    4 months out and FRUSTRATED!!!!!!

I am a sleeve, not a bypass--but my surgical uses the same post-op diet plan for both procedures, with only minor differences in terms of supplementation. It's really hard to look at one person's macro and diet and use that as a basis to determine what's best for you. We all have our own issues and challenges to deal with. We also all have issues with stalls, although I agree that a month and a half is on the long side. The fact is, however, you started off at 311 when you had surgery in late August 2018 and you're now down to 235 as of today. Since you've been stalled for one and half months, that means you lost 75 pounds in a 4 month period. That's a LOT of weight in a very short period of time. Shorter than I think is common. Maybe a long stall isn't entirely unusual in these circumstances. That said, if you're eating less than 600 calories a day 5 months out of surgery, that seems really low. I am just finishing up my soft/puree phase and I am consuming between 700 and 900 calories per day. I expect that to go up to 1200 calories or so per day over the course of this year--maybe even 1500. I have been essentially following my doctor's guidelines, which means eating three meals per day that cause me to consume at least 70g of protein per day. I am also drinking more than 64oz of fluid per day, which maybe one of the most critical ingredients to weight loss. While my post-diet (at least for this phase of my recovery) doesn't limit me in terms of macronutrients (provided I hit my protein goals), I have chosen to limit myself to 20g or less of net carbs (which does not count fiber or sugar alcohols consumed). I have also chosen to eat only foods that have good quality sources of fat--like avocado, fish (and fish oils) etc. As a result, I have put myself in a state of ketosis, which seems be really helping me make the most out of my sleeve (at least for now). I would NOT say that I am following a Keto diet, since more than 50% of my food intake is coming from protein and maybe 35-40% is coming from fat, with less than 10% coming from carbs (it varies day to day, but carbs are always under 20g). I am also trying to exercise daily--not just take a walk, but really work up a good sweat and get my heart rate of to 80% max. I am not suggesting you do what I am doing--everyone needs to find their own best path--but if you're in a prolonged stall it's best to change things up. If I were in your shows, I would try hard to get in more protein and fats (to the extent you can tolerate them) and get your calories up closer to a 800 a day. I get that you might not be able to eat the fat at this point depending your sensitivity to dumping, but you can't continue doing the same thing that isn't working for you at the moment. You need to change a couple of things up to restart your weight loss engine. If that means drinking an extra protein shake or getting in an extra little meal to reach a new calorie/protein goal, then do it. See how it goes for a couple of weeks. Also, if your nutritionist isn't helpful, is there another bariatric nutritionist you could speak to???

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

Day 12 - how I eat now? I eat less then 3.5 oz a meal, no matter what it is or how good it tastes. Not just because I don't want to stretch my tummy, but mostly because I can't. No onions, no gassy greens, no gassy foods in general. No soda, and now that adult advent is over, no alcohol. I can't stomach sugar at all these days. With also being diagnosed with CD, no breads, and my carbs are super low. Just a lot of protein, cheese, meats, and propel. Somedays it's hard and frustrating, especially when a meal is really freaking good, but I just turn it inti multiple meals and have to wait. I love this tool and am grateful for all these changes! 3. I had the sleeve 12/20, am down almost 30lbs. Best thing I ever did - I like the fact that my basic digestion hasn’t changed - my appetite is gone and I i am sticking to the program . I also am adamant I will never have the sugar and carbs and even alcohol the way I used to - you have to commit to a new lifestyle . Focus on intake and expenditure - ensure u get sufficient exercise . I have heard multiple bad stories about the band and many people get it taken out and replace it with the sleeve. Good luck !

    Addiction after weight loss surgery!

I know this is an old topic but I'm going through the same thing right now. I've lost 92 pounds, broke up with my boyfriend (who was my ex-husband) and now I'm addicted to the online sites and meeting new people and having sex. I'm not really using many drugs or alcohol but I do smoke weed probably twice a week and have a few drinks twice a week. Once I'm the slightest bit buzzed (which doesn't take a lot now), I have no inhibitions and it's scary. I've put myself in a few dangerous situations. I did go see a therapist last week and told her everything. Just wanted to talk to others who have experienced this. Never in a million years didn't I think this would happen to me.
  5. Just a few hours ago I was at my therapy session, it’s a crucial aspect for me in this journey to deal with my love of food and alcohol. Anywho, as we were talking I had my leg crossed without realizing it and when I noticed I told her, “well damn, look at that I haven’t been able to do this in years” it was a great moment 😁
  6. Definitely. But if you hold yourself to a "perfect" standard, you're bound to fail sometimes. We all need to practice getting back on the wagon after a misstep. I know I am prone to the "I already blew it for today, so what the hell" attitude. And then one day turns into the rest of the week, rest of the month, etc. That's what I love about these forums, we understand each other. Remember, alcoholics don't "need" alcohol, but we all need to eat.
  7. Thank you, I needed to hear that. I felt really badly, not because a few bites of pizza are so terrible but because it is like an alcoholic just taking a sip, you know?

    GASTRIC SLEEVE and HERBAL LIFE

I feel like you are in a really good place right now because you've gotten past a really first important step - you know an issue that could be causing your weight gain! A glass a wine is not going to untie everything you've done, but if you're like me - some things are not acceptable in moderation and should just stay away from. You still are reaping the benefits of the decision you made, you still look really good! So, do what you can and manage the alcohol consumption. If you're still having issues, that can be dealt with too!

    GASTRIC SLEEVE and HERBAL LIFE

Herbalife is far from a proper diet. They over-charge you on shakes and supplements that you could easily supply yourself from the grocery store for a fraction of the cost. If you're struggling with alcohol consumption, then I feel that is something you should tackle versus going onto a fad diet. Talk with your doctor, or your team from when you first had the surgery! Alcohol dependency is a very real thing post-wls surgery! Like I mentioned, focus on lessening your alcohol consumption and then the next step (if you don't see any weight loss, which I highly doubt) can be your diet and exercise.

    GASTRIC SLEEVE and HERBAL LIFE

No need to tell me about the “history of herbal life “ I do not care about that all I care about is the proper diet to lose it. From the 5 side effects of gastric sleeve surgery I’ve really been struggling with one and that’s the alcohol consumption it’s been really bad for me and I know I need to stop but it’s been so hard to do so and that’s what has me gaining weight
  11. So I have one week to go until my revision from Band to RNY. I have been toldnot to do a preop diet but just to stick to clean eating!! I am extremely happy about that and could have kissed the NUT when she told me that as I remember how awful the preop was before my band. But do you know how confusing clean eating is? Yes I know I need to steer away from processed foods and added sugars but apart from that there are so many different variations. I haven’t been told no carbs but I am trying to keep those to a minimum ( except veg). I’ve also given up alcohol. Hopefully that is enough!
  12. So I am officially 5 weeks post-op today. This past weekend my wife and I moved into a larger place where our kids could all have their own bedrooms. I was somewhat frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t really help moving a lot of things and had to rely on the movers, family, and friends to do much more than I could. By the second day of moving I had reached my end. The 600 calories I’m taking in with the post-op soft foods diet just gave me no energy to do much of anything. That night I had a bit of a break down. Like most of us I’ve had varying success of losing the same 20, 40, or 80 pounds over and over again. With every successful diet attempt I’ve tried in the past I’ve allowed myself “cheat days” where I could enjoy bingeing on what I had deprived myself of all week. While this journey has been somewhat easier in the sense that the weight comes off more easily, and the hunger pains are relatively non-exitant...in some ways its so much harder, because there are no days off. I mentioned to my wife, that I feel at a bit of a loss. Before my surgery I would turn to food, or alcohol, or an occasional smoke to relieve the stress. But now, I don’t have any of those things available to me. I know it’s for the betterment of my health, and that my decision to have the surgery was in large part because I knew that I had to make drastic changes to the way I consume everything in my life. More than that...as strange as it seems, I loved food. It was a great friend to me that always made me feel better. And ever since the surgery, it’s weird to say, but I kind of hate eating. I hate how it makes me feel, I hate the process of chewing so much, but even worse...I hate that I hate it. Because now it’s like this friend that I had as a physical and emotional crutch is just, gone. To end this on a positive note, I only weigh myself once a week on Monday mornings. This morning I saw that I lost 9 pounds over the last week. (Moving was certainly the most excercise I’ve done since surgery!) I’m down 62 pounds since I first walked into the Bariatric center eight months ago, and over 40 pounds since my surgery. I know this is going to get better, and I’m happy with the choice I made. But I know that not everyday is easy. I read that a lot of people seem to hit this same buyers remorse feeling about a month out, so it helps knowing that I’m not alone. Here’s to the better days. Hang in there...it will be worth it.
  13. Hi All, Newbie here😀. Wanna share my journey in getting sleeved & how its turning out so far. Am 40 Yrs old. Gained weight in last 2 years (from 320 lbs to 427lbs) due to severe depression & alcohol abuse. Suffering from Anxiety & panic attacks. So with courage from my wife & family went & sought help in June 2018. Quit Drinking in Sep. Have been sober since. Was smoking till Dec 28th 2018. Not much. May be 5-6 V light slim cigarettes a day. Have had hypertension for last 10 yrs. No Sugar. No diabetes. No Cholesterol issues as well. Got admitted on 29th Dec. Had my Laparoscopic Sleeve done on the 30th of Dec. Got discharged from Hospital on the 1st of Jan 2019. It was a wonderful homecoming. Have been recommended a liquid diet by the team for 3 months. I asked the team if i could swim as even prior to getting sleeved i used to swim 2 times daily. Surprisingly they okeyed me to swim and did water proof dressings for the stitches which we replace after disinfecting every day after i swim. Its been a week today since the surgery. I have been swimming for 3 days regularly now. I feel soooooo different. Sorry for the long first post. More to follow. Glad to be a part off this great community.

    Recreational Drugs

If the OPs intent was to find out about drugs affecting the sleeve, I would say the two biggest to worry about would be weed and alcohol. Once your stomach is reduced in size, I have heard the alcohol hits you way faster and way harder. Weed would of course make you get the munchies which could lead to overeating and making yourself sick or stretching your sleeve. I can’t see any other drugs really causing a problem. Then again, anything you have to swallow could be a problem benzodiazepines and opiodes things of that nature. Here’s an idea, don’t do drugs and you will be fine. If you drink, limit it to 1 or 2 drinks and stop. There, I have solved this problem for everyone.

    Recreational Drugs

Such a great comparison. Last year, a crackhead broke into my house and went through me and my families things looking for valuables to pawn to support his drug addiction. I don't think my unhealthy relationship with food compares to the actions of a drug addict. And yes, if the OP without even thinking about it does a line of coke and chases it with alcohol before thinking it might have an effect on their recent major abdominal sirgery, they're an addict not an occasional user. Thanks for minimizing that.

    Recreational Drugs

No worries mate. I am very open about my alcoholism and drug addiction. I forgot to mention I do work a program of recovery and hit one AA meeting a week. I also suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and OCD, I find its better to be open about these things as maybe my experiences can help others.

Coke is like this, you will feel fantastic for like an hour and then you have to do more, I was starting to use coke in addition to my drinking when I finally hit bottom and got sober. I am an alcoholic to the core, so I simply have to abstain from drinking. Having said that, I am an addict too and cannot use any form of drug or I will abuse it even something as simple as Benadryl. I will abuse anything that makes me feel good, hence my food addiction. I am a food addict and that is what led me to getting up to 440 pounds. Food was the only thing I had left to abuse. I was 9 years sober when I got sleeved and 3 months after getting sleeved I relapsed and almost died. Like literally almost died, my wife had to call 911 and I had to be taken to the ER. Why did this happen? I didn’t protect my sobriety and once I couldn’t abuse food anymore my alcoholism and drug addiction came back with a vengeance. I am sober today by the grace of God and very fortunate I did not die the night I relapsed.

Frankly I'm not sure what's worse for your body, overeating consistently as many of us have done for YEARS or having an occasional line of coke. What I'm trying to say is: as someone who's abused a substance (food) yourself, who are you to judge? Just because the government, which varies from country to country on this international forum, decides something is illegal doesn't mean it's any less/more harmful. Alcohol was illegal once in the US too, and aspirin would be illegal today for being too powerful if it weren't grandfathered in.

    Recreational Drugs

I have no experience with drugs, but I have plenty with research... so just a few words of advice 😆 If you have an addictive personality, it is very easy to transfer your addiction from food to alcohol (most common), but drugs, shopping, and other addictions as well. This is an incredibly difficult journey you're about to go through. Give yourself your best chances and stay away from the other vices - as you've discovered, it is MUCH easier to get drunk quicker, forget your precautions, and end up like you have now in a place that isn't fun. Plus alcohol dehydrates you. Have some water on the rocks instead 🥂

    Alcohol

My Dr, adviser, and nutritionist warned that Carbonation is absolutely off limits for the rest of your life. The consequences can be really bad. Expanding your stomach, eating bad, etc. I would say stay away from it. Ps: Dr said no alcohol for rest of your life but I know that people here say it’s ok....

Dang, there's a lot of negativity on this post. She made a mistake. She realizes that she made a mistake. We've all made mistakes whether it's with drugs, alcohol, food, in life...whatever. Let's all remember what Thumper taught us all those years ago: "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all".
