  1. my stomach sounds like an airport sometimes i swear - it does get a little less noisy the further away from surgery. i ate two weeks full liquids- no real food until week 4 - eggs made me puke and hurt even. stay with mashed potatoes, yogurt those items for a bit and yes you feel full after a bite or two - or at least i did . wait a good 30 minutes to drink before a meal and after wait 30 minutes before you drink.... that pocket is tiny

What are your go to meals?

I'll be 3 months out on the 19th of this month. For Breakfast: I usually eat ONE egg sometimes with or without 1 piece of turkey sausage. Sometimes scrambled with some sort of cheese, or diced ham, or veggies. And sometimes I'll just do a sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat English Muffin but can never finish the entire thing (usually have at least 1/4 left). For Lunch: 1/4 cup of Tuna (just tuna, light mayo, salt and pepper) with 6 whole grain saltines and 6 mini cubes of cheese. Most times I cannot finish all of this either. Sometimes I'll just do a few slice of lunchmeat (98% fat free) and a few slices of cheese. Sometimes a yogurt or cottage cheese. Just depends. For Dinner: Almost always either chicken, shrimp, some sort of fish (all cooked various ways but fried) and veggies (spinach, green beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, etc). Which, by the time I get down my meat serving, I rarely have room for veggies but I always add them to my plate and TRY to get some in. Just recently I made up some taco meat (with ground turkey) and we made mini tacos with those 1 carb tortillas (15 calories) from Mr. Tortilla. They were awesome!!! We added a spoonful of meat, diced tomatoes, sour cream, shredded lettuce, taco sauce and taco cheese. Just a pinch of each item on each taco. I could eat two. And I was pushing it by the end of the second one. The tortillas are like 3 or 4 inches wide but so dang good! I HIGHLY recommend them! We tried their Spicy Prototype for now but also have the Multigrain and the Pico de Gallo. Can't wait to try them! Tons of things you can use them for. I usually do not snack during the day at all. Just don't feel the need to. But after dinner I do try and get in at least two servings of a fruit (before bed) as per my dietician. So, I'll usually do an apple and a small Halo (not at the same time) or cottage cheese with a few pieces of cantaloupe tossed in, or few pieces of watermelon, cherries, etc. So far that has been the norm and usual for me. Now I have eaten things like a slice of pizza once or twice or a few bites of a cheesesteak and a few bites of an Italian Hoagie (all were during a long weekend vacation/trip), a few fries, but that does not happen often. It is NOT typical behavior.

    Fish for pureed/mushy stages?

I don't like mayo, but I do like miracle whip, so you could try that. I make a sauce of mayo mixed with mustard and curry powder (it doesn't taste like mayo AT ALL). You could try bolthouse yogurt ranch (or any other bolthouse flavor - they are about 45 calories for 2 tablespoons). They are in the produce section refrigerators. You could try a bottled curry or tikka masala sauce or Asian marinade (I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm thinking I'll be too tired after surgery to cook much so I'm thinking of easy things). Also, broth might be good.

    Fish for pureed/mushy stages?

You can use plain greek yogurt instead of mayo. I also hate mayo.
  5. https://bariatricbits.com/recipes/ Here is a website that has some recipes. I think I saw another one that had some interesting looking recipes, and I will post it if I find it. I start soft foods on Wednesday (cannot wait!). I bought canned tuna, canned chicken breast, chicken thighs, white fish, turkey chili, soups with meat & vegetables. I also picked up low fat mayo, hummus & guacamole (pre made snack size tubs) to mix with chicken & tuna. Some other things I purchased to prepare are sugar free bbq sauce, sugar free ketchup, s.f. canned fruit, beans, ground turkey. I plan on continuing to eat Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt & farina for breakfast. Good luck & tell us if you find recipes or foods that you like!
  6. My surgery was in 2017. I have settled into a few core go-to nutritional solutions. I always have Premier Protein shakes on hand in chocolate (30g Protein, 1g sugar) or Apple + Oat (20g Protein, 1g sugar). Reasonable pricing by the case at Costco. Having a dependable, easy to count and carry protein source allows me to relax on what else I'm eating during the day. You're not back to veg and fruit yet (especially salads!), but that'll come. In the soft food category, two favorites for me are Siggi's yogurt (12g Protein, 5g sugar), or cottage cheese with (home made) no-sugar applesauce or (home made) low-sugar jam. I've moved away from the yogurt and more toward the cottage cheese, since I can take more control of the flavorings and because cottage cheese is more protein-dense than yogurt. The biggest challenge for me in the liquid and soft food stages was getting something savory into the mix. Bone broth and organic chicken stock worked well for me, sometimes with an egg mixed in. Other soft foods I rotate are egg salad and a mix of tuna and chicken. I use two cans of tuna with one can of chicken (both packed in water, both purchased at a reasonable price at Costco). I add a bunch of horseradish mustard and some mayo. You can reduce the amount of mayo by adding back some of the water that the cans are packed with. Also, an immersion blender makes the tuna/chicken salad more like a restaurant and less like a parent with a fork. Good luck on the path, MGigi and everyone else!
  7. I remember things like eating tuna, egg salad (although warning - a lot of people can't tolerate eggs early out) - can't remember what else, but I also continued to eat some of stuff I ate during pureed stage, iike hummus, refried beans, and Greek yogurt. Ricotta bake is good, too - there should be a lot of recipes out there for it. check out the blog "World According to Eggface". She has recipes on there for all the stages

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hey @Flounder. Sometimes it really can be rough to get the protein we need in. But to meet my goals I do food prep just like @Blueslily stated. It really helps when are working. In the mornings before i start work. I always just drink a protein drink unless im able to make me an omelet w/ spinach and crab meat. For snacks while at work I get things like almonds, onikes greek yogurt, tuna salad w/ 2 broil eggs, egg salad, grill shrimp salad, chicken salad, quest protein bar, canteloup, spinach, white and yellow cheese sticks. These are just somethings i get my protein in with while i work. So i hope it helps. But keep pushing and you are doing good💪.

    Liquid diet

The closest to chewing on the full liquid diet are probably the sugar-free ice pops, jello & pudding. I am also allowed farina that is thinned out with milk and sugar-free yogurt. Have those foods helped at all, if you are allowed them? The chewy calcium citrate supplements might give you enough of the sensation to help. I know, I totally understand and just counting down the days until I can move to the soft food stage!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I had my surgery a few days before you (currently on full liquid phase), and I agree it is hard to get them both in, especially that first week. I have been getting better at getting them in this second week, so it gets easier (at least until we have to start spacing out the water before and after meals). I try to drink my protein shakes between meals. So the first around 10 am and the second around 3pm or 8 pm. There were a few days were I couldn't stomach them, so on those days when that happened, I used Genepro and added 1/2 a serving to my soups or crystal light. Also sometimes th chocolate shakes can be overwhelming, so I mix 1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate. If I get 2 shakes or 2 servings of Genepro in that is 60 g of protein. I have been also eating Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container w/ 7 g of protein). For me, water has been the bigger challenge every day. Like you said, there aren't enough hours in the day to get it all in! Drinking Crystal Light or other sugar free drinks instead of water for a drink or two a day also helps me. I have a time marked motivation cup filled with water and need to have it near me at all times. I am always behind on where I should be each hour. 🤦‍♀️Luckily, the 2 shakes take care of 16 oz of water, otherwise I wouldn't have made the 64 oz goal yet. I did set a timer on my phone through baritastic, but it doesn't seem to work on my phone. I think there are water drinking reminder apps, so I will need to try that next week when I start soft foods. I'm sorry you are getting cramping, when I drink too quickly, I feel it sometimes, too, but it has gotten better. Wishing you luck, and looking forward to seeing other tips for the water, too! Keep us posted if you find tips that work for you!😊

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Hi! I had my surgery late July (27th) so I'm 10 days post op. This is how things went for me: Day of surgery The surgery took 1.5 hours, and I spent an additional 1 hour in the recovery room. I was only nauseous immediately after waking up but it went away quickly. When I got back to my room, I slept for a while. After about an hour I was able to get up and walk around, use the bathroom, and drink water. This made me a bit dizzy and nauseous and I felt weak. I tried to walk around every hour or so but all I really wanted to do was sleep. Most of the pain was in my back and chest. Pain level was 7/10 so they gave me more painkillers for the night. I slept on and off throughout the night, waking several times to use the bathroom, have a walk around my room and a few sips of water. These were definitely the hardest hours of the entire recovery. It took quite a bit of concentration and strength to get myself out of bed each time. I never experienced any nausea or vomiting, just some dizziness when walking or standing up for more than 5 minutes. 1 day post op The next morning I felt much better, pain level 5/10. Was able to drink a lot more, walk around the entire ward, have a shower and take 2 pills orally (1 for stomach, 1 for pain). Most of the pain was more of an aching in my back and upper chest, and an extremely sore abdomen. My husband said the color in my skin was back to normal and I was generally in good spirits. I was discharged at 11am and when we got home (to our hotel) is when the shoulder pain and gas pain started to kick in. I noticed that it helped a lot to drink hot peppermint tea and broth, as well as to lie down flat on the bed. Once I would get up and walk around some more, though, the shoulder pain would come back. I walked around as much as I could because I had read that, although painful, it's the quickest way to get the gasses out and recover. That afternoon I also had my first meal: about 2 tbsp of babyfood puree. Went down fine. It was also the first time that evening that I noticed my belly rumbling a lot and making noise. Slept through the night without waking up just fine. 2 days post op Pain level was just a 2 or 3 this morning with some gas and shoulder aching. I spent the day taking small walks, napping and alternating ice water with hot broth and tea, and had about 100g of babyfood puree throughout the day. 3 days post op No real pain on this day, just soreness in the abdomen and some dull ache in the shoulder every once in a while. I had some Greek Yoghurt in addition to the babyfood and that went down well. Could feel a lot of rumbling happening in my belly. Also had my first BM! 4-5 days post op This is when I finally started to feel some hunger. But after having just 2 or 3 teaspoons of yogurt or puree, my stomach felt very full and this would last for 3-4 hours during which I could focus on getting my water in. I comfortably traveled home (1.5 hr flight + 1 hr train) on day 5. Present (10 days post op) No pain or discomfort, just some soreness around my incisions that I notice a few times a day. Energy levels are fine unless I try to do something physically demanding - then I get wiped out very quickly and need a nap or a rest. I am continuing to take omeprazole every morning and have 1 more day of blood thinner injections left. Eating around 50g of puree food, 5-6x a day. Highest weight: 241 lbs Surgery date weight: 228 lbs Today's weight: 216 lbs

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hello everyone! My surgery date was April 27, I am down 70lbs from my liquid diet and 60 from the day I went into surgery. Size 20-size 14(I would be a size 12 but I have big hips and a big bottom still) for workouts I’m hiking, walking, starting to run, swimming, yoga(hot yoga is my favorite) and HIIT. In the mornings I eat my protein yogurt then I’ll snack around 11, then I’ll eat my lunch which is a piece of cheese and feta and olive salad, then I do a protein shake for dinner I do chicken or salmon. I can’t do beef and I’m real careful about pork. I’m drinking tons of water! I’m so happy I can have salads and fruits now. Hope everyone is doing well.

    15 months post sleeve

I’m freaking out a little. Over a year post sleeve and For breakfast I eat 150g quark (low fat Greek yogurt kind of) with 70g strawberries and 30g protein granola. I’ve watched way too many videos on YouTube that state after one year your plate should only be a total of 170grams. It’s a full children’s bowl. Is that normal? 😞 dinner I eat really healthy but it weight up to 250-300grams total of protein and veggies. I have not gained any weight but it’s scary to see that I’m able to eat almost a full small plate of food
  14. I have been using Vital Proteins brand unflavored powders. I have been primarily using their Collagen complex powder, but coworkers use their protein powder and love it too. Their unflavored stuff really is unflavored. I usually put it in a hot drink, or yogurt, because that's how I start my day.

    July Surgeries??

I got the great value brand powdered peanut butter from Walmart and I’ve been adding that to my yogurt and shakes because I miss peanut butter so much! It’s actually pretty good and it has protein in it so bonus.
  16. It doesn’t seem like anywhere near enough but what do your dietician & surgeon say? Are you recording your food? What does your plan require & recommend? I was eating three meals a day from purées - small portions about 1/4 -1/3 cup. Each meal contained protein. The portion size slowly increased to less than a cup as I progressed adding more protein & vegetables & I added an afternoon & evening snack usually fruit & yogurt. I was focussed on developing good eating routines & incorporating a balanced diet & what would be sustainable in the long term to maintain my weight. I wasn’t really hungry or all that interested in food but I knew I had to eat. By about 5 or 6 months I was eating less than 900 calories I think. I stopped multi vitamins at 8 months with my surgeon’s approval as my blood work is as very good so I was getting all the nutrients I needed from what I was eating. I maintain at about 1200 calories (not tall, smallish frame, not very active & in my mid 50s), blood work is still good. Some people can eat more than others & some people’s plans require to eat more or less than others. I do believe you can only eat what you can eat at each meal but I’m concerned you are really only eating one meal & a snack a day. You’d be better off eating smaller portions more frequently through the day. Add a protein shake or yoghurt for more protein - you can’t be any where near meeting your daily protein goals - you can sip the shake & graze on the yoghurt for ages at work if you need. Are you eating slowly? I take 30 - 60 minutes to eat even now. If you don’t have a dietician, I’d ask your team for a recommendation & if you don’t track your food, I’d also start doing that too.
  17. Hello guys, This is my first post here. I stumbled upon this page on Google and was reading some of the topics and this community seemed very supportive. I thought I'd give it a try. So I'm one week out of post op gastric bypass. I was in the hospital for about 3 days and I've been home since. I have to say the first couple days I was in horrible pain, way worse than I anticipated. While in the hospital I drank very small amounts and barely ate anything. They gave us little 30ml cups to pour liquids into. We had the option of water, apple/cranberry juice diluted 50/50 with water, skim milk and ice chips. They also gave us a jello every day at lunch and a no sugar vanilla pudding at dinner. Accompanied by some sort of cream based soup with no chunks in it. I was a little surprised because I was expecting clear liquids only. Anyways long story short.. After coming home I've felt much much better. I think I stopped pain meds day 4 and I'm able to move around, bend, etc without any discomfort really. I'm obviously taking it easy but I am finding the now 3 weeks (2 weeks pre-op) liquid diet to be hell on Earth. I'm doing my best and while yesterday and today I tried a little bit of pureed foods and yogurt and it seemed to sit fine. I am trying to follow the guidelines. I personally have no felt any nausea or had any diarrhea since the first day or two. So I'm just sitting here trying to argue with myself about whether to try and suffer another week of primarily liquid diet or to try and step into pureed a little early. I don't want to cause any issues or stretch my stomach accidently. Even with puree I've been careful to have things like Liptons cup-a-soup. I pureed a clam chowder and ate maybe 1/3 of the can and found it sat very heavy the rest of the day on my stomach. I felt bloated and whenever o drank liquids it just refreshed the bloated feeling. Not trying that again. They also expect me to drink 2 protein shakes daily. The best I can do to makr a protein shake that isn't chalky is 300ml of water in the blender. But even then I struggle sipping at it for an hour or more to drink more than half. I actually feel very gassy afterwards and sometimes it too feel very heavy on my stomach. Maybe I am drinking too fast or is this normal at this stage? Obviously I want nothing more than to be back on solid foods. But I know that is at least 3 weeks away and then it will be a very gradual introduction. Sorry for this post being soo long I am just really struggling and not sure what to do. I feel like if I see one more cup of clear chicken broth I'm going to croak. I just miss and want flavour and taste back in my life. Something to get me through to where I can enjoy real food again.
  18. Hi there, I am just over 3 weeks post-op and can only eat about half a 5.3oz yogurt so I save it so I can have it later, usually before bed. Eggs I toss as they dry out when reheated.
  19. Greek yogurt also makes a good dip if you add in ranch dressing mix.
  20. I dislike the taste of plain nonfat Greek yogurt, but when I add a liberal amount of Lawry's chili-lime seasoning to it, it makes a tasty enough dip for celery sticks.

    Very discouraged after sleeve

A lot of it is willpower, unfortunately. I find it easier to stay on track after surgery because I am always seeing results. Maybe there's a bit of instant gratification to it, and I know I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I'm still losing a fairly decent pace three months out and that's incredibly motivating. I find the more I stick to the guidelines (protein first, eat slow, chew thoroughly, avoid sugar or fat laden foods) the easier it is to stick to the healthy foods. Surgery gave me time to start getting over my sugar addiction because I quite literally couldn't eat sugar, and now it's so much easier to say no because I can't have refined sugar. I'll eat some fruit if I have a craving and be satisfied. Surgery also took away my hunger for the first couple months, which gave me time to get my head on straight. I know that's not the same for everyone though. What meats can you eat? I'm not familiar with what is or isn't allowed within a Jewish kosher diet. I've found as long as I stick to lean meats, I can eat just about anything. I tried chicken skin once and BIG MISTAKE, but just a thigh or breast, some leaner cuts of steak, lamb, turkey (seriously, turkey chili is my lifeline even in the summer), bison...all these I can tolerate fine. I live in Midwest USA so there's not a ton of fresh seafood options, it's not something we make often. There's also protein powder and shakes that you can use to supplement. I usually have a protein shake every day because I just physically can't eat enough food to hit 60 grams of protein. I use cheese as a snack sometimes to supplement my protein intake. I'm also very fond of Greek yogurt and cottage cheese, but you might be tired of them. What about eggs? Or even a glass of milk - hydration and protein!
  22. I take things in regular size containers. Talk more, move my utensils around stirring food or moving food around in the container more and so far it is going okay. I am still in the Full liquid stage so I do a lot soups and yogurts. So far no one has noticed, that I am aware of. I do tell people I am doing more mindful eating so pausing between bites, etc... Mindful eating is a buzzword so it seems to placate them.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Don’t get worried. I had mine in 6 July and doing fine. I thought after my first Greek yogurt I did not get it but the weight still comes off. I too a week after mine could handle 4 oz but think about that ?? 4 oz ?? I could drink 6 sprints in an hour and half before surgery and eat hamburgers ! you’ll do great !
  24. You might also keep using protein shakes to get your protein requirements, and high protein yogurts. If you don't keep up the protein levels, you will lose muscle, and more hair. Also our bodies use starches first before it burns our body fat, but it is not the same process as when you eat dense protein, your body uses the stored fat for fuel, you become fat adapted instead of running on glucose. And that is what corrects insulin resistance, we correct our metabolisms and hormones.
  25. Hi everyone! I would really appreciate some help. I am 6 weeks past my sleeve surgery. I'm am very discouraged and disappointed. I lost about 20 lbs in the beginning, only because of the pre op diet where I barely ate anything and the 2 weeks after the surgery but it has been downhill from there. I know the sleeve is "not a magic solution, its a tool" and so on! I've heard it all too many times. But I would assume that if I eat like ten percent of what I used to eat I would lose weight, but I haven't. I do eat starches and foods that I may not supposed to, but much less than before. I am really struggling with dieting. If I didn't struggle with dieting, I wouldn't get to the point that I need surgery! I find it hard to believe that all people who are over weight to the point that they need surgery, all of a sudden magically changed their mindset after surgery and started to be able to eat the right foods. I don't know how to do it. I may not eat the "right" foods, but I don't eat terrible foods. I don't eat more than I can tolerate, I don't eat ice cream or milkshakes or things like that. I do eat my sweet cereal, my avocado, my rice, grits etc. I find it nearly impossible to eat all this protein. I hate all fishes. I'm Jewish and Kosher so cant eat seafood. I don't like chicken salad. Very limited in the proteins that I can eat. How much cottage cheese and yogurt can a person eat a day? I am so frustrated and don't know what to do, I am very curious to know if all these people who lose so much weight after surgery is because they actually followed the guidelines, and if so, how all of a sudden they were able to change after all these years of not succeeding to eat the right foods. What discourages me the most, is that it seems that it is all about will power, with or without surgery. If dieting and controlling what eat is the only way to lose weight with or without it, what is the surgery good for? I am so discouraged. Please help! Thanks so much for your time!
