I was banded by Dr. Kurt Roberts with Yale Bariatric group in New Haven, CT. Was banded on December 18th, 2008. Have had one fill of 1 1/2 cc's. I really don't have any restriction. I eat about a cup to a cup and a half of food and would love to eat less. I have lost 18lbs, but that was in the first two weeks. NOTHING since. Can anyone tell me what the 'norm' is? I feel like such a loser that I can't even lose a single pound!! I'm beginning to regret this surgery and thinking of gastric bypass. Please help! I will take any type of feedback you are willing to give. Thanks bunches! Brandy

How long for the compression garment?
mrgrta replied to Sue Magoo's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
My ps has you wear the binder 24/7 for 2-3 weeks and then switch over to Spanx until you hit the 3 month mark. The Spanx is definitely more comfortable, but the binder cuts down on the swelling for me. I have been switching back and forth. I do wear the Spanx at night because it makes sleeping so much better. -
First Weeks after Surgery
Shelley64 replied to shavonneb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't be discouraged. First of all, you're still in the healing phase. Your upper stomach has to heal where the band was attached. There will be some swelling which will go down after a couple weeks. Your surgeon probably didn't put any Fluid in the band or if so maybe only 1 cc or possibly 2. I was banded 1/11/11 and after about 2 1/2 weeks, I suddenly noticed that I didn't feel satisifed after eating what was on my "list of approved foods" for that time period. I freaked out too thinking I had made a huge mistake! the swelling had gone down so I had less restriction. I got a fill on 2/23 but didn't really notice a huge difference except if I ate too fast or swallowed too big of a bite. I'm going in again next Weds but based on my weight loss, they may not do another fill yet. I hope it shows up on the scale. My clothes are so loose but I still like to see a lower number on the scale. I am keeping a food journal because it really makes me accountable and am trying to keep my calories around 1100 and get in 60-70 grams of Protein. I know for myself, I'm going to have to follow a diet to reach my weight loss goals. The band is helping me eat less at each meal BUT I still have to control what I eat. I'm focusing on making good choices of lean Proteins and veggies. I still get head hungry but I do think it's less than the cravings I had before the band. It might be just my imagination or wishful thinking but I do feel like I have more control. Hang in there! Shelley -
When my primary 1st suggested WLS he put a notation of all the things that would justify me having WLS in my chart. Sleep apnea (I have used a clap for 13 years), back pain, joint pain, depression, GERD, trouble walking. So when insurance asked he already had all the bases covered. I saw him this week. He was very informative & wants to see me a month after my surgery. Toodles, Rue

Has anyone started soft foods during their puréed week? I’m tolerating puréed great and was wondering if I could advance to some softs. Any suggestions?

lachanga...are you actually keeping track of your caloric intake? Reason I'm asking...you may be eating TOO LITTLE. Yeap eating too little will slow down or stop your weightloss because your body will go into starvation mod. If you're barely eating as you're stating and you're working out three times a week that kind of gives a hint that this may be the problem. Track your food intake on Fitday or Sparkpeople or even just on a piece of paper.....My physician had me on about 800-850 calories a day at about the weeks you're at right now....check with your physician or bariatric center and see what your nutritional intake should be for where you are post-surgery now. Then see if you're getting it all in. I think you'll be amazed at what you find if you're really honest with your food journal. Then at least you'll know if it's too little, too much or if it's truly the amount you're suppose to have then you'll have information to bring to your doc for him/her to help you further and break that plateau. I wish you the best!

I started the log on fitday today. I will start monitoring. I get my second fill in March. My doctor wants me to consume at least 900 calories a day. I will keep the log for a few weeks. I may have to go for another fill sooner than March. Thanks everyone for your replies. I never thought that maybe I was consuming too few calories. That may be it.

Breast Reduction (When can I go back to work?)
Dr. Schulman replied to TheGh0st's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think you should be prepared to be out of work for 2 weeks. It maybe slightly less, but you have to see how you feel. There will be little discomfort after the first few days - actually, most people find beast reduction surgery quite tolerable. The thing to keep in mind is that your body uses a lot of energy to heal the wounds, so even if you don't have pain, you will feel tired for several weeks. Many of my patients with a desk job go back to work after 1 week, but it all depends on your situation and yor recovery. I would advise you to ask for 2 weeks, knowing that you may return sooner. Well like I said I wasn't really advised on anything.i honestly feel that I got the surgery and was thrown out of there right after. They just have me a paper that said liquids 1-2 week and mushies 3 week and fourth I can start having meals. I actually have been learning a lot from here. Thanks you guys and yes I know it was stupid and I won't be doing that again. Especially when I think of all the pain I went through to get this far. I've already lost 24lbs and I shouldn't be trying to get comfortable! Thanks for the tough love!

Aloha Njgurl! I am still losing. According to my doctor prior to surgery, I should have lost around 100 lbs at 1 year and slowed down after that. My problem was that I started loving my wine a little too much after surgery than I ever did before it. What I discovered is that for every week I had some, I would not lose for almost a month afterwards. The moment I stop for at least a week, I start dropping pounds again. The upside to that has been a slower loss than anticipated resulting in less lose skin for me. The downside is the disappointment I feel when the scale does not budge. The motivation comes in wanting to see movement on that scale. Thus, I return to accountability and following my plan like I am supposed to[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] That is why we are warned against alcohol because even if we still eat less, I find that I am not as mindful of carb intake when it comes to snacks with alcohol. I am still working my way towards at least 185. Like my doctor says, it did not take me a short amount of time putting on the weight so dont expect it all to disappear in a short time even with the surgery. I have heard some great success stories but again, everyone's journey is different, therefore we all lose differently. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Ready to hit the gym
Fiddleman replied to rocknrollmama1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At two weeks post op, it is best to keep walking. Think about increasing distance and speed. You want to give yourself up to 6 weeks to heal properly before taking on the rigors of the gym. -

Confession time! ( exercise related)
OKCPirate replied to Nurse_Lenora's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
What part of IL do you live in? Everything I have read that if you are trying to develop an exorcise habit, your best chances of success depends on location. If it is a pain to get to a gym, you won't go. So my first suggestion is to make a list of what's available. Use Groupon's to try out a variety of activities until you find the thing you find challenging. I found I enjoy "wall climbing" however, it is a pain to get to, so I don't do it. However my gym is 24/7 and three minutes away...so it's tough to make an excuse not to go. The place where I did yoga closed and moved an extra 10 miles further away from my house and with traffic when I could attend, that was actually an extra 30 minutes, not worth it to me. Fun also helps. When I am traveling, and there are mountains/hills to climb I go enjoy nature and get some cardio in. So start with what is available, and then start trying. It can be an adventure and fun. -
Lots of questions about the BodyBugg. Do you have one? Can I have your 2 cents?
me1234 replied to Brandy~'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
I just got mine a week ago but I gotta say this is the piece of the puzzle I have been missing. When I am working hard at weight loss I always log my food. The part that i couldnt ever figure out was how much am i really burning. I always obsess over ALL of the numbers and i think this helps me to obsess way less. I lost 3.6 lbs in the first week. I do not think that will continue as a constant however I now I feel like i have more flexiblity now that I can SEE the actual numbers. I do not think this device will work for people who do not log or keep a realistic log of their food. I do not think their web app is as good as it could be. It's a bit klunky and could be improved on. However, I am just sitting patient to see what happens when they release the next version. I do wish it would take the heart rate, however I have heard that will be in the v3 model. I am a swimmer so it would be fantastic if i could wear it while I swim. I read somewhere that they are having problems with that feature because of the usb port. I also saw a thread where a guy had a waterproof sleeve made so that he could use it with his water sports. So I may look into doing that. I have been wanting one of these since last year but because of the cost, I didnt want to buy a new toy that i may not use. I got lucky because one of the guys here at work was selling his used one, so i got it for $120. We based that number on the numbers we were seeing on Ebay. Apex has the subscription right now for $99 and that included a 3 month subscrition to the site and 1 session with the coach. Then after that you can renew for a much lower cost. They also have different eating programs that you can select from. Which gives you more options when you hit different goals. Anyway, for having used it a week, I gotta say this was totally worth the money and I love it. -
6 days postop and major heartburn...
juno610 replied to LostLucy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Lucy, Certainly call your doc with any concerns. I did not have a problem with heartburn, but my surgeon did say it was a common occurrance. She suggested Maalox Multi, which would help with gas and heartburn. Good luck to you! I felt much much better the second week. My hiccups still hurt like the dickens though! Maria -
To unfill or not unfill that is the question.
mikesmom replied to mikesmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks for your input. I did contact my fill doc. However the following day after I posted, I was able to to eat chili and hamburer and some chicken. WOW I am going to wait a bit to have some taken out and see how the week goes.. This band is crazy but I love it. -
Is this normal? Happened to anyone else??
babylovestoys replied to lauren0818's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
WOW! My band does the same thing. If I get tense or nervous about something it tightens up like a drum. My last fill I was a little too tight & I had the slime thing going on for about a week. The more anxious I got about it the tighter it goot. Fortunately after a week it was a little looser. Scarey though![ quote=mare5569;618423]My band has a personality all its own. However, I have figured out that the tightness is often in proportion to how tense I have been, if I am under stress, etc. When I had a disagreement with my hubby, it was so tight Water wouldn't go down, it actually came back. Good luck -
Ok, this has been ongoing for a few months so I'm going to explain in detail. I was banded in April 2007, at the time of the surgery I had 2 cc's in my band. One month later I go in for a fill and move up to 2.2 cc's. Another month later, I still wasn't losing weight so the doctor brought me to 2.8 cc's. After a month of that fill I started not being able to eat barely anything. Some days I could eat soft foods like baked potatoe, some days I couldn't even drink Water without feeling the pressure and pain in my chest. I also would spit all the time. I was salavating all the time and I would even salavate so much during the night that I would wake up in the night coughing and almost choking on my spit. It was weird. So I get unfilled completely after 2 months of being filled at 2.8cc's. A few weeks later they fill me to 1.8cc's, which doesn't do much so 2 weeks later they give me 2.2cc's. Which 2.2 still wasn't doing anything. About 3 weeks after that I go in and they do the barrium swallow and fill me to 2.7cc's because it looked like it finally gave some restriction. Well, about 2 weeks later I started having the same symptoms of not being able to eat so I go back into the doctor and they do the barrium swallow and then even 2.2 looks too tight. (It's strange how one week at 2.2 the liquid would go straight through, then after being at 2.7 then going back down to 2.2 it won't go down at all). At that visit I told them to keep me at 2.2 whether it looked too tight or not because I was tired of coming back every 2 weeks or so. Has this happened to anyone else? Now after about a month of being at 2.2cc's, it's starting to feel really tight again. I'm waking up in the middle of the night because I feel like I'm choking on spit or stomache acid or something. Also, this past weekend I would eat a meal in the afternoon (normally salad) and then by the evening I would have this burning feeling in my throat and chest like it was heart burn or something. That happen for about two days and hasn't happened since. The pain isn't nearly as bad as it was when I was too tight at 2.7, but I don't feel this is normal. Should I be going back for ANOTHER unfill?? It's aggrevating going to and from getting filled and unfilled cause my band will look fine at 2.7cc's then in about a month become WAY too tight and then unfilling back to 2.2cc's is still too tight. I don't know what to do or if this is normal or if anyone has expierenced something like this?! Why is my band and body so weird! ??haha Thanks, Lauren

Hi LadyBugRed, If you haven't had your first fill yet, in my humble opinion you shouldn't be too concerned about your progress. I lost only 14 pounds before my first fill. The majority of that weight came off in the first few weeks after surgery, and then the scales came to a dead halt. I lost 8 pounds almost immediately after my first fill, and am pleased with the steady progress I have made thus far. I really don't think most people start to see real progress until they start getting fills. This does seem to be a process for most of us. As you read these boards you have probably noticed that some people need only one fill while others need two, or three or even several. I don't feel that I am at an optimum level of restriction yet, and am scheduled for my third fill next month. Hope this helps a little and Good luck! Hi! I am still here. I was just out of town this week. Everyone seems to be doing amazing. pigsrflying - I agree about grouchy people, but just think, it is 17 pounds without restriction. Imagine what it will be with restriction! Good luck. TexasBecky - Wow that is a lot of weight for just a few people. We really are doing great. You can at 48 pounds to that for me!

I have to concur 100% with what both Penni and Marie stated. You need more calories..1200-1500 a day is what my target is... Not to mention if you are only eating 600 calories and exercising 4x's a week an hour at a time you could be losing lean muscle mass which is not what us bandsters want to do. Up your caloric intake this week and see what happens Hang in there we all have been where you are at, I'm frustrated attimes and I'm a year post op
