  1. This coming Tuesday I will be four weeks out from RNY surgery. I have been using the Orgain protein shakes which are vegetable protein. I mix those with almond milk and add fruit to them every morning. I also use the Orgain high protein shakes, which are organic whey protein. I have made lentil soup and a vegetarian chili, in the chili I used an organic meat substitute that did not contain soy or wheat. I have felt very good and have not had any issues in the bathroom.
  2. I don't bother with breads or Pasta. They don't give me a good nutrition bang for the buck and they end up sitting there making me feel uncomfortable. To me that's counter productive to the surgery. #Noworthit I've only been out twice. Once with my sister we went to the diner I love for Breakfast. I was finally on the soft foods so I got a vegetable omelet with cheese. I ended up bring most of it home. I think it took breakfast, lunch and dinner to eat it all, but it was good! I was told at my 6 week appt I could start adding regular foods as tolerated. I'm vegetarian so we went to this vegetarian Soul food place I like. I got mock BBQ chicken, collard greens and brown rice. Again I have most of it left over, but I'll nibble on it tomorrow. I have lots of food allergies and I'm vegetarian. My family has always been really accommodating with this so this new stage hasn't been an issue for them.
  3. Hi Della, Are you are you vegetarian or vegan? There is a ton of protein rich soy products available from Gardein, Morning Star, etc that are pretty delicious. Also, there is a product called Unjury that is unflavored/unsweetened that is 21 grams per scoop that I have been adding to soups, stews, etc. Their "chicken soup" flavor doesn't contain any animal products other than whey.

    African American Sleevers

I had a really easy time of it. No pain at all! I was walking in recovery, and continued walking once in my room. I was in the hospital 2 days and only needed tylenol once for a headache. Otherwise I was fine. I didn't even bother to get the prescription for pain meds filled when I was discharged. As for soul food eating, I'm already a little different because I am vegetarian. I eat collard greens but I don't add pork or turkey to them. In fact tonight I treated myself to the Soul Food vegetarian restaurant in my area. I had mock BBQ chicken, collards and brown rice. My hair is loc'd. Because I am menopausal I already was taking Biotin. So far I haven't noticed any hair loss. Once I came home the worse thing was a rash where the IV site & every bandaide was. That was due to late allergies and even none latex bandages have a small amount of latex in the glue. For most people it's not a concern, but I have multiple allergies and I'm hypersensitive. A few days using hydro-cortisone cream cleared the rash up. Also for the first few weeks I got tired really easy. I felt pretty normal after a week, but ran out of steam really fast. My best advice is relax, follow the doctor's recommendations as closely as possible.

    constipation! !

I never had a problem with constipation but I am vegetarian. I was put on a stool softener 2 x's a day for the first month. Thinking back to my pre-op days what made a difference was green leafy veg and plenty of Water. As mentioned try to get in a salad each day and drink plenty of water. even then you may need to take a stool softener regularly.

    Puree need more protein

I too pureed everything. Being a vegetarian it was a bit of a challenge. I found that CVS whey powder had 26 grams of Protein. So every morning I started with a shake made with unsweetened almond milk and a scoop of almond butter. It was a nice boost to start the day, clocking on at 31 grams of protein. I also used prosource noncarb Liquid Protein. I'd but the neutral flavor and add it to herbal tea. Moving onto food, I made a soft scrambled egg with a tiny bit of shredded cheese and a tsp of 0% plain greek yogurt. Once a week I made Soups using Beans or root veg like squash or sweet potato, spinach and corresponding protein powders. I mixed salsa with greek yogurt, or mashed a bit of fresh fruit and had that with greek yogurt. I also had plain veg broth at night as a treat if I made my protein goal throughout the day. Even now I prefer to start my day with a Protein Shake. I usually woke out in the mornings and the big protein boost give me enough energy to work out but isn't too heavy on my stomach that I get sick.
  7. Like many I have always had a weight problem. Chubby kid, that grew into a chubby teen and eventually turned into a morbidly obese adult. The one thing different is I always thought I was cute. I was't ashamed of my curves and had an active and happy social life. However in my 40's things started to change. I got uterine cancer and was told that excess weight could put me in a line for a recurrence. I would diet on and off, losing and gaining 30 - 50 lbs each time. I was a frequent exercisers but slowly things like walking became more of a challenge. At 45 I had a wake up call. I got a severe bout of facial shingles that completely knocked me on my butt. I promised then and there to do better for myself. I joined a gym, began working out and once again lost 35lbs. Then I got sick again and regained it all plus 10 more. I have multiple allergies and between that and the after effects of older illnesses, I was on a cycle of get better, get sick, regain. A friend of mind had GPS and did really well. I decided to investigate for myself. I looked at 2 local hospitals programs, gathered my information and decided between the GPS and the sleeve. I decided the sleeve was for me and went with my friend's doctor. My process couldn't have been easier. They provided me with a binder that listed all the testing I needed to have done. The doctor sent in the request for authorization to my insurance company ( I was approved on the first request). I didn't have to lose any weight pre-surgery. They quite literally walked me through the whole process. I had a vena cava filter placed as a precaution and on 09/18/14 I had the gastric sleeve done laproscopically. Hospital course was a breeze. I was walking in recovery. In fact I had to pee and they asked if I wanted a bedpan or could I walk. I opted to walk. I had to go so bad, I practically ran into the bathroom and the nurses laughed. I was in the hospital for 2 days. Only mild pain, no worse than a bad cramp and not gas pains at all. They arranged a visiting nurse since I live alone. She discharged me after my 2 week follow up since I was doing so well. I am 6 weeks post op. I'll be having my vena cava filter removed as soon as possible. So far I'm down 32lbs and feeling great. My biggest challenges are being a vegetarian with food allergies on an already limited diet, but I am making it work! Best decision I ever made. In fact, I wish I had done this sooner.

    Green Smoothies

I've watched the video that you posted a few months before surgery. He is not an advocate of "protein first" 6 months post op. As a vegetarian, I found this philosophy and his research to back the idea, quite interesting. I am doing further research into the notion of eating vegetables first before doing it myself.

    Australia - Melbourne

Hi Leanne. Thanks for the warm welcome. Yep, I'm going for the sleeve! I'm hoping to try scaling back my portion sizes a bit as it gets closer (and the devil on my shoulder keeps banging on about living it -or eating it- up while I can). I am vegetarian so I suppose I will have to get creative about protein intake but what do you recommend on the vitamins front?

questions for my plant based friends

New here. I was sleeved on 9/18 but I've been vegetarian for a very long time. So far I've lost 30lbs. I've been eating a lot of cheese, yogurt and eggs with the occasional nut butter. I prefer using a nutra bullet over my juicer so I retain the Fiber. The only thing I'm adding right now is spinach so I don't overwhelm my tummy. My biggest challenge was finding a Protein powder. I am allergic to food dyes and stevia. I prefer to limit my soy intake. I finally went with a whey powder that I usually add some nut butter to in order to mask the taste. I'd like to eventually transition to vegan eating.

    Coconut water?

My daughter in law is a vegetarian and truly the healthiest human being I've ever known..in so many ways. She takes her health very seriously. She SWEARS by coconut water. I think I'll pick some up. Thanks!
  12. My Nut said it is perfectly fine. Focus on beans, peas, tofu, etc. There are also vegetarian and vegan protein supplements. She was very supportive. I am an animal rescuer so have thought about this for a while. Now that meat no longer agrees with me, I am moving that direction and am excited about it.
  13. @@Bufflehead This sounds delicious. I am trying to stay away from red meat. I was a vegetarian for about 10 years during my 30's and now just cutting red meat from my diet. I'll do this with chicken! Thanks for the tip!!!

    Vegetarian/Vegan RNY Oct. 2014 surgery

Since my surgery 10/14/14 I have been on a primarily vegetarian diet. My energy is great, I am sleeping well, and I have healed quickly. Some of the unpleasant side effects I have heard about I have not experienced, such as extreme (and noxious) gas, or constipation. I went back to work 1 week after surgery and started working out 13 days after. I have yet to weight myself, I'm waiting for my 1 month Dr. appt.
  15. I'm just starting the journey -- what kinds of protein do you veterans eat? Thanks!

    I am so hungry!

My first month I spent convinced I was going to open a vegetarian culinary school. I would watch Jamie Oliver on YouTube and dream about food all night long. I learned that I had a physical feeling I associated with hunger that was really a form of anxiety. Without food to sedate it my mind panicked and started to obsess about "the precious". Don't fight it. Feel it. Observe it. But do not engage with it. Study its habits so you know how to stab it in its eyeballs a year from now when it tries to sneak back in.
  17. Not trying to be inflammatory, but my surgeon refuses to do bariatric surgery on vegetarians or vegans because he does not believe it is possible to get enough protein in without excessive carb calories. I have no idea if that's true or not.
  18. Go down to the Food and Nutrition section on this site to find out about vegetarian and vegan foods.

    Vegetarian/Vegan RNY Oct. 2014 surgery

I was thinking of going vegetarian. Not sure how to get protein in with out animals , dairy products. Any input?
  20. Would like to know how many RNY'ers have decided to follow a plant based diet post op. How are you feeling, healing and how is your energy level. What are your go to foods in each phase? What is your surgeons advice if you have decided not to use animal Protein?

    All the Alberta girls

I have the same problem Kim.....meat is hard for me to eat. I was a vegetarian pre-op, so this is a huge overhaul for me lol. I can do chicken and turkey so far. I eat a lot (a lottttttt) of cottage cheese, its a good option once you are able to eat it (I am not sure what your surgeons eating plan is) Drinking Protein is a good way to get it in as well...I still drink a shake now and again. Welcome to the loser's bench

    Protein

I will be having surgery spring 2015 and I am trying to increase my Protein intake prior to surgery so that by the time I have my surgery it won't be such a challenge. I am a vegetarian so protein intake is already a struggle. What are some of the best sources (vegetarian) of protein that you have found and what are your favorite protein powders? Thanks!
  23. I am 7 weeks and finding that meat is really kind of repulsive to me now. But I am eating dairy and eggs. Peas, beans, and nuts taste so good. I hope to go vegetarian after I lose more weight, then hopefully vegan when close to goal .
  24. I was a vegetarian but I ate a lot of junk. I eat meat and ate a lot of junk. I would love to try again now that I know more about nutrition. Lets all start a group
  25. I am 6 weeks on Wed. Trying to get most of my protein via food. Turkey works well (deli and ground), cheese, tuna, and eggs mostly. Have had baked chicken once. Tried ground sirloin, did not work so avoiding beef and also have not tried pork. Actually, my main food addictions were meats and sugar. Now anything sweet tastes awful and meats also are unappealing. I may end up a vegetarian yet as the things that taste best to me are different types of beans and cheese. The good news is my A1C and cholesterol are way down so that's a huge win. I am able to sleep without my cpap, am down a size or 2 depending on the clothes, and can walk distances that made my back hurt previously. So having some foods taste bad is a price I will pay happily although I was very frustrated by it initially. Oh, and not sure of total weight loss as I only weigh at the doctors but I think it's around 40 lbs counting my 2 week pre-op. All in all, still learning and adjusting, but feel I am ahead of the curve and on the right road now.
