diahrrea after surgery?????
lsereno replied to ScentsyLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd call the Dr. or nutritionist - you might be lactose intolerant following surgery. I am. There are varying levels. I can tolerate whey Protein, yogurt, and hard cheeses, but not milk or cottage cheese. I switched to soy milk in my Protein drinks and felt better. I still had diarrhea the first couple of weeks, but I had less gas and I went poo less often. Lynda -
I am a honey fanatic... I buy jars from every place I visit. First, post sleeve I was super sensitive to tastes so 1tsp of honey in my big mug of tea was super sweet. It sweetens better than regular sugar and it's natural (buy local!) Second, honey has natural antibiotic properties (you can safely use it on burns and cuts). It goes great with FF Greek yogurt and little goes long way. I think you are thinking of botulism toxin that can affect people, it's spores can be found in honey and only affect children under 12month. Adults have enough intestinal flora to not get sick in the off chance the we inject the spores (which exist in the air, as well as poorly preserved food). It's still a sugar but better than fake stuff or white sugar. So yes go honey go!

-- I'm about 24 days out and lightheaded/warm headed feelings have been my greatest complaint since day 6 ... Was hospitalized for dehydration on day 11 but still struggling with those symptoms and constant fatigue and overall weakness --- I think my challenge with getting in fluids is due to my hernia repair pain which carafate Rx has helped with a bit but still find challenging I've tried thinned oatmeal and cream of wheat but my hernia hated it -- felt like rocks in my chest -- I'm scared to try anything like that again ... Baby food blended and FAGE Greek yogurt blended with the RTD shakes are ok but still challenging so I don't drink those all the time -- I do feel like I need more nutrients and protein along with Water of course --- it's a full time commitment I've been battling constipation recently and found that colace capsules plus magnesium citrate have helped Sip sip sip all day so you don't end up in ER My blood pressure, oxygen and temperature were normal in ER but blood sugar was low - I have no co morbidities Hope you feel better soon!

To Kimberly1184: A NUT that strict may be trying to keep you from indulging in mashed potatoes or oatmeal or other starchy stuff. Hang in there. You will be on regular foods in no time. To Jlnrgn: Shame on folks who can't have you over just to enjoy your company. They are small-minded to not accomodate you. While everone else is eating roast beef, you could be sipping on broth. They haven't heard of steamed veggies? When they are eating strawberry shortcake, you could nibble a couple of berries in Greek yogurt. Well, instead of waiting for an invitation, throw a festive soire yourself where you can control what you eat. Oh, by the way, don't invite them. After all, if they can't eat steamed veggies, softly roasted meat (or its broth) or fresh berries, they shouldn't come anyway.

One Month Anniversary- June 29th
Dibaby44 replied to IamKe69's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Im June 23 and it really is flying by. Although i have to go back in monday to be scoped and opened up. I cant eat anything, even yogurt for the past 5 days. So one bump in the road. Hope you are doing well with it. Im literally melting away. 46 pounds all together -
Try it. I did vanilla unjury with plain Fage zero. Then I added the usual cinnamon and a bit of splenda. It makes the greek yogurt extra filling to your stomach.

I just got back from a week long cruise in April. It was awesome! I ate what I wanted but because I am banded, I ate less. I had frozen yogurt every day and as many times a day as I wanted. You get so much exercise while onboard that I would not worry. You walk everywhere. I had Mongolian stirfry for lunch everyday and formal dining fantastic menus for supper. I did not skimp. I did not worry. Just remember that you will be eating less. I lost four pounds during the nine days I was gone and I ate the most fantastic food onboard and in every port.

4 months protein question.
Catherine707 replied to nesa83's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 11 months post surgery and still have a Protein shake or fortified greek yogurt almost every day. I am not a huge fan of meat and I am allergic to soy, so I need the whey protein from the shakes to ensure I get my 60 grams each day. -
I was banded on 1/4/12 and have not lost an ounce! I haven't gained an ounce either (thank God), but I'm getting very frustrated. The protien shakes were making me nauseous, so I switched to Slim Fast but I still feel hungry and snack on fat free yogurts and crackers throughout the day. I get my first fill on 2/6 and am praying the weight starts coming off. After a month on liquids, protien shakes/bars and about 1-full meal a day I was expecting at least a few pounds. Anyone have any advise and or experiences they can share.

Ugh!!! Weight Gain After 3 Years Banded!!
kll724 replied to talkalot1981's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Me too Talkalot1981! I have had the same problem. I am not sure what to do, either. And my surgeon has said he wants me to gain control of my weight on my own. He knows that I eat sliders, and wants me to stop. I LOVE peanut butter.! I have finally found a dry peanut butter to add to my yogurt to increase my protein and get myself off the regular peanut butter. For some reason, unknown to myself, after a slip and unfill, in my case, a revision, the fills do not affect you the way they originally did. I can't tolerate much more than 5cc, and I am at that now! I know that I am not any help in your problem, but just wanted to sympathize and say, me too! Best wishes, Karen -
First time feeling some buyers remorse
catwoman7 replied to WhatATool:-)'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
five years out here. I can eat anything except for really fatty meals. For example, before I had surgery, my husband and I loved to go out for Friday night fish fries. Two or three fish filets, battered or breaded and deep-fried, topped with tartar sauce, with a side of fries and a side of cole slaw made with mayo. That would be a no-go for me now. I'd be in the bathroom getting sick after eating that. I could maybe eat half of a deep-fried fish filet. Anything else I ate with it would have to be non-fatty. but pretty much anything else - yes. Just less of it. I used to be able to eat half a large pizza in one sitting. Now I can eat one or two pieces. but when you think about it - that's the way normal-sized women usually eat (unless they're exercise fiends or were blessed with great metabolism). A few weeks before surgery, I watched what my female co-workers ate for lunch. There were a couple who ate what at the time I would have called a normal lunch. A sandwich, chips, maybe a cookie. Or maybe take-out from a deli or a fast food place. But a majority of them ate things like a sandwich and an apple. Or a sandwich and some baby carrots. Or a thing of yogurt and bagel. Honestly, I think that's just normal in the non-obese world. Unfortunately, I might add... But that's the way I usually eat now, too. I started counting calories when I was about a year out. I still do. As long as I stay at or under 1700 calories most days of the week, I can maintain my weight. I do occasionally go over that - and sometimes by a lot (like on special occasions), but I try to keep that to only special occasions. Most days, I do stay within my range. That calorie range will vary for everyone depending on a lot of factors. But anyway, to address your first concern, yes - I could work ribs into my daily plan and still stay within my range... -

progression of foods
Amanda131 replied to rylie19805's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Serna- I spent two weeks on full liquids, then one week on soft proteins(eggs, hamburger, fish, greek yogurt, etc.) and now I can have soft foods (no bread, Pasta, rice, under cooked veggies, etc.) until the 3 month point. I can then start slowly adding foods back in as tolerated. I have had no food issues on this plan thus far. My NUT is ridiculously nice and even gave her email in case I had questions, I'm so sorry you got a she-devil! I am looking for a good brand of Protein powder as well, I haven't found anything I love yet. Good Luck! Amanda -
OK.... Now I know. I had my sleeve one full week today and made a protein shake with chocolate powder, yogurt, vanilla cappuccino protein shake, a spoon full of mocha and 1/4 cup of coffee flavored gelato.... why did I do that? The whole fabulous concoction would be rich for someone with a WHOLE stomach pre-surgey but my little healing tummy lost it's mind! Four little swallows shaky, nervous and SICK. OMG. Was that dumping? It was bad. Wow...that will keep you honest. I had done so well all week.

I fortified Greek yogurt with unflavored whey Protein (GNC Pro Performance), I also ate cottage cheese, pureed Soups (yum butter nut squash soup!) Egg Drop Soup from the Chinese restaurant. Scrambled and hard cooked eggs. I also had corned beef hash. It is really high in sodium so don't have it too often, but it had such a different flavor and was just what I needed to get me past the "I can't stand it anymore"! blahs!

Hi all- I started my pre op diet yesterday and things went pretty well. I was a little tired and ended up going to bed earlier than normal. I'm curious, how much weight did you lose on your pre op diet? My surgeon's diet is two weeks, a shake for Breakfast, shake for lunch, yogurt/fruit/veggies for a snack, and a small dinner. I must admit I'm quite hungry and even dreamed about fried chicken and mac & cheese last night. I found that quite funny because the last time I had a piece of chicken was 7 years ago!

I couldn't agree more I'm 4 weeks out and today I had a half of protein shake and half a Greek yogurt and that's it. Everything makes me feel sick. It bums me out I'm depressed and weepy because I have no energy to handle my 4 little ones. I wish I knew it would get better!

To much protien a to little protien???
gentylwind replied to NEWME2008's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No worries, everything I am eating is in the food list my surgeon gave me for the first two weeks after surgery. I am on full liquids until a week from this Friday, then two weeks of mushies, then on to a normal diet. Full liquids on his list include FF pudding, FF creamed soups (thinned and strained), FF yogurt with no fruit pieces, thin oatmeal, thin cream of wheat, thin applesauce, skim milk, plus all the Clear Liquids and probably other stuff I am not remembering at the moment due to not having chosen to eat them thus far. -
Greek yogurt is NOT too high in carbs. Obviously you won't be eating other high calorie carbs i.e. breads, pasta. Here are the stats on 0% Oikos Greek plain yogurt: 3/4 cup - 100 calories Carbs - 7 grams Protein - 18 grams Sounds perfect to me. Go ahead and indulge in some greek yogurt! I like to add a little of sugar free jam to mine, delish!

Hello, newbie here. I am looking for some advice or insight or encouragement. I had the sleeve done on January 28 & had no problem with the diet of liquids, then yogurt type stuff, but when I went to my Dr this week they told me to start eating soft foods like eggs, tuna, mashed potatoes, etc. I cannot get these items down. They just stick in my esophagus until I throw up. Out of fear maybe, I have reverted back to broth, yogurts.... I feel so discouraged & I am really, really hungry. I wasn't before but I am now. I am obsessing over food. I have lost 27 pounds so far so I am happy with that, but I don't want get depressed. I have thrown up daily & I just need to know it won't always be like this. I am eating broth or yogurt...no protein shakes because what I have is nauseating me now. I'm going to find something new tomorrow at GNC. Anyway, please any thoughts, comments, insight, advice.....it's all sooo appreciated. Thanks!!

Well I guess I can try to remember the stats to answer your questions. 1. How long was your 'clear' liquid stage? 1 week 2. How long was your liquid stage? 2 weeks 3. How long was your 'smooth/mushy' stage? about 2 months though I stuck with soft foods till about 6 months because I couldn't eat (i.e. tolerate) anything fresh till then. 4. How soon did you transition to 'regular/normal eating? If you ask my friend and relative, I have not transitioned to "normal eating" because I eat so little at a meal. Not sure I will ever eat the way I did before getting sleeved. If your questions is when I transitioned to "normal food" I would say I have been eating "normal food" since the beginning, just choosing foods that met consistency requirements for the stage. What I mean is that I never choose to eat baby food (some NUTS recommended this for the first soft foods but I could never get past the idea so I choose foods like yogurt, eggs, cheese and tofu) 5. What was your SW? Just as it states on my stats 265. 6. How much had you lost at 1 month? 25 lbs 7. How much had you lost at 3 months? 49 lbs 8. What was your total loss at 6 months (using SW)? 70 lbs Hope the answers here help you in your Quest.

I really hate Greek yogurt, can I use a couple teaspoons of white sugar to help it taste better???
-
I started soft foods last week and here are some of the things I eat: scrambled eggs, tuna with light mayo, canned chicken with light mayo, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, thinned oatmeal, deli turkey with laughing cow cheese wedge, pintos and cheeses go made like Taco Bell, turkey meatballs in blender with some pasta sauce. My doc told me I could have any soft food that I could cut with a cheap plastic fork and it not break.

I'm a little more than 9 mos out and am pretty happy with the progress that I have made and the good fortune that I have had in terms of avoiding major complications. I am continuing to struggle with some food aversions that are beginning to concern me and are making it difficult to eat a varied diet. It started with chicken, which the mere thought of eating is completely revolting to me. I'm also increasingly feeling that way now about things like shrimp and pork. All of these are things that I liked before surgery. Making matters worse, I have never really liked fish, so I'm starting to run low on types of meat that I can readily eat. I still consistently hit my daily Protein target, but that is largely with the help of things like Protein Bars, Greek yogurt, small amounts of cheese, and things like chili. I've mentioned this to my nutritionist, but she has not really had any advice apart from emphasizing the importance of eating a varied diet. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Were you able to do anything to improve things?
