  1. On Monday I had my lap band removed, my hiatal hernia repaired and gastric bypass done. One night in the hospital and back home at 7:45 the next evening. Not a ton of pain but managing with gabapentin and Tylenol with oxycodone available. Right after, I felt I had eaten 3 Thanksgiving dinners, that is slowly going away. I’ve stuck to water and decaf iced tea with one Muscle Milk shake. I’ll do more shakes but preferably not those horrid BA meal replacement shakes. Staff at Fair Oaks Hospital were the most awesome group of people I’ve been with and I’m very grateful for them and my doctors. Now I need to learn how to properly feed my new postage-stamp-sized stomach. Thanks for reading!

    Mental & Behavioral Change

I'm sorry to read about your cancer diagnosis. And steroids suck! I was on them for 7 years, so I'm well versed in how they're both helpful, yet evil at the same time. I'm pre-op for bypass. I had my lap band removed about a year ago, so I can't advise you on anything about bypass post op. Hopefully some of the bypass veterans will comment. Best wishes on your revision!
  3. I was sleeved 9 yrs ago & lost about 90 pounds, but was not able to get to my goal I exercised diligently, ate right, & kept active. I gained back about 20% per the statistics. However, colon cancer came knocking & with chemo, inactivity & 7 mos of steroids, I gained all my weight back. I am scheduled for revision to bypass on April 14th. I know the surgery is a tool which will allow me to lose a lot of weight quickly, but after the honeymoon phase, I am wondering what tools/skills I have to change my behavioral & mental habits to make lifelong change & success. Looking for advice from others who have has long time success.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hey April Surgery Buddies. Is anyone having a revision from Sleeve to Gastric Bypass and is around the age of 67? How are you dealing with this 2nd surgery?

    food addict I'm not sure

I came to the conclusion that I am a food addict after reading several books These books also tell one how to deal with the addiction. Boiled down to the basics: one must avoid trigger foods just as an alcoholic must abstain from alcohol. The usual trigger foods are are sugar, flour. white potatoes, rice, and processed food. "Processed food" is anything in a bag or box in the center aisles of the supermarket. Shop the exterior aisles where one finds fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, and frozen vegetables. There is a withdrawal period that is uncomfortable, but after a couple of weeks the cravings for the trigger foods diminish. Unless one of the trigger foods is sitting right In front of me, I no longer have difficulty avoiding them. I have lost 93 lbs by cutting out these things, 70 lbs prior to RNy revision surgery and another 23 lbs to date post surgery, I recommend these books Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction by Vera Tarman Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Treat Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton Why Diets Fail (Because you're Addicted to Sugar) by Nicole Avena & John Talbott
  6. The belly button is new. I naturally have a high belly button and with the existing tattoo (what remains is the half that was above my "old" belly button), we (me and PS) decided to be "conservative" and go with a higher placed scar with scar revision(s) planned in the future. I didn't have enough skin to remove the tattoo completely so it was more important to me that the remaining portion not be totally distorted. My bikini wearing days are long gone so hiding the scar was not as important. It will be easy to remove more of the tattoo without distorting it and lower the scar an inch at a time. The scar revision is an office procedure done under local anesthesia so not a huge deal.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had my revision to bypass 3 weeks ago. I've been cleared to eat soft foods but can eat only very small amounts at a time and things like ground beef and tuna are not agreeing with me at all. I did discover last night that about 2 oz of deli meat agrees with me as long as I don't try to eat or drink anything else for about an hour after. My favorite thing so far has been refried beans with taco sauce and a bit of melted shredded cheese. I'm getting most of my protein from drinking Fairlife skim milk. I'm down almost 14 pounds which blows my mind because it took me almost 2 months to lose that when I had my sleeve 7 years ago. I didn't do this for weight loss but it's been a welcomed bonus. No more heart burn or reflux either. Sent from my Z5157V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

The closest connection I have is a father who was stationed in South Korea in the 80’s. He did bring home a love of kimchi though. I get loads of strange looks when I walk into Asian or Hispanic grocery stores which I find hilarious. When I was about 4-5 months post VSG I was able to eat a few pieces of sushi but that was pretty much my extent then. After my revision I think it was about month 4. It wasn’t ever very much at first maybe a couple of tablespoons. I’ve since learned that rice is a slider food for me so I try to limit it to a half cup or less but I know it’s different for everyone.
  9. Just the lateral one unless you have a ton of skin above your belly button. I had muscle repair with my tummy tuck. I'm still quite swollen in the picture. My scar is high (planned) and I will be having scar revision to lower it.

    Food Before and After Photos

I’m 2.5 years from VSG and 19 months out from VSG to RNY revision from hernia and GERD. I can’t eat a whole bunch about 1/3-1/2 cup at a time as I find it more filling than actual rice.
  11. Just reading up and I’m pending revision surgery for GERD and hiatal hernia. How are you doing now. Praying things have improved for you.
  12. How are y’all doing that have had the revision surgery from sleeve to RNY? I just learned I’ll be having the same soon due to GERD, esophagitis and hiatal hernia. my sleeve was in 2012 and I lost and kept off 85 pounds. Are y’all losing additional weight? I really just want pain relief but will gladly accept additional weight loss!

Wth!?!? That's crazy! I'm pretty much done and ready for my case to go before review with the team. After that's approved, I'll see the surgeon and get my surgery date. My first visit for the revision was about a month ago, lol.

    Mad at myself

I did the same thing after my sleeve except that I never really allowed it to work at all. I lost my mom, my father, and my dad within 16 months and my husband was being treated for cancer plus my brother and his family stopped speaking to me. I was horribly depressed and really was hoping to die so I wouldn’t have to cope anymore. I went to grief therapy, then a therapist. Now I’m on an even keel again and was just revised to a bypass on the 8th. Don’t beat yourself up, sometimes we simply have too much to deal with and we tend to be hardest on ourselves. If you were talking to a friend, you wouldn’t beat them up. Just try to take things one day at a time and do the best you can. That’s really all any of us can do. I highly recommend grief therapy if it’s available. Our local hospice group offered it for free and so do some churches. There’s a really good speaker, Dr. Alan Wofelt if you look him up. Maybe he will be in a town near you. Listening to others dealing with grief at different stages helped me feel less alone although I still miss my folks every day. My best lifelong friend died in December and I was able to not go back off the deep end. Be kind to yourself.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I was supposed to have a revision from RNY to distal RNY yesterday but, things didn't go exactly as planned with me yesterday. When do they ever? Surgery was only supposed to be an hour ended up being over 3 hours. Doctor found a lot of adhesions that he had to clear up before he could see exactly what was going on. My previous surgeon from 20 years ago did an older version of the surgery which included a loop that my current surgeon wasn't expecting and made my new surgery more dangerous so he had to fix a hernia that was there and basically had to abort the surgery were planning on doing. Which means I'm going to need a different surgery once I heal up from this one. I am doing okay now of course I'm in some pain I had abdominal surgery yesterday regardless of the changes to our plans.
  16. Less than 12 hrs now and I will be having my revision to distal bypass. I can't believe it's finally here, but I am so ready!

    Self pay questions

I am 13 days post op - I did self pay and was a gastric bypass revision. 15k here with an excellent surgeon (worked with him at hospital). So happy with how quickly things went this time.

    really struggling

One of the problems people face after surgery, especially early on, is the feeling that you have to deny yourself certain things that you've always enjoyed, when that isn't entirely true. If there was a favorite food you had, you can still have it - just a much smaller portion. Or look for an alternative like the previous poster described. I've loved pizza my whole life. My wife and I would order a large pie and I'd eat half of it. I haven't tried pizza since my revision surgery, but after I was sleeved after a few months I would occasionally have ONE slice of pizza which would fill me up and make me feel like I wasn't depriving myself. Sometimes I'd make cauliflower crust pizza which was pretty good once I got the hang of it. They now sell premade cauliflower crust pizza which can be very tasty if you get the right brand. One of my absolute favorite meals that I made after my sleeve was the Eggface Ricotta Bake, it's super easy to prepare and tastes like lasagna. https://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1793517 In fact I think I inspired myself, I'm going to make it this weekend!

    Atlanta,ga?

Dr. Hart performed my sleeve in 2017. Yes, he’s quiet but if you go in with a list of questions, he will respond. I live in Cleveland, Ohio now. Im having a revision at the Cleveland Clinic to bypass on April 26th. I lost 65 pounds with sleeve. Never regained but stopped losing. Also developed GERD. So bypass is the next step. Good luck with your journey. I miss ATL!!!

    This is all overwhelming

Coop, this is a safe space! We're all in the same boat as you or were where you are now. Sure it's easier for some than others, but you can do this. We're here for you! We will help you as much as we can. That's what this community is all about, supporting each other. Sure eating after weight loss surgery is an adjustment, but you adjust. A lot of people say that your taste changes after surgery and you don't even enjoy the foods that you used to. As the weight starts coming off, and your clothes fit better, you realize that you've broke free from the grip that food had on you. I actually miss the restriction that my Lap Band gave me. I'm currently waiting for revision surgery. I had a Lap Band for about 8 years and had it removed last year and now almost ready to get a surgery date for gastric bypass. Best wishes to you Coop! You got this! 💪
  23. in most cases, gastric bypass improves if not outright cures GERD. Mine went completely away for 2-3 years. I do have issues occasionally now, but it's really minor reflux rather than GERD. Nothing a couple of Tums can't deal with (as well as not eating things that might set it off). And it's just occasionally - not every day like it was before surgery (and certainly much milder). P.S. I had gastric bypass almost seven years ago. Not a revision. I chose bypass over sleeve because I had GERD.
  24. I'm in the process of revising from Band to Bypass due to GERD. Good Lord, I hope I don't get GERD again after the Bypass. That's supposed to cure it. My sister in law has LPR, but she's not a wls patient. Her father had it and it led to his esophageal cancer. So this sort of thing terrifies me.
  25. Hi All, Does anyone here have GERD and/or LPR (Silent Reflux) after gastric bypass surgery? If so, can you please advise: 1. How long ago you had the gastric bypass surgery (and if you had revision from sleeve to bypass)? 2. When your symptoms of GERD and/or LPR started? 3. If you have managed to treat it? I have LPR and am struggling. So other people's experiences would be appreciated. Thanks all.
