why no carbs phase two?
Nancy Rivers replied to ladiebashful's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You want to use the Greek yogurt that is not "pre-sweetened" - no fruit, no honey, no jelly. Carb Smart, Fage Total or the like that are plain. You can use SF syrups like Torani or Da Vinci to sweeten up the yogurt if needed. This will get your carbs lower. The yogurts that are pre-sweetened have way too many carbs. You want to be on a relatively low carb, low fat, high Protein diet for the first 6 weeks at least (possibly the first 6 months) to 1) allow your sleeve to heal and 2) so you will start burning your fat reserves instead of getting your energy from the carbs that are in the food. It will help promote the faster weight loss that is expected in the first 6 months. -
How do you bounce back after having a bad day?
samuelsmom replied to Sajijoma's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
First off, take a deep breath. You can do this! I agree that there is a Water issue also. So, unless you have some type of medical condition where drinking a ton of fluids would be bad for you, I would suggest the following: 1) You can't change yesterday. Be glad you had a good time and move on. Recriminations will only set you back. 2) Drink a lot of water. Water is a natural diuretic. If you drink a lot it will help with the water retention. 3) I find that 24 hours of liquids beneficial- for example- nothing but Protein shakes and greek yogurt and water is great for a "reset" physically and mentally 4) Write down everything you eat to stay accountable. 5) If you went through childbirth and have to care for a toddler, you can definitely do this! -
Frustrated! Eat This, Not That....
mnbsleeve replied to rohnk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Rohnk! I don't know how far out you are from surgery. At about 9 months out certain foods tend to "fill me up" quickly. Eggs is one of them! A couple of bites and I feel done! In the begining I became very lactose intolerant so I could not have milk or cottage cheese etc., so I had soy milk with my protein and it worked out. But I know many drank/drink milk with no problem. I now can have dairies without a problem - fortunately. Regardign the amoun, I tend to focus on how I feel more so than the amount I consume. So for example, if I serve myself 8 oz of soup but I start to feel comfortable at about 4 or 5 oz., I stop and save the rest for later. Sometimes just one bite will push me over that edge to discomfort so I take it slow. To give you an idea of quantity, at nine months I am still eating between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of food, certain foods like yogurt I can comfortably eat about 1 cup. But again, that is rare for me to go that far. I also know others can eat a bit more at this stage. I hope this is helpful to you. Best of luck!!! -

Fat Consumption For A Day..
fluffylibra30 replied to VJSlim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
a lot of "light" foods have artifical sweeteners which arent that good for you. I agree we eat such small quanties a little bit of fat wont hurt. I looked at a box of Cheeze its last week, the "light" ones had only 10 less calories 2 less grams of fat BUT had 3 more grams of carbs. Whats up with that? i would eat greek yogurt then add some frozen fruit for flavor. the extra calories from the greek yogurt are worth it for all the extra protein! Good luck. -
I don't know how I did this. For the first two weeks I was on Clear liquids and stuck to it except for a couple times when I had some mashed potatoes or a blended Soup. I'm supposed to be on full liquids until the 8th and then mushies. I just felt so good I started eating solids, albeit very healthy ones. I have lost 30 pounds all together (18 post-op) and hit a stall at 3 weeks that seems to have broken today after I went down a pound. THE QUESTION: Should I go a step back and go back totally on full liquids? It doesn't seem like cream Soups are all that healthy, but I still do cottage cheese and yogurt every day. Cucumber gave me pause, but broccoli, carrots, squash and Beans are fine. In fact, there is nothing I can't seem to eat so far. eggs, cheese, chicken, pork, beef, fish - all fine. I didn't do this flippantly, It just seemed to be feel normal. I go between 550-650 calories a day. Here is a days menu: Total 591 Cals. 22.7 Fat (g) 28.9 Carbs (g) 69.3 Protein (g) Milk, 2% fat 6 oz MaxProteinVanilla 1 serving Tuna, fresh raw 3 oz Somersaults Pacific Sea Salt 1/2 serving (Low carb, high protein cracker things) Cheese, cottage, lowfat, 2% 1/4 cup Cucumber 5 slices Cheese,Blue 1/8 cup Cheese,Ricotta 1/8 cup Salami, dry 1 slice P.S. The Salami and riccota cheese is an Eggface recipe in which you take a slice of salami, put it into a mini muffin pan and fill it with ricotta cheese seasoned with spices and topped with a tiny bit of mozzerella cheese. They are savory little protein cupcakes that are to die for. I made mine smaller and cut the egg yolk. The greek yogurt and gorganzolla or blue cheese is another Eggface recipe. It makes a great dip. Everything she makes is geared with protein in mind. If you dip your meats or veggies, you may as well do it high protein instead of using commercial dressings or sauces.

No Seminar - Vitamins - Ocean/Swim - 9 days post: HELP
GassyGurl replied to AlabamaSleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We were told no swimming for 2 weeks. My incisions are totally closed by day 10 (with 1 exception). My plan was always to use 3m waterproof bandaids if I wanted to swim earlier. I have no pain either and feel great. We start vitamins at 2 weeks. I'm using store brand Flintstones complete for now, but they are sort of gross. I wonder if name brand tastes better? I have the calcium, but I drink a lot of milk and yogurt, so I'm not sure if I will actually take it. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Had my 1st Post-Op Appointment today!
StewsHunnyBunny replied to StewsHunnyBunny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on soft foods still.. I am not really looking forward to total solids right now. I am still eating only cooked veggies. I have not tried salads or anything. I have started using my Wii Fit and I am hoping that it will get be back to loosing again, as I have stopped loosing.. I hope I get a fill next month. Right now I am having problems with cravings.. I want (fresh)fruit SO BAD and the fruit is out of season.. *sigh* I think I am going to go get more vanilla yogurt... so I can add in some frozen fruit.. hope that helps me!! -
Once I was healed I was told to stop drinking Protein shakes. The band is meant to work with solids not liquids. Excluding the 24 hours after a fill. If you can't eat solids at Breakfast I highly recommend Greek yogurt with a half scoop Protein powder (and splendra to taste). I also recommend measuring lunch and dinner protein to 3 oz. You will be amazed how little that is; if you don't measure you will over eat. Proein shakes can be very high in calories it really depends on the brand.

Has anyone done this? I am looking to re-motivate myself and I want to do the 5 day pouch test to help "go back to the basics." I feel like I am not paying attention to what I am eating or how much I am consuming. I have a few questions though... Days 1&2 are like the basic liquid diet post-op, right? Days 3-5 I understand are different consistencies of Protein.... When you get to day 4 or 5, can you include the protein consistencies from 3 and 4? Like can you have steamed scallops and then a peice of baked chicken on the same day..?! And what can you eat for Breakfast? Protein shake in the am and the soft/firm/solid Proteins for lunch and dinner? What about fruits and veggies?! Can I have that with the protein?! What about yogurt?!

I can't get enough food in to meet my 1000 to 1200 calories per day goal without at least one snack (my yogurt) a day. I wasn't losing as well under 1000 calories....you have to feed your metabolism!

Yes, my nutritionist told me I could eat VERY soft veggies... cooked to mushy stage... so that's what I did. I used the boiled chicken mostly (with a variety of sauces for added moisture, sometimes very softly sauteed onions, peppers) and stayed away from high carbs (no Pasta, breads, rice, etc.) with the exception of mashed potato and sweet potato. I ate a lot of boiled yellow squash during that phase... and even now, I find it a good veggie to add to whatever portein I'm eating because it's very soft and not dry. (I usually keep a cooked bowl in the fridge.) I allowed myself olive oil to cook with, but sparingly. I hardly ever use butter any more, the spray butter works great for me. I usually cooked up a good batch of boiled chicken then portioned it out in the little Gladware containers that hold 1/2 cup. That way it was portioned and ready to go when I needed it. I'd do the same with my potato and veggies. Scrambled eggs or egg beaters with lite shredded cheese was usually Breakfast , and cottage cheese or potato with cheese was a staple as a snack or alternative lunch. (I'm not a yogurt eater) It didn't bother me to eat a lot of the same things to get through the "mushy stage"... the joy of eating "normal" food came quickly enough and the great weight loss during that phase was really encouraging! Some people experience gains before their fills, but it wasn't the case for me. I stuck to the rule, Protein first, then veggies.. I could easily eat up to 2 cups of food then, (usually 1/2 c protien, rest veggies...) but still lost weight because my food choices were healthy. I can't eat that amount now, (now maybe 1/2- 1 cup per meal) but the discipline of eating healthy foods has stayed with me so far! Don't worry, you're going to do GREAT! :cheer2:

Can Someone Share Their Soft Texture Menu?

Thank you, if you don't mind me asking how far post op are you? I am 23 days and the only thing that settle well in my stomach are yogurt and protein shakes and I am tired of both of them. I have tried chicken salad, egg, mashed potatoe and nothing set well in my stomach. -

Sample Daily Menu for Soft Foods?
_Kate_ replied to workerbeemama26's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Soft cooked scrambled eggs, high Protein yogurt, chunkier home made chicken or vegitable Soups mushed up really well, protein puddings, Weetabix, porridge, Ready Brek with plenty of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk add Protein powder if you can, finely minced or pureed chicken or turkey in gravy, pureed fish in a thin sauce, light and smooth low-fat and low-sugar mousse made with milk - add protein powder if you can, very gently cooked and soft plain omelette, poached egg or a soft-boiled one, soft Beans, lentils and peas, pureed or mashed for a little texture, pureed avocado, small portions of home-cooked or ready-prepared and pureed main dishes like cottage pie, shepherd’s pie, fish pie, fish-in-sauce, mild chilli con carne. Congrats on the surgery! Did your team not give you foods to have in each stage? -
Ok, so last night i was feeling a little less than ideal, but this morning was the worst. This is day 8, and the pain was as bad as ever--felt like i was going backwards. I guess it was gas, in my abdomen and shoulder, which was weird cuz my shoulder was never really hurting prior to today. I called the surgeon's office, and they called me like 3 times throughout the day to check on me, which was nice. They said it sounded typical, but to let them know if it got any worse. Sucks, cuz i was all excited abt advancing to soup and yogurt, and barely had anything today because i was n so much pain. I basically slept all day and had one trip to the bathroom. Doing better now, but wow, what was that? Anybody else have what felt like a setback at this point post op? Thanks for reading...

Day 1 On Mushies And Stomach Feels Weird
AliveAgain replied to Meredit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine spazzed after trying tuna, which was in my NUT's post-surgery guide for the mushy stage. But then my doctor freaked out when I told him. He said tuna is NOT a mushy stage appropriate food. He said that making a puree paste may give me and my stomach an aversion to it, told me to hold off until week 4-5 for that. Try to keep to true mushies until then: low-fat or fat-free SMALL curd cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt, soft tofu, poached eggs, and maybe Laughing Cow Swiss Cheese wedges. Even scrambled eggs can be too much. Listen to your body and take it easy when it tells you to rest. Anytime I feel like the mushy was too much, I keep to liquids for the rest of the day and give it another try when it feels better. If the pain doesn't go away in a day or so, call your doctor. Maybe try some chamomile or decaf green tea to ease the spazzing? -
My first mashed potatoes were awesome! Our diets sound pretty much the same with the cream soup and yogurt. I added avocados because they were just as awesome as the potatoes. You can also eat baby food. Also so you don't eat too fast put your fork down for a least a minute before you take another bite. Good luck moving forward!

Lunch for me was greek yogurt with blueberries and blackberries.

I would say to skip the latte and eat either cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, egg and cheese or some more Protein packed thing for Breakfast. Try skipping the whole wheat wrap and maybe cut the cream cheese in half or use Greek yogurt with maybe something mixed in it. I also found some crackers that are high in protein that I eat for some crunchiness. There are also high protein, low carb breads out there, but I only use half a slice or so. I mix my Protein shakes with 6 oz. of 2% instead of 8 oz. I can drink 6 oz. easily on the way to work. Then again, it could be a stall. Someone explained stalls to me. Something about glycogen and Water storage. They eventually break. Also, sometimes more calories are better than less. but make them good calories. The salmon is great. Have you tried shrimp, scallops or ahi tuna? All are excellent protein sources. Also try cardio and weight training.

Thanks for the input! I see my surgeon on Tues so we will talk about it then...in the meantime, I am going to have some yogurt! And yes, I take pepcid, but I was supposed to take it twice a day and have only been taking it once, maybe I should step it up!

My new tummy was sized over a 40 bougie, It really depends on the surgeons technique. As for four cups, it depend on 4 cups of what. You will never be able to eat 4 cups of solid Protein, such as beef, pork, chicken, or fish. But you probably will be able to eat 4 cups of popcorn. I'm almost a year out. For Breakfast, I had 1 cup of greek yogurt, mixed with 1/3 cup berries and on the side I had oatmeal (1/4 cup oatmeal cooked in 1/2 cup water). I was full and it took be about 30 minutes to eat. For lunch I had chicken salad (3 oz. chicken breast, 1/3 small apple, 2 T. dried cranberries, 1 tsp. walnuts, 2 T. lite mayo and a small handful of spinach) with about 10 whole grain wheat thin crackers. For a snack this afternoon I had 1 oz. of pretzels. For dinner I plan to have 3 oz. of shrimp with 1/4 cup cocktail sauce and another handful of spinach. For a late night snack, I will have a couple of cups of popcorn and a small orange. Lynda
