    March 2015 Surgery!

My surgery was March 10th so just over 3 weeks ago. In the beginning I drank a protein shake with a Greek yogurt and a banana mixed in it. It had around 30-40 grams of protein. It really helped with the weakness. No belly pain for me thank goodness. I'm able to eat pretty much anything at this point and looking forward to getting a fill.
  3. I use the dannon greek yogurt and add Isopure for a whooping 37grams total. It's good for 2 of my mini meals on full liquids.
  4. Dannon Fit & Light makes an amazing yogurt drink with 17 grams of protein. I am on the purée stage and still reach for them for breakfast.

    Travel after sleeve.

You will be a month post-op you should be fine. I wouldn't do any heavy lifting or anything, you can just supervise as far as nutrition what will your stage be at that point? Purée? You can find things in the airport like hummus, pudding, yogurt ect..I take nursing contracts In Hawaii (Oahu) once you get there they have tons of food you can find something to fit your diet.

    Discouraged...

Hi, I live in Orange County..I have really lost slow in 2 months I've lost approx. 10-12 lbs..I eat healthy most of the time & if I kinda cheat I have frozen yogurt...which I love...where u get fills I wonder if they would give me a feel since I didn't have the surgery there, I have to drive to Mexico where I had the Surgery which is a pain in the a..I would love to hear any suggestions. I'm now exercising 3 times a week & eat healthy..I don't eat very much throughout the day, so don't know why it's coming off soo slow. I do however have only 6lbs or so to loose I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I would be a cash payment for fills if u could find out if he would give them to me that would be awesome..Thanks so much for reaching out to me... Jen 714.366.2600
  7. Make sure you are on the solid proteins if your diet allows. Yogurts, ricotta and all that are slider foods. I was told by docs office to get solid proteins in with three meals and that has made all the difference. I think we are still figuring this thing out as I had my surgery 2,weeks before u... Learning what works and what doesn't. Drinking water helps also and I had to up my carb intake ( complex) to curb hunger and do more exercise to speed metabolism and burn it off.
  8. I feel pressure too in my belly and my chest. Very uncomfortable feeling. Started soft/puréed foods a week ago. Getting about half way through a cup of yogurt. If I try to do more than that I get that feeling.

    March Sleevers

Good evening everyone! It's encouraging to read that the majority of you are doing well with your recent surgeries. I am 10 days out and every day I am feeling a bit better. It has been challenging getting the protein and fluids in. I am up to two premier proteins and one thinned greek yogurt a day with about 40 ounces of water. Today was the second day I was able to do that. I am not putting too much stock into what the scale is telling me because I am all over the place. I was down three pounds yesterday and then again today. This must be fluid loss from surgery. Nobody loses three pounds a day! One thing that shocked me is that the Syntrax Nectars I seemed to love before surgery all taste disgusting to me right now. They are literally gagging me. I had to go buy some premier shakes which aren't the best but I am tolerating them. I still find myself staring at the potato chips every time I go in the kitchen and asked my husband to hide them if he is going to eat them. That is my crack! To date, I am down 14 pounds from surgery and 53 pounds total since Jan 29th when I began this crazy journey. I have no regrets thus far but I am really getting sick of liquids!!! I have been daydreaming about food that is off limits! The head hunger is still there!!! It's the worst.

    Week 2 Soft Foods

I am 8 days post op and started "pre-selected" soft foods. I will be doing this for two weeks (1 ounce every other hour). Foods include: cottage cheese low carb yogurt sugar free pudding (with added Protein powder) egg beaters I supplement with Protein shakes.
  11. Hi all- I have had a major stop of the scale. i am able to eat much more now than i could three months ago, and even though i'm eating about 1100 cals a day, the scale is not moving at all.i have been at this same weight for about 14 wks. i don't know if this is just a HUGE LONG stall, or if i am back-sliding. i want to jump start things again so i can lose the last 20 lbs and reach goal by my one-year anniversary. i KNOW i need to go back to shakes, broth, SF Jello, yogurt, etc. anybody have any good suggestions further than this? the weather in my area has finally broke, so i am able to get back outside and walk again, that should help too. thanks!

    Protein

Keep trying different ways of getting in your Protein. Those protein goals take time to build up to so don't panic if you don't meet them right away. Keep trying protein drinks/powders until you find what you like. I tried at least 10 different ones as a trial run pre-op and I've probably gone through another 4 -5 post-op. A few I still have occasionally, but there are 2 I consistently use; Isopure unflavored and CVS whey protein vanilla flavor. I don't think I hit my protein goals until somewhere between weeks 1 and 2 post-op and that was just the basic goal of 60gms. I know hit between 80 - 100 everyday. Unflavored powder that can be mixed with Soups is a nice break from the sweet drinks. Mixing them with Water helps you meet you Fluid goals and lesson the super sweet taste. If you are allowed yogurt, 0% greek yogurt will also cut the sweet taste. Try mixing the Protein Powder with water and a bit of greek yogurt until it's a thinner drinkable consistency. The greek yogurt (I use FAGE 0%) adds a bit more protein and the slightly sour taste will cut some of the sweet of the protein powder.

    Week 2 Soft Foods

I would skip the pastina unless you were specifically told you could have it. I know its teeny tiny but it IS still Pasta. At 7 days I was allowed hummus and purees, applesauce, yogurt, cream Soups, scrambled egg, mashed up tuna or other soft fish, cottage cheese, etc. No Bread or pasta until at least 8 weeks out according to my protocol. No rice for even longer. I doubt I will eat much pasta, bread or rice EVER, but I have had a cracker or pretzel stick now at 5 weeks out, and I may have a little high Protein wheat toast on occasion when I am 8 weeks out. Congrats & best of luck to you!

    Reversal for gastric sleeve?

I am so sorry you are in such a bad place and your surgeon is a jerk. You can't do Protein shakes so let's figure out another way to get your protein in that doesn't make you gag. These are my suggestions to start with. If you want to try some of these, check out Nashua Nutrition's website to order single serving sizes of any of the protein they sell. -Have you tried the different flavors of Syntrax nectar? They are more fruit/ koolaid type of protein instead of the milk based drinks. - what about making a fruit smoothie that doesn't have protein powder in it? Try using Greek yogurt, the Torani sugar free syrup, frozen fruit, maybe ground flax seed if you like it. - how about getting your protein entirely from food sources and cut out the protein powder completely? The World According to Eggface blog has a ton of great recipes using real food. It may take a little while of trailing food to see what works for both your taste preferences and your sleeve. -Quest Protein Bars? I love the chocolate chip cookie dough flavor and it has easily become one of my favorite foods. You can buy single Quest bars in different flavors at GNC to try and see if you like them. - there is a liquid gel concentrate made by the brand Proti Diet that tastes very much like crystal light or sugar free koolaid and it isn't a powder. I have tried both the pink lemonade and the grape flavors and I really enjoy them. The packets are liquid and mix easily without any clumping or grit. Please hang in there. Let us help you find a way to establish a truce between you and your sleeve. Unfortunately, the surgery is a permanent change. I hope you feel better about this decision soon. Please try to find a more supportive surgeon who is willing to take over your care. It is an important relationship and needs to be comfortable for you.
  15. If you cannot tolerate the shakes, don't drink them. Find other ways to get in your Protein. I use an unflavored protein powder that I mix with pretty much everything. I add it into yogurt (a natural source of protein), I add it into Soups, I add it into coffee & tea, hot or cold. It can also be added to a 50/50 mix of fruit juice/water or stirred into a bit of apple sauce or mashed potatoes. A few brands of unflavored protein powders are Isopure unflavored, unjury and GENEPRO. One of the key things I did to get in more water/fluids was to add loads of ice to everything. Instead of traditional protein shakes try protein waters like propel. Again you are getting in protein AND Fluid at the same time. The shaking may be a symptom of dehydration. Please try to get your fluids in at all cost. I am sorry that it was not explained to you that a large portion of your stomach is cut away. Hopefully the suggestions in this post will help you make the best of it.

    Anybody Stricture!

How are you doing? I had a stricture at 7 weeks out. It was 97% closed and I couldnt eat anything but yogurt and cottage cheese without pain. They did the balloon stretching but perforated the stricture. I had open emergency surgery so they could revise the opening. It definitely wasnt fun at all.
  17. Hi there... I switched from the lapband to the gastric sleeve 9 days ago and I am feeling stuck! I was dropping weight like crazy the first few days home (I was in the hospital for 4 days), but already seem to have "plateaued" which is INSANE and makes no sense. Day of surgery I weighed 279lbs and Saturday I weighed in at 273lbs... but I havent lost any more weight since! I am full liquids still and eating between 400 and 600 calories a day AND walking at least 30 minutes a day. Has anyone else had this issue?! I am thinking maybe its because I have not had a bowel movement since the day before surgery (although have been taking benefiber and a stool softener!)?! Could it be Water retention or my body going in to shock and trying to store fat because not getting fed?! I just feel like its physically impossible to maintain 273lbs for 4 days when I am consuming so few calories. Here is what my days have typically looked like: Morning: Drink 8oz of water or crystal light, wait 45 minutes, then drink a Celebrate 4 in 1 ENS Protein shake (150 calories 25g protein) Mid Morning: Drink 8oz of water or crystal light or Vitamin crystals Lunch: Drink half of a premier Protein Shake (1/2 would be 80 cals and 15g protein). Wait 45 minutes then drink another 8oz of water Afternoon: Eat 3 to 4 oz of greek yogurt (100 calories 12g protein). Wait 45 minutes then drink more water... Dinner: Eat 3 to 4oz of pureed chili (100 calories 10g protein). Wait 45 min then drink more water Snack: Finish other half of premier shake ((1/2 would be 80 cals and 15g protein) Any thoughts? :/

3 week liquid diet post op

No yogurt for me yet. That's on the puree stage. I didn't add any protein, mainly because what I have is all flavored. Im switching off between Body Fortress (bought it at walmart) strawberry and the chocolate peanut butter. The peanut butter one doesn't (didnt) taste awful..until this morning. Maybe because I had the popsicle and soup last night. I have a vanilla protein powder but can't use it yet because it's 30 grams of protein and my Dr only wants me to get 20 per day as of right now.
  19. Tomato soup sounds so good...did u add protein to it?? If so what kind are you using? I put a scoop of Isopure in my greek yogurt this morning giving me 37grams this moring. Happy with that start!

    Tomato Soup

I wasn't allowed to have tomato soup until I was on the regular diet, at least 4 weeks out. I'm guessing this was due to the acidity. How about cream of chicken soup (made with milk)? Also fat free, sugar free pudding or yogurt.

3 week liquid diet post op

You people are doing great. The trick in the first few weeks is to do the best you can. Drink as much water as possible. For me, and I'm a whopping five months out now, the most amazing thing was that my tastes in food changed a lot. So I would look forward to having something like tuna only to find out I could not stand it. Eventually I started thinking more about sustainability rather than worrying about enjoyment. Sure there are things I miss or want from time to time. But I find ways to appreciate my shrinking body more than a bowl of ice cream or whatever. Sugar free popsies saved me in the beginning, and now I've had two boxes in my freezer for a couple of months. I promise. You'll get used to it one way and it will all change. When I was on puréed, I loved puréed bean soup with a bit of Greek yogurt thrown in. and peppermint tea is still a lifesaver for me. keep going. And when you pick up a 20-pound bag of groceries, think about the fact you used to carry that weight. I'm so grateful.

    Backed Up!

Hey yall... sorry for the TMI but I need some suggestions. I literally have not had a bowel movement since a day before my surgery 8 days ago... I am still on full liquid so have been doing protein shakes and yogurt etc., but nothing! I have reduced my percocet intake to 1 every 4 to 6 hours and I know that can really contribute too. I have used a stool softener/laxative for two days now and nothing. I called my doc and he recommended milk of magnesia but I don't think I can stomach that stuff. Anyone else struggle with this right after surgery and have any suggestions? I am drinking Celebrate ENS 4 in 1 shakes which have fiber in them too but clearly not enough :/.

Any MedSurg Nurses who've been sleeved?

I am a Nurse on a multispecialty (med/surg/tele/neuro/ortho) floor. I work 12.5 hour days. I went back 3 weeks after my surgery. I had my surgery 2 months ago. The first few shifts were a struggle. I brought my protein shakes, water, and a yogurt in on my first day. I was only able to drink about 8 oz all day of my water since I could only take sips, I drank 1 of my 2 protein drinks. Now I make it a priority to take all my breaks, which I had never done before, and sip water throughout the whole day. I realized that if I was feeling sick and dehydrated I could not give great patient care so it benefits a few minutes away every hour or so to get in those sips and eat a high protein meal at lunch. We cannot have any food or drinks beyond our staff lounge so it takes a conscious effort to make sure I get in there as much as possible. I feel great now, a lot more energy at work than before my sleeve. Down 30lbs too!!
  25. @samuelsmom I love the Light & Fit Greek yogurt!
