    Failed RNY and RNY Revision & Constant Hunger

    Have you tried any other appetite suppressants? If you go on Wegovy, it'll work but if you ever have to go off it (like if there's a nation wide back log again) you'll gain everything back and then some. My friend was on Ozempic and this happened to her. It might be better to look at an appetite suppressant and a metabolism booster and carb blocker (I use those) and do a reset on your stomach to get it used to eating smaller portions and better foods, and try drinking some brewed teas (I drink hibiscus tea, green tea, white tea, yerba mate tea, and black tea. Sometimes I switch some of those out for oolong tea and pu-erh tea.) They help with fat burning, suppressing appetite, some have a bit of caffeine in them for a natural energy boost. I would try that stuff before you go on a medication that will likely go back out of stock, and will cause major weight regain as soon as you have to stop taking it (my friend was working out, changed her diet, and taking Ozempic and within 10 days of being off the Ozempic, she had already regained 5 pounds. After a month, she gained back everything she lost, and after 2 months, she gained an extra 5 pounds).
  2. as long as you know how many calories it takes to maintain your weight - and track your food intake to be sure you're not going over that (except for an occasional "splurge" day, like on a holiday - in which case you just get right back on track the next day), you should be OK. Also, decide on what your top acceptable weight is, and once you get there, it's all hands on deck to get it back down again before it gets out of hand. as for the hunger, I'm guessing your body is probably happy where it is and doesn't want to lose weight. That's not to say you can't, but it'll be a struggle, because you'll be fighting biology. I'm dealing with the same thing right now. I want to lose 10 lbs - but the old body doesn't. You'll have to decide if it's worth the struggle. For some people it is, for others it's not. If you want to lose but the hunger is really bad, there are medications to control that (Wegovy might be one (??) - not sure - but they're out there). Some clinics are fine with prescribing those to you, others aren't - but it sounds like your is OK with it.
  3. at two years out, she should be getting double the number of calories she's getting now (if not more - depends on her height, weight, activity level, etc) - unless she's super short or has really screwed up metabolism or something. 662 calories is only common in the first few months after surgery, not at two years out. re: the 10 lb gain, most of us gain 10-20 lbs after hitting our lowest weight, so that's not uncommon. It's almost expected...(not inevitable, but it happens to most people) protein - most of us are encouraged to get 60-80 grams a day. I need 100, but that's because we discovered early on that I malabsorb it - my prealbumin level tanks if I don't get that much. But I'm not the norm. 300 is crazy. No one needs that much - not even body builders. That's so weird that the app is telling her that!! you mentioned an RD - might be a good idea for her to see one to get some good advice and guidelines on what/how she should be eating. She may have some issues that we don't necessarily know about (like me and my protein issue....)

I'm a 3 timer (I've had all 3 surgeries: lap band, sleeve, and bypass, currently underweight, struggling to keep weight up after losing colon in emergency surgery about 10mths ago but still remember what being overweight was like). My cousin had the VSG about 2 yrs ago at almost 400 lbs and has been semi successful and has lost close to 175lbs but over the past 9 mths or so has plateaued becuz of numerous "reasons" (moving across country marital woes, works stress, you name the stress, heredity,, etc.). She has reached out to me for help, as I admin a FB group for people with wls's + i was fairly successful (before I lost my colon, lol ) as she's desperate for help before it gets out of hand. She's gained 10 lbs in the past 10 mths since moving cross country and doesn't want to continue on. So, for the past month (and yes, even during the holidays), she's kept a strict journal which she always during her active losing phase. She sent me the last few days worth. I was dismayed to see her intake/output. Literally I think she's starving herself. She's taking in 662 calories a day and exercising 280 . This means she's getting in maybe 380 cals a day. And shes' a special needs teacher and a mom of a 6 yr old! OMG! She's drinking a lo cal protein shake for bfast and lunch and eating a super lo cal protein/veg dinner. She's getting in plenty of water and her vits, luckily. I think she's starving. But she said she's tried every variation of every single meal variation out there and she's frustrated she wants to cry. She's been on every "diet" her entire life and this sleeve was her saving grace and the only thing that worked - for a minute. Until the honeymoon was over. It's been about 2 yrs and now the hard work actually starts and I've told her this. Ok, I just got this info from her when I asked her how much protein she was getting: 109 gms a day. MFP shows only 35%. And she downloaded the ACTUAL MFP pie chart to prove to me this WAS the case and OMG! This is TRUE. Since when is MFP encouraging people to get almost 300 gms of protein a day? What protein u don't use, u pee out. Unless u r an unlucky few that r prone to kidney disease and then u get kidney dz! Seems ridiculous. Almost 300 gms!? And now they charge u? I told her she really doesn't need more than 70-80. I need some input on how to help her. Some ,meal/snacking solutions. I dont think she needs to know that she needs to increase her protein as she's already getting an overabundance in that department. Maybe something her dr can do for her? Tests or something? Metabolism tests? Is this done with blood or what? Or can it be done by a RD? HELP! Marci X POSTED

    Some people lose less, some lose more, but you lose more pounds per month the higher your BMI. I lost 23 pounds the first month, but I was also well over 300 pounds. I lost 16 pounds the second month and 17 pounds the third month and only 7 pounds the fourth month and 11 pounds the fifth. My point is... your weight loss isn't going to be steady. It'll be all over the place. And even if your numbers are smaller... every pounds adds up. I reached my goal weight in 18 months (admittedly I did have the gain back that happens during your second year leading up to your third, partially due to a med that made me gain weight, but I'm still satisfied with my weight loss which is maintaining at 186-191. I'm 189 today. But I'm also having my monthly so I'm sure it'll go down again after the fact lol. TMI, sorry.). Technically speaking I still lost over the amount that was projected for me. My lowest weight according to my surgeon's office was estimated to be around 189 pounds (where I'm today) but I got down to 175 at my lowest. It was estimated that I'd end up at 199 during the gain back period when I hit 3 years. I'm at 189 currently and my 3 year surgiversary is about 2 weeks away. So you can certainly lose more than you surgeon says, but it's very much about your own body, metabolism, and dedication. I mean, I honestly feel like I could have lost another 10-15 pounds if I'd been super strict with my diet, but I didn't feel like I could have maintained that and kept my sanity. During the weight loss phase I took that time to learn a new way to eat in a sustainable way. Being super restrictive just is not something that I can do for the rest of my life to keep off an extra 10-15 pounds. My dietician says that the way I chose to go about things is healthier and sustainable and my blood work looks great so I'm clearly getting enough nutrition with my diet and my weight has been steady and maintained for the last 6 months (for almost a year before that it maintained at 179-183, but the stupid med made me gain weight. It's been maintaining where it's at now though for 6 months, so that's good). Just, take your doctors numbers into account and then try and smash them if you can lol. Also, sorry for the long post. I'm an aspie so sometimes I do give out what some think of as pointless info that they feel they don't need, but hopefully this did help you in some way. That was the intent, anyway.
  6. hi all, i’ve been following this thread since pre op to gain insight on what may be realistically in store for me and thought i’d give my update for anyone else who stumbles upon this thread im 5’4 and at my heaviest weighed 207. i was asked to drop to 205 by surgery date. i went in day of weighing 204. was not required to do a liquid diet at any point in time pre op. i am now 10 days post op and i’ve dropped 20 lbs (currently weigh 184). i also woke to a lot of phlegm for the first like 5 days which caused a lot of coughing and trying to get it out of my system so it caused a lot of stress to the biggest incision which lead to a LOT of pain and i want to give my body time to heal properly so i have not done any walking or working out. light chores around the house or a shower and i am absolutely beat, i don’t see how anyone could have the energy. but i plan to start light walks next week when i’m eating in phase 3.

    agreed. People who have lost a lot of weight often have more muscle and bone than someone who's never been overweight. It's because you needed that extra "infrastructure" to hold up the weight. You lose some of that as you're losing weight, but not all of it. The PA at my clinic said you'll probably look about 10 lbs lighter than what the scale says, because of the extra muscle and bone weight (well, and loose skin if you have it). So the lower end of the BMI scale might be too low for the OP. I got down to the middle of my normal BMI scale, and I looked crazy thin. I look much better at the higher end - or even slightly overweight.

    oooo yea - that looks bad. That's kind of how I was after my plastic surgery (and I discovered I was allergic to the glue or tape they used). They had me on prednisone tablets for 10 days, which does the same thing as the cortisone shot will - depresses your immune system so it won't react to allergens. Should do the trick...

    Stalling 1.5 Weeks after getting sleeved

    I was told not to weigh myself for either 7-10 days after surgery or a month, I’d have to check. One of them might have been from a video I watched. I haven’t weighed myself mostly because our scales are like insanely inaccurate. I have a new one coming tomorrow.

    14 lbs in three weeks is pretty normal. Most people who aren't the size of the patients on "My 600 lb Life" seem to lose 15-25 lbs the first *month* after surgery. And since you're a revision patient (weight loss is usually slower for revisions than for virgin surgeries), I'd expect you'd be at the lower end of that range. You're only at the three week mark, so I'm guess you'll be 15 lbs down (if not a little more) by the end of your first month. not having an appetite at all is completely normal. Hunger usually comes back sometime during the first year after surgery. Mine came roaring back at five months out. Honestly, I wish mine had never come back. Although it was weird at first, I must admit it was easy to lose weight when I was never hungry and didn't give a flip about food. THings got a lot harder once my hunger and appetite came back. So take full advantage of that!! also, even though I was a slow loser from the get-go, I lost 235 lbs (at least originally - I gained about 20 lbs back in year 3, which is also common - most people have a 10-20 lb weight rebound after hitting their lowest weight). you are doing absolutely fine - actually a little better than expected since your surgery was a revision. I think you're doing great! P.S. I lost 16 lbs my first month - and I had a virgin surgery AND weighed almost 400 lbs. You're what we call a "light weight" at 222 lbs - and this is also a revision for you - so you're doing very well!

    I’m back after 13 years!

    I am heading into my 13th year after VSG. I come back here from time to time, when I need to touch base with folks who "get" it. I only shared my WLS with a very very few people; and people who have met me in the last several years of course do not know.... and I do not talk diet with anyone really. I talk about being healthy, eating intuitively and things like that. I being my lunch to work and if my staff want to order in lunch - I let them pick and then I find something that I am okay with. burgers ? Fine. I don't get fries. I cut the burger in half, eat a few bites of the burger and then take it a part with a fork and leave the rest of the bread. And I have half a burger for dinner. Coming back here from time to time allows me to re-center myself. And when it is time to lose a couple pounds or if I have lost some more, I come here and update my ticker, and this is a safe place to come back to. I too let about 40 pounds creep back on and a few years ago came back and documented my slow but sure weight loss of... now 50 plus pounds. I started 14 years ago at 320, got down to 175. went back up to 220. Now at 165. I purposely took my time to lose the weight. My goal was to lose 10 pounds a year. I lost 45 in two years, and then took another break for a couple years... have lost 10 pounds in the last 6 or 7 months. I am beyond pleased. I will be 67 in a couple months. You can do this ! And don't beat yourself up over it. Be gentle with yourself.

    At least 3 Years Postop!

    I think I must be the only one here who doesn't count calories or watch what I eat anymore. I'm 3.5yrs post sleeve and I've lost 10 stone. My weight has stayed the same for a year now, and I only weigh myself once a month, it never changes regardless of what I eat. I have gone back to eating a lot of crisps and cakes and chocolate, my addiction is back full time. I just can't eat a lot of it. I suffer with depression a lot and this is when I eat. I live alone, am disabled and just don't get out so I eat. I don't have take alway meals and my meals are very small but I snack constantly. It doesn't bother me now, I don't think I will ever be able to not eat sweet stuff, the extra skin left from weight loss is soul destroying and I hate my body as much now as when I was fat, if not even more. Losing weight to me, has not been as good as I expected.
  15. Hi. I am a food addict and had my gastric sleeve 3.5 years ago. I have lost 10 stone and my weight has stayed the same for a year now BUT the cravings are every single day and I eat something like cakes crisps or biscuits every day. I can't stop. Luckily my weight doesn't go up as the amount I can eat is limited. The surgery does not get rid of the addiction and I don't think i will ever not turn to food when I'm feeling down/sad/depressed which is a lot. I hate my lonely life, I thought losing the weight would make me happy but it hasn't I just now have loads of awful saggy skin that I can't afford to have removed so in a way I'm now worse off for having surgery. I think when you have weight loss surgery you should have loads of follow up therapy to help with the mental and emotional problems but here in the UK it isn't offered. 😢
  16. My second goal is hoping to be stable enough at goal in a year and have a tummy tuck 6 months later. I'm 10 wks post op and have about 100# to go. Am down #35 down since bypass. Glad to hear posts about post surgery.
  17. Just got your all foods, 10 wks postoperative. I'm nervous over no scrpt of foods. But with my measured 1/2 cup meal servings, and a year of Noom preop, I am experiencing a new food each day 80% of good food choices and 20% of higher fat to maintain satiety. I'm lucky I'm a salt snack person over a sweet one. I stalled for 2 weeks and thought that may be due to a cup of popcorn here and there but then a drop of 4.5#. This is an older post but liked the mental discussion of eating. Way overlooked.

    1 Week Stall already!?

    After the second stall, 10 weeks post op, see a 4-5# loss afterwards. So am learning patience and making good decisions. Just got to eat all foods and was nervous at first but realize it is still ensured portion control and after a year of Noom, preoperative, will eat good 80% of time, 20% can be higher fat. Still obtaining from anything not zero sugar.
  20. I had my gall bladder removed years before bypass. My Surgery was extended as my rotted gallbladder ate my bile ducts so they gad to create and replace them. I don't remember much pain after 10 days. Maybe you should make a visit to the surgeon or at least family doctor.

    At least 3 Years Postop!

    I think it is very important to understand where we "are" in life, and where we have come from. Although the "goal weight" for my height and when I started my weight loss journey was to be 145 pounds, I KNEW i would never ever get to that weight. First of all, I have had enough necessary surgeries that plastic surgery and tummy tucks and fat and skin removal was not on the horizon, ever. My surgeon, after looking at my history agreed. But said that MEDICALLY he had to use that number. FINE. WHATEVER. My goal that I used in my own head was 175. I started at 320. I lost 20 pounds before I went to the doctor and asked about WLS, I was so embarrassed.... to weigh that much. I really love my PCP now. She out right told me that IF I had an all around - abdominal - that I would probably lose about 10 to 15 or more pounds. But since I need two knee replacements and I do not do well with anesthesia - she agreed that since I do not have a hanging panus; that it wouldn't qualify for insurance anyway.... I hope to get down to about 162 this go around. But according to my SBMI I am at a 29 - Something I never thought I could accomplish. I LOVE buying regular sized clothing. I LOVE not being the biggest human in the crowd. I will be 67 in a couple months and I am so comfortable in my own skin - no matter how saggy it is !

    3 year update

    It's been just over 3 years since I had my RNY (12/31/19). I am so glad I made the decision to do this. It's not easy and there are challenges, but I feel so much better in my own skin. Stats: 5'10; 44 years old Starting Weight: 336 Surgery weight: 292 Lowest weight: 155 Current weight: 172 Wins in 2022: Last year I really wanted to focus on strength and stamina. I set a bucket list goal of climbing Kilimanjaro (I did it in June!) and spent the first half of the year getting in shape for that. That included regular hikes, but also yoga and strength training classes to build muscle and flexibility. I also did a lot of time on the treadmill at incline (I hate the treadmill - but it served it's purpose). In the second half of the year I wanted to keep growing strength, stamina and flexibility but in a way I enjoy so I started HIIT classes. They are a great workout, give me cardio and strength in one which is a huge win. I also still do yoga once a week and try to hike when I can. At the end of the year I am the strongest and healthiest I can ever recall being. I also did a TON of traveling in 2022 which was great for my mental health. I got to see Equador, the Galapagos, Costa Rice, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Alaska, Victoria CA, Little Cayman, and other places in the US West. It's been amazing. Goals for 2023: In addition to continuing to grow on my physical fitness gains from 2022, this year I need to work on my relationship with food. In general I eat much healthier than I did pre-surgery (I was a total carb addict and rarely ate protein or vegetables), however I still struggle with emotional eating and moderation for trigger foods. I am very consciously NOT dieting. There will be times I eat pasta or sweets but I don't want to eat because I'm bored or <insert any emotion here>. I also want to be aware of the scale, I really want to stay between my low weight and where I am now, but not ruled by it. I'm not sure exactly what this will look like, but will figure it it. I also start a new job in a couple of weeks. I'm super excited about the role and the challenge it will present. It will mean a lot less time to travel, but I'm ready to take on something new. My goal (aside from doing well at the job) is to find a way to balance work and life in a more sustainable way that I have in the past.     Hi Hannah and welcome. So glad to hear how you are basically maintaining your loss. Many do gain a bit of Bounce back weight. Like 10-20 pounds. I have heard it’s usually around year two or three. Maybe your bounce back is just delayed a bit??
  24. I gained over 10 lbs right after surgery. Fluids from surgery... Etc. Unless you are eating the same amount that you did before surgery, you are losing weight. If you can't understand this concept, then it's better to stay off the scale for now. Try to be patient, it happens to most.
  25. Well. I have had the most traumatic experience and I need to vent. I am almost 2 years post op RNY. December 15 I went to work as usual, by 230pm was in the ER with excruciating abdominal pain. That evening had emergency open abdominal surgery for the dreaded internal hernia / small bowel obstruction. Spent 5 nights in the hospital. Happy to be home for Christmas - but just a week later landed back in hospital for another partial small bowel obstruction! Thank god it resolved on it’s own. But now I am PARANOID to say the least. On blenderized food for 2 weeks… praying this is a one time deal. Looks like this happens in 8-10% of patients (lucky me). Any advice? Has this happened to anyone else?
