    Protein Recommendations

I weaned off shakes altogether beginning week 3, so hang in there, you won't have to deal with them forever. I also added unflavored Protein to foods/drinks to up protein intake without using shakes. (I like it in diet lemonade and bouillon.) I ordered GENEPRO from Amazon.com. One teaspoon adds 10 grams protein. Good luck!

+1 for GENEPRO Sent from my LG-D850 using the BariatricPal App

    Complications

That sucks but I understand completely. If I didn't try to hide unflavored protein powder (Genepro, little scope is 30 g protein) then I wouldn't reach even my meager amount. I'm instructed for 60-70g a day. And not getting the protein stunts weightloss but when i try to drink something with protwin my throat gets tight and i get nausea and acid reflux. It's been rough and hoping to all hell i get bettter by 7 weeks. It is keeping me from working or leaving the house. Just sucks

    Protein shakes

Get a bunch of samples and try them. Try powders, pre-made and protein waters/drinks. A few popular brands are premiere protein, genepro, isopure, syntrax, unjury to name just a few. There are soy isolates, whey isolates and plant based formulas. Most nutritionist recommend whey isolate. Concentrates are not as potent. Unflavored powders can often be mixed into warm things like soups, broths, and teas. I did not have a pre-op diet, but I was on full liquids for the first 2 weeks post-op. By week one I was tired of the same drink so I began experimenting. If I hadn't figured out a way to add variety I would have gone nuts. Word of advice; buy only enough to last the first week or two post-op. Some people's palate's change after surgery. Some people become lactose intolerant. Save your receipts in the event you need to return something because these drinks can get pricey.
  6. They are saying their 10g of special protein is equivalent to 30g whey. I believe this says it best about Genepro: Long story short, they are selling lies. Most likely they are selling BCAA's and calling it protein. Do yourself a favor and buy a reputable protein brand. Gold Standard is good brand. There are so many manufacturers that lie on their labels, you almost have to look them up and see how many lawsuits they have against them before you buy! If their process was true, every other maker out there would be following suit because it is such a cutthroat business. The fact that most retail chains refuse to carry it is evidence of the company's reputation. Not going to get into a debate about chemistry. I do that enough at work, but the weight argument is actually moot. There are scientific and clinical studies that have shown that when whey protein isolate is consumed along with ProHydrolase, amino acid concentrations in the blood increase by 20%, compared to consuming whey protein alone. I believe Genepro mention this on their product page and about the bio-availability is comparable to 30g of protein. There are several protein products that are involved in class actions, and Genepro, despite all of its competitors complaining about them hasn't been sued for product misrepresentation so until then, I'll continue buying the product because my labs suggest that I am getting my protein (Albumin/Globulin/Total protein blood test). Just my two cents.
  7. The first week after surgery I was restricted to Clear Liquids only. They weren't concerned about me getting much Protein during that week. I can't stand Protein shakes so I relied heavily on GENEPRO mixed into my foods.
  8. I can barely get in my meals and fluids, am I supposed to be able to get in Snacks as well? I have my post op appointment next week and I am afraid I'm doing this wrong. I am on puréed food Typical day Premier Protein shake for Breakfast Cottage cheese mixed with GENEPRO Protein powder for lunch Homemade hummus for dinner And Water in between about 1.5 litres Am I eating enough? Protein intake

Get some GENEPRO. You can mix it with anything. I mix it with my hummus, yogurt, cottage cheese, I even mixed it into the infamous Ricotta Bake. We need to be creative in the begging soft food stage. It is very hard getting Protein in. Thankfully I have no issues with shakes. But I find the timeframe very difficult getting in protein and fluids in a 12 hour awake day.

Genepro Protein Powder- yeah or nay?

There's a thread about Genepro here already that is probably worth reading: The money quote is this: "[They] claim that 1 tablespoon of their product contains 30 grams of Protein when the tablespoon itself only holds 15 grams."

    Timing Protein

My NUT approved me to drink it at one time and then have other protein throughout the day. I am six months out. No problems and my blood work came back excellent. No deficiencies in protein. I use a scoop of Genepro and a scoop of Unjury in 8 ounces of water and its 58 grams of protein. I still eat protein at other meals. No junk. And less than 40 carbs a day. I usually get in about 500-800 calories a day. I think everybody has different rules. ????
  12. Genepro... Put it in v-8 juice every morning!!!
  13. I really enjoy Genepro, it mixes in to everything so nice with barely any taste. It's worth the money!

    Help

Do you like mashed potatoes? I love 'em. As long as you get it without chunks and it's smooth, that's close enough to puree. Mixes nice with flavorless Protein like GENEPRO, too. Throw some cooked chicken in the food processor with a little bit of chicken stock, and add some seasonings. I know a guy who did a touch of fat-free ranch and some buffalo wing sauce, and had it that way lol... You just kind of have to get a little creative. You can also grab some Hormel chili and throw that in the food processor, blend it until it's basically a paste. If you have a food processor, you can more or less puree anything. It's not going to be like eating solid food, but you don't have to do it forever.

Help with water intake and protein

I suggest finding a high protein powder. I am preop but was having a hard time getting the 64oz liquid plus the protein drinks down. I found genepro medical grade protein and add it to my shakes, jello and sometimes other bevetages to boost my protein. Its 30g per tbs and has very little of the "ugh thats protein powder" flavor. Its does have a protein powder smell, but not bad according to my husband.
  16. GENEPRO. Can't even taste it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Genepro... I buy from Amazon... It says it's 30 grams of protein per scoop but I only count it as 15 grams and you can put it in almost anything...
  18. Of those of you who use Genepro, are you still using it and do you still like it? I am having trouble getting my protein in and need to find a way to add it to my liquids or meals.
  19. I did try genepro based off of this site. I am on the opposite side. I can taste it and feel it gets clumpy. Def didn't work for me but does have a ton of protein
  20. At 6 months out since Gastric Bypass, I started my hair loss at the start of December. Currently taking just for hair loss- Collagen, biotin, iron. After talking with my doctor last Tuesday, she told me my iron intake needed to be increased to 50mg up to 100mg per day.and to watch for constipation. We also spoke about meals, currently at about 65-85 grams of protein per day. I add protein to practically every thing I eat. I use Genepro, it can be added to tea and coffee as well as hot and cold foods. It is flavorless and has helped tremendously keeping my protein Intake up. I buy mine on the bariatric pal store. I am due to get some labs this week so I am curious about my vitamin and mineral numbers. Also, I have been discouraged due to the hair loss and the slow down of weight loss. However the doctor told me it is very normal at this stage to slow down losing. That was incredibly reassuring☺️ TLDR;Key takeaways- more protein, more water and check your iron intake. Good luck. ❤️

    A new healthier Me!

Try the clear protein drinks if you can. Good one is Premier Protein Clear, have also done protein 2 0 and even Ensure has a clear ones a little less protein but passable. Also try cutting your shakes half-strength with skim milk, sure it make take longer, but we all use these tricks if necessary. Sir protein powder in your protein fluids, add it where you can. For a shor5 while I even drank skim milk with a scoo0 of Genepro in it.And you wIll make it through.
  22. Thanks ! Have you tried Genepro protein powder?
  23. GENEPRO...totally tasteless!! Really and truly!! If I could, I'd buy stock in it, I have told so many people about it. Buy it off Amazon.com.
