  1. VSG pretty much replaced the lapband a few years ago as the non-RNY option. It was still pretty new when I had my surgery, so I wasn't sure I wanted to go there (besides the fact I had GERD...). I was a little worried it might become "Lapband 2". I think at this point it's been around long enough to have proven itself - but yes, there do some to be a lot of people who end up revising.

VSG to RNY - Not excited

I have a theory that since VSG is having so many issues with revision due to GERD, that Mexico is now picking up MGB as a new surgery option. But what the hell do I know? 🤣 Hopefully the future successes with MGB in Mexico will catch on here in the US.
  3. lots of people have done that revision. The thing is, like with VSG, you're going to have to change your habits and follow the program to lose the weight. The surgery will only take you so far. I lost a truckload of weight, but I worked really hard at it. And yes, the revision should at minimum improve, and will likely eradicate, the GERD. btw - weight loss is never as strong or quick with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but that said, there are people who've been very successful with revisions. If you are committed, you'll get there.
  4. Is MGB an option for you at that practice? The weight loss approaches DS, with fewer side effects, and there's a proven great effect with VSG-->MGB revisions. The DS revision wouldn't do anything for your reflux, so that'd be on borrowed time anyway. The MGB could solve it.

VSG to RNY - Not excited

I see. DS is very malabsorptive, more so than RNY, so it has a much higher risk of malnutrition and the malaborption of fats hinders absorption of fat soluble vitamins. So I guess in a surgeons mind, the benefits have to outweigh the risks, which is why my surgeon only does it on patients with poorly controlled diabetics. So patient compliance with DS surgery isn't negotiable. I'm having revision due to GERD soon as well. There's many RNY'ers on here that have done exceptionally well with their surgeries. I'm sure they will post about their successes soon. You will do well with RNY if you follow your surgeons program. Best wishes!

  7. I am intrested in getting a revision from vsg to mgb. Do you get to choose how long the dr should make your bypass? How small do they make your stomach, the size of vsg stomach or the size of full gastric by pass? Are you guys happy with the results? Do you get less hungry with the mgb as opposed to the vsg or lapband? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I was going through my insurance requirements for revision surgery. I found it interesting that for something that supposedly rarely happens, it's a documented reason for revision for sleeve to bypass. 🤔

    weight plateau and energy loss

Does your surgeon prescribe B12 injections? I'm pre op for revision right now but with my program I'll have one every month for the first twelve months in an effort to prevent anemia. Maybe your bariatric vitamins don't contain enough iron for you.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

You had reflux with your band and your surgeon revised you to sleeve? I see your revision was recent. I'm curious if you have reflux still but I assume you're on a PPI so it's too soon to know what happened with the reflux. I'm pretty sure I've seen people on this site that had sleeve with a normal bmi that developed GERD and they had to revise to Bypass to cure the GERD.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences

    February 2019 weight loss buds

My sleeve is so unpredictable. I’ll have days where I swear I can eat like a “normal” person and I honestly forget I’m sleeved. Then I’ll have days where a boiled egg fills me up for hours and I have zero interest in eating. What’s even weirder is that my husband- who has NOT had any bari surgery- eats a lot like me and sometimes he runs into restriction. Tonite we had date night and went to one of our favorite pubs. We split a chicken sandwich with fries, each had 1 cocktail and 1 beer. We didn’t even manage to finish half of our halves of the sandwich and also failed to drink over half our beers! We laughed that we were failing so bad at splurging. One thing that is kind of alarming me is that my acid reflux seems to be kicked in overdrive lately. I’m about to really clean up my eating and drinking prepping for this next foot surgery, so I’m hoping to catch a break from the constant heartburn. I really, really, really am happy with where I am and the LAST thing I want is a revision due to this reflux. I love my sleeve— I don’t want a pouch. I don’t have the best tips to remember to drink water bc I guzzle down 2/3 of my daily water before I eat for the first time of the day. I’ll literally have around 60 ounces of water between waking up and eating around 10-11 am, then drink maybe 12-16 more the whole rest of the day. It tends to leave me feeling somewhat dehydrated by bedtime, but bedtime is when I will “treat” myself to my Coke Zero. My hair never really came back. It’s still fairly thin, but I will never regret having the VGS. Good God, I hope the kidney stone thing never happens to me: I’m a wimp when it comes to stuff like that.

That thread was started by @MiniGastricBypassDude and he's in Europe somewhere. That thread is about his MGB surgery experience. My surgeon doesn't do MGB either. I think it's more popular outside of the US for whatever reason. I'm revising to Gastric Bypass soon.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

3.5 weeks post op revision to bypass for severe GERD, down 14 pounds, which I'm super thrilled about! In the past couple of days I've started to feel fairly normal physically. The biggest mind trip is getting full on 2 oz of deli meat. If I eat any more than that I feel miserable. No problems getting my fluids in. I went back to work last week and felt good but this week I can tell I'm back to full strength. I even started walking on the track at the adults only community center I joined (and health insurance pays for). The Y has a track too but it's always sooooo loud and busy. Mad at myself

Sorry to hear of your loss and challenges. We all deal with stress differently, so the thought of seeking assistance with that is good advice. I will say from the weight perspective, I was six years out from my sleeve and had gained back about 45 pounds. I found that what worked for me was to go on a 'time restricted feeding' schedule, and to eat a diet that was generally keto when I did eat. I skipped breakfast and only ate from Noon to 6pm. For those two meals I would have a serving of protein, and a green vegetable or salad. I was able to drop about 20 pounds in a couple of months. I stopped because my hiatal hernia had worsened enough that it had to be fixed with revision to bypass, but the diet program was working well. There is a nutrition doctor named Dr. Jason Fung who develops programs for insulin control diets, which is what I based my program on. You might want to Google him and check out his information.
  18. If they will cover the hiatal hernia repair, if you get a bariatric surgeon to do it, the surgeon might consider removing the band and doing the revision rny at the same time. Since the insurance is paying for the operating room, and all of the anesthesia fees, sometimes it's an easy way to get services done at the same time. Usually the surgeon charges the patient a flat rate that is much cheaper than having the surgery done by itself. If that makes sense...
  19. It's been a rough couple of days since being released from the hospital. Woke yesterday in a lot more pain and running a fever of 102.5 and chills. Called the surgeon and he said just to take some Tylenol. My partners were not ok with that so they took me to the er just to make sure there was no infection. No infection, ileus causing bowel obstruction/constipation that I'm just supposed to take stool softeners (which I already was) and a fleet enema. Like the constipation/slow motility is the reason we were going for the distal revision so since the revision wasn't done, this isn't going to change. I also expected the pain and they treated me like I was there looking for drugs because I'm a chronic pain patient. I'm not sure why I expected anything different. Still running the high fever if I fall behind on the Tylenol. My surgeon does keep callin, and gave me his cell phone number if there were any other issues. I reminded him this morning that slow motility/constipation was one of the issues I was complaining about prior to surgery. He said we would be looking at a "more sophisticated " surgery than the distal RNY but we would talk more at my follow-up
  20. I had my band removed almost a year ago and I'm in the process of getting a bypass due to GERD. I never had any issues like slippage or erosion. Only the reflux that progressed to GERD. Now my esophagus is permanently altered, so my only choice to fix it is bypass. My surgeon wouldn't do bypass at the same time as band removal because she wanted to give my digestive tract a chance to heal from the GERD. I haven't gained any weight back after it was removed. I've actually lost a bit of weight. I'm weird, I know. 😂 I think it was because I was relying on slider foods because they were easiest to eat due to the acid issues. And now that the band is gone and the acid issues are better, I can eat healthier foods like fruits and veggies that my filled band wouldn't allow. And I have had no issues with insurance. Mine has covered all of my surgeries and will also pay for revision. I'm sorry about your insurance issues. Bariatric surgery should be covered by all insurance just like a heart surgery or knee replacement surgery. Best wishes!
  21. Hello all, I am having trouble with my band and want to get it removed. I have acid reflux constantly and I'm worried it's ruining my esophagus. I always feel like I have a lump in my throat. I was advised to remove the band and get a gastric bypass in its place so I don't gain all the weight back that I've lost and will continue to lose weight. My presurgery weight was 315 lbs. I got down to 195 over a five-year period but I had some issues. I had a slippage a couple of years after I got it and had to get it repaired. I had an incident where I couldn't get anything down (even water) so they removed all of the fluid. I was afraid to get it filled again. I've gained back quite a lot of weight. I weigh 243 lbs now. I'm 5-6" so I'd like to get down to around 150-160 lbs. My primary insurance, Florida Blue, excludes all bariatric surgery. 😡 I have great secondary insurance, BCBS Michigan, that covered my original band surgery (at almost 100%). I had the office coordinator at one of the doctor's offices that I called about a consultation tell me that my secondary won't cover anything if my primary doesn't cover it because they only pick up costs after a claim is filed. This "coordination of benefits" is pretty crappy for the consumer. I'd love feedback, especially from anyone who had health insurance issues like this or had a revision surgery to a gastric bypass. Was the band removal surgery and gastric bypass done at the same time or did you have two surgeries? I'd like to get it all done at the same time rather than have two but I've read that some doctors will only do the two procedures separately. Lastly, I've also read that the band's "shelf-life" is around ten years due to possible erosion issues. When I originally got it, 20 years ago, I was told that it was for life but could be removed if there were any problems down the road. Sorry this is so long. 🙂 Take care, Holly
  22. I had a revision from VSG to RNY in August. I remember in my 4th month I started feeling full faster too. Some have said that it was because we are completely healed at the point. I'm almost at 8 months, and I still am averaging about 750 to 800 cal per day. Similar to your dietician, my surgeon told me months ago to eat at least 900. That is challenging for me mentally and physically at the moment even though I'm passed my goal. There are a lot of people here that stay around 800 cal until goal but I'm glad you posted this so we can see other people's opinions.

    Just had revision

Congratulations on your revision. Glad you're recovering well.
  24. Good luck with your upcoming revision. I gained back 50% of my weight during COVID, but have recently lost it back again. I still struggle with eating due to boredom or stress.
