58 y.o. female looking for others my age who have had gastric bypass
beachgal2935 replied to Pamela Diamond's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I'm 53 and would love to be a part of this group. My surgery date is April 21st at Mayo Hospital! I start my 2 week pre-op Optifast liquid diet April 7th so I'm trying to soak up any and all information, tips, etc. I can get. I'm trying different Protein drinks to see which ones I like best. I purchased GENEPRO which supposedly has no taste and have added it to different drinks. I can taste it but can tolerate it and at 30 grams of protein for just 1 TBS, it's hard to beat. My favorite pre-made shake so far is EAS Carb Advantage which is 100 calories and 17g of protein. Has anyone tried unjury? My nutritionist told me yesterday that's what they use in the hospital. I'm thinking about ordering the sampler. Thank you for and advice you can share. -
This is just my opinion which means nothing, BUT, there are Bariatric clinics who recommend GenePro. It isn't "bad" for you in the sense of being a bad product. Now does it contain 30 grams of protein, prolly not, more like 15-20. Is it pure protein, prolly not, but if you are eating a diet rich in protein it's not that serious. If your doctor is fine with the product and your blood work is fine then enjoy. I used it the first month with no problems but it was recommended by my doctor because I could not get protein shakes down until 8 weeks post op. It's a personal choice but in no way is it poisoned and harmful, just factually overrated perhaps. Your decision.

Anyone 21 and doing this
Shell425 replied to TheNewSamanthaSmiles17's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ur moms got a good name! Lol well before surgery I bought some GENEPRO Protein powder (it's best mixed with hot tea or coffee) and Protein shakes to try and boost my protein intake, I don't think it actually helped with the surgery, but it helped get me used to all the not so wonderfully tasting protein supplements I got to look forward to post surgery. I feel great that I had the surgery! Of course the first 12-24 hours are the absolute worse, but once you get past that, the pain subsides and Ull be up and walking pretty soon. I know not all drs put in drains, but if u end up getting one, just know that if your in pain after the first day, it's most likely cause by that. Or gas. Ull hear it all over this forum, but it's for a reason! after surgery, walk walk walk!! It's the only thing that will relieve gas pain! I'm still on the full liquid stage right now so I can't really share anything I've enjoyed since surgery except sugar free Jello. Lol if ur a reader, bring a book. I brought my cell, books, and laptop to the hospital with me, I don't think I even took my laptop out of my bag the whole time I was there (which was only 3 days, 2 nights) I slept a lot of the time or I was roaming the hall. Since my brother was there with me I walked to his room a lot and we just say and talked about how weird we felt, or where we were having pain, etc. we were still in shock that either if us actually went thru with it so there was a lot to talk about. good luck to you! -
I'm 2.5 months post op gastric bypass. I'd been going to the gym every single day, sometimes 2-3 times a day. (It's become my new way of dealing with stress and my new social thing to do besides going out to eat with friends) Tuesday I met with a trainer because I was cleared by my Dr. for core workouts but was told to really ease into it. I was completely transparent with the trainer who told me he'd known and worked with other people with my predicament and that I'd be fine. I told him I had a lot of atrophy and was pretty sure I was malnourished and dehydrated often but that I was working hard on it. He had me stand on some scale thing that you hold the handles on and it sends some electro type pulses through you to separate the fluid from bone muscle and fat and stuff so it can read how your weight is distributed throughout. There's something in it that also reads your inflammation level and he said I had the highest he'd ever seen and also called a co-worker over to check it out and said congrats, you're a winner. After getting on the floor with him after the first set he had me do of squats I knew something was wrong. My legs immediately felt like spaghetti and I could barely stabilize myself. I told him it didn't feel right and he just said you're fine you can have 10 seconds and then did it again...so I did because I hate liking like a wimp (stupid pride) and again and again and lunges and ab excersise...i haven't been ale to walk well since. My legs keep going out from under me and I've nearly fallen down a few times just walking and at work (I stand all day and cut hair). It's Saturday morning and I woke up still in that day after kind of pain. I mean, I've worked with a trainer before and I know the pain but it's NEVER come on that quick and it's NEVER lasted this long or intensely. I swear I'm not being dramatic or whiney. I'm a little worried and not sure what to do. Plus I'm upset because it's now keeping me from working out anything besides my upper body which I can't do every day so I go to the gym and just sit somedays so I don't get out of the habit of going. If I'm being honest I'm really pissed at the negligence but I can't do anything about that and want to let it go so how do I make my legs feel better so I can start working out again??? Sorry about the long rant to anyone who actually made it through. (My own solution thus far is to add genepro to everything and try harder to get more fluids in) my friend says he's going to give me something called map pills but I don't know if I cantake those. I HATE I GOT THIS STUPID SURGERY!

Wow I’m sorry to hear you are going through a rough spot! Please know this though, It will get better eventually! I gad some rough spots too so I know you can do this! I’m a year out now and even with the rough spots would NEVER go back. What saved me was the no taste protein powder that I could add to broth, juice, water whatever I wanted. There are a few out there but I used one called genepro that you buy at GNC stores. It’s a smaller scoop and dissolved really good into anything. I remember struggling to get in enough liquids and this stuff saved me. I usually don’t post much anymore since I’m doing good now, but your post touched me because your having a rough time like I did. Good luck and keep thinking about where you will be in one short year 😀 -
GenePro makes a pretty good unflavored that you can add to broth. I like the syntrax as well. I bought 2 cases of premier protein and was gagging at the thought of them after day 5. Nashua Nutrition has samples for 2$ a scoop. Good Luck!!! You can do it!!

What Is Your Beverage of Choice?
shedo82773 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I pretty much drink flavored Water. I use the SF Crush packets, ORANGE AND GRAPE CRUSH. I also love Diet Peach Snapple Tea. I am also a coffee drinker, I have at least 1 cup per day made with my Keurig Coffee with added GENEPRO NONFLAVORED Protein. I love my coffee so it is a win win for me. I know some DR's say no coffee but mine never told me not to drink it. I have had no problems with it. I'm 3 yrs out and have been at my goal weight of 125#'s for 2 and 1/2 years. -
Reversal for gastric sleeve?
BLERDgirl replied to Gladys62's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you cannot tolerate the shakes, don't drink them. Find other ways to get in your Protein. I use an unflavored protein powder that I mix with pretty much everything. I add it into yogurt (a natural source of protein), I add it into Soups, I add it into coffee & tea, hot or cold. It can also be added to a 50/50 mix of fruit juice/water or stirred into a bit of apple sauce or mashed potatoes. A few brands of unflavored protein powders are Isopure unflavored, unjury and GENEPRO. One of the key things I did to get in more water/fluids was to add loads of ice to everything. Instead of traditional protein shakes try protein waters like propel. Again you are getting in protein AND Fluid at the same time. The shaking may be a symptom of dehydration. Please try to get your fluids in at all cost. I am sorry that it was not explained to you that a large portion of your stomach is cut away. Hopefully the suggestions in this post will help you make the best of it. -
I eat sugar free pudding with GENEPRO mixed in. I get yumminess and my Protein in. DS surgery 12/14/2016

I use Genepro with the approval of my NUT. IT IS AWESOME! Instead of a huge scoop it is just a tablespoon and has 30 grams of protein and 98 calories and I believe it's 3 carbs. You can mix it in hot or cold. I use a scoop of vanilla Unjury, a cup of skim milk, a little sugar free pudding powder I love the banana cream and add a tablespoon of Genepro and some ice cubes mis it in a blender and I get 59 grams of protein in one shake. I drink one every morning then I only have to get a little more protein to meet my goal and it's simple!

I have never heard of GENEPRO. I looked it up and all I found is a geneololgy sight. I really like unjury and nectaur protiens. I am a chocolate lover but can't seem to be able to like the chocolate Protein powders that need to be mixed. So with the unjury I use the strawberry and unflavored one. With the Nectaur brand I really like a whole slew of their fruit flavored Proteins. I mix my proteins with zero vitiman Water using just half the bottle. (10 oz.) They need to be mixed at room temperature and then if they can sit for 5 min. you can either put ice in the bottle or refridegerate it. This helps to avoid clumping. Use within 48 hours of mixing. I also have a premeir protein for my Breakfast most days. These are already to go (called RTD) and I like the choclate with this one so haven't tried their vanilla. They might have a strawberry out too. (?) Hope this helps.

Is there anything you wish you'd been told pre-op?
Everything replied to Pippa1703's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think you’re asking a broader question but I’m going to answer in terms of what I’ve experienced in the first week post op. I should’ve had a more realistic picture of what the first week would look like post surgery. The diet they gave me advanced too quickly for me. If it weren’t for these items I would not have made it through week one as comfortably! When I couldn’t get the vitamins down I had the patches. When I couldn’t get the minimum water AND protein shakes down I had the protein water. When the only “food” I could possibly consume was broth, these K-cups were quick, easy and helped me get in a little extra protein. (And the Genepro is probably just good to have all around. You can add it to the cream soups when you’re ready for extra protein.) Most people probably knew this stuff beforehand but I learned all this the hard way. In the hospital a few things and I really appreciated bringing were my extension cord, my heated blanket, robe and a change of pajamas. I actually brought full blown make up bag with eyeshadow palettes and everything which I didn’t even touch. The only cosmetic or toiletries I used was my toothbrush and toothpaste! Comparatively I feel like I’ve had a more difficult first seven days than others but I have had zero regrets and no regrets phase. I went in after doing a lot of self education and knew it would be challenging. I’m excited for the prospect of looking and feeling better and things are improving daily! I think you will find the same is true for you. -
I am on day 4 of puree. The first 3 days i seriously felt like i was over stuffing myself. Today i cut it back to 2 2ounce meals and broke them both into 2.. so 4 times.. but i did it during the day only and am finished.. Only i also added genepro (30g) of protein to the food.. half scoop in each.. I also had my protein shake at some point. I may move the shake to lunch, have a scrambled egg for breakfast and leave the second course of protein for dinner. I had to try something different because eating 2 ounces at once.. was way too much and i was getting the pressure in the chest.

I am a fan of genepro! Even if it only gave u 15 grams of protein still a awesome source of protein to add to anything! -
I went and picked up GENEPRO from my local GNC. Added it to my Water content and it doesn't taste that bad. Of course I can still taste it, but not as bad as those shakes. Hopefully I can go with this for a while. Anyone got any advice on feeling nauseous all the time? It's like whenever I smell something or move around, I get that feeling. The only thing that works is just sitting down. I tried calling my Dr but I guess the office is closed today because no answer. I can't understand why all of a sudden I'm feeling like this. I've never felt so nauseated in my life!!!

No Flavor Protein Powder
orionova replied to MommyRedmond's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I've researched, I would not recommend Genepro. The actual protein content in one serving is 10 grams, not 30. It claims that you absorb it three times better, so that it's as if you are getting 30 grams. I find that difficult to believe, especially since it says it is absorbed mostly in the upper part of the intestines. The part that gets cut out in RNY. The reason it is so tasteless and disolves so easily is because there is so little actual protein in it. If you do use it, use it in everything so you have a chance of getting your protein in. -
They don't have it in the store, at least not where I live. There is a lot of controversy about Genepro, my surgeon does not recommend it, but I was having the same issues as the original poster so I got some to try. Eh. I put it in a mixture of Water with a little grape juice (I am allowed unsweetened juices) People say they can't taste it but I sure could. Plus it make the color weird and the whole thing thick. But hey, it may work for you.

sleeve buddy in San Antonio ?
Erato Calliope replied to Shilatte's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@rln, I was able to start driving once I was off the pain meds. Pre-op j was using GNC's Total Lean 25 powder shakes. I found the powder more filling and creamier than the pre-made Total Lean 25 shakes. Post-op, I do the pre-made since they are a bit thinner and go down easier. I do the powder Total Lean every so often but I use Water instead of milk. Also, I was using Unjury's unflavored Protein powder to get an added protein boost to my Soups and other foods. However, I've switched to Musclegen GENEPRO unflavored Protein Powder. I can only find it on Amazon or on Genepro's website, though. It's about $10-$15 more than Injury, but you get much more out of it because you only need 1 tablespoon to get 30g of protein. unjury is 21g for a larger scoop that is = to about 2-2.5 tablespoons. Additionally, the Genepro dissolves much better in food and drinks. In regards to diet, technically, I'm supposed to be on soft foods till 6/22, but I'm actually eating whatever. For the most part they are soft but this weekend at a birthday party I had about 4 chips but I just chewed them very, very well. Most foods are soft as long as you chew well, ya know? I try to limit my carbs because my nutritionist promotes the low carb diet, but I don't freak out. In my opinion I'm eating so little that a teaspoon of rice or 4 chips once or twice a week isn't the end of the world especially if everything else that enters my mouth had a high nutritional value. I do need to start upping my veggies because a high protein diet is killer on your lower digestive system. Fiber gumnie and stool softeners are a must. Lastly, I'm also taking 1 Probiotics pill daily. It has 4 billion active cultures or whatever the term is that they use. Supposedly, and you may be able to find more about this searching the boards, there was a scientific study that was done on bypass patients testing the affect of probiotics on weightloss and the group that had the probiotics lost a much higher percentage of weight. I know that was for bypass patients, but probiotics can help everyone even if they don't help me lose weight, IMHO they help digestion in general.I'll look for the link to the article and I'll post it. -
I use a product that I found and really like Musclegen Research GENEPRO Protein Powder it is 30 gram of protein and I put it my coffee every morning. no taste. dissolve better in hot liquid. use a fork to stir.

@@brighteyes64, congrats on getting sleeved! I've heard lots of people mention genepro protein powder, it's supposed to be flavorless & full of protein. Maybe you can use it in broths or add it to crystal lite. Check w/your doctor first to see if it's recommended. I didn't hear about it until after I was in phase IV (regular food). So I personally never tried it. Good luck. It gets easier. -
Hey All! I know that topic has come up a lot and I’ve tried searching but I was wondering what unflavored high protein powder you guys are using that has low calories. I’m just a week out of my sleeve surgery and I want to make sure I’m getting lots of my protein. I’m not liking the pre-made drinks or some HMR stuff that I have, so I’m hoping you guys know. I heard Genepro has high protein but had some lawsuits and might not be that actual high so looking for other options, maybe Isopure? Thanks!
