    Weight Regain After Gastric Sleeve

Hey Dimples58, Soooooooo.....drinking after wls is truly different for every person. I was also advised by my medical crew that I would not be able to tolerate much alcohol, BUT this was not true for me. I can drink a sailor under the table. Lol! This is not good though because it's a lot of calories and causes weight gain. My first attempt was a shot of whiskey about 6 months post op and I felt nothing. The only time I feel it quickly is if I don't eat first.
  2. This has been my experience on who to tell? I just had my lapband done May 25th and initially told just immediate family members and two close friends. I was reluctant to tell a sister who quite frankly, has been condescending relative to my weight gain over the past ten years. To my surprise.... my two close friends were more than supportive and did have the capacity and sensitivity to understand the weight struggle (they both have weight issues but are not considered morbidly obese as I am.) My point being, I for one, am glad I chose to take a leap of faith and tell them because I do have thier support and it helps a lot, with one caveat, do not tell people that you know are not supportive or opportunistic in trying to sabatoge your weight loss journey. Just my two cents.
  3. I am scheduled for surgery on 10-21 and now weigh 219 and am 5"9 I get it all the time but I have a bad history of weight gain and loss and would like to be at 150 or 160 and just stay. I am hoping my band will help me MAINTAIN!
  4. I went to my PMD today and lost 3.5 pounds this month. I spoke with him about my concerns and we had a long chat. During my wait for insurance approval, I am going to attend some WLS support groups in person and I also scheduled a second appointment with the nutritionist to discuss some things. As far as my mother and sister being anorexic - I am not afraid of ever going there. You are right though, an eating disorder is either stuffing or starving...I guess I have a tendency to stuff:blushing::tt2: I haven't had weight problems all of my life, just the past 8 years. I know some things that have triggered my weight gain, i.e., fertility med's, grief, and changing careers from being busy to sitting at a computer all day. I agree that I do need to talk with someone about emotional eating and I plan to. I, by no means, think that the band will "make me skinny." I know I will have to do the work and the band is just a tool - I really do know this. I am just wondering if I will be hungry just like if I were to be on another diet. I worry that I will be one of the posters that will be starving and have my band filled to the max. How does everyone else deal with head hunger. Is there anyone out there that has problems with emotional eating and the band helped them?

    Cancer Weight Gain

First of all, you still look great--I can't see much of a difference between April 2018 and December 2019. However, the more important issue is your health. I'm sure that cancer had a huge physical and emotional impact on you, and right now you should focus on your recovery from cancer more than on your weight issues. (I say this as a cancer survivor myself.) You can deal with your weight once you are clearly on the other side of the cancer. Please don't beat yourself up about your relatively small weight gain. You have been through a lot!
  6. Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice and encouragement. I had my weight loss surgery in December 2016, so I'm 3.5 years out now. I dropped around 160 pounds, from my biggest being 360 and my smallest being 187. I was so blessed to lose so much in about 14 months. Maintenance was relatively easy at first. I purposefully gained 15 pounds because being 6'2 with a large build, 187 started getting me questions about being sick. 200-205 is my personal goal and sweet spot, where I feel the best and think I look the best. Fast forward to September 2019. I was having my first endoscopy since my surgery, as a follows up to Barrett's esophagus that was found when I had my bypass. What I thought would be routine, turned worst case scenario when I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Apparently I'm in that 2% that has Barrett's that actually progresses to cancer. Luckily we caught it very early stage and I have been able to have ablation therapy treatment versus the typical chemo and radiation. I've developed recurrent esophageal stricture due to scar tissue from ablation therapy, causing me to choke frequently. Needless to say, it's all been very scary, and my eating got out of whack for a while. I've quickly gained weight and I'm at 220.2 today. I need to lose 20 pounds ASAP. The current COVID-19 situation and working from home, having access to food 24/7 coupled with stress eating is proving difficult to overcome. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has words of encouragement or advice to help me get back on track quickly. 3.5 years and I was very proud to be maintaining at my goal weight of around 200, and now I'm scared the scale will continue to creep up on me.
  7. I am currently in the same situation and I feel like my ship is sinking fast... I was banded December 7th 2009, and I have lost about 8 pounds since then! I am up to 9cc's in an 11'cc band and I can still eat bread, have never had anything get "stuck", never slimed or PB'd or anything that lets me know I am in band land. I can not eat quite as much as I used to pre-band, but I can eat ALL the same foods. I had taken up walking 3 miles a day 3-4 times a week and I did this for a month thining that would give me a "boost" and when I went to the doctor last month - again - NOTHING. I don't have any motivation and I am starting to regret putting my body through this for it not to work. I have ugly scars in my stomach from this operation and only 8 pounds to show for it. I didn't tell many of my friends or family about having surgery, but those that I told didn't think I "needed" it and now that I'm six months out and still look the same, all I am getting is "I told you so's"... I did my research and I thought I was making the best choice for me to FINALLY get a hold of my weight gain and after being initally denied by my insurance, when my appeal got approved I was rejoicing!! I thought this was it and all the years of battling my bulge would soon be behind me as me and my band tackled the never ending world of food... NOT so much. I am torn between going for my appointment next week and just saying "to hell with it" and not going back at all anymore. The doctor has already told me that I am the only patient he has ever had that has had this much fluid in their band and still not be fully restricted. ~sighs~

    Negative People

I mentioned it to my family, not as in I was going to do it, but as something my friend did. I think people are just ignorant on all the facts. It is the unknown, they just don't understand the pain of the weight gain/loss over and over and over..... They don't realize how we live our lives and how obsessed we are with food, feeling uncomfortable, how we put our lives on hold to do this or do that, the next diet, the time wasted thinking about it.... My mom and husband are the only ones who know I am doing it, and a friend who actually had it done a year ago (and I was one of those ignorant people, who had doubts, but I kept it to myself and supported her no matter what) Now I know better and am scheduled to do it myself January 5. My mom actually told me she thinks this is to radical of a thing to do and that I should just have a butt reduction!!!!! That doesn't change the fact that I over eat. I can eat more than my husband! Even if I do Atkins, vegan lifestyle, I still don't lose because my portions are to big. In the end, only we know the pain we have suffered, the time wasted and how FREE we will feel to eat like a normal person, to actually stop when we are full, now because we physcially have to. Sometimes I think my mom wouldn't know how to deal with me thin, I think she thinks I will change. Maybe we are safe overweight for people. On the other hand, my husbnad is so happy he won't be forced to go on another diet with me. He says when ever I do another diet, he is forced to do it too! He has to also go through the emotional roller coaster ride I take every time I start something new or recycled, start to lose weight, start to gain it back.... Do it for yourself. You are the one who lives in your own skin. I am doing this for me! Audree

    The Fat Kid

I also fear going back to the places I was as I lose this weight. As I hit new milestones I think "this is what I was doing at this weight in my life". The emotional and physical abuse I suffered was the main reason for my weight gain and going through it again will be hard. I have spent the last 24 years of my total 30 on earth building up this wall of fat to protect me. I am ready now to get it off and hopefully deal with the reasons behind it. Thank you for sharing this. It really hit home with me. And also gives me hope that I can go through it and make to the other side.
  11. I thank those who post about sudden or long term problems with the band. It would appear things are going along ok for some of them for years and then big problems and weight gain. Frankly, this scares me. I've adjusted to banded life for over 8 years and am very compliant....but hear others are as well and then BOOM ... Their life changes. Maybe long term success with the band people just don't post often? I know there are many of us out in the world????just wanting to believe that I suppose
  12. I'm not sure about the liquids for some reason Iv never been a big drinker of anything so the band just increased what was already a struggle with the whole don't drink and eat thing and wait 30 mins. I didn't revise only because of reflux, It was managed with Prilosec well enough but more so because of just sick of the whole lifestyle that came with the band. Yes I could have loosened or unfilled but only with weight gain. Iv not had even a slight bit of reflux since removing the band but I also had a hiatal hernia repair during the revision. I had many barium swallows over the years since I worked in the surgeons office, a few dilated pouches that I would refill for about a month to correct but they never fully corrected. My esophagus is still dilated even in my recent X-rays.

    Fingers Crossed

I go back to the doctor on November 13 for a check up that's long over do. I'm hoping to get my second fill and headed toward the GREEN ZONE. Keeping fingers crossed that my stomach has not stretched from my weight gain.

    Something For Me!

I developed PCOS when I was in my early 20s, which brought on rapid weight gain and an inability to lose (this was the diagnosis after a few years of doctor visits to determine the weight gain). I'm 43 now, and though I never wanted to have children, I do wish the sleeve surgery had been discovered sooner. Because 20 years later, I can assure you that weight loss remains impossible with PCOS. You have the opportunity to change your life before you miss any of the living you have to do. Excited for you and the way you'll be able to change your life. A woman in my WLS support group lost 200 lbs with the sleeve, had a baby, and then took off the weight immediately. She and baby are healthy and happy! Cheers to your choice and future success!

    I need support- im terrified.

Pregnancy is a difficult time to remain compliant with our diet...but some weight gain is expected, so be accepting of that. With 2 of my pregnancies, I gained 85 pounds, and then 65 pounds, and I did not have the band. I lost all of the weight both times, but it took over a year to do so. Don't allow yourself to get too concerned, as then it will become a recurrent cycle for your thoughts. As Dee wisely mentioned, keep, drinking your fluids. Any Snacks should have Protein. Try to only eat bandster friendly foods. Make it more difficult to get to those foods which you know you to be less preferred for a bandster, and measure your portions for everything. Be ok with any weight gain, it will only be temporary. Best wishes for a happy Labor Day!

    birth control and wls

Aside from the time when I wanted to get pregnant, I've been on birth control since 16. I haven't noticed any weight gain. I love having a regular cycle and shorter periods. Yay!!! Do what you need to do. If you do experience some weight gain, I'm sure it will be minimal.

    Esophageal Pain

I had similar problems for months, X-rays, barium swallow... Still nothing. I ended up having to have my band emptied and after a CT and Hida scan they realized it was my gallbladder. Bad thing is now I'm feeling very defeated by my band. Up 25 lbs since last year, finally keeping food down but feeling bad about the weight gain. Any tips to get back in the game?

1st Memory of my Problem Foods

This came up last night with a girlfriend of mine and in high school I always thought I was fat compared to the other girls. I weighed in my senior year at 130lbs (OMG! to be that now!) and to me that was fat because all the other girls weighed 110lbs!!! Silly right? At the time though high school was big deal and image was everything. But I still got the guys...no doubt in that! But as I got older and got married in 1993 and then pregnant...I gained a bunch of weight, 220ish, with my son and then I got divorced in 1995 and lost that weight and went down to about 145-150 and then I was doing really good until I married again and got pregnant AGAIN! And I gained a bunch with her and then I started going to the gym and dropped down to about 215 and then that stopped and I got aggrevated and went to Jenny Craig and got down to 200 (never broke the 100's) and then that came to a halt...I gained more and then finally had this done. I don't relate eating and food to anything bad in my childhood. I think with me it has to do with getting moving and motivated and putting down the food!!! Bad choices and loving the flavor too much and the enjoyment of a good pastry!!! Or too many fruit smoothies and cokes. So to narrow it down...my weight gain is fueled by being lazy and addicted to sweets!
  20. No it's not causing weight gain for me..but I stopped losing for a long time now and about junk food I noticed that I can eat more of it easier than other food ..still the sleeve stops me at some point ofcourse..thats why I really need to be more careful..I started to write down everything I have during the day, something like food diary..hope it'll help..

    Don't Be Like Me...

I have to add that everyone's experience w/ the band is different. My band indeed restricts what I can and cannot eat. For example, heavy breads like pizza are impossibles for me. I have hard times with pasta and rices too...and I'm not complaining. I no longer crave it and it's helped me tremendously in the carb reduction department. Some meats can be problems like thick cut meats or dry meats so I take precautions and make slim cuts, marinate and ensure I don't over cook them. The band will NEVER prevent you from eating sliders and of course those are the culprits (ie milkshakes, icecream, cookies, cake etc) they dissolve readily and slide right past the band with some serious ramifications in the end (weight gain!). You still need to exercise self control. The plus side (for me) is that when you are in green the band does help limit the quantity you can eat and thus cheat days don't have near the damage it use to have

What to do when you can't sleep?

Lyrica causes weight gain. A friend of mine is on it and she says it makes her very hungry. Elavil did that to me. It makes me crave sugar like crazy. ambien for me is the only thing that has no side effects. BBK, are you going to get an unfill? You could easily add a little bit of food back into your diet to stop losing. I wish I had that problem! I am struggling to lose 1 lb.

    November Banders

@@Ldimples I am so sorry about your dog. My family always had toy poodles when I was growing up. I can't say for sure but I am guessing the weight gain is due to swelling or Water retention, etc. It's good you're up and walking. Wishing you a continued good and speedy recovery.

    why is this so hard

Bandster, keep your chin up! Everyone loses at different rates. I had to up my water intake and cut out sodium because the water weight was a drag. The scale showed a 5 lb weight gain just last week. But as soon as I made those changes, the scaled moved in the right direction. Make sure you are following the band recommended foods, drink plenty of water and get into an exercise routine that you can stick with. Start slow if you have to and increase it when you can. Just make sure it is something you can live with. Talk to your Dr. about your restriction level. Good luck!

Don't allow "following in your mom's footsteps" in terms of weight gain be an option. It's only an option if you allow it to become one. Understand that weight gain IS possible, even with these major surgerys, but it can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle and staying focused. Good luck!
