I realize this is a personal decision, I honestly do not know what route to go... I think BP better long term results, but it seems so drastic and I really worry about dumping syndrome and complications as well as my ability to really follow better eating habits.... I think having negative consequences of dumping might help with that, but wonder if I would decide to live with the pain just to satisfy my craving...... the sleeve seems like a more natural way to continue with life..... my doctor at first thought sleeve but the more we talk think the bypass offer me a little bit of extra help.... people use to die from this procedure and I realize that's not the case now but it scares the crap out of me... I know I want surgery I just don't know which 1 to choose... they're successes and failures with each I know it is my own choices.... socially I'd like to be able to drink a beer on occasion if I want to you know, I don't want to be on a date order something and take two bites eat like a bird either, but normal kids size person would be good I just don't know what to expect.... I have a friend who had bypass and she's great results but would have done sleeve but insurance would not pay for that, her mom had it also it is have the dumping effects but not as great results.... very stressful choice and it's a lot of money either way I go.....thx for thoughts between two surgeries

I am having a very hard time loosing any weight since the weather has gone into this deep freeze. I had my bypass a year &a day ago & I have been lucky the weight has been coming off steadily for this year with the infill now. Two weeks ago I got on the scale & was thrilled, I had broken through the 250's & weighed in at 248lbs, I stood on the scale & cried I was so excited. When I weighted in this week, the rotten thing said I was 258!! How did I gain 10lbs in a week??? I do mother & eat candy or sweets unless it is sugar free or under 10 grms of sugar. The only thing I can think of is I really haven't been out of bed in over a week, I have chronic RA &Fibromyalgia, & I have been in so much pain I haven't been able to move ( my RA is so bad that I am disabled from it & take pretty heavy duty pain killers) . Sorry this is so long & I sound like I'm whining, I guess I just need some advice/encouragement/etc. from people who have been through or -Maybe I just need to vent I don't know. A little help please?

Arthritis and Fibromialgia Pain
Jean Hitchcock Dorman posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I am in hopes that someone out there can help me with this In 2004 I was diagnosed with Paranoid Depression and have been on anti Depressants for that since then. In 2006 and at 313pounds I had Gastric Bypass surgery my lowest weight was 167 and slowly I began to gain weight til I hit 280 I am now losing weight again down to 268 but I have had to retire from my job driving school bus for 11 years I have been diagnosed with Fibomialgia and I have arthritis in every joint including my neck. The dr. has has to switch my depression meds because my pain was over taking my anti depression meds. This is my Question there are so many meds out there that gastric bypass patients like me cannot take and the dr has no idea what to give me. I feel like I am screamming and nobody will hear or help me. What can I do and any advise on what I can take. I have tried OTC Patches OTC rubs. All anyone says is take Tylonal -
Have you discussed this with your surgeon? Depending on why you have GERD, he/she may recommend bypass surgery instead. I did not have GERD prior to surgery, had wicked wicked heartburn within 2 weeks but discovered it was due to lactose sensitivity. Since reducing my milk product intake, I have had zero problems

Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've just finished my pre-op stuff last month(november). I started my whole process back in june. I was in no hurry at all. Back in august Dr. Neff asked when i would like to set a date for, I decided to go with Jan. 7th. I found out that respitory was the longest to get done. During my sleep study I found out i had severe sleep apnea so the pulm dr. wouldnt clear till i used my machine for 30 days and had to get a chest xray and a lung fuction test. I used Dr. Obergon for pulm. But depending on how fast you get your appointments you can get in probaly 4-5 months -
About 10 years ago my husband saw in article in the news about the LAP Band. He knew how depressed I was about my weight and encouraged me to go to a seminar. I guess I wasn't ready for that yet at only a meager 245 lbs on my 5-2 frame. I think they were performing clinical trials here in San Diego at that time. Now, here I am at 280. After multiple attempts with Optifast, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Fen/Phen, Meridia, Circuit Clubs, SouthBeach, Scarsdale, Zone, etc. But you all know this story for yourselves. I'm currently enrolled in a nutritional class at Kaiser as their prerequisite for gastric bypass. But this surgery scares the holy crap out of me. I don't like the idea of rearranging my insides and the possibilities of nutritional complications - if I survive all the other potential risks. Of course all surgery has risks. And the biggest one for me on this (LAP Band) one is that I won't lose enough weight. But I'm jumping ahead. I recently discovered that an old friend was having this surgery. So I'm pouring over the statistics and find the LAP Band a much more desirable surgery. So we'll see. Good luck to all of you. I'll certainly continue to journal my journey.

Fill #1 - 3/6/07 - 2.2cc's Fill #2 - 4/17/07 - 3.0cc's Fill #3 - 7/6/07 - 3.5 cc's (I think it was only 2.5cc's because when I went back for fill #4, he could only w/draw 1.8 cc's) Fill #4 - 7/20/07 - filled me back to 3.0 ccs - He should have filled me more! Fill #5 - 8/17/07 - 3.4cc's Fill #6 - 10/08/07 - filled me to 3.8cc's - the restriction I've ever had,but still could eat big bites of food, so I figured I needed to be tighter. Fill #7 - 11/21/07 filled to 4.0 cc's. By the evening could not hold anything down, not even my saliva. PBing all night - horrilble experieince 11/23/07 - Unfill - Got unfill and because of the swelling and all the PBing, doc took my fill down to 3.0cc's. NO RESTRICTION AGAIN Fill #8 - 1/18/08 Went in and the doc filled me back up to just right under 4.0, according to Flouro, it was perfect. Well, by next morning, could not hold down saliva again, ended up back in hospital and the Doc had to take me back down to 3.0. grrrr. Now I'm back where I was in November, barely restriction again. Fill #9 - 3.5 cc's - was tight for about a week, now feel lose again. grrrr, still have "some" restriction, just not quite enough! Next fill scheduled for 4/7/08 - I hate that it takes sooooooo long to get in to see the fill doc.

I Finally Have A Surgery Date For Gastric Bypass
channing28105 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally got a Surgery Date for my Gastric bypass I am getting my Gastric bypass on Tuesday July 24, 2012. I start on a Full liquid Diet on July 10, 2012 where I have whey Protein drinks at Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can have some Soups like tomato , Cream of mushroom Soup and I can have some pudding and if I want something soldi I can have Carrots, tomatoes and Celery. I have my Pre-Op appointment on June 25, 2012. I would like prayers and I would like to have a Diet Buddy and I will want to know what to do 1. What Should I do If I am having Vomiting that lasts for several hours 2. What Should I Do If I am having Diarrhea for several hours I know that you can experience these things after having Gastric Bypass. I have some more questions: 1. If you have vomiting that lasts for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? 2. If you have diarrhea for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? Right now I Vomit with my Heartburn or GERD. Has anyone ever had Heartburn or GERD where they Vomited with their Heartburn or GERD? Did you do things like Belch with your Heartburn or GERD? I am looking for email pen pals that have gone through Gastric Bypass that can be my diet buddy that I can share my weight with. I am wanting to try to lose some weight on my own before the pre0op. I like pen pals that can answer short letters with questions like: 1. Do you have any pets? 2. Do you like music? 3. What type of music do you like? I would appreciate it if my questions about What to do about Vomiting and Diarrhea that lasts for several hours after Gastric Bypass is answered and my questions about Heartburn or GERD and pen pals is answered. If you know the answers to my questions please let me know I would appreciate it. Channing -
Hi all! I'm new to the forum and am considering VSG.....I have thought about surgery for years, but have been afraid---surgery scares the heck out of me, but the future seems rather bleak if I don't get this weight off...........the big 5-0 is coming up soon, and it's unsettling.......with health concerns, I don't see getting to a healthy weight happening w/o surgery. I had a sister and a friend who had the bypass a number of years ago, and that just isn't for me. A friend had lapband, and I would prefer not to deal with the adjustments for maintenance. I went to the informational session last night, and meet with the surgeon next week. The procedure is covered 100% and need to go through a 3 month period before the surgery to meet with NUT & Psy.....will find out next week what hoops I have to jump through...........I know one will be my PCP.......I'm not sure if he will be supportive..... Thankfully, my husband of 29 years is onboard with this. Has anyone had Cigna, and were they good to deal with for this process? Thanks for all the helpful info posted on the forum.

Thanks ladies that helps a lot! After talking over the decision with my friend I have decided the band is for me! I still can't wait to paranoid to get my stomach cut in half. I also know 2 people that lost weight with gastric bypass but have put on a lot of weight since its been a few years. Thanks for ur responses! I am taking 5 days off but will actually be off for 8 days total cuz I work 43 hrs/4 days a week. I have an overnight stay after surgery but after reading think the 2 hrs ride home will stink. I'm gonna hope for the best though. I appreciate ur prayers! Thanks again!

A few notes for others with similar questions, if you change your mind about which procedure you get -- you may have to go through the approval process all over again. Each WLS has a different code and different requirements. You may not be approved for other surgeries. If you live far away from your primary find another doctor near you who is willing to learn to help care for you. Your primary should be able to help you find someone close. With gastric bypass and the sleeve most doctors following the more successful eating plans won't allow those patients to eat solids until six weeks post op sometimes eight. With Lapband/Realise it's generally four to five weeks. So you actually eat 'real food' sooner on the less invasive surgery, makes sense though doesn't it? And if GB fails for you, you can't really 'start over', but with the band everyday is a new opportunity to get back on track.

Seeking information on presurgery dietary requirements
BandedBrunette481 replied to AllieBB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately, this is one of those things that's unique to each person. It depends on the doctor you go to and what insurance you have. I only had to do 2 weeks of a liquid only diet before surgery that included Protein shakes, Water, broth, sugar free popsicles, and sugar free Jello. Other people I know were allowed one small meal of protein and veggies in their diet. Some people only have to do a liquid diet a few days prior to surgery. My insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield, used to require a 3-6 month medically supervised diet before they would do surgery (it's even before the 2 week liquid diet), but they have since stopped making that common practice. Some insurance companies may still require it though. So you may not be dreaming about how fast it can go! I went to my first seminar about weight loss surgery in November of 2013 and I had my LapBand surgery in February of 2014! It can happen that fast, but not always. Depends on doctors appointments and such lining up just right. Best of luck to you! -
New here, considering surgery
Rhonda_K_K replied to kramsay1980's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kimberly, Welcome to the site. There are a lot of great people on here with great advice. I'm 47 years old and have been heavy all my life. I was in the 6th grade when my doctor placed me on a diet. I too have been on every diet that you can imagine. I actually tried to get gastric bypass back in the 80's but the insurance company I had back then didn't think I qualified for the surgery. They thought I wasn't heavy enough. It took me many years to think about having weight loss surgery again as I didn't want to get my hopes up again and be denied by my insurance. Finally last year I started looking into WLS again. I did my research and I felt the lapband was for me. It's less invasive and they are not cutting or removing anything. I had my lapband surgery July 2, 2013. It's the best think that I could have done for myself. I have lost 42 pounds so far. I feel fantastic. I recently had my labs done and everything is in normal range. My doctor wants me to lose a few more pounds and then she is going to take me off of my cholesterol meds. My cholesterol is at 130 now. My triglycerides is at 72 when I use to be over 200. For years I had to take arthritis meds for my knees. I no longer need them!! It has to be your decision has to what kind of WLS is right for you. Good luck to you in whatever decision you make. -
I am 3 weeks out gastric bypass and I had too much to eat and I ate the wrong things. I cannot seem to control myself. What’s wrong with me ?

Advice regarding "Omentum Separation"
RestlessMonkey replied to Gerberdayzee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig unless I just absolutely HAD to, as in using a drug to save my life when all others failed. If I wanted things cut up and rerouted, there are surgeries that have been "tried and tested" (like the sleeve, bypass, the duodenal switch) for me to choose from. I wouldn't mess with my omentum. For me the beauty of the band is that my "innards" remain intact. Only you can decide this. Personally, I'd say no. (San Antonio has a LOT of "clinical trials". Usually the patients receive the med or procedure, and concommitant medical care for free, PLUS some compensation. Will they cover your surgery, if you are willing to be the experimentee? What is "plan B" if it does you damage? I'd ask this, if I decided maybe to proceed!) -
Sleeved in October 2013...down 52 lbs. exercise regimen is a must.
joatsaint replied to Scarpediem's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Way to go! I believe exercise is a key component in successful weight loss. Not just because it burns calories, but it also helps prevent muscle loss as your body loses weight. I know that my weight loss wouldn't have been as good if I hadn't been exercising on a regular basis. I had to find ways to continue burning calories at the same rate as I was right after surgery. Since I wasn't carrying around the extra weight, my body didn't have to work as hard to get around. I've only done walking as my primary exercise, but I do vary it up by going to walking tracks and park trails. I like a variety of hills and obsticals to keep things from getting boring. Back in October, I started wearing a backpack with a few books in it for added weight then got a weighted vest in November. The vest had the added benefit of working my core and leg muscles in a new way. It's hard to make a sharp turn with a 20 lb vest. :-P -
@@MsB7 and @@SarahM76 - it will all be worth it! We've all been there. I had my appointments starting in November '15, and had surgery March 16 of this year. I'm down now 72 lbs and feeling like a whole new man. Congrats to both of you on your journey so far!

Hi My name is Kimberly and I live in the Chicago, IL area. I am new to this site and still considering what type of surgery might be better for me. I know that I am ready for a change in my life, especially being overweight for most of my life. I am 33yrs old and have a 4yr old son that I want to try to be as healthy as possible for. I have tried multiple diets and different ways of trying to lose weight that have only brought short term success. I am committed for long term and healthier results in losing this weight. I would love feedback or info from any members who have already completed the wls. I am still curious to know why some choose lap band over gastric bypass over the sleeve. I have done my research into all 3, but I am wondering who makes the determination what is best (the doctor, you, or health insurance coverage). Right now they have me scheduled to meet with Dr. Rami Lutki from Mercy Hospital. I am excited and scared all at the same time. Thanks for listening to my story.

Anyone have a sleeve fail and did bypass? HELP
Martene81 replied to peacheeie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the pre op stage so I can't offer any help but I'd like to follow the thread because I'm trying to decide between the sleeve or bypass. I've heard a lot more people talk about little or no restrictions with the sleeve so for that reason am leaning more towards bypass so I don't have to go through another surgery in the future. hopefully someone can offer some advice on how to help so you don't have to go through another surgery. -
I am new to the forum and haven't done this type of thing before so I hope I am doing it right! Not banded yet but finishing up preop requirements for insurance and should be scheduled end of April. I would love more info on life after banding, the good and the bad. I have read alot about people fighting hunger in the first couple months and even gaining weight! Is this going to be enough? I am not considering bypass because it is to radical for me. New gastric sleeve procedure sounds like the best way to go but my ins won't cover. I would love to hear from some of you who are postop and have any helpful hints! Good luck to everyone out there fighting this battle to improve health and happiness!

Hallelujah for this thread! I was banded in March 2009. In November 2009 I noted my weight loss slowed. I am on Depo injections so don't get a period. Anyway it wasn't until Sept 2010 that I realized I am in perimenopause - hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, irritability, trouble concentrating, you name it. I have had some deaths in the family so I thought some of my symptoms were related to that. I am now on an antidepressant and for the most part am comfortable with my weight where it is, but I really want to try to maintain and not gain at this point. I never thought entering menopause would take me for such a ride. I think I would have been able to handle it or the grieving process along, but together it has been crazy. Thanks for starting this thread!

can you live a normal life aftet a sleeve surgery?
Wallflower7522 replied to LighterSmarter's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm 3 months out from gastric bypass so my experience might be a little different. I would say you're probably freaking yourself out more than you need to be. At this point my life feels relatively normal I just don't eat and drink as much as everyone else. If I'm really thirsty or dehydrated I can still drink a cup of Water fairly fast. Sometimes I can only get down a little bit, sometimes I can get down a lot. I feel full like I did before, but sometimes it a heavier fullness and I feel full much quicker. For the most part, I've been able to eat whatever I want, I just have to watch how much I eat. My pouch doesn't like bread and grease, but those are things I don't need so I avoid them for the most part anyway. The key is moderation. Once the weight starts coming off and you're all healed, you'll be so glad you did it. It's easier once you know what your body can handle and once you're all healed and can tell when you're hungry and when you're full. -
Hi i had my band fitted on 25th June, two days of hell followed, constantly vomited, was really scared that i had done some damage but nurses didnt seem too bothered just kept giving me antisickness medication which didnt really work. Anyway i decided id be better off at home and left, tried soup until it stayed down, was feeling quite low and thought just get on with it, get out and do the normal things and since then ive been fine, quite sore still but managing on purree foods etc I really regretted doing it five days ago but i weighed myself today and i have lost 10lb in 6 days! This site has been such a help especially making a decision between the bypass and the band and im glad that i decided on the band. Lisa:smile:

Hi Newbie Here just wanted to say hello
daisybug replied to OGLET's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
it DEFINITELY will get better for you, hang in there! That sucks you had to experience post-surgery nausea. I was really scared about that but they gave me a shot just before putting me under anesthesia and told me it was anti-nausea medication to prevent getting sick afterwards. Everyday you will be feeling better!! Don't get frustrated if you don't have decent restriction when you start eating solids. I have noticed on this site that MANY people have to get multiple fills before getting good restriction. in the long run, i believe its still better, safer and HEALTHIER than bypass. I LOVE MY BAND! 278/231/180:rolleyes2:
