July 2021 Surgery People!

Soonlee_W, You can do this! You are so close to your surgery, this post op diet is tough, but temporary. Glad you are ready to follow the doctor's plan to prepare for your new VSG lifestyle. I'm here doing pre op with you! I don’t love it. I'm tired of my chocolate shakes & my beef broth was nasty, but I know it will be worth it! Today, I bought some vanilla & strawberry shakes to mix it up a little, and I will stick to chicken & veggie broth. Are you allowed the s.f. popsicles & s.f. jello? I added some protein (genepro) to the raspberry jello last night, it was something to look forward to at the end of the day. (And I am not a jello fan) Congratulations on the 4 pounds, and it is great to see you get back on track! -

I had my surgery a few days before you (currently on full liquid phase), and I agree it is hard to get them both in, especially that first week. I have been getting better at getting them in this second week, so it gets easier (at least until we have to start spacing out the water before and after meals). I try to drink my protein shakes between meals. So the first around 10 am and the second around 3pm or 8 pm. There were a few days were I couldn't stomach them, so on those days when that happened, I used Genepro and added 1/2 a serving to my soups or crystal light. Also sometimes th chocolate shakes can be overwhelming, so I mix 1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate. If I get 2 shakes or 2 servings of Genepro in that is 60 g of protein. I have been also eating Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container w/ 7 g of protein). For me, water has been the bigger challenge every day. Like you said, there aren't enough hours in the day to get it all in! Drinking Crystal Light or other sugar free drinks instead of water for a drink or two a day also helps me. I have a time marked motivation cup filled with water and need to have it near me at all times. I am always behind on where I should be each hour. 🤦♀️Luckily, the 2 shakes take care of 16 oz of water, otherwise I wouldn't have made the 64 oz goal yet. I did set a timer on my phone through baritastic, but it doesn't seem to work on my phone. I think there are water drinking reminder apps, so I will need to try that next week when I start soft foods. I'm sorry you are getting cramping, when I drink too quickly, I feel it sometimes, too, but it has gotten better. Wishing you luck, and looking forward to seeing other tips for the water, too! Keep us posted if you find tips that work for you!😊 -
Sleeved on 3/28 and doing pretty well. Today is my first days on pureed diet and I had a very soft scrambled egg this morning and it was great. Based on a sleeve group attendee I tried GENEPRO protein and it is tasteless just as he indicated. It's great to have this protein that I can mix with other stuff without adding a vanilla flavoring. I am finding my tastes on some things have changed, The Premier Protein water that had been my go to during liquid stage became unpalatable for me. Way to sweet and left a metallic type taste and even felt like a coating in my mouth. One day without it and thats all gone. Also I can no longer handle the chewable calcium tabs and multivitamin chewable that I was planning to use. They just taste way too sweet. But I'll find others.

I also use GENEPRO protein. It's odorless and tasteless and you can put it in almost anything. I ordered it off Amazon. The nutrition information says that one scoop is 30 grams of protein because of the way the body absorbs it.... But I only count it as 15 grams Also I have found that for me, putting the premier Protein Shakes over ice helps me drink it better because it's not as thick when some of the ice melts.

The need to eat until stuffed

@ShelterDog64 -- You mentioned earlier using unflavored GENEPRO in your morning coffee -- do you have to keep the temperature of the coffee at a certain temp to keep the Genepro from clumping? My morning coffee alone fills me up, but has no Protein so I'm wanting to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and I've seen that several folks use Genepro in their coffee. I just want to be sure before I order a tub of it. I use @@unjury Protein Powder to supplement my daily protein intake and love it, but it will clump if the Water temp is above 140 deg. (chicken Soup flavor). I make my own latte in the afternoon and have switched from hot to iced so I can use the unflavored @@UNJURY in the latte. This is working well so far, however, sometimes I want a hot latte in the afternoon. Thanks for any suggestions! -
Protein shake that's easy on the stomach?
soccermom2 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've tried premier protein shakes and genepro powder. I can't stand the taste premier and could even taste genepro though it's supposed to be tasteless. More than that they both made me so sick. Nausea and a burning pain in my stomach for the rest of the day after just a little bit of them. Anybody else have this issue? I'm nervous about getting enough protein in after surgery if I don't find something that's easier on my stomach. -
July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Double_Me replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Be careful what you ask for! You might get stuck with some failed experiments 😆 Smoked salmon turned out great and well-tolerated, I minced 1/4 of a shallot and 3-ish capers and folded it into 1 T of low fat cream cheese with a little lemon juice and salt. It was delicious, next time I might add some everything bagel seasoning! The sweet potato 'pie' was less successful. After baking, it turned out to be fairly rubbery and was difficult to get down. I think next time I'll just have the sweet potatoes mashed with the spices and genepro without a second bake. My stall finally broke today after a week! Lost 4 lbs in 2 days. -
July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Double_Me replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, my first post here! I'm a little late to the party, but I had my RnY Gastric Bypass surgery a little less than two weeks ago. After some initial discomfort due to the anesthesia I've been struggling to get my protein shakes down. I've fortunately been able to eat full liquids starting my second week which has been an enormous relief- I never thought I could enjoy cottage cheese with a little bit of salt so much! I've been making an attempt to cook and prep my meals and limit canned/processed foods. My go-to's have been the aforementioned cottage cheese w/ salt and low fat greek yogurt with a homemade cherry 'jam' (cherries cooked down with a little splenda, lemon juice, water, and blended). I also made a caramelized onion & rosemary whipped ricotta dip, which turned out to be delicious and tastes richer than it actually is. I also attempted to make a 'mango lassi' style protein shake with some freeze-dried mango, greek yogurt, skim milk, and genepro. It turned out to be too much for my stomach to handle, but I hope to try it again down the line... I love food and cooking, and I also still love eating... which, in part, is how I got to my high weight. So far the surgery has helped me be satisfied with a 2 oz serving, but undoubtedly this will become more difficult for me in the future. I even saw it this week, when I was saving the best looking bite of my yogurt for last. I could have put down the yogurt a little earlier, but I wanted to finish my portion for that last bite. This is obviously a habit I want to break, so best bites first from now on. Looking forward to reading your stories! My surgery was late in July, so a lot of you must be close to 1 month out. How's it going? -
Unflavored protien powder
chycky replied to LJDavenport's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would search GENEPRO on this site. I am just not a fan of their weird science. I stand by unjury starter kit it is how I fell in love with their chicken broth. Have only tried their unflavored, chicken, and chocolate. For price and Protein comparison I am sticking with isopure on unflavored (25 vs 21) and premier for chocolate (30g) but love chicken. It has more sodium so I just have one per day. -

I have a fruit smoothie almost every morning. Handful of spinach, frozen tropical fruit, almond milk, half a banana or avocado and a scoop of Genepro. It's the only way I can get liquid protein in. I follow dr v. Recipe Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -
Is eating fruit okay?
*Lexie* replied to pinkbunies's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor approved fruit but just warned against any with seeds like strawberries which might irritate. Most mornings I have either a scrambled egg (or eggbeaters) with a scoop of sausage cooked into it and a small amount of cheddar cheese on top. It's a good Protein rich Breakfast. If I'm in a hurry, I have a hot chocolate with a scoop of GENEPRO Protein powder. I eat beef Jerky as a snack. I don't need to drink as many Protein shakes if I have some beef jerky. And it's delicious. -
I ordered my unjur.y yesterday, since I'm just finishing up my vanilla Cream Protein mix at home. It was really good...but like $35 a jug, unless I buy 3 jugs. I had bought 2 chocolate and 1 vanilla cream. The chocolate is gross. Maybe once I can mix a banana in with it, it might be alright. But anyway--I hear the unjur.y is amazing! So you got the unflavored one, right? I ordered the vanilla. I still have some of my unflavored GENEPRO protein, so I can keep using that in my broth for now. Glad you had a pretty good day out! And great job planning ahead, knowing your mom was going to be eating a chicken sandwich! (mouth watering again....LOL) I LOVE LOVE your Wonder Woman thermos!!!

Hi everyone! I'm Morgan, and I was sleeved on 12/5. I'm about 3.5 weeks out. The first day was ROUGH. I pretty much vomited from the time I woke up until the next morning. I'm doing well now, and just really trying to adjust to this new normal. I am having trouble getting all of my protein in, though. I do really love Genepro. I hear a lot of people mix it with coffee, so I might try that. I can't tolerate flavored protein shakes (my pouch HATES) artificial sweeteners, Sylvia, Trulia, and sugar alcohols. Premier Protein had been the worst so far for me. Are there any other options out there that actually taste decent? -
I eat sugar free pudding with GENEPRO mixed in. I get yumminess and my Protein in. DS surgery 12/14/2016

I am having trouble getting to my protein quota set by my doctor; at least 75-85 grams per day. I have been mixing protein powder with protein drinks just to get more in the mornings...but, boy oh boy, the calories add up. My morning routine comes to about 516 calories. That's one serving of Chobani yogurt with 1 packet of unflavored protein power and one Lean Body protein shake with one packet of unflavored protein powder. Those three items add up to more than half of the 800 calories I've been trying to stick to as advised for these first few months. I also take a handful of vitamins which must be worth at least 5-10 calories each. Wondering if anyone knows anything about Genepro Genetic Tri-Protein Peptide. It says it contains 30 grams of protein (instanized peptide whey, hydrolyzed whey, and genetic hexapeptide protein. Is this the kind of protein I want and need? One thing nice is that the serving size (one scoop) is much smaller than the packets like Unjury or Jarrrow Formulas, which I have been using. Plus it's only got 15mg of sodium. But is it the "right kind" of protein???? Thanks to anyone who can whey in on this topic -
Well, now don't do as I do but...I measured out my SWEET CREAM and my Half and Half. Make my espresso and the total calories are 140. I also add a Tablespoon of GENEPRO. So my total Protein is drum roll!!! 34grams of protein. So again it is a win- win for me because I would drink my coffee anyhow.

@ LisaGB: First I was 58 (just turned 58) when I had my surgery and my life has changed drastically!!! So don't worry one bit that you think you might be too old....like most people on here our only regret is that this surgery wasn't available when we were younger...but believe me, I am making the most out of every day now!!! If you are looking for inspiration, read some blogs...they were so helpful to me. I kept a blog every Sunday for the first year so you can see a little what to expect. You can see it at http://www.queenofcrop.com/about/%C2'> Then when you read that page you can decide if you want to start at the beginning which I recommend. I started writing again a few months ago, but it is in a direction that is not for everyone....the first year is all about the weight loss. For protein powder, I started using one that was recommended here and it is far, far superior to any other in my opinion. I cannot tell you how many PP I threw out!!!! This one has NO FLAVOR and 30 grams of protein. You can order it from Amazon. It's called GENEPRO Molecular Tri-Protein Peptide. Don't waste you money on other things. As far as exercising.....start slow...get some weights and just use them when you are sitting down. I have read about many others who were on walkers and after the first month they had a Walker Burning Party!!!! You will do just fine and I suspect your diabetes will be history too!

First bad meal post op!
mbrinmn replied to amysd1009's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For all of you who don't like, or cannot eat, Protein shakes, try GENEPRO. I bought it on amazon.com. One little scoop (about a rounded tablespoon) is all you need to get 30 g of protein. It is Water soluble, just like Benefiber or Miralax. You can put it in just about everything and not taste it...your morning yogurt, cottage cheese, mash it in with enough hamburger for one patty and grill it, put it on your salad, etc. The possibilities are endless. It does add a slight flavor to water, which isn't a bad taste, it just a funny taste. Now I mix it in with my daily Sobe Lifewater or Fuze Slenderize water. I really feel less tied to protein shakes (powdered or canned) since I have found this great product. -

@@brighteyes64, congrats on getting sleeved! I've heard lots of people mention genepro protein powder, it's supposed to be flavorless & full of protein. Maybe you can use it in broths or add it to crystal lite. Check w/your doctor first to see if it's recommended. I didn't hear about it until after I was in phase IV (regular food). So I personally never tried it. Good luck. It gets easier. -

@@nancynew have you tried Genepro? It is a "tasteless" powder that has 30g of protein for just 1 tbsp. I start my day off with it mixed with decaf coffee and a little SF creamer -
thanks, girl i think you're safer doing it your way. i don't eat and i said screw protein too. i take a bite of my sons food and then i drink water and juice mixed all day. im basically on a no nutrition liquid diet. yesterday for the first time in forever i made a concoction of oj with pulp and water with genepro and it was ok, i just try to keep my fluids up. i had half a snack wrap for dinner one day and the other half for breakfast, it didnt do anything to me so i guess il get another one tonight. i also had stew beef earlier today and i was nauseous so i know i wont do it again. amy, im almost 6ft lol

I use Genepro, it has 30 g of protein in a pretty small scoop! I found it easier to get my protein in after surgery with this vs others with only 10g/scoop. 👍🏼

Day 5 and feeling GREAT! I’m telling you, the gas pain sucks but once you get past that...woo-hoo! I’m not hungry at ALL though. So trying my best to get my water and protein in. One tip, my NUT suggested Unjury unflavored protein powder so I got a sample pack of that at first. It’s ok, but a lot of powder to mix in for just 10 grams of protein? No bueno. I found another brand at GNC. GENEPRO. It’s fantastic! I used it during my pre-op and it’s saving me during post op (since I can’t drink as much broth as I could before.) There are 30 g of protein in just one scoop AND the scoop is 3 x smaller than many others! It mixes great in a little lukewarm water, then I just add it to my broth or juice. Getting that much protein in a serving during the early post op days is wonderful!!

Is there anything you wish you'd been told pre-op?
Everything replied to Pippa1703's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you’re asking a broader question but I’m going to answer in terms of what I’ve experienced in the first week post op. I should’ve had a more realistic picture of what the first week would look like post surgery. The diet they gave me advanced too quickly for me. If it weren’t for these items I would not have made it through week one as comfortably! When I couldn’t get the vitamins down I had the patches. When I couldn’t get the minimum water AND protein shakes down I had the protein water. When the only “food” I could possibly consume was broth, these K-cups were quick, easy and helped me get in a little extra protein. (And the Genepro is probably just good to have all around. You can add it to the cream soups when you’re ready for extra protein.) Most people probably knew this stuff beforehand but I learned all this the hard way. In the hospital a few things and I really appreciated bringing were my extension cord, my heated blanket, robe and a change of pajamas. I actually brought full blown make up bag with eyeshadow palettes and everything which I didn’t even touch. The only cosmetic or toiletries I used was my toothbrush and toothpaste! Comparatively I feel like I’ve had a more difficult first seven days than others but I have had zero regrets and no regrets phase. I went in after doing a lot of self education and knew it would be challenging. I’m excited for the prospect of looking and feeling better and things are improving daily! I think you will find the same is true for you.
