Anyone use Dr. Fitzer at Virginia Bariatric?
Rukhsx3 replied to obxshell89's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hey everyone! I know it’s a very old thread but seems like some of y’all are still active on here. I’m a 23 year old I had the bypass with Dr. Fitzer he and his team are AMAZING!! My surgery weight was 248lb, I am now 220lb I am 5 weeks post op. I had no complications and am doing pretty well! My only concern I’m having right now is a stall. I’ve been 220 for two weeks & half week now 🥺🥺 anyone of y’all went through a stall? If so how to break it. -
Thats amazing! Knowing what I know now I'm shocked as to how many people including myself had complications with the band.

I've had acid reflux since 2010. Has a gastric sleeve in 2014 which helped with weight loss, but increased the acid reflux. I've run out of possible medical management and the reflux was destroying my quality of life. After having a bunch of diagnostic tests to confirm my acid reflux, my insurance approved gastric bypass surgery (gastrojejunostomy). I had surgery 10/29/20 and haven't had an episode of reflux since. Realize, this was major life changing surgery to cure my acid reflux, but at 63, I didn't see any improvement in my life without surgery. I'm now 4 weeks post op, healing and most of the post op issues are resolving. A "complication" of this surgery is weight loss, and I've lost 18 lbs. since surgery...….SWEET! I'm not saying that surgery is the best option for everyone with chronic GERD, but it was definitely the right choice for me.

I am having a lap gastric sleeve! As long as you have no complications you can go home same day.

This happened to me too, except I was all ready to go to Mexico. Had researched surgery centers, surgeons, hotels, even knew which flight I would be booking. Then, my insurance changed and I'm covered now. Relieved that I am part of a comprehensive program now near where I live in case of complications and also for ongoing support. Yes, there are different schedules for intermittent fasting, but the general idea for most is to stop eating for a certain period of time every day. I did 16/8, which meant that I fasted for 16 hours per day. The most common way to do this is to stop eating after dinner, then skip breakfast the next day and not eat until lunch (e.g., stop eating at 8 pm and don’t eat again until noon the next day). Some people do 12/12 (which is not much of a challenge if you want to start easy), some do 18/6, and some do one meal a day (OMAD), which means they only eat once per day and fast the rest of the day. There are other, more complicated schedules, like alternate day fasting, but I didn’t do those. I personally think the ones with the same schedule each day are the most beneficial for changing your eating habits.

Backstory- bypass was almost 2 years ago. No complications and took reflux meds for 1-2 months post op as procedure. I had plastic surgery in Feb and had some reflux a few days later (I thought this wasn't possible with bypass but assumed maybe from local swelling and irritation form being intubated). The surgeon had me back on the meds for 1-2 months. It seemed to have gone away until October. It's not bad just that I feel/hear a sensation like bubbles pop almost like drinking carbonated soda (which I haven't touched in over 2 years). So the surgeon has me start them back 2 weeks ago. Here's the scary part. Yesterday morning I drank my protein drink as always and after about 30 min. I had a ache dull pain in-between my should blades. I have already had my gallbladder removed years ago before bypass surgery. The ache goes away and I eat normal foods, no issues except once in awhile during the day I get a very dull ache between my should blades. Then last night I was eating some crackers and got the pain worse but not unbearable but really uncomfortable. I woke up hours later at 3am with the back pain. I had a normal BM and later spit up the foamies/salvia and a threw up little bit of the crackers. Side note-- TMI I have been a little more constipated occasionally so I did have a BM before bed and in the middle of the night. Not diarrhea so I am assuming there's no blockage. I was able to fall back asleep and feel ok this morning just tired from being up for 2 hours. I have had the throwing up foamies maybe 5 times since surgery. I am hoping this is just a random thing. I have been drinking my protein shake slowly without issue this morning. I called the surgeon and they said to stay on liquids for 24-48hours to give my system a rest. Of course I google the symptoms and am now trying not to freak out. If I had a blockage I would assume I would be throwing up my shake now and not have had a BM last night. I am def. not bloated. The office said to go to the ER if it gets worse. Why does this have to happen right before a holiday when no offices are open?? I am trying not to worry that this is just one of those random things that happens to us. I don't have any fever, elevated heart rate etc.

Like everyone else, death would be at the top of my list. Next, failure. Not losing, OR losing and regaining. I don’t have tons of support, so I feel like there would be “I told you so” from some people. Addiction transfer. Long term complications that ruin my quality of life. I’m a worrier, and I worry my worries will keep me from ever realizing my dreams. -
Dear friends, I had GS one year ago, absolutely no complications and no side conditions, this year has been amazing, I look and I feel great. 3 weeks ago I started feeling very bloated, with headaches and general weakness... I did a covid test then my blood test as well as salmonella, e coli and parasites, everything came clean. I take probiotics and digestive enzymes, yet my stomach issues are still persisting. I get stomach ache after I eat, I get bloated, and my tummy started making some weird loud noises. I have to mention that fact that one month ago I did, out of curiosity (never had any issues with any foods), the food intolerances tests and I came out quite intolerant to wheat, lactose, eggs and chocolate. I eliminated all of them for 2 days now, but I still don't feel well. Have you had anything similar? Due to covid I am working from home in a very small town with limited access to specialized doctors, I am just wondering if I should go and see a doctor in a proper health center... Thank you and stay safe and in good spirits!

Hi everyone! I was sleeved on the 18th. My recovery has been pretty straight forward, although on the first few days after surgery I was taking quite a lot of painkillers etc. Yesterday I was feeling quite good and decided to try some scrambled egg (approved by my doctor and dietician) and it did not sit well at all..well actually it didnt sit. It came up. Today I have been back to having some painful swallows as well as such a gurgling tummy and the discomfort kind of radiates to my back. I am unsure if its muscle pain or gas pain at this point. I've spoken to the specialist today and he assured me nothing would have got damaged but just wondering if any of you have had some good days then regressed or if it's mostly just improved? I even started having some hiccups after eating today which made me a bit worried. It's all so unknown and I'm a worrier at the best of times so knowing there can be come complications and going a step backwards in terms of recovery today has me a little on edge 😅

Food Before and After Photos

I’m a week out from an emergency internal hernia repair (who knew that was a complication of LGBP because I didn’t!). Anywho eating has been ROUGH the last week. Most days I only average 400-500 calories and that’s with a protein shake. Found a healthy choice steamer bowl in the freezer my sister left (woohoo!) Normally 190 calories, 28g of protein, 5g of fat, and 8g of carbohydrates for the whole thing. Ate about half? My kid snatched the rest while asking if I was full after a half hour. Yes, kid, go ahead I’m totally done with it. -
Post surgery liquid diet help??
ichabodny replied to DJ80s's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Second this and how! Sugar-free popsicles were life-savers for me. Just do what you can and try to stay hydrated. I used genepro as well- I was really sick as a dog for the first couple weeks for complications but especially the first 10 days. Try to drink as much as you can and try broth. Some people have it easier with warmer and some with cold. I know it can be stressful at this stage so just do the best you can. Move around and keep track of when you are drinking- force about an ounce at a time of anything you can handle. -
Gradycat had it spot on; everyone really has a different weight loss and at different times. My first two weeks I was still gaining weight after having gained over 10 lbs from the surgery because of complications and some serious swelling. My first Dr appt, the scale didn't show so much but honestly, I was just so happy by the fourth week to have lost the amazing pregnant stomach and lbs gained that it was a win. I'm 50 and have lost a significant amount since the surgery but it also combined a pre-surgery weight loss of 36 lbs on the program. I didn't exercise for 6 or 7 weeks because of my complications and incisions still re-opening but I did notice I lose weight differently then I ever did before. When I went to see my Dr, they don't go so much by the lbs lost as much as the fat lost and the actual bmi. I'm finding I wear at least a size smaller then I did for my weight previously on diets and my shape is much different then ever before; it could be the age but the Dr did say that the loss will be different in general. I'm 11 weeks now and have lost a total of 86 lbs; almost 50 since the surgery. However, the one thing I've noticed is that my daughter and I are now sharing clothes and she's just under 170 while I'm 40 lbs heavier. I'm actually wearing about a size 16/18 and an 18 in jeans even though I'm still a few lbs off from onederland. My surgeon said that also is normal. We had a sort of 'argument' about my goal weight as they said my bone loss would be significant due to my age and that my size would not be the same. They capped it at 160 at the minimum goal weight while I wanted lower but now I see they were right. Things that never shrunk before; particularly at 200 lbs, are shrinking and I am much healthier. In the end that's what the goal has to be. You are still very close to your surgery; you have to give it time. Two lbs a week is ideal and a good weight loss rate. I am now at around 1 lb a week and really ok with that. Some weeks are even less and I'm ok with that too. When you start feeling better, you will notice a big change in your health and quality of life. Just focus on that and knowing you're going down at the rate your body needs. Sometimes, it's better to be pretty steady and slower for skin control, etc. Exercise will catch up in around 3 weeks to a month for the loss and firmness showing but make sure you stay with your Dr and moderate that so you can continue to lose. I made the mistake previously of exercising too much and lost quick at first then nothing. My trainer said it needs to be gradual for the metabolism to continue to respond. Congrats on your weight loss that you're having-you are really doing great. Hope what I wrote in detail can help out for now.

Week 3 soft foods and weight gain
Annjones07 replied to Avii's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. My surgery date was on October 28, 2020, and I'm still in the puree stage. I've been afraid to go to the soft food stage due to all the complications I've read about it. The first week in December, I plan to start the soft food stage with seafood. So far, I'm thirty pounds down, however, I'm not drinking enough water on a daily basis. ichabodny replied to mocha2871@yahoo.com's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm so glad things are looking better for you. It will be much better soon honestly. I had complications after the surgery with some effects like you are having. There was a lot more pain for me and I couldn't have any kind of pain meds for the complications with the anesthesia. They did give me my anti-nausea and tylenol with limits. I was in the hospital just shy a week with a lot of violent vomiting-forget the shakes and drinks! But they just said to take more and used it as an incentive for me to leave that blasted place :-). By God, I took that stuff down, threw up and took more down just to go home! I was fortunate to not have any problems with bowel movements because I wasn't allowed any pain meds; most of those happen with the meds you take. I still have a ton of my meds sitting in my cupboard (9 weeks post-op now). It was painful and even at home. I was told it would be fine going up and down the stairs constantly but when I got there and had to do it, it was difficult. I was lucky my husband went out to the furniture store while I was in the hospital, opened some credit and there were recliner sofas in the house for me delivered the day after surgery as a nice surprise and man were they life-savers! But for real, one day in the next week or two (everyone is different) you will wake up with energy and the pain will be like nothing for you. You'll start really losing and it will have been well worth it! Hugs during your recovery. I already feel skinny and great; even after the really hellacious first few weeks after the surgery. I even still throw up occasionally and still getting used to what I can try to eat (with some not so nice moments when it's wrong) but I feel just like a new person already. -
Yep, just keep on eating as healthy as you can. My surgery dates were wonky too; it was postponed and then postponed again and I was set to wait another two extra months but they called one day and said to start my 2 week liver shrink diet pronto-surgery in 13 days. I lost about 42 lbs total before the surgery on the program and I'm very glad I did. I'm close to 90 lbs down at 9 weeks post op because I lost some before hand and it really helps with motivation, feeling good and prepping for the your post-op diet. Get as much down as you can with the help of your NUT right now. You will lose fast after and you want your body a bit more adjusted for that. Ask also if you should be starting the bariatric vitamins, it can help pre-surgery if that's the way your Dr goes. I was told it would be hard for some people to take them after the surgery for size etc but was really unprepared for how difficult it was. My Dr and NUT both helped in getting the correct chews before-hand to prepare me for after. Exercise as much as you can! I missed that aspect. I had some minor complications and had to give up on my bike and core exercises until just these last two weeks and boy I did miss them even though the motivation was zero until recently. It really helps to get those habits in and get your body ready for the rapid weight loss after.

I am now close to 3 months post-op from the bypass. I had some complications just after; one being that two of my incisions were opened 2 days post op in the hospital. I also had a lot of bruising and swelling from passing out (apparently) the day after surgery and then vomiting violently due to some sort of reaction to the anesthesia. I had to stay in the hospital 6 days and even then fought to go home. Because of all this, my stomach was not only black/purple and I looked 6 months pregnant for about 2 weeks after the surgery, gained a lot of weight and had problems with gas pain for the delayed recovery. My husband and I had to add a silver kind of sulfur inside two of the incisions and stop the bleeding, put antiseptic inside of them and stuff gauze all the way inside each open incision. With all this, after about week 3, I was feeling like a new person. Like all of the sudden, I woke up and the swelling went down, the gas pain was gone and the incisions were starting to heal. It did take about 6 weeks for the sharp pains from the incisions to completely stop the sort of knife feeling and for them to really close up pretty good but I had some extreme scenarios with that. Keep moving! It's so hard just after surgery, no matter which one you get. But do everything your Dr says, even if you are really struggling and just keep moving to get the gas through. It does get better and you'll be past this part of the surgery. Hugs to all of you.

As some of you know by now by my post from a couple of weeks or so ago, I GOT A DATE! Lord willing and the Covid settles a bit, I will be joining the loser's bench on December 7th! Monday starts my preop diet-I can either do an all liquids diet or one with one small meal from a very short list of meat and vegetables. I opted to do whichever one my body needs each morning. I have done water fasting before with my longest without food being 3 days so I have some idea how craptastic this is probably going to be for the first few days. Thankfully while I love my family dearly everyone is okay with me sitting at home to hang out with my protein shake and cleaning supplies while my mom goes to my younger brother's house a few hours away. While I enjoy Thanksgiving food it won't be that much missed away from the smells and watching everyone else eat. My work schedule also is normal so Thursday is just a normal day off for me and then back at it Friday and Saturday so I also will count my blessings my day off isn't spent in a car for a good part of the day. Christmas will probably be different, Christmas is much more family and a lot less eating involved. 😊 So today was my stock up day for the next week or so(I didn't want to go all out buying 2 weeks worth in case tastes change, Covid postpones surgery or my tastebuds change) and of course it was basically everyone else's shopping day...completely didn't think about it being Thanksgiving week...oops. Anywho, ended up with some Fairlife, Premier protein shakes, sugar free jello, tasty bone broth(I can add a small amount of chicken or other meat and some veggies to it to make it more soup like), Mio Sport for electrolyes since I know I have a tendency to have leg cramps, fiber, immodium, bean-o--for any possible stomach irritability on the diet and beyond, and so many water flavor packets! I also have video games I can play, my novel to work on (anyone else doing NaNoWriMo this year?), books I've been meaning to read and cleaning to do to keep me out of the kitchen and focused on other things when I'm not at work. Wednesday is my preop visit with the nutritionist/surgeron and finalizing financial stuff and December 4th is my Covid test-if anyone has any insight to how terrible (or not really) that is, I'm all ears. I will be getting the nose swab(yay me. -_-) but my supervisor started my two weeks time off on the 4th and just had me work 4 days in a row which means I can get it done early and come home and go back to bed. Plan on going into nesting mode that weekend-although I'm kinda already working on it now. I've been saving up my vacation basically all year in anticipation of 2 whole weeks off. I want to make sure if I have any complications I won't screw up our schedule but also I work at a vet clinic as a receptionist and y'all...I am EXHAUSTED. I have a couple of friends that have already made plans to come see me while I'm on leave and I also plan on maybe going out to the beach for the day to walk and take pictures if I'm up to it(I know I see others being able to handle several miles of walking only a few days post op). But for the most part, I'm not making any plans but to rest, walk and sip anything else besides that is all extra bonuses! 🙂 I ordered some popsicle making molds from Amazon that I plan to use with my flavored water that should be here in a couple of days along with my pill dispenser (has 4 compartments per day-AM, Lunch, PM, evening) and I can take one large compartment with me to work instead of the whole thing! After so much time sometimes it is really hard for me to believe I actually have a surgery date...I went to my first ever bariatric surgery info session when I was 17...I am now 31...I always say that you can never help someone from addiction or just bad choices unless THEY ARE READY and I never listened to my own advice...until last year on my 30th birthday, I had had so many birthdays where I always promised myself in a year I wouldn't be fat, I could almost picture myself not obese but not quite. 30 was my wake up call that I couldn't do it on my own, I needed my help. In the mountains of Wyoming (I went back to visit with friends I had made while living there for a few years) I decided that I would find a PCP and start figuring it all out. I got insanely lucky, I had no PCP in mind when I called to make an appointment, just asked the receptionist who she would recommend and haven't looked back. She has been rooting for me for months and when I got to send her a message and let her know I had a date was a really big highlight for me. I stuck with this and here I am...16 days from surgery. I plan on vetting a therapist here in a few weeks, to find one that matches some specific criteria that also happens to be in network may be a bit of a challenge but I have challenges that weight loss will bring me I've never faced before...like dating...I've been obese since 4th or 5th grade so I've never been in a relationship or worried about unsavory characters giving me attention I do not want although I also plan on starting Krav Maga classes when my surgeron clears me. I think that's all I got for now, gonna enjoy my last 24 hours of "normal" eating tomorrow and Monday starts the real countdown! Amanda

Multiple surgeries in one
Alicia.vsg replied to JAN78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon refuses to do both and states it can cause issues with identifying postop complications and increases risks. I guess it makes sense, I was kinda annoyed bc I have had a couple gallbladder attacks. -

I am 19 days out, and doing better each day! Had a rough start. Down nearly 18 lbs post surgery, but about 37 since October. I am starting to eat more and more things, and it is tolerated well, but still can't eat very much. I am okay with that! My surgeon wanted me to start my multi at 7 days out instead of 14, since I had some complications. I started the B12 and calcium at 14. -
Insurance Through Postop
blackcatsandbaddecisions posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My weight loss surgery story actually started back in early 2019, but I chickened out before my first appointment because I was worried that I would have postop complications and the cost would go beyond the base rate. I gave up on the idea of weight loss surgery at that time, and decided that I would do it on my own. I think everybody here knows how well that went. At the end of the year I found out my husband‘s job would be ending, and we took that as an opportunity to try to find a job where he would have insurance that I could go on that would cover weight loss surgery. He got a job that covered it, and I joined his insurance plan, and within the month I was set up with my first appointment. my first appointment ended up being converted to telemedicine because of Covid, but that actually worked out great for me because my doctors office is two hours away. We had a six month waiting period, and for the first two months I will be honest I was working from home in quarantine, and I made absolutely no effort to lose weight and I did not make any progress. My third appointment was going to an in person appointment and the Bariatric class, and I was terrified that I would be up in weight and be disqualified. So for 2 weeks prior to that I went on a low carb low calorie diet. And I don’t know if it was me telling myself it was temporary or the realization that the surgery was coming helped, but I just kept extending and extending the date on my low carb diet. I ended up losing 48 lbs before the liquid diet which was greatly needed because I started at 339, and my surgery weight was 282. I’m 5’10 and my goal weight is 165. The liquid diet was no big deal, maybe because my diet was already very low calorie. I think I ended up losing about 8 pounds or so on it. It was a full liquid diet, and I did not vary from the diet at all. I want this to be the part of my life where I’m not constantly having a “little extra” or “just this bite” and I figured it would be a good test of willpower. surgery was a bit rough. I was in a fair amount of pain when I woke up, and I felt very nauseous. I could definitely feel my stomach, and it did not feel good. I wasn’t able to keep any water down, and the pain meds made me very sick. I ended up throwing up the small amount of water I’d drank snd the pain meds up all over myself the first night. But the next day was a tiny bit better, and it got better every day until day 4 I felt great. I ended up being able to drink water totally fine, no problem with protein or anything. I think my surgeon is a bit old school because I have a 4 week post op liquid diet too. No mush or purée stage here. I’m currently finishing up week 2 of the post op liquid diet, and like the preop diet I’m not going to cheat or go off plan. It was a long road to get here and I am going to do everything in my power to make this work. So far I am down about 10 lbs post surgery, so I don’t think I’m going to get the dramatic 30 lbs weight loss in the first month or anything but that’s fine. I’m down close to 70 lbs from my high weight, and it feels great. I’ll try to follow up every month or so with progress. HW:339 SW: 282 CW:271 GW: 165 -
I just had gastric sleeve to gastric bypass on October 29th. I had lost 60 pounds after sleeve surgery but slowly gained 40 back over the past 6 years. My bypass surgery was done for chronic GERD/Gastritis/Esophagitis, but I will lose weight as a "side effect/complication" of surgery. My surgeon told me I won't lose as much with this surgery, so I'm taking advantage of the recovery period to refocus on good, healthy food choices. I need to lose 25 pounds to get to a BMI of 24.9 - Normal Weight, which is where my gastroenterologist and Family Practitioner want me to be. Of course, I'd love to weight 145 pounds...haven't been that weight for over 35 years! Good luck on your journey and keep us updated on your progress!

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
Ann Parde replied to Ann Parde's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Oh wow, I'm sorry the sleeve gave you so many problems. I guess I was blessed that I never had any complications what so ever from my surgery. Other than after hitting my plateau, I starting feeling sorry for myself and slowly started grazing on things I shouldn't have. I need to retrain my 'tool' and mindset. I wish I never gave into those temptations because once I did the floodgates opened! Good luck with your revision! -
This has been addressed in a lot of threads. If you do a search, you will find more info than you ever wanted to know. After losing more than a hundred pounds at age 62, yes I had (and still have loose skin.) however, by 6 months post op and even more by a year post op, a lot of it sort of tightened up. My arms are not as floppy. Neither are my thighs, neck, for belly. My boobs never came back - still rocks in socks. I went from a 44DD to 34 A, and they hang down to my elbows. Many people really get obsessed with it and it is all they can see. I was in that camp, too, but other people didn't seem to notice as much as I did, and sooooo many people said I looked great and actually looked younger. I do not begrudge any one for getting plastic surgery after WLS, but I do recommend that you wait a year, for a couple of reasons. First, your skin will tighten up a bit on its own. Second, you are going to feel differently about it. Plastics was all I could think about for a while, and then my brain caught up with my body and I started feeling better about my NEW body and all it could do, sags and all. It doesn't matter at all to me now. A good bra and well fitted clothing do wonders. I will never wear a bikini and at my age, I am not trying to attract attention from anyone, and I have truly learned to be comfortable with what I have. You are going to have sags and loose skin. There is no getting around that. But it is not something to be terrified of! Be terrified of dying from the complications of morbid obesity! Having a new body that can do literally anything you want, with a few sags is way better than smooth skin and being obese. It's all a matter of perspective, but give yourself time to figure that out.

Congratulations! Glad you didn't have any complications or issues and that you're doing well.
