    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

I started eating clean as an act of self preservation. My allergies were out of control and I spent more time fighting and recuperating from allergy attacks than out and enjoying life. I also became a fat vegetarian. It's taken me a long time but I follow really basic rules: Bring a magnifying glass with you to the market Anything that says,'light, fat free, diet' or similar is either lying or fake and heavily processed. Try to buy foods that have 10 ingredients or less and/or do not require a science degree to understand the ingredients. Avoid most foods that come in a box or a can. Frozen foods with no additives are your friend.
  2. I choose the sleeve because: I wanted a slower weight loss I didn't want to reroute with bypass Lap band didn't seem like a good fit my BMI I was told it might alleviate some of my other chronic conditions I'm vegetarian with multiple food & medicine allergies. I thought a malabsorptive procedure would be too limiting
  3. I'm a vegetarian with food allergies. I always bring my own food. If I can trust the person who made it, I may partake of a bit of salad. You can always just say, "Sorry I'm on a diet".

I find no joy in eating

Nope, still love eating only now I like the challenge of packing good nutrition and taste into a smaller portion. I never had the luxury of not thinking about what I was eating. I've had food allergies and been a vegetarian for far too long for that. Not paying attention could be lethal for me.

    Beans question

How far out are you? The chili sounds fine and Beans are a good source of Protein. However the nutritional breakdown of various beans makes a big difference. For example 1 cup of black beans has 116 gms carbs, 4 gms fat and 17 gm sodium & 39gm protein. Whereas 1 cup of chickpeas has 121gms carbs, 12gms fat, 48gm of sodium for that same 39 gms of protein. Neither is a bad thing, especially since it is a complex carb, especially when you are a vegetarian like me and need the protein. However, you also have ground turkey and ham in that chili so I'm pretty sure you aren't a vegetarian. In short, maybe limit your daily serving of that chili to once a day.

    Local support group

Thanks BLERgirl for that helpful information!!!!!!! I am also a vegetarian, have been for 30 yes. Hope to see you at a Saturday meeting soon. I am always available for support. My Dr. Left Temple, weight loss slow just needed more group support. I am on Facebook. Again thanks
  7. Amy I agree with not going out to eat. Just with my kids it's hard. I can't stop taking them out just cause my diet needs to change. This is my plan: Well 1st my grandpa died of weight related issues and died at home when my dad was 5. My other grandpa died of weight related issues before I was born. I don't want that for my kids. Don't want to die at home or while they are so young. Yes I want to lose weight to feel better and all but it's more about my kids. I am doing this for them. So I can be a better role model for them and be more active with them.. So back to my plan: When I take them out to eat I will bring a healthy meal for my self. I will take the dogs for longer walks and more often....list goes on. I will need to find healthier vegetarian meals as well. If anyone has any tips please offer them.

    Too quick?

I think a nutritionist is good if it's a good one that is experienced in bariatric care. My nutritionist lead a very helpful class and has been a good sounding board. However prior to having WLS I saw 3 different nutritionist. Two were awful. One kept telling me to eat a little bit chicken. The only asked how long I had been a vegetarian and said she usually tries to talk people of out of it. The 3rd was lovely. She practiced a healthy blend of holistic and Western medicine and had no issues at all with plant based diets. Unfortunately she was also the most expensive and I had to stop seeing her.
  9. My questions were different. I wanted to know if they had issues with vegetarian diets? Could they work around my many food and medicine allergies? Could they operate without blood? Everything else I had checked into before deciding on this doc and/or were answered during the seminar.

    My nutrition seems off-balanced

What stage ae you are? I was on full liquids the first 2 weeks and I had small amounts of non fibrous fruits and veg. I simply liquefied them in my nutra bullet. This is also why those vitamins and supplements ate important. What items are you allowed? Are you meeting all your protein and fluids goals yet? These things may also be playing a part in the light headedness you are feeling. As a vegetarian I understand missing the crunch of fresh fruit and veg however at 3 weeks out your should be able to get the nutrients from these foods in liquid form.

    Have you tried this broth?

Can you take a picture of the ingredients? Did they have any vegetarian friendly flavors?
  12. Hi All, i am new to the PCOS forum. I was diagnosed with PCOS 15 years ago. I went thru fertility treatment to have my son. I have pretty severe facial hair and insulin resistance. I was sleeved on Dec 22nd. My weight loss has been slow compared to some others. I have so far lost 15 lbs including preop diet. I am a vegetarian and so is very hard to go too low carb as i have to rely on dairy and legumes for my protien and eat veggies. So I am thinking about 40gms per day......my biggest frustration at this point in addition to the weight is facial hair! Can anyone share if losing weight after sleeve has decreased or stopped facial hair?

Post op help needed - hunger

As a vegetarian your carbs are going to be higher. As long as they are coming from complex carbs like beans and veg., don't worry about it. It's the simple, processed, white carbs like Pasta, rice, flour etc... that you need to watch. It's one of the reasons why I'm not doing breads or crackers until I hit goal. If you want to follow me I'm on Myfitnesspal as Milaxx.

Post op help needed - hunger

I was sleeved on dec 22nd, i am just past 2 weeks and i am experiencing hunger too! I am already on omreprazole once a day........not sure how to differentiate head hunger vs. real hunger :-(, so when i feel hunge I sip decaf iced tea...... So please dont worry, seems to be happening to a lot of people I am able to eat 4 oz pureed food at one sitting. Is that normal or too much? And when we say contain carbs to less than 30g that includes evrything from milk, yoghurt and beans? I am a vegetarian so not sure how to really control carbs under 30 gms!!
  15. I love grits but I haven't tried them yet. When I was allowed to have them I didn't because it wasn't enough Protein. I'm vegetarian so I have to make my meals count.
  16. Awaiting my surgery date as we speak, and no, I could NOT do this on my own. Highest weight 389 (!), then did a dr-supervised diet (extreme protein/no carbs) and lost almost 100 lbs over about 1.5 years -- but still had 100+ to go -- and I just could NOT be starving myself and eating dry chicken any longer (I'm actually now a vegetarian; can't stand the sight of meat because of that diet...) Anywho, over about 6 months to a year, I gained almost 40 lbs back and finally got insurance that w/cover surgery -- been on a mission to get all requirements done and now my application is in the hands of BCBS - So do it on my own, as in, do it and keep it off FOREVER? Without surgery, no way, no how --

How was your 5:2 day today?

So, the best thing I learned at the NUT appointment I went to in December what how the hunger receptors work. They sit at the bottom and top of the new banana shaped stomach. Eating dense protein first will put a "firmer" pressure on those receptors at the bottom. I can't believe the difference it made when I switched to eating my salmon first then the lettuce rather than eating it as a salad with meat sprinkled all about. Anyway, the idea is that you get several ounces of dense protein (I have no idea how this works for vegetarians - but for me it means meat/poultry/fish/seafood) sorta solid in there. You are supposed to stop when no longer hungry, but what I wonder is if you are eating 2-3 bites and it is just enough to temporarily tap those hunger receptors without really creating lasting satiety. I am not exactly following it, but this NUT really pushed 5 mini meals - all of them starting with dense protein, adding a bit of veggies etc. and eating just enough to keep from getting overly hungry before the next meal. She felt I don't eat often enough which is leading to eating too much at one sitting (some people become grazers, but i seem to return to volume eating). She said max I should ever eat is 1.5 cups and of course that depends on what the food is - I can't eat that much dense protein for sure but I think I could eat that much in crackers, cheese and wine....

    Old and new memories.

As a vegetarian I'm not a fan of PETA, but I support my local SPCA. They do wonders in my community. Stormie was spayed & microchipped for free thanks to them. She gets her yearly vaccinations for just $15 thanks to them.
  19. I do carbs because I am vegetarian. A lot of my protein comes from complex carbs like beans. However I avoid simple, white carbs. I also do natural sugars such as raw honey, raw organic sugar, coconut sugar and occasionally maple syrup (mostly honey these days). I am allergic to most artificial sugars and good dyes so I avoid any product with that in it.

    cookbooks?

My cook books are all vegetarian except for my ancient copy of The Joy of Cooking. I did just find a Vegan blog run by someone who had bypass that made me really excited. I know I need to stay vegetarian at least until I hit maintenance, but I would like to go vegan one day. The cook book I like is called Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryan Terry

    Dinner Frustration

Hard to explain but I understand, eating can be a social sharing experience in a way I think. Even family has kind of been weirded out I guess by the little I eat. I see it different than being bothered by what I eat. People would love me to eat a vegetarian or even vegan dish, they just want me to eat. Ha - .

    Dinner Frustration

Why would someone worry about what you are eating? Even when I was the sole vegetarian in a group of carnivores it's never been an issue.

    Dinner Frustration

As a single person I always have leftovers. But as a vegetarian with food allergies I've always checked online before choosing a restaurant. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. I'm even considering doing restaurant in my city next month.

    Carbs carbs carbs

@@queensleever05 - No I didn't. I used CVS whey Protein, Prosource no carb liquid Protein and Orgain organics RTD & powder form. I'm vegetarian so I still do some dairy like yogurt and cheeses, but I don't eat any animal flesh.

    Carbs carbs carbs

I'm vegetarian. I do low carb, I do not do no carb. Instead I look for complex carbs and avoid processed, "white carbs" that you get from breads, pastas and rice. I try to eat whole foods as much as possible.
