Had my revision from sleeve to bypass on the 28th...
Smanky replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wasn't to take anti-inflamatories for the first few months because it's a stomach irritant, and with my GERD and propensity to develop stomach ulcers, that would have increased the risk of things getting stirred up. However it wasn't a "never again" thing. I take them now. I'd ask your team why they've permanently taken them off the table for you. As for swallowing pills - yeah, post-surgery seems to have permanently made it unpleasant. Never bothered me before, but now I avoid large tablets if there's a smaller option. I also opt for whatever chewable supplements I can get. I still have some I must swallow, so I just go slow. Can't speak for the revision weight-loss rate, but I hope all goes well for you now! You've certainly earned it! -
Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to areyoukiddingme's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve and loved it.....until I didn't. I lost 116 pounds in 10 months. I was working out 5 days per week. I was doing weight training, core and strength training, and cardio. THEN I started having major GERD symptoms. They were insane. I was put on 80mg of Nexium daily and still had break through GERD. Also has gastritis and esophagitis. 4 endoscopies and 1 colonoscopy later (and upwards of 30 polyps removed) I was scheduled for my revision from sleeve to bypass. I just had it done on the 28th. And while the recovery SUCKS majorly, I know once I'm past this, I'll have my life back. Oh, and I never had any reflux or GERD before, which is why I chose the sleeve to begin with. -
I just had Gastric Bypass surgery June 24. :)

Had my revision from sleeve to bypass on the 28th...

And I have a couple of questions. Why are we not allowed to have any kind of anti-inflammatories? I was told never again. I can't even take turmeric. Also, were you ever able to take pills comfortably? I was told no pills for the first 8 weeks (except for 2 of my MS meds because they can't be opened or crushed and don't come in liquid form) and I absolutely struggle with those 2 pills. They're hard to swallow and they hurt. Will it always be this way? And finally, I know there's a lot of different answers for this, but I just want to get a general idea. How much weight did you lose if you had a revision to bypass? My surgeon said I could expect to lose about 60 pounds (but he also said I stay really strict with my diet and exercise so I could actually lose 70 or so, since I lost more with the sleeve than he initially thought I would) so I'm just trying to see if it's realistic to think that I could lose 60-70 pounds in a year if I stick to the diet and working out. -
Curious About Post-Op Days
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to FlowerGirl44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first 2 weeks after my sleeve, I had a lot of pain, difficulty walking, and I was constipated. I'm now on the other side of my revision from sleeve to bypass, and I have........... a lot of pain and difficulty walking. Not sure if I'm constipated again or not. It's been 2 days since my surgery, tho, and I haven't gone yet. So probably. -
I had a surgery with Mario Almanza and he’s by far the worst! I would avoid at all cost!! I wish I would’ve walked out after 17 patients. I was the last one on feb 20th 2023. I woke up in so much pain and I immediately complained and they kept saying it’s gas pain. Every way I turned they said it’s gas pain. They called his assistant who spoke English I explained to him this pain is not normal. He said it’s gas pain and there is other patient with more serious problem he has to go see. I was in disbelief. Im currently 4 months in dropped over 60 pounds not because only surgery because I’m so malnourished. I cannot eat any type of food not even liquid I vomit daily 5x. I’ve been in and out the hospital every other week. found out dr Mario Almanza cut into my lower esophageal sphincter where acid travel and bile travels freely and I’m diagnosed with severe GERD, gastritis, and damage to my esopgahas. Doctors found stitching also stables in my lower throat area. I was told there is no fix to this issue I have had 4 dilations. I was told I could get the bypass but it might kill me. I am young my life is completely ruined I have reached out to Alamnza multiple times no response so I decided to leave public comments on his instagram and he blocked me! Please avoid this horrible doctor!

SURGERY DAY!!!!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone. Sorry it took so long to update you guys, but I've been in A LOT of pain. Took a while to get the regimen right, but now it's good. My surgery took longer than anticipated. Instead of 2 hours, it was 2 hours and 45 minutes. I spent 2 hours in recovery before coming back to my room. I go home later today, and I can't wait. For some reason, my doctor didn't go in using the same place/scars from my sleeve. So now I have scars from my gall bladder removal in 97, scars from my sleeve in 2022, and now scars from the bypass in 2023. Definitely won't be wearing any bikinis anytime soon. I haven't had any trouble with water or taking tiny pills. But larger pills are a no no for me. At least for right now. I've been able to get up and walk around a bit, but I have to time it right with my pain meds. I take them every 6 hours, but they seem to wear off after 5, so that last hour SUCKS. Been dealing with a lot of dizziness, weakness, trouble keeping my balance. But my hubby has been here with me, helping me when I have to go walk, so that's been good. I'm very excited to be on the other side of this. I'm excited to heal, start working out again, and hit my weight loss goal. No matter how much pain I'm in right now, I have ZERO regrets. -
Once you’ve lost or almost lost your weight you’ll start exploring what you can or can’t eat, how much of it & how often. It may be you can have ice cream once a week or maybe once a month. It’s all about discovering what works for you, & balancing maintenance of your weight while still enjoying your life. Yes, dumping is a possibility which will restrict your ability to tolerate sugar or fats. But it doesn’t affect everyone - less than about 30% I believe for bypass & less with sleeve. Some even work out how much they can eat without dumping or find non sugar or low fat alternatives.

traumatized by puréed
Flamingowatcher2023 replied to BypassTheBS's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was also traumatized by the pureed stage! So glad to know I wasn't alone. I did read a comment that said "Don't forget about cottage cheese!" I'd rather eat pureed chicken. And that ain't happening. I am just a little over 2 months out from my gastric bypass. I am still having quite a bit of trouble swallowing, quite frankly, most meats. I have had most success with very thinly shaved deli ham and turkey. I know I'm supposed to be eating 60-90 grams of protein each day, but I'm not getting it from meat. Fortunately, I love the high-protein Greek yogurt. It is saving my life right now. -
2.5 Weeks Post-Op sleeve revision to bypass. A little nervous reading these posts

weight loss after revision is almost always slower than after a virgin surgery, but it can be done. You just have to really work at it.. -
JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Mira88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, today is the day. SURGERY DAY. It's more complicated than when I had the gastric sleeve because not only are they doing a revision from sleeve to bypass, they are removing my entire lower and mid stomach (the part that is bypassed) because that's where all my polyps develop. It's a 2 hour surgery, and I was told I'll be in recovery for about an hour after. It's like having 2 bariatric surgeries in 1, so the recovery/healing/down time will be worse than my original surgery. I'll be in the hospital for 2 nights, so I'll be home sometime on Friday the 30th. That sucks, and is really annoying (I hate hospitals) but I know it's necessary and will be worth it. I can't wait to get my life back. Working out, feeling good, no more in and out of the hospital, being ME again. This has been a looooong road, but I'm finally almost at the finish line. It's gonna be awesome when I hit my weight loss goal (I'm 70 pounds away and speaking it into existence now that THIS TIME NEXT YEAR I will be at my goal weight). So wish me luck, and I'll see ya'll on the flip side -

New obesity meds in progress

Incretins like GLP-1, GIP, DPP-4 were isolated in the 1980s, these mimetic have been in trials since the 1990s and received FDA approval in the early 2000s for the treatment of Diabetes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6497767/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5707151/#:~:text=First in man studies reported,36)amide in human subjects. What’s new is the technology (delivery, longevity, combination), indications for obesity, insulin resistant, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular issues, PCOS and even addiction. The consensus is that these medications are long term. No need to worry about what happens if they go off of them because they are intended to be a life long commitment for most (but so is WLS). https://dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/dom.14496 As far as support with lifestyle, Wegovy (FDA approved for obesity) offers a support program https://www.wegovy.com/coverage-and-savings/get-wegotogether-support.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh6Tc2Ynm_wIV1TjUAR3YdgGuEAAYASADEgLARfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Also Weight watchers just bought one of the biggest telehealth prescribers of this class of medications https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/weightwatchers-buys-telehealth-platform-sequence-ozempic-wegovy-rcna73753 I’m all for new tech and there hasn’t been any major breakthroughs in the management of obesity that works this well since WLS. Many candidates for WLS may never pursue it, also many WLS patients battling regain may not be eligible for revisions. The access to a pharmacological route that works is an amazing step in the right direction and I’m absolutely on board with the advancement of the science in this field. -

Hi, i had bypass on March 10th in Ireland. I started out at 18.9 stone and I'm currently 14.2 stone/lbs. I can eat almost everything but in small potions. Bread.... no interest it doesn't sit well. I'm not tracking or probably not hitting my protein or fluid goals. Exercise just starting, walking and some sea swimming. But I'm so happy i took this step. So happy. -
March 23 buddies yet?
SemperVeritas replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the bypass done on March 7th. I'm 5'4 and starting weight was 233, 221.4 on day of surgery. Today I weighed in at 184.6, so about 48 lbs lost in total. Really excited to hit 50 lost, and then I'll only have about 5 lbs to get to my previous low I had reached on my own about 5 years ago. I'm averaging about 1100 calories a day, and I track with LoseIt because I could see myself snacking around my restriction. I do "formal" exercise about 3x week, and I'm generally pretty busy around the house or going for walks. Energy level is pretty low though, I definitely don't feel like I'm bouncing around lol. Hope everyone else is well and healthy! -
My journey has been complicated
LA’s Journey posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. My name is Lee Ann and like many others seems like I’ve been on a diet for the majority of my life. It’s been a constant battle. At one point in my life I weighed over 400 lbs and I was able to lose and get back some of my confidence. In 2010 I had a major car accident when a driver ran a light. And I became disabled because of the injuries that caused. With the injuries I was unable to get around like I once did and then some of the medications I was on added weight and my weight issues truly started getting me depressed so I decided to go through with gastric surgery. So about 6 years ago I started the process. Frustrating because I was having to restart 3 times because of either the scheduling or not having a dr appointment for 6 months in a row either because of how I was feeling or because the doctor was booked. Seemed like I wasn’t ever going to complete it. Then finally 4 years ago I had the gastric sleeve surgery and at the beginning problems started. I was so sick and my stitches started to open and I received no support from the doctors office and then the pandemic hit and my calls and emails went unanswered for 2-1/2 years. So when we moved so I could help my mom with her everyday life I looked into seeing a different gastric doctor. I’m still getting sick all most everyday and night plus the weight is coming back and I don’t understand how. I’m not sitting around eating just whatever I want. I am trying to get more food in but it’s hard when I hardly ever feel hungry. So after talking with my doctor about everything we’ve decided to go through with getting the gastric bypass. I’m hoping this will correct the issues and hopefully it’s soon. -
Hi all! I had surgery on 6/13 sleeve to bypass revision. I was struggling with the liquid diet and I had some fish (cod & salmon) in small portions but only 10/11 days post op. I feel an aching pain in my left side all of a sudden but am passing stool so I dont think a blockage. I didnt lose any weight on my 2 week marker, I remained the same. Did I damage something? Also having a hard time knowing when I am full. Good luck to everyone out there

Sleeve revision with FEP Blue
Ranece 49 replied to Jones218's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, I’m FEP BLUE Illinois and it took 7 months for my surgery to happen. I had revisional gastric bypass. Don’t give up it’s worth it -
Yep, sounds like every side effect I’ve read about. It’s something I worry about: not eating & losing weight only because you feel too sick not because you are making better food choices & establishing better habits. And what happens when you stop the medication? Will you be able to continue to eat the much lower calorie intake needed to maintain your lower weight? My question is were you stalled or had you reached your set point - the weight your body is happiest at? It’s always much harder to lose below & maintain a weight that is lower than your set point. Your body will keep taking you back to that weight. Not everyone loses all the weight they may want to lose. The average weight loss for sleeve or bypass is about 65% of the weight to be lost to put you in a healthier weight range. From the numbers you gave you had already exceeded that average which is something to celebrate. Your choice of course but talk to your prescribing doctor about how to manage the side effects & the what happens after you stop taking the medication.

Can I start taking Ibuprofen again ?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to KathyLev's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I had my sleeve done, I was told nothing but Tylenol for the first 8 weeks, then after that, only as needed and not everyday. Now that I'm about to have my revision from sleeve to bypass, I was told never again. Only Tylenol from here on out. No Ibuprofen, no Aspirin, nothing. -

RickM replied to KathyLev's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is a big maybe - talk to your surgeon and see what their position is. They may have one thing published in their guidebook (don't take them, ever...) and something else if you talk to them directly about your specific condition. NSAIDs are a big NO NO for a bypass, which has been well established owing to specific problems with that configuration, which doesn't exist with the sleeve. When things started with the sleeve, most docs simply carried over their same instructions to their sleeve patients - intellectually they knew there was a difference, but their experience didn't tell them how much. Many now consider them to be a small no no for the sleeve, while still prohibiting them for the RNY, but that still varies. Occasional use is usually approved, but they want to avoid consistent use. Our team had been doing sleeves for some twenty years, mostly via the DS, when I had mine done twelve years ago, and their experience indicated no problems with NSAIDs even shortly after surgery (more recent conversations with him indicated waiting a couple of months or so.) I like to be conservative on such things, so I avoid them mostly, but use them occasionally. These days I mostly use Rx meloxicam for occasional orthopedic issues, which is a Cox-2 inhibitor and supposedly somewhat friendlier to the stomach than NSAIDs. -

I never dealt with a lot of pain pre-op but when I did, Aleve seemed to really knock it out for me. I will miss it. Now I take Tylenol/acetaminophen if needed to avoid getting any ulcers from NSAIDS. Sounds permanent. Now I am dealing with a different kind of pain almost 3 months out from Gastric Bypass. I noticed it all last week and still with me today. My bones ache. Not my muscles. My bones. My next follow-up appointment is on July 12th. -
My Gastric Sleeve Journey
MarisAthena replied to TRClark23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had the same surgery as you did on 6/5. The pain is from the hiatal hernia repair surgery. It will get better with time. You should do research on the hiatal hernia repair surgery, it has slightly different requirements than the gastric bypass. The fact that they did both at the same time for both of us makes me think it is quite common, but they should have spoken to you about it because the pain I had was excruciating for me and my surgeon was very clear that it was due to the hiatal hernia and not due to the roux en y. -
Antibiotics absorption and gastric bypass
MarisAthena posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
While the decreased vitamin and mineral absorption after gastric bypass is very well known and researched, not very much can be found about various drugs absorption or antibiotics absorption. I did a bit of research on this topic since I know UTIs are a concern especially for women. It is interesting to see that some antibiotics absorb as low as 37% while others absorb at 100%. Please see below some articles on this subject. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/754391 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32314257/ https://www.jabfm.org/content/jabfp/20/3/310.full.pdf https://www.drugs.com/article/antibiotics-for-uti.html
