    Revision surgery 9/8/2021

    Today is five weeks exactly, and I am down 21 lbs. Last week was weird; for some reason, I gained a few lbs, and then within six days, I started dropping an lb a day. My dietician would like me to stay between 80-100g of carbs, which I was reluctant about reading other revision experiences, but I am happy to say that I am still losing at 80g daily. I can eat many things without issue, but only if I eat them in small portions. Pooping is weird... It smells, often loose, and I have had some oily moments (TMI), but it is definitely diet-related. I have noticed that I have gas early in the morning and have to poop first thing, so that is something to keep in mind if you are considering revising to SADI.
  2. Considering you aren't eating much real food (based on the above) and are throwing up, I'm flabbergasted that your dietician would claim that 56 lbs isn't enough. I had my sleeve done on Aug 16, the day before your surgery, and I have lost 31.1 lbs since surgery. And I am heavier than you. And I am pretty darn happy with what I have lost! My math says that you've lost 7 lbs week (56 lbs/8 weeks). I do not understand what this person is talking about. Frankly, I'd have a lot of trouble taking them seriously. Are you certain the dietician wasn't concerning you were losing too fast, rather than too slowly? That would make more sense given your trouble having anything but liquids.

    Online "support group" not very supportive

    Wow, the goal of my program is for you to get protein from real food and not rely on protein shakes beyond the soft food stage. I only have them now if I want to add to my coffee, or my protein is lower for the day. But it’s probably no more than 1 every other week now. I do like using Devotion Angel Food protein powder for things like Pancakes. I have never actually tried it as a protein shake🤣
  4. I'm only on the second box since surgery. I would say I enjoy them about the same so far though. I typically opt for the carb smart options since they are more in line with what I should be eating. There are definitely recipes that I would have chosen before and cannot now but I still enjoy the 'healthier' options. A meal intended for 2 adults will generally feed myself, my fiancé and my toddler and sometimes still have leftovers depending on the recipe. We get in ruts with cooking so I like having different recipes to change things up and nights where I don't have to plan anything. Hello Fresh lets you skip weeks as often as you want so it's pretty low pressure.

    I believe all of us should know the "why" of things WLS. Most people don't want to know why, they just want a list of what to eat when, then get stuck when their life doesn't easily sync with the plan. Knowing "why" let's you understand how to make adjustments that aren't obvious but are still following the plan. Keep it up. I stopped going to (in person) support after the third meeting and left the online portion about the same time. The main topic was how to cheat, and the second was women stuff. Not my cup of tea. I never did protein drinks except when I was binge running and then it was more for the running than my plan. Even on puree I was at my appropriate protein level by about week 3-4. For RNY patients there is always the question of how much protein are we NOT absorbing because of our surgery. So popping in a protein drink can ensure enough is being absorbed. Or, like @catwoman7who have a specific need. My RNY had a small bypass so I don't malabsorb much. My doc was four square against protein drinks, he wanted us learning to eat correctly from the very beginning. My sense, though, is generally they are a meal replacement for the crash diet many surgeon's put their patients on so that they will lose weight faster. Keep on thinking and learning. Tek

    Hello, I just had full bypass on October 6th. I am a week post op and feeling very good, just very hungry at times. I am on clear liquids for 1 more week. I have moments where I'm so hungry my stomach growls. I am pushing through. I wish you all success and hope everyone is well!
  7. 4 lbs a week after the first month is pretty extreme, unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life". Does this dietitian have any experience with bariatric patients? Doesn't sound like it. most "normal" WLS patients lose about 15-25 lbs the first month after surgery, and then it slows down to about 10 lbs (give or take) a month for the next several months - and then it drops even further. Of course you will find people who lose more or less than that, but they're outliers. So you are fine - that dietitian is very misinformed.

    no - most people are able to get off them once they can meet all/most of their protein requirements via food. So after the first few weeks or months, most people are able to get off them. I still drink them at 6.5 years out because we found out early on that I malabsorb protein (and fortunately, I'm one of those weirdos who actually LIKES protein shakes), but I'm an anomaly.
  9. Thanks for your support. Yes, I've lost 56lbs over the last 7.5 weeks. I was happy until the dietitian mentioned otherwise. :(. I don't really have much in terms of guidelines on volume of food etc., ,other than consuming 60g of protein via shakes and about 1.5-2 ltrs of water. Would you be able to help with any guuidelines on how much food etc I should be consuming. another problem is that I'm mostly taking liquids since I'm unable to hold down eggs, chicken etc and throw up the same frequently. I'm able to tolerate lentils and vegetables curries so managing with but feeling I'm all over the place due to lack of guidance.
  10. Your surgery weight was higher than mine and you had your surgery almost a week later, yet your current weight is lower than mine! If it helps, you're making more progress than me, and my surgeon's office is happy with where I am. It's crazy how different expectations are; my nutritionist said that anything over 8 lbs a month is on track. Stalls are normal along the way and I think it's really difficult to expect to lose 4 pounds a week every single week. Great work so far!
  11. I am a person who always wants to know the "why" behind a rule (unfortunately!). So, as I've slowly been progressing through my surgeon's plan (still on pureeds for two more weeks, and I'm 7 weeks out), I've started wondering if we will always have to drink protein shakes. I hate them, they taste gross, and the ingredients list is like 5 paragraphs long full of things I can't even say - besides that, they're full of carbs and often high calorie. And if we do have to always drink them, why? Why can't we meet our protein goals through eating real food? For example, an egg and a morningstar breakfast sausage patty is 16 grams of protein and 150 calories. The protein shake I drink is almost 300 calories (bariatric advantage with PB2 over a plant based milk). Also, bone broth, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, tuna are all high protein, low calorie options that taste way better than protein shakes. If a person is able to meet protein goals and still stay around 600 calories a day during weight loss phase, why the shakes? (I don't know if that's feasible, I haven't tried it - I am still drinking the nasty protein). So, I posted the question to the online support group my surgeon keeps on Facebook. I asked if a person can meet their daily protein goal through real food, are protein shakes still required. Man! You would have thought I asked if I could eat a full meat lovers pizza from Papa John's! People launched on me, accused me of eating too much food, told me if I wanted to lose weight and maintain it I HAD to drink protein shakes for life. Then the surgeon came on and publicly shamed me, said I was way off track and wasn't following the plan. What bomb did I set off??? And nobody ever explained WHY the shakes are required??? The previous time before this when I asked a question, almost the same thing happened. I asked if I could drink the Unjury ready made shakes instead of the powder because they taste so much better. People berated me, and told me the ready made shakes were not good for me. Then the surgeon chimed in and said the ready made were not as good because they are protein caseinate instead of whey isolate. Um, the packaging clearly says the Unjury brand is whey protein isolate. So now why are they bad for me? The next day, my surgeon posted a long post about people having this surgery and not taking it seriously. I can't help but think it was in response to my question about protein shakes. I didn't even have Facebook, I deleted it in 2016 when things started to get so nasty online. I only started using it again to join my surgeon's group. I cancelled following the page. I was really ticked off at the responses. I'm so angry I don't even want to continue with my surgeon's office. AND, by the way, I am not way off track, I've lost 41 lbs. in these last 7 weeks, and I'm really happy with that. Started at 235, now 194 (and have been losing about 1 lb a day for the last few days). I know I'm being a baby, I think I just needed to vent.   12. Caffeine is an appetite suppressant, but I think for me, it's more that the warm liquid fills me up, because I used to hate eating soups for this reason - I would feel all bloated and gross. The earl grey tea was my first caffeine in 6 weeks, so that may have been more of a suppressant that it would normally be. I had to be off caffeine for 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after, and technically that was one day early, but I was desperate and I really like earl grey. Today is my first time having caffeinated coffee, but I only like iced coffee. I will see if the caffeine in the iced coffee keeps me full. Interestingly, I have no other effects from caffeine - I can have caffeine right before bed and it doesn't prevent me from sleeping, and it doesn't wake me up particularly. I didn't get any headaches when I stopped the caffeine. Oh, I guess it does make me poop.
  13. Have I misunderstood? You've lost 56lb in about two months or just a little under that? I think what you've lost is great. Some professionals or those who deem themselves to be seem to set some unrealistic expectations. Were you happy with your weight loss up to the point in time your dietician told you otherwise? 10kms a day is quite a lot. I assume you are followng your post op guidelines for calories, volumes of food, types of food etc? Protein intake? Liquid intake? And hopefully consuming sufficient to sustain 10kms a day. If so and your are averaging a reasonable weight loss you are doing great. Editied to add: You mention you stopped losing weight? How long since you've lost some weight on the scale? Stalls are not uncommon, most of everyone who has WLS has a stall or more than one, even in the first few weeks.

    Hi Peeps, I had my Gastric bypass (RnY) on Aug 17. My stats are as follows. SW: 302 lbs Height: 169 cm. CW: 246 lbs. Total lost: 56 lbs Exercise: Walking 10km daily However, I'm feeling I'm not losing fast enough, my dietitian thinks I should be losing about 4 lbs a week. I'm worried that I'm going to ruin this. Any tips on how to lose faster. Would really appreciate the help. Thank you.
  16. Honestly, I probably do focus on what I’m eating more now but the focus is how much protein, is there sugar in this, etc. So I focus more on the nutritional value of what I eat. Also before I used to skip meals. Now I try to make sure to eat more regularly. I cooked before surgery & I still cook. I prep most of my food so I can control the ingredients & how they’re cooked & I do cook a little more often - one because of prepping lunch now & I’ve dropped my once a week takeaway. I randomly check calories & portion sizes to make sure I’m on track & not over or under estimating. I also cleaned out my pantry, fridge & freezer in the first months. Got rid of all the food I couldn’t or didn’t want to eat anymore. If it’s not in the cupboard I can’t eat it. If I don’t buy it, I can’t eat it either. As @The Greater Fool said it can be an obsess ion if you let it or want it to be. How rigid/flexible do you want to be in your food choices? Your dietician should be a good source of possible eating plans & food options that fit in with your lifestyle, family, etc. You will have to make some changes. If you go back to eating exactly as you did before you will end up where you were before surgery. Remember, there is no one right way to eat just the way that’s right for you.     No weight loss

    This is the infamous Week 3 Stall that happens to most of us, and will typically last 1-3 weeks. Mine hit one week after surgery and I'm only now just coming out of it. It's definitely frustrating, but completely normal. Your body has just gone through a major trauma and has had its wiring rearranged. It needs to take small "time-outs" to have a think about how the new system is going to work - which is what drives a stall. So stay off the scale, keep doing what you need to do, and your body will get back to losing once it's had a little time to adjust. When you think about what your body has to do, it's really amazing that it only wants a couple of weeks pause! My scale number fluctuated a whole kilogram during my stall, which isn't fat gain so don't worry about that. You'll get back to losing once the stall breaks - and it will. There's thousands of threads on the forum about stalls, so do a search of those if you want to see what good company you're in. Stalls will happen more than once, it's just part of the process.

    Post op lag

    I had that ‘lag’ too. I think it is the lack of calories and the lowered amount of water. It took me about 2-3 weeks to get through it. Now, 3.5 months out, my body got used to the lack of food and I have so much energy! Remember that you just went through a major surgery and your body is healing….take care of yourself! At this point make sure you practice at drinking more and start focusing on meeting your protein goal. It will get better! Oh, and take naps when you can, they help!

    September Surgeries!

    No I have not tried that. I’ll have to though. I love this site, so many ideas that would never cross my mind. And I hope so. It will make 3 weeks on Friday and same. Have had no more than 600 calories a day and I work out 2-3 times a week depending on my knees and ankle. And still Not a pound lost since the initial weight loss after surgery. I do feel feel relieved knowing this will pass. Lol. Thank you for the encouragement and the advice. I will try that!

    September Surgeries!

    I know the feeling! I stalled the second week post-op despite barely making 500 calories a day and exercising regularly, but I did a google search on why it happens, and reading that put me at ease. Made a lot of sense, and knowing that it's super common also helps. You'll break yours soon. Have you tried a little diet cordial in water to see if that helps? I've never been a soda or sweet drink person, so water and I have always gotten along well, but I know for folks who have an aversion to it, diet cordials help. Also protein waters - double your fun!
  21. I’ve always loved soup so I make it a few times a month (even pre surgery I loved soup!). And I keep in the fridge and usually end up eating it for a meal a day while I have it. Meals don’t have to be hard after surgery- yogurt, curries, eggs, roasted meats in light gravies, and smoothies are all staples in my diet. If I make a roast on Sunday I can use it for different things trough the week. One cook and meals for a week with the only though being do I want a burrito bowl or have it with gravy and a veggie mash. It all depends on how much you do or don’t want to do.

    September Surgeries!

    That is so exciting that your stall has let up. I can’t wait. I feel like I’ll be stuck at this weight for a while. But I am ok with that. I’m just grateful I am feeling better than I was before. I am the opposite. I wish I was not but the one thing that always got me was I like sweet drinks. I seriously probably drank most of my calories before the surgery and that was something I had to work on months before the surgery. I hate water. My husband gets on me all the time about how I don’t drink enough of it and now I’m trying so hard to get the recommended water in I just can’t stand it. So that could be my issue as well. And thank you so much 😊 I feel so much better already. Best of luck on your journey! And I’ve definitely had the cramping drinking water. It is horrible.

    I grew my own lettuce for salad! I have enough more for a salad a day for at least a week. 😳 No leftovers for me as it was stolen by a child…. Who is now eating my pumpkin seeds. 😒
  24. It's funny, I tried to set 130 as my "redline" weight but my mind and emotions had other ideas. When I hit 127, my anxiety level is such that I immediately start working on getting it back down. So my de facto limit is 127, LOL. I was the same way. My self-imposed "happy weight range" is 115-120. I made a deal with myself that if I ever reach 120 for five days in a row, I have to work to get all the way back to 115. And like you, when I get to like 118, i'm all: Crap! I may as well drop a lb or two now instead of having to lose 5 if/when i reach 120. I've had to do it 3 times in the past 3 years and it gets progressively longer to do (1 wk, then 3 weeks, then 3 months)....so, yeah. During the 3 month long attempt to get back to 115 (albeit, i didn't try very hard), I was seriously considering upping my happy weight range, though. If it happens again, I just might. We'll see. Now, on the other side of things, I don't worry too much if i drop below 115, as when I have, it doesn't last very long (except for the couple months after plastics), and it goes back to 115-ish with zero effort.
  25. Sweet things for me also. It was mild at first, but three weeks out and getting the protein shakes and protein water down isn't fun. I have a less sweet protein shake that's not as bad, but I really don't like sweet things at all. I have a physical reaction to them a bit like a blood-sugar dip, which is irritating because in order to meet my protein intake, I unfortunately need these drinks.
