One week post-op — feeling hunger
imhenryxvi replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, MusiGal. I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling hunger pangs, too. I do think the acid reducer helps matters. Now that I’m about three weeks out, I’m realizing that I wake up very hungry, but don’t experience hunger as dramatically throughout the day. So, if I eat sensibly in the morning (I’m on soft foods now), I can pretty much manage the rest of the day. I encourage you to ask your surgeon about an acid reducer. Good luck! -
I just had my surgery a week ago, but my parents were here this week and we went through all my clothes from the last time I lost a lot of weight (through diet and exercise) six years ago. I thought I had gotten rid of them all, but I still had a lot left. They're mostly size L-XL. I got rid of some I don't like any more, and honestly, most of the others don't work for the way my life is now (they need to be ironed and I travel all the time now). I'll decide whether to get rid of the rest later. We also got rid of some of the clothes that are too big now since I'd lost 50 lbs during my time preparing for surgery. That wasn't much. For now since I'm still sore from surgery I want the big t-shirts. I am not willing to expend any time or energy trying to sell or "find good homes" for these. I just had my dad take them over to the clothing donation bin across the street. If I was more "myself" (i.e., not on lifting restrictions) I would probably try to deal with it in a better way, but I just couldn't focus, and my parents were being so helpful!

I had my surgery one week ago today. Here's what I've noticed: 1) I'm down 7.2 lbs 2) The pain was not so bad in the hospital but pretty bad the first few days at home, especially when trying to get up from lying down or when sitting up. Only minimal pain when changing positions now. 3) I took 3 total narcotic pills once I came home 4) The constipation is real. I did not have a BM from two days before my surgery until 5 days after. This was despite two kinds of laxatives prescribed by the hospital. I ended up needing a laxative suppository and Miralax. The suppository helped me go in like 30 minutes. I'm now adding miralax and magnesium citrate on a daily basis. Drinking my 64 oz of water has been helpful, too 5) Drinking water or anything was really hard the first few days. No matter how small I made the sips, I still had pain in my chest, and then it felt and sounded like a demon was in there, growling, angry because he had been evicted from my stomach 6) By day 7 (today), I can drink a full mouthfull of water or protein shake. It's easier to take my pills at night than it was, but it's still harder than before surgery. 7) I do have hunger, but I'm eating less than 500 calories a day, so that's not surprising. I only need to eat a small amount like 2/3 of a yogurt or half a protein drink to feel full, although I need to eat every few hours 8. Walking is hard. It makes my incision hurt a lot. I have walked around the block a few times, but I'm tired by the time I get home, and it's a short block. I can walk up the ten steps to the front door, but hills are hard 9) I tried to do a bit of work today, just going through emails and responding to them, but after about a half hour, my head was swimming. I'm glad I took two weeks off! 10) My parents were here for a week helping me out. They stayed in a hotel nearby. I didn't need them that much, but it was really helpful for things like laundry and the dishwasher and trash. And for company. But it was hard seeing them eat tasty food when I was just eating yogurt or protein shakes. I am still glad them came, because now I am bored and lonely

One week post-op — feeling hunger
lizonaplane replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am now one week out and I feel hunger often, too. I am taking omeprazole. i find that I need to eat every few hours, but I am fine with a yogurt or half a protein shake or some sugar free jello (that's about all I'm allowed on my plan as I'm still only allowed liquids for another week). It also helps to drink a lot, in small sips (so it doesn't hurt). It's hard when you see other people eat "real" food too, but that' not what causes the hunger - to me, that's just wishing I could have what they're having. The hunger is just hunger, unrelated to cravings (i'm having cravings for cheese, but I'm also having true hunger). -

The hospital prescribed senna and a stool softener. When I hadn't had a BM after a week, they suggested a laxative suppository and miralax. I did both and had a BM a half hour after the suppository. I am now doing miralax every day plus the senna and stool softener. I just started magnesium citrate and will stop the senna and stool softener as they were only prescribed for two weeks. The hospital suggested I needed to increase my fluids and I've now been able to get above 64 oz of fluids the last few days and it's been better. I'm trying to get more activity too, but my incision hurts when I walk. Good luck! -

If you're female and it's even the slightest bit close to your period then bring pads. The surgery brought my period a week early (TMI, sorry). -
Hello, just found out last week. Surgery date is 10/19. I'm super excited

Don't freak out. There could be a host of reasons why you gained two pounds. Maybe your food's extra salty. Maybe you're under a lot of stress. Maybe it's almost time for the monthly visitor. But do track EVERYTHING. Download MyFitnessPal or MyMacros+ or Baritastic and log LITERALLY EVERYTHING you put in your mouth BEFORE you put it in your mouth. Including water. Including coffee. Including the sugar and cream in your coffee. Including the oil you cook in. Including salad dressing. Weigh things out—don't look at a piece of chicken and say well that's gotta be three ounces, get a $15 scale off Amazon or at Walmart and weigh it out. If you can't figure out how to track it, don't eat it. (You'll need to do this at some point after surgery anyway.) Start "auditioning" protein shakes and protein waters. You'll be surprised how full they make you even pre-surgery, and most are 150-200 calories and give you anywhere from 20-40 g of protein. Start by substituting one meal with the protein shakes. Once you're past that, substitute another meal with a protein shake (add a little salad or something with just a spoonful of dressing if you're still hungry). Drink a cup of water before you eat if you're prone to binging so your stomach's fuller. You got this. It'll come off and your surgeon will say, yep, you're good to go.

8 days till surgery

I would be a 23-year recovering opioid addict had I not been given codeine against my will in 2017... so four and a half years here. Ask your anaesthesiologist to give you a TAP block at the end of surgery, which is an epidural for your abdominals—you'll have a little mark where the needle goes into your mid-section in addition to your incisions from the surgery. It is not opiate-derived, and it lasts 12-24 hours depending how fast your body metabolizes it. By 12 hours after surgery I was able to cope with just simply extra-strength Tylenol/Panadol/acetaminophen. I took three doses of that on the day after surgery and haven't needed anything for pain since. -
Hey all. Like I’ve said before I am starting on this journey. I had my first consultation appt on Aug 31, 21. I’ve completed y lab work and psych appt. Psych has cleared me for surgery. I have my nutritionist appt after my 1st official WLS weigh in appt. I AM SO WORRIED that I won’t qualify. The doctor told me that I have to lose 15-20# before I could have the surgery. My thoughts were if I could lose weight that easily then why have the surgery. The problem… I’ve been watching what I’ve been eating, working out 2-3 times a week, eating low carb, low fat, drinking the 64 oz of water, 90g of protein, and the one meal a day; YET I’ve lost zero and gained 2. I’m starting to think I am cursed. My family has been helping me by not bringing crap home, making sure they are being supportive. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone else gone through this? I’m trying to stay positive, but I feel this is my last resort to living life. Please help…all advice is welcomed. P.S. My genetics are baddddddd….. I want to be around to see my baby marry. She’s only 11 and I may not see it.

Kids have been begging me to cut up the watermelon that’s been on the table for over a week so I did and we had pulled BBQ beef (Lloyd’s because I don’t BBQ) on king’s Hawaiian slider buns, coleslaw (I poured the dressing on the bagged coleslaw mix. 😂🤷♀️), watermelon and Brazi bites (a frozen ready to bake version of Brazilian cheese bread) one of which I ate while making kid plates. For what I ended up eating it came out to about 215 calories. -
9 months post RNY. Down 135 since surgery. Down 184 from HW. ***I've begun actively selling and getting rid of my old clothes. It's hard. It's a thing. I was attached to that wardrobe and there was a lot of time and money invested in finding clothing that fit, clothing that was for different weight fluctuations (or ever increasing), fit my needs and was as flattering as possible given being morbidly obese. There was clothing for work, special occasions, and travel. I should have gotten rid of items starting long ago. But I notoriously hang onto things "just in case," and then when I finally get rid of them, I want them a week later. And there is the ever present fear of failure of needing big clothes again someday. But, it was time........I'm also being selective where my items go, and I'm lazy. I would like to get some money where possible but will donate to the right cause. Despite hearing over and over that places gladly accept plus-sized clothing, I'm not finding that to be the case. I don't live in a metropolitan area where there are lots of options. The one women's shelter in town was not interested as they have no place to store clothing. Our one consignment store is a bit sketchy. You get the idea. I posted some items on social media (even that is more work than I am really interested in, so Poshmark, Mercari or the like is off the table). Long story short....a lady purchased some of my favorite items. I didn't ask for much money for them. I'm sure I could have gotten more but by this point, once I've made the decision to clean out, I just want them gone. I also let her take a great many items that had been altered but not professionally. Items that I didn't feel that I should charge for. She was so grateful and so excited. I was thrilled to see someone as excited by the nicer items as I once was. Having some of the clothing gone is liberating and I'm glad to be moving forward. I think the clothing was a security blanket of sorts that I just needed to be ready to let go of. ***I had my first appointment with a therapist. So glad I did that. I had some very specific qualifications I was looking for as well as having experience with bariatric patients. She is a perfect fit and was able to help me process some of my feelings and progress. ***As always, am grateful for the level-headed and accurate advice received here.

Who lost a lot before surgery?
HerdingCats replied to lizonaplane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I lost 75lbs starting in January 2021, then started my pre op liquid diet last week and lost another 9 for a total of 84. I've got one more week to go! My goal is 180, which would still be a bit overweight but was a thin as I've ever been so it's a long ways to go -

There’s a whole forum on here for plastics! Lots of us have had it done :) I had mine in January of this year at about a year and a half after my WLS. I had a tummy tuck with muscle repair, breast lift & augmentation, and arm lift. I took 3 weeks off work. It was a little rough that first week back, but over all healing was smooth. Click on my name, I’ve posted before & after pics. -
Possibly looking at revision; dumping syndrome
Dave In Houston replied to StratusPhr's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's been only 15 weeks since my surgery. I have not dumped yet. I'm trying to avoid anything near dumping. I can eat cottage cheese with about 5 ounces of pineapple without dumping. I eat this as a daily treat. The threat of dumping is a real incentive to avoid the sweet or greasy foods. I used to be able to eat half a pecan pie over the course of a day. I don't think I've had any since surgery. A box of donuts was also a threat to my weight and health. If everyone in the family had two, That would leave 8 for me. Now I don't bring them home. I hope I won't have any incidents to report a year from now. -
First month weight loss
QuirkyParrot replied to DanielleMc79's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 6' tall, weight 298 at the outset of this journey. I lost 20 pounds in 10 days on the pre-op liquid diet (surgery was scheduled in a cancellation spot, so my pre-op diet was shortened from 14 days to 10 days) weighing in at 277 on surgery day. At my one week follow up, my weight was 273 - so down 4 pounds from pre-surg weight (24 from start weight). My doctor said all progress measured going forward would be from my initial weight of 298. At my one month follow up, my weight was 265 - so 8 more pounds in 3 weeks. Honestly, I expected more and was very disappointed with that weight. When I mentioned it to my surgeon he told me that many people don't see a large loss on the scale between the 1-week and 1-month appointments, because your body is in a major metabolic flux. Your entire digestive, hormonal and endocrine system is essentially saying "WTF happened?" and shifting around trying to adjust to the "new you" on the inside and radical change in diet. His theory is that this is the cause of the notorious and dreaded week 3 stall. So, be kind to yourself. Follow the diet your surgeon has prescribed and have faith that your body will respond in due time. It's hard when you are not seeing the big loss on the scale that you expected right away, I'm right there with you. Try to find non-scale victories to motivate and inspire you. I had a little silent celebration when I sat in a seat in the theater last week and didn't feel the arms of the chair digging into my sides (I carry my weight in my torso area). I just sat down and didn't feel like I had to wedge myself in. The chair didn't know how many pounds I lost and the scale didn't matter one bit in that moment. It was a little thing, but I'm carrying that feeling of victory around like a mental trophy. -
I would either hold the card for a little while more, or get a variety of soups and freeze them until you feel ready. I'm close behind you (5 weeks PO) and my tummy would not be up to any Panera food just yet.

I had this happen to me several years before my RNY. It turned out to be a partial blockage in my lower part of my small intestine, a hernia. When it was blocked there was pain, so I wouldn’t eat for 3-4 days about once a week. As it progressed I had gastritis and malabsorption issues from regular vomiting. Only a GI doctor can fix this, give them all possible symptoms, endure the tests. Like others above said H. Pilori could be part of this too. There is a solution and eventually you will feel better. If you vomit granuals that look like ground coffee go to the ER right away. The ER will put you in the front of the line because that’s blood and can be serious.

How soon after bariactric surgery combined with a fixed hernia surgery can a person walk their well behaved GSD - he needs 2 miles worth of exercise?
ColieCallwell replied to Ezblast's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
What a handsome boy! I agree, it all depends on you and how you're healing. I had the sleeve and a hernia repair. I was able to walk a mile within a week of surgery, now post op 3 weeks, I can easily walk 3 miles. You might just break up his walks. Instead of doing 2 miles all together, do half mile increments throughout the day? My surgeon told me I can even start back to Crossfit as long as I feel up to it. She said to just pay attention to your body and if it hurts or you get too fatigued, stop. Good luck! Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app -
I seemed to hit my first stall in my 7th week. It lasted about 4 or 5 days. Currently finishing my 8th week and the scale started moving again this week. I am thankful that I was informed that this was a normal part of the wls process, and I didn't freak out! I just followed the program & waited for that scale to move! Good luck to you!

Help. What have you done to break stalls early in and slow losing
catwoman7 replied to ctsaunde2's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
stalls happen to almost everyone. Just stick to your program and stay off your scale for a few days. And know that it WILL break. Since it's been almost three weeks, it should break really soon... as far as being a slow loser, people lose at different rates for all different reasons - age, gender, body composition (% of muscle), genetics, starting BMI, whether or not you lost weight before surgery, etc. The only two factors that you really have any control over are activity level and how closely you stick to your program. If you do well with those two factors, you WILL lose weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow-loser from the very beginning, and I ended up losing over 200 lbs. So don't give up! -
Yes. Lots of regrets but most of it is psychological. I found a bariatric therapist that I'll start seeing next week so I'm hoping to learn better coping mechanisms and a better insight on my weight loss blues. 7 months after surgery about 80 pounds lost and I should be ecstatic. My knees dont hurt anymore I can walk without my feet hurting and stairs are no longer a dreaded force of terror. I should mention that I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder before surgery and I thought it was under control but faced with not being able to have comfort coping foods old symptoms flared up. Going to get over this Bump in the road though and once I do I'll probably have no regrets. Wish you all the best on your journey. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

What does the surgery feel like?
NovaLuna replied to PCOS_Mama94's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've only had three surgeries, but I've been put under a LOT because I've had multiple EGD's due to my EoE. You go into the OR and they prep you, and maybe ask you some questions and then with two of the surgeries they put me to sleep via the IV in my arm. I remember I woke after my WLS and felt like I got hit by a BUS! There was only one of my three surgeries that differed as it was brain surgery and they instead put on an oxygen mask over my face and I got the anesthesia that way for that one and they thought I'd get claustrophobic because a lot of patients start to panic with the mask on supposedly, but I was really calm and was complimented for that (next thing I remember about that one was waking up in recovery with the WORST headache of my LIFE and at that point the worst nausea of my life up until the nurse tells me that my sister is there to see me and the second my sister walked in I vomited! She thought it was hilarious that I puked as soon as I saw her lol.)
