My hair loss began at about 4 months and lasted till about a year, year and a half. In addition to what the other posters mentioned, with the DS you’re malabsorbing a good deal of protein. Protein helps hair grow but the body uses it in more vital areas first, especially in the first year. Thankfully, mine was most obvious in my hairbrush and shower drain.

not everyone loses that much. In fact, 50% is probably on the high end. I lost hardly any. The only reason I knew I was losing any is I noticed extra strands in my comb (after washing my hair) from about months 6-10. Just looking at my hair - no - I couldn't tell. I know others who lost quite a bit more than I did, but still, they're the only people who noticed.

Shudder, shudder, I’m a bit over 3 months and so far no hair loss...but trust me, every day is suspense “will this be the day that clumps come out?”😳 I’m admittedly a bit terrorized by the thought of losing 50% of my hair🤯! Arabesque, SO happy for YOU that you’re in the new growth phase!

Nothing helps to stop the loss or speed up when your regrow begins. Sorry. The surgery is a shock to your body & speeds up your natural hair loss cycle. You may notice a change in texture too. As @catwoman7 said it is common after a lot of surgeries & pregnancy & can happen after experiencing excessive stress or trauma. All the vitamins & minerals supposedly for hair growth will only help the new hair growth not the hair you have now - it’s all ready dead. Special shampoos & treatments may help the quality of the hair you have (make it smoother or shinier) but they won’t stop it falling out. You just have to go through the process & it will be different for everyone. Mine started at about month 3 & lasted a good 6 months losing close to 50%. I have several inches of regrow now.

Can I ask why you had to reverse a Bypass? I've not heard of that. I'd also love to know what you took that helped your hair regrow. Wishing you the best of luck with your next surgery!
-
I started losing it alarmingly at about four months. So I just got it cut really short--think Carol on the Walking Dead--so now that it is growing back in it's not crazy with a lot of short hairs and long hairs-it's all short!

Thank you. I lost almost half my hair with the last surgery. I bought this hair regrowth stuff that was pretty awesome and helped. So if it gets bad I will try that again. Hopefully it will not be horrible, I have had multiple surgeries but the Gastric Bypass was the only one I had hair loss with so I guess I was fortunate with other surgeries Thank you for the input.

I had the sleeve, so I can't speak to your exact question. But I was googling around about the hair loss issue a few months ago, and found that actually hair loss is common a couple months after lots of surgeries. It's something about the shock to the system. The protein/vitamin deficiencies of WLS surgeries can make it worse, but it's not the main cause. That's why people have hair loss even after a sleeve. So it will probably happen it again if it happened to you before, but it won't necessarily be worse.

Hi there all, I was wondering about the extent of hair loss with the DS procedure as I have had a gastric bypass in the past that had to be reversed and with theBypass I lost a lot of hair although taking biotin and all vitamins. My assumption would be that since this is the surgery that seems to have the highest rate of malabsorption it will be worse.

Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story
Circlesis replied to lady10000000000's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Best wishes to those of you getting ready. On hair loss: you will 99% chance have hairloss from about months 3 to 6 post surgery. The losses will be apparent on your hands, brush, pillow, stylists comb, but not necessarily noticeable on your head. That will depend. Anyway you can’t likely avoid it, so my suggestion is save your money and focus on your program. The hair will surely work its own dang self out. Soon you will be slim and trim! -
Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story

I was low BMI also. I am 5’10 but weighed 265. I fluctuate between 185 and 190 now. Your stomach helps you over rule your brain. I can only share my experience. I also had read about hair loss and decided, in the end, to throw caution to the wind. I can say that I experienced NO hair loss that I could see. The decision to have the sleeve was absolutely the best decision I made in my life. Good luck to you and put your trust in your instincts. -

It’s my first time using this forum not even sure that I’m posting correctly. I scheduled my surgery for next month. I’m also low BMI and I’m freaking out about all the hair loss and excess skinI keep reading about. Did anyone start taking biotin or collagen before the surgery? If so, there are so many options. Which do I buy? -
Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Darktowerdream replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
The last time I was called tiny was when I had my hysterectomy before I regained weight. I never considered myself tiny. Short yes. My face has always been round. I’m not sure how well the Hair style suits me but I like it this way. I took one picture of myself to compare to the only photo I have prior to my gastric bypass surgery which was at the zoo. The most unflattering bent over feeding a flamingo taken by the zoo. It was my birthday and it was nice to be around the birds but I was miserable. I haven’t Had the guts to share them. I don’t consider myself very nice looking. I don’t think about it much. I don’t know how much fun time we can have with many Covid restrictions in place. We will do our best. Tomorrow morning we head off to the airport for a very long day of travel. We have over a 3.5 hour layover in Georgia ... we get to California 7pm which accounts for 3 hour time difference, our bodies will be in 10pm mode ... we get to the airport, cross into Mexico and spend the night in the hotel. Then I think go to Hospital BC the next day. Where I’ll be for the full length of my stay ... Safe travels tomorrow, @Darktowerdream...and will be sending you good vibes Monday! ❤️ Thank you @ms.sss I really need it 🧡 -
Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

Best of luck to you @Darktowerdream!!! Hope you have some fun mom/daughter time too. I love pixie haircuts BTW! Unfortunately, my face is too fat for one. I need big hair to balance my big face! LOL!! You are so tiny, and I bet the cut looks perfect on you! -
Hey, I want to start by saying I completely understand how you feel. I also have long, 3b and 3c curly hair. It was extremely difficult to watch it fall out in excess. My excess shedding started at 2 months and has returned to normal shedding at 6 months. I did notice it. I promise you it will stop eventually. I know that in those moments it doesn't seem like it will. I can assure you that it will. The best thing you can do it take your vitamins. I also recommend doing a deep condition twice a month and a protein treatment twice a month (depending on your hair's porosity). The great thing about curly hair is that you can hide it based on what products you put in your hair and how you style it. For example, use products that are lightweight, use less product in your hair, you can use a pick to get more volume, ect. Let me know if you want more tips I love taking care of my curly hair and I have done a lot of research about it.

How to take regular meds Post Op
Prestonandme replied to Tamwell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Regarding hair, I started taking biotin right after my surgery. Maybe I was lucky, maybe it was the biotin, but I didn't lose any hair. I had another major surgery the year before, and didn't lose any hair that time either. I hope you are lucky, too. -
How to take regular meds Post Op
Suzi_the_Q replied to Tamwell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh- I take non-essentials like collagen, saw palmetto, and hyaluronic acid for skin and hair. Plus flaxseed oil (omega 3,6,9), vitamin C, and D3. But thank you- I'll likely replace my multivitamin with the bariatric pal one when I get my surgery. Currently I take a pre-natal as my multi because it makes my hair amazing. (Yes I know I may lose some hair after surgery). -
I had surgery mid March and just this week I have noticed more hair loss. I had been waiting for it! I have shortish curly hair but my hair texture has always been fine. Will be interesting to see how the next few months plays out. I found this an interesting read even though it isn't specifically about weight loss surgery. https://www.hairguard.com/hair-loss-after-surgery-recovery/

I shave my head. My hair loss was already a done deal years ago. Edit: I'm sure this is not amusing to most of you. -
5 month post op update
Soon2bSleeved12/2019 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing great . I wanted to come here and share an update with you all. I had VSG in December and I’m so glad I did. Best decision ever! As of today I have lost 67 pounds and I’m am officially a healthy BMI! I can’t believe my clothes are a size small and extra small. I used to wear 2x! I am so happy. So much hard work and dedication goes in to this. This is def not the easy way out. A lot of sweat and tears to reach my goal. I workout every day. I purchased a bowflex since the gyms have been closed for a while now. I no longer eat meat, that was a huge change for me. Suddenly my stomach can’t handle meat at all. So I’m a pescatarian now. I still have at least a protein shake a day. My doctor said if I enjoy them I can continue to drink them, so I do. I used to be obsessed with sweets, I no longer like anything sugary. I went through a crazy hair loss for a few weeks. I was getting concerned since it was so much hair loss. Luckily it seems to have subsided. I no longer need my asthma medication daily, I have been on remission from RA and I haven’t had migraines in months! Even my GERD got better 😊. It feels great to see my doctors and have them congratulate me on my progress. There were plenty of times where stalls happened, or I felt I wasn’t losing as fast as other people. That’s when I took a step back and stopped comparing my journey to others; I started enjoying mine. I realized it’s not a race and eating healthy and being active I will surely lose the weight at my own pace. Sending everyone lots of positive thoughts and vibes. I hope you all are healthy and keep pushing. ❤️ -
Losing my hair! Anyone else, and what can help??
PlanetHopper replied to IAmGrace's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is very normal! I have long, very curly hair and it was devastating to watch HUGE amounts of hair fall out. I had excess shedding from 2-5 months post-op. I promise you it will slow down eventually. Some people decide to cut their hair short to decrease the amount of shedding that is seen. The longer your hair is, the more dramatic the hair fall looks. Cutting your hair shorter can also make it appear to have more volume. -

I’ve seen all of mini me in Tennessee’s videos too! Lol. I bought some of the patches and will try them, but honestly I don’t know that I’ll take the risk of them not working. They have great reviews, but I mostly for people saying they like having a patch option, Not necessarily commenting on their effectiveness , like “my blood work is great, I been taking these patches vs oral vitamins”. So I haven’t decided the plan yet. We’ll see what the nutritionist says. Im very concerned about my hair and skin, which I was surprised to hear was a common concern. I have a lot of hair, it’s “the one thing I got”; but I learned that many folk with weight struggles feel like that. I also don’t want to have artificial sweeteners because that can trigger sugar cravings and also make me gag, so the thought of doing that for a long time isn’t awesome for me. I have yet to find unflavored vitamins that aren’t in pill form. -

I have! And I was SO interested. Not a lot of info online about potency but a WLS patient I follow on YOUTUBE Minnie Me In Tennessee tried them. One gave her a rash. The other seemed fine. But in her later videos she was taking oral again so I had to assume she didn't get good results with them. I wish they were great. Again, I've been doing a lot of research. Invested in expensive MaryRuth Organic liquid vitamins. They are drinkable. But they don't agree with my stomach and it's not fun to drink (though it's only a 1oz shot) I don't think I'll re-buy. I have to tell you, with the exception of D my blood work has always been good so I'm hoping that will remain after surgery. I believe my plan is to take a Bariatric Pal multi every morning with breakfast and a Calcium Cit at night with dinner. And hope. I'll add iron drops if my iron is low. I'm prepared with an additional Biotin supplement but they also mess with my stomach. I don't have particularly thick hair tho so I might power thru and start the extra biotin now. What;s your plan?
