  1. I opted for Gastric Bypass surgery, knowing it's not recommended to "consume tobacco" ever again. But cannabis is not tobacco, And vaping is not smoking. 3 months post-op I vape 0mg nicotine and I also have a CBD/THC vape pen for when I experience any pain or nausea. It's medicinal. No one can convince me otherwise. This podcast addresses OP questions.
  2. Hello good people! Today July 3rd, 2023 I had my surgery. I’m a little disappointed. I am glad I had the surgery, but due to my pancreas was positioned wrong. The Duo Switch was turned into a Sleeves. I am now wondering was it worth it after all. My surgeon told my partner that they going to have to CAT scan on my stomach/pancreas to ensure it’s not a cancer issue. I am bombed to find out I’m in this much pain and did not get what I thought would be done. Also, for me to know that my weight loss may not be as successful as I put my mind. The surgeon may have to go back in later and work around my issue to complete the Duo Switch.😭😭 I read so many article where people had the sleeve and then had the bypass done. I just want to be healthy and happy without GERD, now I do not know what to expect. I did a lot of my research for the Duo-Switch. Anybody had total research with the sleeve ONLY? 😔

Lap Band: Am I Crazy to Consider It?

If you won't consider GS or DS, why not bypass? I got the sleeve and had A LOT of complications. I just got a revision from sleeve to bypass on June 28th, so there ARE things that can be done for the sleeve if there's an issue. Why is the bypass off the table?
  4. I put off revision for gerd for many years. I'm so sorry I waited so long. I did so much damage. I feel so much better now. I'm sorry you are having a hard time this time around. But as others said, for some, it is very normal to have a difficult beginning but yours was exacerbated by a blockage.[emoji22] I think you made the right choice and had to get rid of the severe reflux and gerd. You will, with time, live a much more normal and painless life. Hang in there.

Will I ever enjoy food again?

I was the same way and, to some extent, still am. My bypass surgery was 5/24. I lived on Oikos greek yogurt for about 5 or 6 weeks because other foods, no matter how pureed (YUCK!!!) or how gently cooked, would get stuck right in the middle of my chest. I would generally do a lot of pacing and deep breathing until the pain and the danger of throwing up had passed. My doctor said it was perfectly normal and would get better with a little time. As usual, he was correct. I still can't eat most meat, though some have started going down without pain. It gets a little better each day. I rarely ever ate because I enjoyed food but more because of stress, boredom and habit. Foods I used to enjoy, like pizza, don't do it for me any more. I don't even particularly like french fries now. Never thought that would happen. I do still miss my sliced apples. I will continue to try them occassionally. Just give it time. As you heal, you will be able to enjoy a broader range of food.

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

I just rejoined! I’m in the process now for sleeve to bypass primarily due to regain, but also to be able to get off acid reducers.

How to locate a surgeon who does DS

I am in NYC and Dr. Cheema from NYU Langone Brooklyn does the SADI. You may want to ask about the SADI-S rather than the DS. The DS is old and complex. The current form of it, post-sleeve, is the SADI (Single anastomosis duodeno–ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy) and you may get a better response in Seattle asking that.
  8. Hi! I had the sleeve at NYU with Dr. Shweck in Aug 2018. I got my gallbladder removed May 2019. As I did regain 80 lbs, I consulted again (as recommended by my vascular doctor). I went to NYU Brooklyn and spoke to Dr. Cheema and he recommended the SADI over Gastric Bypass because I am a smoker and there can be a high rate of ulcers. I am scheduled for 07/26/23 and I am very high risk so being admitted day before. Dr. Cheema and the endoscopy both showed my sleeve was perfect still and there was absolutely no need to redo it. The restriction is still there, just now we are adding the malabsorption which is typically stage 2 anyways. As per Dr. Cheema, the SADI is a safer and newer version of the DS with slightly less intestine bypassed and it connects the sleeve directly. With the DS, there are 2 cuts for connections created to bypass. With the sleeve done already, it is much less of a risk and still goes straight to malabsorption. You will need high A D E K vitamins plus iron and calcium and B12. You will experience different symptoms then just the sleeve such as increased dumping likely for sugar and fat. You will still be restricted to eat small meals and you will still need a ton of protein. Until I get mine, that is the best I can tell you. Look up different articles on DS and SADI and ask your doctor specifically which procedure is being done and what are the cons. Good luck!
  9. I would avoid gastric sleeve simply because post operative GERD is very common afterward. I had never had any type of reflux until after my sleeve. I eventually had a revision from sleeve to bypass and it helped. I wanted to ask you about esophageal spasms and nutcracker esophagus. I’m in the process of having a diagnosis determined for the pain I have when I eat anything with any kind of texture or “substance” to it. This has been going on for about 9 months (following my sleeve to bypass revision.) I also have esophageal spasms that hurt so bad I feel like I’m going to pass out. Does any of this sound familiar to you and how long did it take for you to be diagnosed? Are you taking any medications that help? Any information you can share would be greatly appreciated!!!
  10. Hey we are surgery buddies. I did my revision from sleeve to bypass on the 28th after regaining all the weight plus a little bonus. Hoping for a better this time around. All the best!

Lap Band: Am I Crazy to Consider It?

So sorry for the loss of your sister & I understand why this would be influencing your considering lap band. There are reasons why so few surgeons do lap bands anymore even with the supposed advances. All surgeries have risks & potential for post surgical complications. Weight loss surgery risks & complications though are quite low in comparison to many other commonly done surgeries.(I remember reading the appendectomies stats are higher.) Ask your surgeon for the stats & experiences with their patients across all weight loss surgeries. . Bypass might be an option as @Jeanniebug said it is possible to reverse. Like sleeve, the average weight loss with bypass is about 65% of the weight you have to lose. It’s only 50% with lap band. (Remember averages only give you an idea. Some lose more while others less as many factors influence your loss.) But you have to do what is most right for you. All the best whatever you decide.

Lap Band: Am I Crazy to Consider It?

I'm sorry to hear about your sister. I had a bypass, so I still have all my parts. Technically, it's reversible, if something goes wrong. I don't know much about the latest advances in lap band technology. But, if you and your doctor think it's a good option for you, then I'd say go for it. You can always have it removed, if it doesn't work.

    Is V8 Ok

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to resurrect it because I just had my revision from sleeve to bypass 4 days ago and I'm drinking regular low sodium v8 (not the fusion) and it's been totally fine. Tastes great and it's a super good way to get in veggies when you're not allowed to have them yet. I noticed the consistency of it didn't bother me at all. Just wanted to put this out there, in case anyone else was wondering.
  14. I had something similar after my bypass from having the iv in for 3 days. It was a very painful solid bump right under the skin where the iv was. It was about an inch long so not huge. I asked my dr and he said it was clot and that it would go away on its own but to use warm compresses on it to help it feel better and heal faster. It took several weeks for it to go away but it did eventually fade. I don't know if that's what you have though so I can't tell you if you should worry about your spot or not. I hope it gets better for you soon!
  15. Was wanting to know if the surgeon who did your bypass also did your sleeve.
  16. First of all let me say thank you. This is my second time around I had gastric sleeve in 2012 which was very successful I lost over 200 pounds and have kept most of it off. Because of GERD and severe reflux issues, I had an hitial hernia repair and revision from gastric sleeve to bypass. I am little over one week out and I am struggling. I have to be readmitted to the hospital for blockage in my small intestine because of swelling. I just don’t remember the first surgery being this hard. I am in phase two which is puréed foods and I am regretting my decision please help. Does it get easier I feel so restricte!!
  17. Greeting everyone! I want to know how long after the roux-en-y gastric bypass was it before you were able to return back to work? I am so excited with mix with mix feeling. More excited than anything. My surgery is July 3 rd, 2023.
  18. Hello all, I'm new here. I had gastric bypass on Halloween of 2022 and the past 2 days I have pain on and off on my left side under my rib. Mostly when bending a certain way, laughing or sometimes just randomly. Sometimes it's a burning sensation and sometimes it's a sharp pain. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Or what it might be. I've been googling my symptoms but so many different things come up. I was thinking ulcer in my unused stomach portion?? Not really sure.
  19. there shouldn't be a need to re-do the sleeve - it's already been done. The sleeve historically was part 1 of the DS procedure, which used to often be done in two stages. They'd first create a sleeved stomach, and a few months later, they'd come back in and bypass most of the small intestine. Some people lost enough weight with just part 1 that they didn't end up doing part 2. Thus, the sleeve surgery was born.
  20. I'm a bypass patient. I was told I could take anything the size of a pencil eraser or smaller as soon as I got home from the hospital (which covered all but two of my pills - I had to wait 2-3 weeks before trying those - and it did "work" - I was able to swallow everything perfectly after the 2-3 week wait on the two larger ones)

    8 months post op Questions

The reason I answered the way I did was because of the large number of posts from people who are frustrated, disappointed, angry or think they are failing because they compare themselves with others, set unrealistic goals or timelines, think they are losing slowly, don’t reach their goal, etc. I didn’t want you to fall into the comparison trap too. I had a lower starting weight so had less to lose than you do. Am shorter & likely older. I also had a sleeve. I lost my goal of 31kg (68lbs) at 6 months. (Lost another 11odd kilos over the next 11 months bringing my total to a loss of about 92lbs.) At 8 months I’d lost 37kg (81lbs). So comparing my stats with @ms.sss & @summerseeker you can see how different loss can be over the same time period - a range of more than 2 stone which can be two or three dress sizes as an example. I may have lost more by month 8 if I wasn’t consciously increasing my calories to try to stop my loss. I may have lost less if I had more or longer stalls or lost nothing if my body decided that my goal weight was my new set point & best weight. PS: My total loss made me an outlier. The average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you’re to lose to put you in a healthier range for both bypass & sleeve. I lost 135%. I had a couple of very short stalls, less than a week in length, so my rate of loss was fairly steady, gradually slowing, with just little hiccups along the way.
  23. Congratulations @BypassDiva2023. I’m so glad you’ve finally had your revision surgery. Praying for a much smoother journey for you this time. NSAIDS are always on the forever no list post surgery. However, some surgeons do allow their use after a period of time with a sleeve which may be why you are surprised with the instruction with your bypass. My surgeon allowed me to have them after two years because I didn’t take them regularly but he still gave me strict instructions: half dose & not consecutive days. The swallowing pill advice seems to be varied across surgeons & surgeries. Did the same surgeon do your bypass as sleeve? Maybe they’re treading more carefully because of your history.

    Curious About Post-Op Days

The first two weeks after my bypass I was a little sore. I do have a higher pain tolerance so all I needed was over the counter Tylenol. I think I was having a hard time not being able to lift and hold my 3-year-old. That lasted for about 6 weeks. The tenderness seemed to go away between the 6-8 weeks mark. By the 2nd week I was trying not to overdo it. By 3-4 weeks I got this burst of energy. I found that it was very helpful to wear the binder when I was up and moving around. I still from time to time use it and I am 4 months post op. The first big poo is a nightmare that no one at the drs office tells you about. I literally birthed a horse pellet 3 times in the first 8 weeks. I found taking a dose of miralax daily and 2 Colace a day has helped with getting hard stools. This was told to me ok to do by the nurses from Weight Management as well as the Surgeon. But walk as much as you can as soon as the nursing staff let you get up. It helps a bunch.
  25. Hello All, I had my bypass on Valentines Day this year. So, I'm roughly 4 months post op. Prior to my surgery I was taking Wellbutrin 100mg 3 times a day. I haven't had any weight gaining issues with this medication. It actually had been helping me not want to overeat a bunch. Recently my Dr decided to add Zoloft 50mg daily in addition to my Wellbutrin. I haven't started taking it yet because I am having mixed feelings about it. I know I need something to help with the irritability I've had an increase within addition to what I am taking now. I do trust my Dr and him saying that he thinks that I am a good candidate for the medication, and he hasn't seen any weight issues ect, I am though however terrified if I start taking this medicine, I will start gaining weight back. So, my question is those who have been on this medication, did you have any side effects and or weight gain with this medication? And if so, how much weight did it cause you to gain back?
