Another year......will 2018 be THE YEAR?!
Jd101 replied to KDiddy0312's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
i have been looking into getting wls for about a year now. I have a couple of family members who are 2 years post op and are doing great. They both had the bypass. At first I was one of them people who thought I would be taking the easy way out. As you read and do lots of research, you will find that it's really not the easy way out. It is a tool and you have to work just as hard as the 'tool' does. It's a huge lifestyle change, but one for the better. Don't let what other people say affect your decisions. You have to do it for you. I have decided to go the sleeve route because I don't like the idea of having anything rerouted. Should be setting a date sometime in Jan. My insurance doesn't cover wls here so I had to start looking at other options. While doing so it has opened up a lot more information abt wls in general. This site is very helpful as well and gives a lot of personal experiences. Sorry for the long post. Best of luck in whatever route you decide. -
Hi! Good to see a fellow mail carrier on here. I had surgery last november and went back to my route after 11 days. I was fine by that time. I probably could have done it after a week but i would have still been a little sore. Best of luck on your surgery.

Well I'm officially a loser! I had my surgery April 8th and everything went great! I walked shortly after waking up, little to no pain but I did stay on top of the pain meds at first. Went home the next day, have been sleeping in my recliner and doing fine. I'm on three weeks of full liquids. I've been eating puréed and some soft foods though. I had been throwing up daily after eating, but for the past two days I've been really careful and luckily have not puked. I am happy to say that I am down 11 lbs as of this past Monday. You can already see a difference in my face and down two pant sizes!! I'm now back to work and feeling full of energy. My incisions still get sore but nothing intolerable. My mom started to freak me out right before surgery saying that this surgery was messed up and she didn't like it. Never mentioned that before though. She's my toughest critic also. I try not to share too much with her because I don't need the lectures. My husband on the other hand, has been terrific. He's been really supportive and excited for my loss. We've been able to talk about the surgery and weight loss very openly, which I really like. My friends haven't really been as supportive as I thought they would be. Especially my coworkers. They acted like nothing had happened when I came back to work. Oh well, that's ok. I know who my true friends are. I find it very supportive to be on these forums also. Next Monday I'm going to go to a weight loss surgical support meeting that I found nearby my home. I've also been doing weekly counseling with a lady that is a gastric bypass patient herself. She is four years out and is so amazing!! I suggest finding someone that has knowledge of the surgery or has done it themselves if you are considering counseling for food issues and what not. Well I am super happy and excited for this journey that I am on. I am down a total of 32 lbs since pre op. only going down from here. The hardest part was the first week home and not being able to eat, so I cheated and got really sick. Not worth it at all. This is all a learning process though and I learn from my mistakes. I regretted this the first week actually because I was mourning the loss of food so badly, but now that the inches are coming off and the scales moving and feeling better everyday I'm glad that I had it done. Everyday does get easier. Luckily I haven't had any complications or major side effects like some people do. Hopefully it'll stay that way too. Good luck to all that reads my blog.

Upcoming Surgery in May!
DaisyAndSunshine replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey thanks for the feedback - Yeh I have been reading into stories of many PCOSers and about Bypass vs Sleeve. I think data also shows long term success with Bypass is better with Sleeves esp if you have some hormonal setback. So I think I'll stick to Bypass for now! It gives me more of the positive vibe and lack of regret which I may have with Sleeve if things don't go as planned! At least with Bypass I won't have that regret of "I could have chosen Bypass"! Ofc Bypass comes with its own setback and side effects, but I think I am comfortable taking the chance! Do you have your surgery scheduled already?! -
I chose the band mostly because of the lower mortality/complication rate. I didn't have any other health problems and didn't feel bypass was worth the extra risk. Also because I too have a history of losing and gaining it back. I feared I would do really well with bypass at first, but I would be one who would gain it all back after a few years because I would have a bad couple of months and stretch out my stomach. The band is always adjustable and if I screw up a little a few years down the road, I can get back on the wagon. I wish you the best of luck whichever you decide is right for you.

I think only you can answer which way you want to go with this, but if it was me I would go with the band. If something happens later in life the band can be removed, if your not losing weight in can be replaced with a smaller band. I just think the lap band is a much safer route to go, just my 2 cents  I have a friend that had the bypass done and she was one of the unlucky one's that had a horrifying experience, I'm sure you've heard a few of them, but anyways she is fine now and the only thing she has to on a regular basis is get b12 shots monthly. Good luck to you I'm sure you will make the decision that is right for you:wink:

Newbie here started my journey on March 2013 with a angiogram doct thought I had a clogged artery. Said I was just BIG,"FAT"So referred me to weight loss program. I started June 4, 2013. 12 week of classes dr appts & test. Finally finished Aug 20,21013.. I was finally approved to see the surgeon on Oct 17,2013 that day came & I got excited & anxious. seen the surgeon & we set a date Nov 5,2013 2 wk Preop was hard for me I was only losing inches." Now mind u my highest weight was in 2007 256, by 2009 I was down to 170. Happy me. Gained it back crushed my heart cause everytime I would work out I was at urgent care, & back up to 210 I cried, depressed." Being the one that does all the cooking I failed I cheated not once but twice during my preop diet so I realized I had to focus nov 4 hit & my last day of work for awhile so I went & weighed in 187. I'm scheduled for my lap band surgery on October 5th. I actually backed out of gastric bypass in June. I am wondering if its normal to be back and forth between the 2 surgeries. Im so confused. I feel like I want the band for the right reason, and I want the gastric bypass for the wrong reasons. I love the fact that with the bypass the weight just flies off, but I know that the risks are greater. I know that with the band, it will be a lot of work on my part. Please, someone tell me its normal to feel up in the air. :blushing:

open RNY gastric bypass? or lap?
Lovelycurves posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone had this done? What's the pros and cons of it over lapriscopic? My surgeon decided to leave the practice and now ill be seeing the other surgeon (which things happen for a reason) and he does both lap and open but prefers to do open. He's pretty honest and reather do open so, that's what I'm thinking of going with, partly because he sutures and they disolve with open instead of staples being in my body forever with lap. I just wanna hear if anyone has any thoughts on this. I know its one long cut (which I'm ok with) instead of 4-6 different little cuts. Anyways just curious because surgery is going to be in april and wanna decide before this on what may be better. I am definitely leaning towards the open though, also what's the down time for both? -
Hi....I'm scheduled to have my surgery in November. Already 3 months into this dance and have 3 more to go. I've only known one person who's been thru this and they LOVE IT ! The people at my nutritionist meetings are real nice but its hard to find anyone to talk to about silly stuff. Hopeing this site will help.

New to lap band surgery
screeden replied to us_plus3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different. For me, i took pain meds for 3 days, and it was over the counter, cause i am allergic to everything else the recovery was much better than i thought it would be, better than when i had my gallbladder removed which only had 3 incisions. Just watch what you eat, be very diligent in foods you choose as you don't want to PB or vomit, it is not pleasant at all! i just had my first vomiting episode this weekend in public at a restaraunt and very embarressing. LOL! just chew, chew, chew you foods. stay away from white breads and follow your doctors advice and orders. You will have to adjust your eating habits, but i didin't find this all that hard as i didn't want to do this for nothing. Seen friends who abused their band or gastic bypass and they gained it all back! I for one, will not abuse my band. It is my Tool, not a quick fix. It helps me get to where i need to be. It is one leg of a 3 legged stool, diet and exercise are the other two. It will not work if you don't do the other two. You will be fine! -
I am the same way. I am hardly ever hungry. I now "eat to live" not live to eat! I cam honestly say since my surgery on November 6, I have only been hungry a few tines. I lost all my weight 75 lbs in 7 months. No exercise just eating right. I am amazed when people post on here. Amazed! I had the surgery to lose weight! Like everyone else. But you have to want it to win it!

When Bad Habits Creep Back In After Weight Loss
Angela Sperry-Wenke posted a blog entry in Bypass Princess
I will be the first to admit that with getting back into the swing of life and work and a new love, it is easy to let those old bad habits creep back into our lives. We all fall victim to this in some sort or fashion and it is the one thing as weight loss patients that we fear. This is probably the one thing we fear the most that we will start up our old bad habits that got us to being overweight in the first place. I am about 16 months out and I am the first admit that I have allowed bad habits to sneak back into my life, not as bad as before surgery but regardless they did creep back in. My bad habits include soda, and occasional fast food. We call this the comfortable phase, you are now comfortable with how you have to live and eat post surgery and then life in general just happens and we can tend to slip back into those old habits. Alot of people suffer from this problem they lose all the weight then think “hey I can reward myself with a cookie, or stopping for fast food, or a soda” But I remember seeing a saying a long time ago that said we are not dogs, we do not need to reward ourselves with food and this is so true. Why do we always use food as a reward, or something to make us feel better. The truth is food is something we need to survive, it should not be used as reward. If you are thinking of having weight loss surgery, you need to understand that the surgery is not a cure all. Your mind is a powerful tool and is something we need to work on or it will sabotage our weight loss journey. The one thing I noticed is my bad habits creeping back in and I refuse to let them ruin my weight loss or rule my life. The most important thing to remember is that we will have trips and falls along the way, the difference is are you going to let this slips and falls define your new life or are you going to get up dust yourself off and start over. For me I am going back to putting protein first in my diet, being good about making sure I get my vitamins in and staying honest by providing a weekly food journal to give you all an idea on how much I eat and what I eat throughout the week. I'm on Day 7 post op Gastric bypass & I want a bagel. Not a whole bagel just a bite. I don't want any more protein shakes, no jello, no more cottage cheese, just a bite of a bagel. Is that normal ? Am I abnormal? Wasn't this surgery supposed to take away your hunger? Please share your experiences.

Do you miss being able to eat certain foods?
tabshan posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi! I'm scheduled for my gastric bypass next Monday, Feb. 27th and I have so many questions for someone who has gone through the surgery! Do you miss certain foods? Are you upset that you made such an extreme decision that leaves you unable to have certain things? I've changed my lifestyle and want to change it for good but I do indeed love certain foods and I'm afraid I'll be upset when I begin to deny myself certain things, or upset when I just physical can't have them anymore. Is this silly or is this a real concern? Please let me know your experiences. -
Just starting to explore possibilities
reeciecup posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been reading info on this site for a while...I am a previous gastric bypass patient with a total weight loss of 168 lbs..I had my bypass in January 2001..Kept the weight off pretty good until the last year and a half or so....I have gained about 20-25 pounds, and it scares me to death! I can eat A LOT now with very little restriction :hungry: ! Was wondering if there is anyone else who has been banded that previously had other WLS??? Also, anyone with experience with adolescents and the band?? I have a 14 year old daughter who struggles with her weight...just like I did, and I would like to explore the possibilities of the band for her, as well. Thank you all for sharing so openingly--I have enjoyed reading your posts over the last few weeks!! -
Anyone been to Dr. Taesun Moon, Horseheads, NY?
DLW replied to DLW's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Joan, I had my surgery November 5th. I had Dr. Moon. The surgery went fine except that he "nicked" my spleen and had to put a couple of stitches in it. I was in the hospital for 4 days. It was a slow go for me. I don't know if it was my age (50) or just that I just had a slow go at it. I couldn't lie flat in my bed for a week after. I had to sleep sitting up on the couch. That is expected though, the sleeping in a recliner or any other comfortable position you can fine. :-) I just now started losing some weight. I wasn't really following the program for the first month and a half and didn't lose anything. I've had 2 fills since then. I now have 5.5cc in a 10cc band. It has given me restriction. I lost 8 pounds last week (mostly Fluid I'm sure) and 2 pounds this past week. So, I'm starting to see results. I'm now following what Colleen has told me to do and keeping a journal of what I eat. Makes you more consious (sp?) of what you're doing. Anyway, I wish you well with your surgery and you will go through all of the feelings as the time approches. Scared, excited, nervous, can't wait, anxious and all the other normal fears. Don't worry, go in with a possitive attitude and a determination to make this thing work and you'll be fine. Just like me! :-) I had all the above emotions too and almost cancelled, but am glad I didn't. So far that is. haha Take care. Blessings, Dianne
