    Diabetic Burnout

Of course not because it's bollocks. I was on insulin shots several times a day and I don't need to take any meds since years and yes - I eat carbohydrates (and I don't count them). Real weight gain or the bit of water weight people gain once they introduce more carbohydrates? If the weight gain is real she's gained because her calorie intake is higher than it should be not because she ate "carbs". <rant>People complain that they gain weight every time they eat "carbs". However, it seems that they simply add the carbohydrates on top of what they're already eating. Of course this behavior makes you gain weight - you eat more calories than you're used to.</rant>
  2. Seven and a half years out. No revision, no major miserable side effects, no issues, no permanent weight gain. I had to have my gallbladder removed a year after my sleeve and I have GERD that I take a PPI for. I lost 100 lbs and gained five over the first two years. Stable at 137 since except for a 7 lb gain last year due to too many Frappicinos. The seven pounds are gone now. I would have sleeve surgery again in a second. I am skinny and happy.

    Need support

Most of us have had weight gain after goal. Getting back on track can be done. Believe in yourself. Time to clean out the house of crap food choices. Go grocery shopping for your weight loss phase food plan. For some, a reset gets them back into the weight loss mindset. For others it's too restrictive to go back to liquid soft food stage. You will get the same results going back to bariatric basic food stage. Whole foods that are more satisfying. Log and weigh your food. Hydrate Activity You have done this before you can do it again. It's finding the old discipline you had at the beginning of your surgery. The food holidays are here. Make a goal to get past them and ring in the new year at a lower weight. It's not easy to detox and get back to healthy habits. Its work. You will feel crappy for a few weeks. If you are consistent you will see results.
  4. Hi everyone, I keep reading horror stories about Sleevers past 5 or 10 years. I’m wondering if there are any of veteran sleevers with no revisions, major miserable side effects, issues, weight gain from expanded sleeve, that are still thriving and happy with their choice? I’m a week post op and everyone’s horror stories are causing me major regrets and fear.
  5. Sorry for the delay in response, I used to be able to hit quote on cell phone and just respond and now I can't and I must log in each time then thread through the messages, ugh...anywho, back to your question... So it's MUCH easier than I thought! 1 Scoop Gen Pro in Green Smoothie or Coffee = 30g protein! If you use Soy Milk in your smoothie that's an EXTRA 7g protein so 37g just in the morning. Then I like me a solid protien suppliment. So like a PureProtein Silky chocolate Bar (which totally feels like a desert treat to me) is another 21g Protein so that right there is 58g protein. I usually keep it in my purse when going out or shopping and in stressful situations (such as the British festival in Central Market yesterday where they had my favorite Chocolate covered Shortbread cookies available to SAMPLE!!!), I take a bite to take the edge of.f Add a NeuroProtein Water for 10 more G and you are at 68 g for the day! Now if you do even 1 shake like Premier, you are at 98g protein!!! but I don't always go that route. I will do humus or a Crunchy Protein Chip snack for extra 10 - 15 g protein Sometimes for snack I'll have 5 Whole Wheat Crackers and 5 Cashews = A couple more protein grams here and there. Then there are protein substitutes, like Meatless Meatballs, Meatless Crabcake balls, etc that are packed with protein and are a quick cook! So most days I wind up with well over 80g protein! Like they other day I had 106 protein, 58 Net Carbs and 820calories, with 23 sugars (but all the good kind). The fiber in the fruits and veggies helps drive down my Net Carbs, cuz you can subtract those back out. But the most important part of this is that I feel like I'm nourishing my body. I mean yeah the docs would like you to be All Protein, NO Sugar etc etc, but is that sustainable? Is that good for you? And also, Megan, you are loosing weight wonderfully!!! OMG you are doing great, so I would not stress about the exact mix. For me, it's less about loosing weight and more about GAINING health and vitality, and loving and respecting my body enough to nourish and take care of it. The weight loss is a natural byproduct of that. Since yesterday another pound rolled off, but not through food punishment and starvation and a negative relationship with food that has plagued me all my life, but a vibrant positive attitude towards eating coupled with enjoying every morsel of what I eat. I am using Baritastic to track stuff...I don't particularly like tracking. You're a slave to the scale, a slave to the app (I know it's good for accountability etc), but once I am cleared for all foods...which, at this point, I'm at 5 weeks and like I said, I've kinda been doing my own research and carving out a healthy plan I can adhere to, the idea will be to ditch the incessant tracking, weighing, stressing and obsessing, and learn to listen to my body with love and compassion. I know it sounds corny, BUT...this being my 3rd rodeo and all, I know that at first, you are all into the numbers, the digits, the macro nutrients etc etc, and you can really burn yourself out on that and become sick of it, which can derail you and lead to weight gain in the end. No Bueno! A good plan is one you can stick to long term. I also know I don't want to wind up deficient and sick. Like after my Sleeve, I wounded up so Anemic and raggedy and tired, I was going in every 3 weeks for Iron infusions. Sitting there with my Elective mess along with other patients who where there for bonafide serious stuff like Chemo. I was feeling, unhealthy and demoralized. Like I had gotten the whole food thing wrong. A horrible place to be mentally and physically. Anywho, hope this helps. It's just my advice, and of course I'm not a doctor or anything. BUT I also know that I cannot fully trust a doctor or surgeon etc with MY health. The medical system is too disjointed! I cannot trust my OB completely, to them I'm just a Uterus, I cannot trust my Bariatric Surgeon competly, to him my success lies in the Scale numbrer and my health is so much more than a number etc. So all this to say I am a firm believer in you being an informed patient that listens not only to others but to what your body is trying to tell you as well
  6. I was thinking the same thing, Matt. Not sure what was meant by not being comfortable with what the RNY entails... This morning I literally met a woman in the lobby of the hospital where I had my bypass who was there to meet with a bariatric surgeon to discuss getting a bypass. Apparently, her sleeve turned out to be nothing she had hoped it would be. Reflux, weight gain. She expressed regret (to me) that she didn't get the bypass from the beginning and was upset that her surgeon hadn't steered her in that direction. I know I'll always be grateful to my surgeon for persuading me to get the bypass even though I thought the sleeve was what I needed (based on what I had read at the time). This was before I joined this board. I doubt I would have ever considered the sleeve if I had joined several months prior.

If my experience can help you..l

Read your article, nice progress. I also have had no complications with the band and have lost 100+ with no weight gain. I am right by Ridgefield, NJ. I think as long as you follow the rules as you do, it’s a great option. It saved my life too and that was what made me do it also.

    Going out to eat

FYI - while I may be nationally ranked in my age group in my sport - I also have a resting metabolic rate of 1100 cal per day to avoid weight gain (had the study done a few weeks ago - my resting heart rate is generally about 45). I generally do not eat what I burn, but do work out to burn about 800-2000 calories a day - So on those days I boost my protein and carb consumption usually with supplemental shakes pre or post workout. However, on Saturday, I did fence a tournament and burned about 3000 calories. I had takeout chinese for dinner that night - but ordered shrimp with broccoli and ate 4 shrimp and a bunch of broccoli over about 1/4 cup of brown rice. Certainly whether to eat out or not is up to you. I eat out at least one a week. I've learned to manage - it has taken time. Best wishes to you.

    Lap Band 11 years out

I had my surgery back in 2011... I've learned that the band is a tool that helps to control my weight, but in the end I have to carefully count my calories, carbs and protein intake. I went through a few years of having the band tightened and loosened. Either I was getting stuck all the time, or had no restriction. The magic spot for me was when I had a fill that allowed me to eat one slice of pizza in comfort (a rare treat these days!) without feeling the need to eat the whole thing! I have had years where I've gained some of the weight back, but that was due to my lack of diligence. At this point there are no foods I cannot eat as long as I chew properly. I've learned that counting carbs was very critical when I hit a stall. I've managed to lose weight continually by carefully monitoring and controlling the quality of what I eat. Giving up sugar and switching to fat free Half and Half in my coffee was enough to cause noticeable weight loss. Little things add up. That means I have to keep a computer log of my daily food intake and activities. I've learned that becoming complacent leads to weight gain. I've learned a lot reading these forums. In my humble opinion too many banders think the band is going to do all the work. Living with a tight band and being in discomfort IS not what the band is about. I have not been stuck if over five years. I don't have any sensation that the band is there, except that I know I feel satiated sooner because I do have the band. I am now averaging about .7 lbs a week weight loss, which is pretty good for a guy in his seventies and who is several years post surgery. I want to lose another 20 pounds before I leave this earth, makes it easier on my pall bearers. Good luck on your journey, it is worth it.

    Going out to eat

I'm not "giving up my life". Its all part of my life style chsnge . like I said , eating out is big part of my weight gain over the years. So why go back to it. Sent from my Z970 using Tapatalk
  11. My thoughts exactly. I just returned from my endoscopy this morning. sleeved over 6 years ago and noticed return of reflux (weight gain) and wanted to check it out. Turns out my sleeve is a little stretched and although I was nervous about bypass, I'm moving forward after today as I am not going back and I know what I didn't do with the sleeve..I fully own my part in this setback. I'm doing the pre stuff for revision to bypass and wondered if I was the only one as this doesn't appear to be a big topic. This is my 2nd chance to get it right.
  12. I think maybe you and I have similar triggers. Dayum, I wouldn't wish that on anyone! haha! It really sounds like you're at burnout phase. ((hugs)) I think you should try doing your moderate approach to IF like 14-16hour fasts, then eat regularly, following your surgeon's rules: protein first, low glycemic veg and fat, plus carbs at the end if you still have room or want them and see how it goes. Quit ordering off the appetizer menu, quit ordering chicken if that's not what you want...And keep your cals in the 800-1000 range-ish. No beer or alcohol. *sniff* Cuz you know, misreh loves company! And keep track of it here! I think that's the cool thing about this thread is that we are kind of n=? how many are doing IF from this thread and we should all post our experiences so others might learn or have a light bulb moment. You know? I def think your weight gain is beer related and if you go clean for the next 3-4 days you will be down those 4 and who knows, maybe another one as well? UGGGGGH on the late night food runs! I swear I thought about you as we were sitting in Taco Bell last night. LOL.
  13. Hi there, I just joined this site looking for support and suggestions on my 1st major weight gain 16 years post a very successful gastric bypass surgery. I am 52, had the surgery at 36, and lost 198 lbs, and maintained a goal weight of 170 lbs, with a yearly fluctuation of 10 lbs, or so, post operatively. I also maintain yearly blood work that drives my nutrition and supplemental needs with my primary doctor. I gained about 20 lbs about 4 years ago after back surgery, but brought it down again within the year. Here is my problem, last January I started menopause, stopped oral contraceptive, and have experienced heavy insomnia, hot flashes, hormone shifts, and large weight gain of 50 lbs for the year. I have to add that this total change in my physical, and emotional health, has led to some depression, which of course does not help. I am still going through Menopause but I feel more emotionally stable and ready to address the weight gain. My question is, where do I start? My surgeon had always said "you have a permanent tool at your disposal, so if you feel yourself slipping from your program, then go back to the beginning" which I have always assumed he meant to start at only fluids and gradually increase intake from there, but I've never truly slipped with a significant weight gain in 15 years, so never had to go back. I would appreciate surgeon and fellow post operative patients advice and suggestions please.

    I don't understand!!!

Not to be rude, but people with metal health issues can't always control their mood or always be positive. I am here because this is suppose to be a supportive community not one who that dictates how to feel or states I have unrealistic expectations in one sentence then that I don't know how to differentiate between temporary and actual weight gain. What I said was how I feel, the frustration and depression not a lack of understanding or intelligence I thought that is what these forums are for. I apologize, but I have really found your posts hurtful.
  15. I started IF cuz I'm a follower of @GreenTealael and @sillykitty hehe. Seriously though, I used to do IF a long time ago and it helped my insulin resistance tremendously and helped me lose weight in addition to my low carb lifestyle. FF to today and even though I've had surgery and am losing, every pound lost is hard won. I was eating between 600-800 (about) and if I went up closer to 800/day for an extended period, I either stalled or gained. I also know my insulin is still higher than I'm comfortable with. I am on a wonderful anti-cancer drug that shuts down my hormones and puts me in super menopause. It works, but the side effect is no hormones and weight gain. So I decided to try IF again. I do know of the great metabolic and health benefits of IF from reading many books/studies about the subject. But even more importantly, I've experienced these improved health benefits in myself: improved asthma, better/deeper uninterrupted sleep, less pain/inflammation and fewer lymphedema events, lower bp, lower A1c, lower bgs, weight loss. And in the past couple of years it has gained momentum and popularity. I want to have days where I can eat 1200 calories without gaining 2-6lbs! I want to have days where I can eat 1200 cals and not stall. I want to speed up my loses. Recently I've gone down to losing about 4-6lbs per month. That makes weight loss very difficult for me from a compliance stand point because one meal could conceivably wipe out an entire month of effort and so it really reduces my motivation levels! So I just chose to go back to the kind of IF I'm used to doing and that is Dr. Johnson's regimine of alternating DDs and UDs. Edited to Add: I weight daily--sometimes thrice daily. hehe. I was crazy long before I started this practice, but it keeps me honest. I am recording my weight here weekly on Mondays cuz it's gonna happen that the day after an UD I will be up on the scale and the day after a DD, I will or should usually be down or the same...

How do people gain weight after Sleeve?

I'll bet it's the steroids. They're famous for weight gain.
  17. I’m 12-13 months out and I’ve regained about 2kg (5lbs) in the last 2 weeks. It’s seriously not that hard. I’m terrified! I’ve mostly stuck to healthy food I’ve previously eaten but in larger quantities. I’ve been snacking all day (lots of peanut butter and bananas which is only good in moderation), halo top and tons of dark chocolate (OK, not so healthy). My sleeve is not restrictive on halo top and chocolate. I need to refocus but it’s very difficult at the moment. I’m seriously struggling. I’ve had plateaus before but not gains. I’m devastated. I keep dreaming of hitting that elusive “healthy” BMI but it seems impossible. Is this self sabotage? My steroid medication? My weight doesn’t want to be this low? I have no idea! But yeah, not to alarm anyone but weight gain is not impossible. It’s not even that difficult!
  18. Calorie dense food eaten often combined with liquid calories. I could polish off a couple pizzas in a day if I felt the inclination to do so. It would literally take the entire day but I could do it. Add on a Starbucks milkshake that's almost half your daily calorie allowance and boom. Weight gain.
  19. Oh wow, okkkkkk DEF the late nite hummus and pita! I missed that before! If all you had was that tiny amount of G2. Pfffff. That ain't even enough to deactivate the IF in my HO. I 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% agree about seeing the menu/planning ahead of time. I plan that meal first from the menu and plug it in, so I know what to do with the rest of the day. LOL! What a goober, right? If it's on the fly...then FM!!! It's very very difficult in that case and triple that if it's Asian or Mexican. *sigh* And yes, I completely get and understand the whole ordering off the App menu or the side menu of the add-on menu. It totally torks me! I WANT an entree! But I've really gotten to where I hate leftovers from restaurants and I used to love them. And I feel so guilty ordering a full size entree. To make matters worse, Mr. F. and I have different food preferences especially now. And I get tired of his stuff. Plus he hates to share. He will eat every last morsel on his plate and if I ask to share, he gives me like a bite or two. LOL. And then I get angry. So yeah, I try to find cheap alternatives and usually do just fine. But still...gah! It's just complicated. Right? I don't know what to say about the metabolism. I also share this fear big time! It's hard to think you are taking in very many cals given your quantities. So the 4.5lbs gain is a stumper. Could that be more travel edema and salt/alcohol/flying rather than real weight gain due to diet? I DO think that increasing calories slowly is easier on us rather than doing it all at once...I've done both and felt like the gradual worked better for me without stalls/gains. The other way, I for sure pack on about 5-10lbs then stall for a few weeks. Then I "may" get back to losing, or maybe I won't. What is strange for me this past week with the IF is that normally, if I eat 1000cals or more, I will be guaranteed to wake up with anything from a 2-6lb gain overnight. That didn't happen here, even on the nights I had a glass of wine and the bread. I'd wake up with maybe 1 to 1 1/2lbs overnight? Maybe? Sometimes, the scale just stayed the same. Then when I would do my DD, the next day I'd either be the same or I'd be down a bit. If I do UDs that are fairly low carb/no wine, then I just start racking up the losses without gains on the UDs. That's been my pattern with JUDDD in the past and it's looking like that may be my pattern again?

    Forgot diet plan

Programs vary all over the map in many areas, though the common elements are: Protein - consistent with need, but generally 60-80 g for women (though shorter than average women can do fine in the 50's) and 80-100 g for men. Protein need is most closely associated with lean body mass, hence the difference between men's and women's needs. Eat protein first, then veggies, fruits and starches Eat slowly, chew well Don't drink calories (protein drinks excepted, though you won't need to do them at this point) Avoid drinking with meals and for 30 minutes after meals. Drink a minimum of 64 oz, though the need is often higher depending upon activity and weather. Those are the things that are common to most plans. Minimizing sugar intake is often sited and sometimes a number is put on it; likewise, carb numbers are occasionally specified, though those can be deceiving and best not dwelt on. Calories are sometimes specified in programs and sometimes not. Those that work best seem to cluster in the 6-800 calorie range, but that is hard to maintain in a regain recovery program. It is best to work with your individual metabolic need, which again can be quite variable; Try for 1000-1200 and see how that goes; 12-1500 is often a maintenance level for many women. Keto and vegan/vegetarian are largely irrelevant - they are more lifestyle type diets that don't have any inherent weigtloss properties, though they can be used if one keeps the calories low enough. The key factor is what kind of diet will help you stay away from the high calorie/low nutrition junk that promotes weight gain. Good luck in your endeavor....
  21. Alcohol can be a large contributor to weight gain. It has a lot of carbs. I'd you approach it from that stand point a 750 ml bottle of wine with 5 oz serving size and about 4 carbs per serving would have 5 servings in the bottle. If you drink the whole thing you're basically drinking 4carbs×5 servings and that comes out to about 20 carbs. If you're also getting carbs in other ways it can all add up. Carbs will sneak up in you if you let them back in. A pound or 2 here and you can backslide without realizing it. You have been through so much and you can't let this defeat you! People can suck, a LOT, but at the end is the day, the person you're spending the rest of your life with is you. Love yourself and rise above, you will get through it. As others have said, counseling may be beneficial. If you're insured through your employer they may have covered services for this. Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Anyone have vsg after lap band removal? I had my band removed 9 months ago and am slowly gaining. BMI 27. Considering Dr. Pompa in Mexico. Any advice welcome!
  23. RickM

    quick question....

30 min after a meal, most certainly; 30 min before meals, maybe (depends on specific program instructions.) You don't want to drink after meals to keep the food in the stomach as long as possible; drinking too soon can help empty the stomach sooner leading to more inter-meal hunger and is associated with weight gain or poor loss. Drinking before meals can be a problem for some for a while immediately after surgery as with the potential for inflammation in the stomach, fluids may still be in the stomach at meal time, impeding getting the food in. As the inflammation resolves - a few days to a few weeks, the fluids move through the stomach easily and quickly and drain out in just a couple of minutes, so the pre-meal limitation is no longer needed. Some programs mention this last detail and open up pre-meal drinking at some point, but many don't bother and leave their patients hanging. (Similar problem as to how long does one need to sip, sip, sip their water before one can drink normally - many programs don't bother saying.)
  24. I’m self-pay, so no issues with insurance due to weight gain, thankfully. It is the time of year, every year, when I start to eat uncontrollably and gain weight. I have SAD, and It happens EVERY year between late August and late September as the days start to get shorter. I’m already up 5#, and I Can’t Stop Eating. My surgery is September 24, and I’m just so irritated, even though this is Just what I do this time of year. Anyone else have this problem?
  25. Thank you! Prednisone is the worst drug I've ever had the misfortune of taking. If you look at the photos, all of the stretch marks are because of Prednisone. When it was first prescribed, I was on an ultra-high dose. I gained over 75 pounds in about three weeks. My skin never recovered. A couple of years later when the doctor said I needed to take it again, I said no way. That was when I opted for the first surgery back in 1995. It is the only drug that has ever made me rage. I was a mess when I was on it. Aside from the weight gain, I was so short-fused no one could stand to be around me. Once I stopped taking it, that all went away. IMHO, Prednisone is evil, plain and simple... As for the keto diet, I've tried it and the high fat made me ill and gave me acne really bad. I'm basically doing a modified keto, modified Atkins, which is high protein and low carb. It has helped so far.
