over everything & anything! If you get the option to take classes, PLEASE take them, they are extremally helpful. My initial appointment was in May of this year & my surgery was 5 months later in Sept!
  16. I bought canned soup and strained them, only drinking the broth. This really opened up the flavor window, they all taste different. Rather than plain boring broth. You can always add unflavored protein powder to it too. I didn't so I wouldn't know how to do it. Other people ate what was left of the soup so it didn't go to waste. I was allowed yogurt, no chunks. You could add that if it is in your plan. Greek yogurt is high protein. They have gatorade zero with protein now, (considered clear protein drinks). I tried a few different ones, gatorade was my favorite. You could also try thinning out the protein shakes to change the consistency. Or get powder and make different mixtures. For example, I used sugar free lemonade and mixed strawberry protein for a strawberry lemonade protein shake. BUT I would also add more like 10-12 OZ of lemonade to thin it out and it was more like a drink rather than a thick shake. I have heard of people getting crafty, like vanilla powder and rootbeer flavored water for a rootbeer float. Or orange flavor with vanilla protein for a creamsicle. You get the point. haha I haven't tried any of this except my strawberry lemonade one, so I don't have an opinion on how they taste. Just a few suggestions, you got this!

    Travelling to get DS Surgery

I think that it partly depends upon how soon after surgery you are travelling, and then your individual experience with healing and recovery. Our surgeon had us stay in town for ten days, in order to have the first post op follow up visit in person, and then head home. That, and also just the basic conservatism of being local for the first few days as that is the time of greatest likelihood of complications needing rehospitalization (and with a DS, he doesn't want anyone else fooling around with your insides if something does need to be done, as uncommon as that may be.) On bathroom issues, most any of us are subject to problems early on as our systems get used to the changes that were made (you may have run into some of them with your sleeve - constipation being the most common, but it can go the other way too...... As you aren't eating much then, there is proportionately less coming out the other end, but again, the diet is different and your system may object, no matter which surgery you have. The DS is known for bathroom issues, but it overall isn't greatly different than what many RNY folks go through - it's just that many surgeons will emphasize it with the DS when they are trying to sell you on something else that they know how to do. The malabsorption will change things, and early on things may be more inconvenient or urgent until your diet gets squared away and you figure out what does and doesn't work for you. Up until Covid hit, we had a regular group support meeting that was primarily vets 10-20 years out that was a restaurant dinner event, and you wouldn't know that it was a group of primarily DSers in there (other than on average being more normal weight.)
  19. My partner and I would ride our bikes at dawn around the bay on the days I wasn't doing my second job and loving it until I fell off said bike seven weeks ago and broke my tibial plateau (along with tearing my ACL, PCL and meniscus). I've had to stay immobile for the first seven weeks because of the nature of the break (multiple pieces), and the surgeons wanting to try to heal the bone without surgery. I have a long road of physio to get back ON my bike, but get back on I will, since I'll likely never run again after this injury. ACL reconstruction surgery is still on the table, depending on how things go. I will, however, be joining my local gym once I get the medical all clear because I enjoy weight training and will need to get strength back into my poor wasted leg. It's amazing how terrified I was of injuring myself when I was morbidly obese, and yet slim me managed to do this! Oops. This was a motorbike-level injury, achieved on a pushbike going at maybe 10km max, coming to slow turn. This seems to be my unwanted super-power - hurting myself badly doing the bare minimum. I don't even get a good story out of it! It's a skill! I only managed to do this because I stupidly took my hand off the handlebar to indicate a right turn, knowing full well I don't have good one-handed balance. So lesson here is learned. I have NEVER felt pain like I did with this injury. Knocked the gallstone attack pain right off the top of the ladder, and I thought that was bad (not even close!). 0/10, don't recommend!
  20. I use cal - mag liquid. I've attached photos. Have not had any issues and taste is good kinda thick but I wash the little cup I have. It has measurements on the side the nurse at the hospital gave me my pain meds in them and I asked if she could give me a few to take home( I got 10-12 ) of them. She was awesome!

    Food Before and After Photos

Totchoes (tater tot Nachos) This was someone else’s appetizer but I had about 10 and was too full to eat what I ordered (turkey burger) I really do forget sometimes that I cannot eat large portions until I eat out. Anyone else randomly forget about real world portion sizes?
  22. I am a 2x revision patient, starting with LapBand in 2011, followed by VSG in 2019 due to severe Lapband complications, and finally GBP in 2021 after even more complications with the VSG. I have been fighting the good fight for ELEVEN YEARS now, and trust me when I say I was so ready to give up many times during the process, but I am so glad that I never did! I am officially down 152 lbs, and have been maintaining within 3-4 lbs since Feb 2022. I am to the point that I am ready to start looking into plastics. After so many years of fighting to get to where I am, I love the way I look and feel.... when I'm fully dressed. But seeing all the loose skin is a hard mental hit every single time. All the work, tears, pain, determination.... it all feels like it's for nothing when I see the destruction it all left behind. After a lot of research on various options, I am heavily leaning towards the Beltline procedure due to the amount of work that will need to be done. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would love to hear all about it! Pros, cons, horror stories, success stories... I want it all!

    Reflux 2 days post op

Oh I am so sorry you’re having this experience! I’m glad you have more benefits than cons from having op though. I hear reflux is manageable with the right intervention. So far I’m now at day 10 post op- after about 2-3 days my reflux disappeared. I didn’t need the hernia repair thankfully. I think I was just reacting to the initial surgery and taking in liquids again.. I still have another 2.5 weeks of the pantoprazole meds t on hell with staple healing and hoping after that the reflux stays at bay. I really hope you glean get the reflux under control. Good luck!

    What does full feel like?

What our new signals may be can be different. Hiccups like you, sneezing or runny nose seem to be quite common. Me, I don’t have a physical reaction like those. Sometimes my tummy will start to rumble, grumble & squelch. In many ways I have a similar feeling of fullness to what I always got just not as extreme because I am more aware of when that feeling starts (sort of heaviness). I rely more on asking myself if I need the next bite or just want it. I often will put down my fork or spoon with food on it because I realise I don’t need that bite. Sometimes I may have that bite 5 or 10 minutes later. I still have my restriction but I only feel that if I‘ve eaten a little too fast (I’m still a slow eater) or if something is too heavy, not sitting well or sometimes for no obvious reason.
  25. Hello, on Sept 14th I had a revision from the lap-band to the Gastric Sleeve. Pre-surgery liquid diet I went from 235 to 212 on the liquid diet for about 10 days. I have only lost a total of 2 pounds, and I am 7 weeks out. I am very frustrated at this point. I am doing everything I am supposed to be doing. I could walk a little more, but other than that I am only consuming around 800 calories a day. I am not comprehending the science of this. I burn around 1600 calories a day, so why am I not losing weight? I do need to mention that I am going through menopause and had to go off of my hormones for 4 weeks after surgery but have been back on them now for 3 weeks. I was also diagnosed with a under-active thyroid about 9 months ago and am on 25MG of thyroid medication. I am at the point where I just feel no matter what I do I am not going to lose. Has anyone else experienced no weight loss right after surgery and how long did it last? I am trying to stay positive, and everyone keeps telling me not to pay attention to the scale, but I am a numbers person. I absolutely dread going to my next dietician appointment in two and half weeks because my last one which was my first post op appointment, she told me I should be losing more than 2 pounds in one month. I guess I just need to know if others have experienced this. I am about ready to give up.
