Vegetarian/vegan sleevers?
Aribay1 replied to Aribay1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess it depends on your NUT cause my NUT wasn't too happy about me being vegetarian mainly because I'm not a big fish fan. But I'm on puree right now and have been eating tuna and canned chicken so I'll see once I hit stage 3 and 4. -
Vegetarian/vegan sleevers?
alovelynewme replied to Aribay1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been vegetarian for 7 years (although I started eating fish about a year ago). I talked to my NUT about remaining vegetarian after my surgery on January 10th and she said it won't be a problem at all. I think it would be an issue being Vegan and having VSG - I don't know what you would eat to be able to get in your protein - but as a vegetarian it should be okay. Would love to have some sort of group for support after my surgery, though!! -
I never liked red meat except for junk food like cheese-steaks and hamburger. I tried vegetarianism as a teen but went back to eating chicken and seafood in my 20's. Then I developed a seafood allergy. Looking back I think I always had an intolerance, but it became lethal in my late 20/early 30's. When I gave up seafood I went back to vegetarianism. Unfortunately I was more of a junk-a--tarian than anything else. I ate too many white, processed carbs and junk food instead of focusing on whole, healthy plant based foods. About 5 or 6 years ago my allergies got progressively worse. I was feeling worse and worse and gaining weight at a crazy rate. I started reading up and adjusting my diet. I've improved my eating habits and have no desire to ever eat meat again. Seafood is not an option since I am now anaphylaxis levels allergic. There are even days when I think about adopting a vegan diet. For now I am firmly vegetarian and plan to stay that way.

Wow! Our stories are really similar and I can totally relate. I also wish I would of had my surgery sooner. So far, it has been the best decision I have made. I was a vegetarian in my 30's and early 40's but transitioned back into eating meat and fish. Now, since surgery, I no longer eat red meat and will probably go back to vegetarianism once I plateau. One meat at a time! Best of luck!

How does your diet differ?
BLERDgirl replied to athena3127's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am vegetarian, and allergic to ALL seafood, red dyes, processed foods, stevia, and most artificial sugars. 2 weeks prior to surgery I was told to increase my Protein to between 60-80gm and my Water to 64 ounces a day. Day of surgery I was liquids only and NPO after 9pm In the hospital I was offered tea, Liquid Protein, vegetable broth and Jello. I drank the broth & protein. I was released on full liquids. I was told I could add a small amount of Peanut Butter to my protein shakes, but no more than 1 tsp. Weeks 3-6 - I was allowed purees and soft foods. Weeks 7 - present I can eat whatever I can tolerate. I am to each between 600 -800 calories, at least 60 gms protein and 48-64 ounces of water. I've had no issues eating or drinking anything. It took me 4 days to build up to drinking all my protein and water when I was released from the hospital. The biggest challenge is eating around my allergies but that's something I've lived with for a very long time now. It took forever to find a Protein Drink I liked and wasn't allergic to. Other than a rash from the bandages I've had a fairly uneventful surgery and recovery. -
All almond milks are not created equal. I dislike all Silk products. They all have a cloyingly thick taste/feel to them. They taste like wallpaper paste to me. I also don't like soy milk of any kind. I drink Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla or regular flavors. The only other milk I like is Rice Dreams rice milk in either unsweetened vanilla or plain. I'm currently ovo lacto vegetarian so I still eat greek yogurt (Fage 0%) which has been a great source of protein for me, but I hope to go vegan after this year.

Maybe your right but in the same kFC post I said my NUT doesn't think I should be a vegetarian so soon. And also I said although I was a vegetarian I craved meat from time to time

@@Aribay1 - Here is a thread for Buddies & Mentors. It might be a good place to get the support you need. Your post don't feel like you are being honest with yourself, much less the posters replying to them. You made one post implying you were vegetarian, yet you wanted a KFC bowl. You made another talking about the Nature's Box snack boxes. Now you are saying you are 2 weeks in but slipped 2 days. Yet when asked about this you appear to want to down play your actions. Check out that thread and see if you can connect with someone. I wish you well.

I make a lot of bean based soups because I'm vegetarian. I also made a really tasty, but not so pretty dreamed spinach soup. I used veg stock (either my own or low sodium Amy's), a container or premade Orgain organic protein drink (vanilla flavor). I pureed a can of low sodium whit beans with 2 cups of spinach and some roasted garlic. Mix it all together, salt & pepper to taste, a dash of cumin. If you want I you could add some chicken, but I don't eat chicken I added some shredded blanched spinach for garnish.

How were you vegetarian eating KFC bowls? Vegan would be challenging, but vegetarian isn't. Especially if you are ovo-lacto vegetarian. I am considering going vegan once I am a year out. I've been thinking about it for a while and if things go well I'm fairly certain I will.

Were you a veg before surgery? It's challenging but not impossible. I've dealt with so many anti vegetarian nutritionist it annoys me to no end. One of the reasons I went with the hospital instead of the other hospital I looked at was because the nutritionist was so rude and condescending toward vegetarians.

I'm between being a vegetarian right now because my NUT is strongly against me being one so early in my journey. So I've been having the weirdest cravings. I haven't had beef for a couple months now and all I was is a big fat juice beefy burger. So it's more like in my head.

Hum ok well I'm out of ideas. I was going to ask you what you were eating but you said in a post before you were a vegetarian But you want to eat a chicken bowl. I wouldn't even know what food to suggest. Good luck you will figure it out.

You'll be fine. This is why it's called a lifestyle change. You have to change and relearn so much of how you previously lived. I think I had a jump on some things because I'm a vegetarian with multiple food allergies. I often ate differently than my friends and family. Processed foods also triggered my allergies. After one bad allergic reaction that caused anaphylaxis and caused the ER doctor's to put me into a medically induced coma, I realized I had to take things seriously. Instead of thinking about what you can't have, think about what you can have. Even better think of the things that a thinner you will be able to do. Those fast foods and take out you love? Start doing research on how you can remake those things only healthier. Missing zumba? Do it at home. Check your cable provider for On Demand work outs. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Milaxx on MFP *really* looking for vegetarian friends BTW - if you send a friend request please include a note letting me know you are from here. -
I'm 7 weeks out as well. I do what I did pre-surgery. In the car I keep larabars, and either almond/cashews or pistachios. I always carry a bottle of Water. Processed food doesn't always sit well with me because I have multiple food allergies & I'm vegetarian. If I am pushed I will get a egg crossaint at Dunkin Donuts. I toss the bread and eat the egg. My other option is a veggie burger from Burger King no ketchup/mayo and again I toss the bun. At the support group one woman says she had a small mini cooler she keeps in her car. I think I may adopt this practice as well. This way I can carry more safe foods with me and not run the risk of being tempted by fast food .

I'm vegetarian. I've been adding a bit of spinach to whatever I eat each day . I ate a salad a day before my surgery and drank plenty of Water. I never ate processed food. I was super regular. Going 2 -3 times a day or more. I was discharged on a 30 day supply of stool softeners. I've been going each day but it's not as robust as it once was. I figure part of it is I'm eating so much less. Once I started adding back in my leafy greens, my once a day felt more robust.

I'm also a vegetarian. I've always made my own smoothies. I miss my veggies, I've been adding spinach into my purees since I hit the soft foods stage and I will occasionally add a bit of spinach to my smoothies if I'm using the powder and making my own from scratch. Since many green leafy veg also have Protein, I don't have an issue with it. I'm still losing so I don't see anything wrong with it.

I was a vegetarian for about 15 years but introduced meat back in my diet about 2 years ago. I found that being a vegetarian I was only getting about 10-20 grams of Protein a day. I started out on the shakes and powders but gradually got off of those for no reason at all. This was the reason for my lack of protein. I was pretty lazy in that department. Some other foods that are good TVP (textured vegetable protein) edemame Eggbeaters refried Beans tofu soy These are just some of the things I ate early on when I became vegetarian. I found, later on, that my food choices were not the best and changed my diet. Best of luck!!

Hello! Anyone use Dr. Noel Williams from Penn in Philly?
BLERDgirl replied to anikitia's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Excellent all the way around. I love that they have support group meetings several times a week in different locations/times/places. I felt really cared for by the medical team. I have a laundry list of allergies,I'm a vegetarian and I don't accept blood transfusions. I explained all of this to the team up front and asked if this would be a problem or interfere with me have bariatric surgery. I was assured that it wasn't and te staff never pushed the issue. My surgery went as smooth as it could. The only issue I had was they couldn't fine a vein for my IV the day of surgery. They ended up having to go in my neck. It was a little scary because they had to tilt the bed back, but the staff was very comforting and reassuring under the circumstances. Other than that, my surgery was a breeze! I was walking in recovery. I had no pain and never needed to use the morphine pump or take pain meds. I had a private room on the floor and my nurse was great! When they found out I lived alone they made arrangements for a visiting nurse to come check on my upon discharge. I choose Dr. Williams because he had done GBP on a friend of mine and she said he was good. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone in the Philly area considering this surgery. -
I try to bundle but I guess I'm starting off early but I'm always cold! Always always. I'm a vegetarian so it's that much harder for me.

I follow a primarily vegetarian diet and limit the milk products. I am four weeks out from RNY bypass and have not had any issues.
