  1. I use dr. Touliatos at trinity. He's the one who put my lap band in. I really like him. By the way, I loved the band- it totally worked for me. But unfortunately the stupid thing broke down & eroded into my stomach! So I had to get it out. Now dr. Touliatos doesn't even do bands anymore! So he recommended the sleeve. I'm really worried BCBS is gonna reject it - even though its a "revision surgery" due to the band erosion.
  2. Hello All- I am scheduled for Sleeve Revision to Mini-Bypass on Sept 29th. I do not have enough vacation time to take extended time off, so I will be returning to work in 5 days. I am having my surgery with Dr. Ilan. Any tips, advice, input, or expectations you would like to share? I took off 2 weeks with my sleeve and was bored to tears after about 5 days. So, I'm confident I'll be fine to return to my desk job so quickly. Also, it has been rumored that my weight loss will much slower with the second surgery than it was with the Sleeve. Anybody have any insight on this? Thanks in advance.

Help! I Don't Know What To Do!

My daughter had the band put in a year ago and did not have very good success. She has PCOS and a knee injury that prevents her from heavy aerobic exercise. We initially looked at the sleeve for both of us - her as a revision and my initial, but my insurance would not cover. Having talked to the surgeon and done my own research, the RNY is the best, most effective surgery for rapid weight loss. I, like you, was concerned about dumping and malabsorption, but seeing how successful RNY is for most people AND it is the most popular surgery, I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I know that for heaving patients, they like to do the band first, then after a significant weight loss, then they go in, remove the band and perform the RNY. Good luck to you. My suggestion, don't wait!
  4. My insurance pays for revision surgery, but I am still waiting on word from them... It seems like they are willing (if I meet their unknown requirements) to pay 100% after deductible. Sadly for me, the requirements are apparently obscure, unlike the original requirements of 5 year history, 40 BMI (or 30 BMI with comorbidity), and 6 month supervised diet...
  5. I have BCBS of Illinois, and they approved my revision last week. I don't have a slip or eroision. I just wasn't getting good restriction AND started regaining weight over the last year. Aslo, like Wheetsin said, call the insurance company. I started calling the day after my paperwork was submitted. I'm sure they are used to patients calling to question the status all of the time.
  6. I am from atlanta and looking to get a revision ! I previously had the sleeve. Any suggestions on surgeons?? I will be self paying as my insurance does not cover 😞😭 Has anyone else had surgery in Georgia and have a surgeon they love?? Anyone had revision surgery here in Georgia? I previously had my sleeve surgery done with Dr Richards at Gwinnett but wasn’t too thrilled.
  7. Looking for support and knowledge. I had my band placed in September 2012 first half went great down 100 lbs and so much energy ! My friends thought I started drugs! Super happy right!?! Then I got my band to tight and it's been down hill since. Finally after a year and a half of absolutely no energy and terrible heartburn, even while taking omeprozole, I finally convinced them to do the scope. Well now I have Barrett's esophagus that my band has caused and a high risk of it developing into cancer. Devastated at this point but optimistic that the revision surgery will go great and I can get back to life. Waiting for insurance approval and a surgery date! Looking forward to being in this group for much needed support! My family lost someone close to me hem who had gastric so they are not supportive of my decision to want to be healthy and run someday!

    Need a Melbourne surgeon!! HELP!!

I would highly recommend The Centre for Bariatric Surgery in The Avenue, Prahran. There's several surgeons there, they all operate at The Avenue Private - the number is 9520 9520. I had Gary Crosthwaite, he was great, there's Paul O'Brien - who was one of the band's original inventors in its current form, um, Wendy Brown if you want a female surgeon, and several others. More importantly there's a great group of doctors to access for your aftercare and fills. Its a fairly convenient location if you're on that side of the city. There's also other surgeons at The Valley Private, and Peninsula Private if those areas suit better, and I read in the local paper that its now being done at St John Of God in Berwick too. Costs for me were $3,500 3 years ago, DH paid $4,000 last June, its pretty similar everywhere - the arrangement usually being that private health insurance/medicare covers it all except for that one fee, which once you've paid it, all your fills, aftercare and (god forbid) any revision surgery will be totally bulk billed, so there will be no cost for you in the future. Hope that helps!

    Help! Acid reflux:( debating removal

I am having the exact same problem. He has removed all fluid and they think I might have something called Achalasia - my doctor wants me to consider revision to gastric bypass but I have an insurance policy (different from when I was banded) that is going to give me problems because my BMI is 37 and the only co-morbidity is PCOS which he says they don't really count. And if I have achalasia he said he cannot do any surgery. so I have to see a specialist and go from there. This band has made my life a living hell.
  10. Thanks iwannabslim, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too. Funny how they they keep things to themselves. My insurance says they will pay for revision if either band erosion or slippage OR infection around the port site. It doesn't say anything about leakage, but one would think, a defect should be covered. I'll keep you posted.
  11. I had my lapband in 2008. My band has a leak. They sent the paperwork to my insurance ( Optima ) and they gave their approval within 2 weeks for me to have the band to sleeve revision. They pay for all of it. My surgery is May 3

Fill from Dr. Pleatman in Michigan

He is my choice for my revision surgery when I need one. When the band "expires" i am all over going to him to have a conversion surgery.

    Waiting game...

It'll be quicker than you think! It only took my insurance 5 days to respond for my revision surgery. When is your anticipated surgery date?

    Lap Band or Gastric Sleeve?

lap band or gastric sleeve EnergyTank I am biased because i have the sleeve i have happily been in "sleeveland" for 2+ years i have heard that the lapband is becoming extinct my dr and many other docs don't/won't even perform the lapband there is a thread called band to gastric sleeve revision what does that tell you?? many people have had problems with their lapband erosion with the lapband et al lapband had to be removed "lappers" please don't be mad at me, just stating my thoughts"" then people usually/frequently will get the sleeve me/many/most sleevers here never had any complications there can ALWAYS be complications with any surgery but.....i think 99.999999% of people (like me) had no major issues post surgery i can see you are a smart cookie, and will hopefully make the correct decision to have the sleeve good luck guy kathy
  15. My heaviest weight was 370. In 2010 I had the band installed (such a mistake, waste of time, money and effort IMO) March 10th, 2018 at my Pre-Surgical check in I was 310. March 21st, 2018 at check in for surgery I was 294.4. I had the band removed and revised to the bypass. Today, January 23rd, 2019. 308 days after surgery... I hit a number that I haven't seen in more than 20 years Onederland. I'm down 95 lbs since surgery, 110.6 lbs from pre-surgical. And a staggering 170.6 lbs from my heaviest weight. I need to thank so many people that if I tried, I'd forget someone and then we'd start with the hard feelings. So I'll go with this. Thank you. If you've helped me through this in any way, shape, or form, Thank you.
  16. Today I am 1 week out on a revision after 2 failed lap bands. My journey started in 2008 with my first band placed in March 2009 and slipped December that year. This past April I had another slip and had to have it removed. I had a few more surgeries in between in joint replacements but finally got my by pass last week. I have been dealing with nausea and had to make a trip into ER for IV fluids. All is well so far and I am looking forward to finally making progress on permanent weight loss without all hassle that comes with the band. Thank you so much for your post, it came at just the right time to know that I have made the best decision possible and that I too will be successful. Congratulations on your achievement, that is a wonderful gift.

    My Hair is falling :(

Hi Mozza, yes it's inevitable. Weight loss leads to hair loss in most people, but not all. I had the sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and at about 4 months out I started losing hair by the handfull. I was quite upset but knew it was coming. I just cut my hair shorter so it wasn't as noticeable. Once I started adding more fat to my diet the hair grew back and thickened up. It's just a temporary problem and you will soon be over it. I promise, the weight loss is worth the hair loss. I will be having a revision to bypass in a couple of months and I will go through this again and though I dread it, I know it is a temporary thing and well worth the problem.May I ask why you are having a revision to bypass? I am pre op and still deciding between bypass and sleeve. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App Yes, pls share, audaciousmarie? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

What I wish i knew before I had surgery

I'm sorry you've had such bad GERD. I suffer from it too now which is why I told my surgeon that I wanted the bypass instead of the sleeve. This forum is where I found out about the prevalence of GERD worsening after sleeve. Good luck with your revision!
  20. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and wish I would have known about the high prevalence of damage due to acid reflux after the sleeve. I now need to revise to bypass to stop the damage from getting worse. If you have any history at all of reflux, I'd be talking to your doctor about doing a bypass instead Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I am reaching out to anyone who can share help in getting Gastric Sleeve approved by Humana Medicare after an emergency Lap Band Removal with a low BMI 30. Are there Any Advocates that can help with a denial and now trying to Appeal? This is just not fair. I am sure there are a lot of Lapband removals Out there. Medicare guidelines are not up to the times of all these problems that are going on with failed Lapband and medical issues causing patients. Thanks for any feedback. BTW they told e to reapply when I reached 35... I have 3 of the comorbids and my band was successful too for me for 5 years.
  22. I had Band to Sleeve revision on 12/9/2013. I had my 1 month post-op yesterday and have lost 36.6lbs. Able to move to any foods just slowly and carefully. Surgery Weight: 306 Today: 269.4

    DS vs Sleeve

There is a group for lightweights on facebook. I think the surgery you choose depends on you. I agree with what postop said. I had the sleeve, now I'm going through the process of revision. I need the malabsorption. Some people do great with all surgeries, it's about the regain, or the info years out of how much people keep it off after a certain period of time. Also know the surgeon can tailor your common channel limb to match your age, and weight needed to lose with the DS. I have seen people as light and even lighter than you get the DS. It boils down to what you are willing to do. If you can commit to the Vitamins I think it's a great option. If you don't think you need malabsorption then go for the sleeve. You can't always go with how much other people lose because with all surgeries you can be the high average of losing well, and the lower average of losing, and I was at the bottom. GL, research research research.

    Body temperature

I had lap band surgery 4.5 years ago. I'm hoping to revise to the sleeve. But in the past I was always hot. Probably since I've lost weight, I won't even think about wearing shorts unless it's more than 75 out. I am cold a lot. I still am hot in the summer, but I'm definitely colder than I used to be

    port problem

Did your dr say why this happened? And did your insurance pay for both revisions? I didn't even question my insurance because it all happened so fast. Had the 2nd surgery the day after we tried to do my 3rd fill. jazie
