August Surgery buddies
ShoppGirl replied to Averdra's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think when you go on vacation if you just tell them you had stomach surgery they will understand. Don’t have to get into what it was specifically. Just says special diet prescribed by doctor. Or even it’s delicious but I already ate. All they really care about is knowing that it’s not because you are dissatisfied with the food. I was a savory person before my sleeve too. I had kind of a unique change to where I craved sweets which was another of the things that contributed to my regain. It’s pretty uncommon according to my dr. Post SADI I don’t feel like I am craving sweet as much. Perhaps because I know I can’t have the sweets I really would want but hopefully because that reversed itself again. We shall see. I know that I have been craving fish tacos which is really weird for me. I barely even ate fish pre surgery or post sleeve. Just made myself like once a month because I know its good for me. I don’t think the caffeine restriction is really about how you will feel when you have it. It’s more about affecting your healing and I think I also heard something about it causing irritation or GERD. -
I second the suggestion of getting a few four packs and seeing what you like after surgery. I drank protein shakes the first couple of days when I could barely stay awake to drink them and get my water in. I liked the Fairlife ones the best but many like Premeir. I’m on day 8 of post-op full liquid now (3 weeks for my program) and have shifted toward the savory. I made a turkey bone broth and a beef Asian spiced bone broth before surgery and froze in pint containers. You can buy bone broth or bariatric broth packets as well. I've been rotating between those and “healthy” canned cream soups mixed with Fairlife milk - adding additional protein powder as needed. I spotted my miso in the back of the fridge tonight and am going to add that to the mix tomorrow. I strain everything I make through a fine mesh strainer and add plain protein powder to meet requirements. I think the variety of options is helping me get thru.

Liver Shrinking & Liquid Diet ideas
ShoppGirl replied to Spnswthrt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone’s liver shrink diet is pretty different. Some have all shakes and others are basically just high protein/ low carb. Did your team give you any paperwork? They usually include a very specific list of foods that you are allowed to eat. Finding a couple of protein shakes you like will be a good start though, those are good for most pre op diets, immediately post surgery and even down the road they are ideal to have on hand for unexpected times. I carry a cooler full of water and at least one protein shake or yogurt drink with me whenever I am out so that if I find myself stuck out and don’t have time or can’t find anything on plan I can just have that. I also have a ziplock with a variety of protein snacks that I bring when I know it will be an unpredictable day. Don’t stock up on too many shakes of the same kind though, your tastes may change a bit after surgery. Especially for sweets stuff. Convenience stores are a good way to try singles of a variety of shakes unless you know someone who will drink the rest of the ones you don’t prefer. One tip if your allowed sugar free popsicles is that the tropical flavors are Amazing. Soooo much better than the traditional flavors I thought. -

Yes I went yesterday and got my protein drinks but I didn’t buy a lot of premier protein because the last ones I tried I didn’t like so that way if I don’t like them I can try another brand. I just forgot the broth so I’m going to go today to buy some. -
Food Before and After Photos

i dont have a set recipe, i always just kinda wing it/taste test it...but basically: - 1:3 ratio of grated fresh ginger with chopped green onion/scallions in a bowl - corn oil - sesame oil - salt/pepper to taste - dried chili flakes (optional) - Heat up the corn oil on high heat until its shimmering, enough to be able to coat all the ginger and green onion you have - add grated ginger, cook for 15-20 or so seconds - add green onion, cook for another 20-30 or so seconds (you can add chili flakes here if you want) - transfer to a bowl - add sesame oil to the bowl (about 1 tbsp give or take), add salt pepper to taste. Taste and add what you need based on your preference. - move it all to a resealable jar and add more corn oil until it covers it all. - keep in fridge after it reaches room temperature. Its supposed to be able to last a week in the fridge, but honestly my fam finishes it like 2 days so I can’t confirm that timeline lol. ** I’ve added a bit of sugar to the recipe sometimes depending of what I plan to serve it with…the sugar version works well with duck or lamb and other gamey-er proteins ** ** also use this condiment to fry rice or noodles, YUM ** -
I struggled with most sweeteners at this point, and it was hard to find a protein shake or powder that I could handle -- let alone actively like. As Arabesque said, everyone's reaction to tastes and textures can really vary especially right after surgery. The thing I most wish I'd known ahead of time was not to buy ANY thing in bulk. If you have time before your surgery, see if you can buy small samples of protein powders / shakes / bone broth powders so you can stock up on a variety of options. Some brands make to-go packets that you can buy in singles / sets of 6 / etc and that's a much better bet IMO. (When you've spent $50 on a powder that you absolutely can't stomach, it's aggravating on top of the discomfort of not being able to physically get it down.) (And don't bother taste-testing it ahead of time, I feel like it's a 50-50 chance that you'll like it afterward.)

For my prog it’s the general guidelines rather than individual I guess. I have a Nespresso and k cup machine - the only decaf option in Nespresso is level 6-8 intensity haven’t found any palatable k cups any suggestions?

What is even happening right now??!?!

Ooh I just assumed it was a laxative. I was told that the colace doesn’t make you go it just makes it soft and easier to pass when you do go. I hope you’re change to the one per dose is a good solution. Another option would be to alternate between one and two (take one the first day and two the next, one the third and two the fourth and so on). This is how my NP told me to cut the Colace because I was on two a day (morning and night) and when I cut back to one i got constipated and needed milk of magnesia. -
Disagreement about surgery date
catwoman7 replied to tonimo2020@hotmail.com's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'd do what works for me rather than them. Also you may not even get a date until after that anyway. As someone else said, it has to go through the insurance approval process. Even after mine was approved, they were scheduling a month or so out - and they gave me a couple of different dates to choose from. I actually asked if I could even do it later than the dates they were offering because I was working in education, and my supervisor said she preferred I wait until after the academic year was over (which was maybe another month out) - they said that was fine and gave me a couple more date options, one of which I went with. It all worked out in the end.. -
Try using a lactose free brand and see if that helps. I thought about trying a oat or nut variety but personally decided against those due to recent research on finding higher dosages of toxic metals and they have less protein: "There are 32.7g of protein in 1kg of whole cow's milk, according to the USDA. The density of milk is roughly 1.03g per cm³. So there are 33.7g of protein in 1l of whole cow's milk. There are 8g of protein in 1kg of oat milk, according to the USDA. Using the same density, this equates to 8.24g of protein in 1l of oat milk." Also, I was looking for something more "carbon friendly" but through research found: "Producing 33.7g of protein from whole cow's milk releases 3.15kg of carbon dioxide, according to the University of Oxford. Therefore, 10g of protein releases 0.9kg of carbon dioxide. Producing 8.43g of protein from oat milk releases 0.9kg of carbon dioxide. Therefore, 10g of protein releases 1.1kg of carbon dioxide. So, I went lactose free to get more protein for a bit to see if it fixed my sudden lactose intolerance. It did, but I also found after awhile my intolerance was absent - for which I am thankful since it does cost more! Do what and why works for you. 😁

5 years out, tried semiglutide to restart weight loss
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to KarenLR75's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Thank you for your questions. My dieticians said anymore protein and bodies can't process it so it ends up being a waste unless I'm a hard core body builder / marathon runner athlete. They balked about going up even 100 calories...plus protein doesn't register as feeling full for me, it never has long term. I can drink a 26gram protein drink and nothing. Whereas carbs fill me up, so its a constant battle..or it was... It was agreed that I should start Glp-1's. I've been using this tool for the last few months and all I can say for me they're amazing. The constant mind food harassment has stopped! I no longer feel hungry all the time unless its nearing meal time. Plus my scale is finally showing downward progress - 20lbs+! Again, thank you for asking and your kind words. -
I have never really been an oatmeal fan. Did try overnight oats once witb peanut butter and some other stuff and I liked it but i learned that that added up to a lot of carbs so I didn’t stick with it. Anyways it’s an option on this puree diet and I do have the rolled oats left in the pantry so I thought I’d maybe give it a go again. During purée stage or not, how do you take your oats? Hot or cold? And with what add ins?

They gave me a questionaire to fill out online and sign. One of the questions was what meds are you on and do you suffer from any mental illnesses and I put yes and told them I was on some antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. I'm sure that will come up during the interview but I was afraid that would make me fail the evaluation but if it's easy to pass as long as you're getting the surgery for the right reasons than I guess I have nothing to worry about. The evaluation is today in about 5 hours from now. Mine is through video too. I had the option of driving to my psych eval but I decided to do it through telehealth instead.

Egg White Protein Powder
ShoppGirl replied to JennyBeez's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Just checked the protein water I have and it’s whey protein 😢 -
No not shakes. Clear protein drinks. They are like water consistency so you should be allowed to have them at this stage. Check first of course but if you’re allowed they sell them just about everywhere now. I get protein 2.0 at Walmart. Just search clear protein water or drink.

Brown Rice protein powder - can anything be done with it?
Spinoza replied to JennyBeez's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I think I'm lucky in that I never actually added protein *powders* to anything - I met most of my protein goals with meat and pulses. It did take a bit of planning and monitoring and spacing things out. In the first six months I had some protein shakes and protein yoghurts as supplements but not that many. If you can meet your goals with pea protein surely stick to that. Your horizons will widen as time goes on. Looks like you're doing absolutely great weight loss wise. -
Traveling to Peru after surgery sounds like an amazing adventure, especially with all the nutritious food options available there. Just make sure to check in with your doctor about any travel-specific advice and ensure you have your medications and necessary supplements packed. From my experience, keeping snacks that align with your dietary needs can be helpful. I recently stayed at the westgate in Branson, where they offered great amenities for guests with specific dietary needs, which might be something to look for in your accommodations abroad.

October 2024 Surgery Buddies
Karla83 replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes. 5-6 Protein shakes and clear liquids. Sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles and low sodium broth(which is disgusting). That is it! I think it is ridiculous. I am trying my best, but it is not easy. I would love to have just a bite of anything!! They said I could have 1 bite of protein, but I know I won't be able to stop at 1 bite. Especially after not eating food for a week now. -
I am on 20 mg Omeprazole daily. I was prescribed 20 mg Famotodine, but it isn't working. I am relieved to hear your surgeon is okay with a low dose. At my 6 month, my surgeon's office wanted me to get off of Omeprazole, but my PCP wanted to keep me on as long as the reflux is happening (for fear of ulcers, cancer, etc.). I was hoping the reflux would have gone away by now, so I am just trying to prepare myself for my 1 year check up and to hear what my options are. Thank you for sharing the info with me.

I’m meat all the way. Big carnivore. Big dairy eater. (Not eggs over the last year as my tummy decided it now doesn’t like eggs for some reason). Though at times I supplement meat with plant based proteins like lentils or beans. Like I’m making chicken soup tomorrow & I’ll add lentils to boost the protein content. One issue I have with plant protein (specifically the faux meat) is it’s a processed food. So I’d rather eat real beef, chicken, lamb, etc. than a plant based version. I have tried a couple of vegan dairy options but there’s something about the taste & texture though it could just be me 🙂. We all find what works best for us in regards to food choices & nutrient sources & that’s the most important thing. It may be all plant or all animal or a mix of both. Any way is good.

Best shoes for walking
ShoppGirl replied to ShoppGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The Clifton 9 is the one I just ordered. I don’t have a fleet feet but I have a friend in a little bigger city i will ask her if she has that store or a Foot Locker like @Arabesque suggested. For stuff like this I usually end up either going witb her or ordering a few options and returning whatever doesn’t work. I thought the HOKA were really cute though and like I said two people recommended them to me so I figured I’d give them a try. -
Well I’m early out yet so I’m sure the hunger will be back soon enough. If only it could stay gone forever!!. Yea the chomps does make minis too but they don’t come in the pepperoni flavor and that’s my favorite so I just do half and save the other half for later (I literally have a box of ziplocks in my car for that purpose). It’s 12g protein and 80 calories though so I do half of that with either a baby bell light or a Sargento mozzarella stick which is another 5g protein for 45 or 50 calories. 85 or 90 calories for 11g of tasty protein on the go is pretty good in my book. I will have to try the mini archer beef ones for something different.

My go-to overnight oats: 1 cup oats 1.5 cups unsweeted almond milk 4 scoops premier chocolate protein 2 tbl sp PB2 a splash of vanilla. Makes 4 servings, a ton of protein. Oats are a complex carb so burn slow and balances the protein. It tastes just like a no bake cookie 😍

Share Your Keys To Success! How did you maintain your weight loss (Stay In Maintenance). Come on spill your secrets!
Arabesque replied to Mspretty86's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Almost 5.5yrs post sleeve and also have maintained below goal. I try to eat regularly & to a schedule. Helps me avoid unnecessary snacking and making poor choices because I’m overly hungry. I try to meet protein & fluid goals every day. I don’t track but check ingredients & nutritional content of new foods & recipes where I can and do random checks to ensure I’m not overestimating portions or calories, etc. I try to ensure I eat meat (yep I’m a carnivore), vegetables, fruit, dairy, and complex multi/whole grain carbs everyday. Add beans or lentils to various meals at times. I adopted a way of eating (not a diet) that is working for me & is sustainable. It doesn't stop me socialising or make it a challenge to make food choices. I do some sort of exercise almost every day (about 20 minutes a day total & not traditional ‘exercise’ but stretches & resistance bands). I weigh myself at least a couple of times a week. I can’t control every aspect of my life every day so I don’t beat myself up if I go off piste or decide to treat myself or can’t follow my regular schedule or can’t meet my goals or whatever. As long as it’s not the norm and a regular occurrence, I’ll be okay. And if something changes (ill health, the crap life throws at us, etc.), I’ll look at my options, make changes where I can or just work with my new reality. -
can you live entirely off protein the shakes??
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Absolutely not. Not enough calories, carbs, nutrients. That's basically a starvation diet, and we don't support that here. You need food. For various reasons. The protein shakes are supplements, not complete meal replacements.
