  1. ditto on Fairlife and GenePro. I also found that premier hasn't set as well with me post surgery, but Fairlife has been easy to get down and Genepro is easy to mix into anything (just keep the temp below 140) to bring the protein up. I also like the BariatricPal cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soups. I doctor them up with no salt seasoning and mushroom salt (you can find it at any Asian market and it's amazing) then strain to make sure there are no bits of herb before drinking.

  3. Hi! You had your surgery a month before mine! I get GenePro unflavored protein powder on Amazon. It's 30 grams of protein and just 50 calories. You can put it in a Gatorade Zero shake it up and have your 30 grams of protein. I'll mix it with milk, almond milk, coconut milk etc first and then pour it in my coffee as a creamer. I do green smoothies with water or milk, scoop of protein, frozen fruit, spinach and kale add a little sugar substitute if needed and blend up in the blender! Lots of easy things you can do with it! Nice thing is it has no flavor and will take on the flavor of whatever you add it too. Good luck getting your protein in!
  4. I'll be six weeks out next Monday. The first few weeks do suck. I never got even close to my daily protein and fluids for several weeks. I tried so many different things and just felt like nothing tasted good!! One way that I get about half of my daily protein is to make a smoothie for breakfast. I mix 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries, a scoop of unflavored protein powder (I like the genepro), a couple of dollops of strawberry cheesecake greek yogurt, 2/3 cup of the fairlife milk and a little zero calorie sweetener. I have a Ninja blender and that really works great! f you can tolerate a smoothie at this point that might help with the protein and also add to your daily fluids! I also added the unflavored protein powder to things like broth, cream of chicken broth, no sugar added hot chocolate, sugar free chocolate pudding, etc. I know bone broth has a good amount of protein if you like that. Not eating with your family is really hard. I just keep telling myself that this is not forever and things will be better soon!! Loosing my extra weight is motivation for me!! The hives could be from stress to tell you the truth! My daughter gets hives when she is REALLY stressed. The dr told her to take pepcid. Works like a charm! Keep drinking what ever tastes good to u and know that things will turn around soon!!! Oh, sugar free popsicles and no sugar added fudge bars are really good too!!! You can do this!!!!!

    Unflavored Protein Powder

Yes, I have also used Genepro and vital proteins collagen peptides. Both mix into liquids with no problems and don’t change the flavor or consistency.

    Protein & Vitamins

Hi! I take the Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chewables and the ProHealth Bariatric multivitamin chewable. I bought both from the hospital pharmacy initially, but they were almost $60 together. So, I went online and price matched, each brand’s website was the cheapest VS all other retailers I could find, so I ordered thru each of them. I didn’t even think of using other brands... that is now my today’s “DUH” moment. They offer a slight discount if you auto-ship, so I’ve done that for both. For the multivitamin chewable, I H.A.T.E the citrus flavor; but since I’m past one month post-op, my NP says I can switch to the pill. Honestly, anything would have sufficed as long as I don’t ever have to taste, smell or see the citrus flavor chewable ever again! I like that the pill form comes in a 90-day supply, so that will be helpful in cost per month. I think the Calcium Citrate chewies are $35 if you autoship. I’ve tried the ISO-PURE protein waters, they are fantastic! I’ve also had the protein shakes, I don’t really drink them anymore, my tummy does not agree post-op. I struggle with getting protein in, but I use the GenePro protein powder, it’s the only one my program suggested that isn’t flavored. I figured that would be best because I can add it to anything or any temp of food. It is a little more expensive than the others but it’s great and I have no complaints. Hope that helps! I know it can totally be overwhelming at first. Please reach out if you ever need a support!

I mix genepro in my yurgurt and premier protein shakes Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. At 6 months out since Gastric Bypass, I started my hair loss at the start of December. Currently taking just for hair loss- Collagen, biotin, iron. After talking with my doctor last Tuesday, she told me my iron intake needed to be increased to 50mg up to 100mg per day.and to watch for constipation. We also spoke about meals, currently at about 65-85 grams of protein per day. I add protein to practically every thing I eat. I use Genepro, it can be added to tea and coffee as well as hot and cold foods. It is flavorless and has helped tremendously keeping my protein Intake up. I buy mine on the bariatric pal store. I am due to get some labs this week so I am curious about my vitamin and mineral numbers. Also, I have been discouraged due to the hair loss and the slow down of weight loss. However the doctor told me it is very normal at this stage to slow down losing. That was incredibly reassuring☺️ TLDR;Key takeaways- more protein, more water and check your iron intake. Good luck. ❤️
  11. I was poking around in the BP shop and found this. Might be a good way to try a sample. https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/genepro-medical-grade-unflavored-30g-protein-powder-sample-pack
  12. Perfect, thank you again. I will look into Genepro as well. Yowza, what a learning curve!
  13. I purchased Genepro unflavored powder to mix into foods, but I don't like the way it tastes. Even though it doesn't have added flavoring, it still has a taste and I find it unpleasant. I would not drink it in plain water. When adding protein powder into foods, I prefer to use flavored protein powder for sweet foods like yogurt, pudding, applesauce, and oatmeal. I only use Genepro in savory foods like soup, beans, and pureed vegetables.
  14. What do you do when you can't finish your meal? I prepare an appropriate portion size (about 4 ounces) and eat slowly with small utensils. Sometimes, before I finish the portion of food I prepared, I start to feel full, so I stop eating. I'm sure this happens to most of us on occasion, so what do you do with the rest of the food? I usually put it in the refrigerator for a while and then go back and get the rest later. I don't know if this is the right approach, or if it's a bad habit that will come back to bite me someday. I'm a little worried because I recently saw a WLS YouTuber say that this is a habit that contributed to her regain. I don't like wasting food, but I can get over that. The bigger problem for me is that I plan out my meals to get enough protein, and if I don't eat all of what I served myself, I'm going to be short on protein. I'm not eating an excessive amount of food; I rarely go over 600 calories in a day, and I sometimes get full before I finish something like 2.5 ounces of Greek yogurt or a small salad with 1.5 ounces of chicken. Today, I started eating 4 ounces of pureed black bean soup with half a scoop of Genepro, and I felt full after eating about 3/4 of it in 15 minutes. I only eat three meals per day and no snacks other than protein drinks between meals, but I'm afraid that this might be kind of like cheating, because I'm sort of having the rest of my meal as a snack. I'd love to know how other people handle this situation!

    Hungry at night?

I am the same way and it is real hunger. I keep a small snack for this. I'm not sure how you are eating during the day but it could be that you aren't get a lot of calories during the day, your stomach gets a rest for most of the evening (5 or 6 hours?) and is able to take a little something more. I have some questions on where it comes from as I started a new job last month just before Thanksgiving. I work from 4 pm until around 12-1 am but don't eat at all during my shift (I drink tons of water mixed with my genepro protein for energy though all shift long). My work is at a factory and I'm doing fast, physical work with heavy lifting. I then pick up my son after work (our family works at the same place but different buildings) and I have to wait for him. By the time I get home, I'm really ravenous but can't eat many things still. I have some mild slim jims put aside and will eat a couple of the small snack size. I can't drink anymore and still getting used to the schedule. I have to go back and pick up my husband at 4 am (he works 12 hour shifts) so I don't sleep so much but I'm not hungry again until the next afternoon after sleeping all morning until around 3 pm with my husband. Until I read your post, I thought that was the reason for the hunger but it can be just the time our stomachs can handle it after not eating for so many hours.

So you’re doing fine with using a straw??? I feel like it could help me get more water in, I’ve been scared that it’ll cause gas! I had a problem with that right after surgery and have been scared ever since... anyone have any tips for me eating more protein for breakfast? I’ve done cottage cheese with GenePro protein powder, but am looking for some other ideas. I’ve been sticking to beans/scrambled eggs/cottage cheese. also, has anyone tried BariatricPal foods?? Anything good there?

    Meal planning trackers?

I agree with Mr. Alley Gator. I plan the protein (for me) and then add veggies and starch for my son. So, a typical dinner might be chicken cacciatore and I just eat the chicken and some mushrooms, but I make fettucine for my son. Or a grilled top sirloin with asparagus plus a baked potato for him. I'm happy, he's happy...done! Of course, I'm 5 months out, during the first few months I purchased a lot of frozen meals from Trader Joe's to allow him to eat when I wasn't eating much, without me cooking and cleaning! For me, I would purchase some thick cut turkey and ham from the deli and weigh out two ounces and eat that with an ounce of yummy cheese (usually spoked gouda or havarti). I also use Pinterest for ideas and Myfitnesspal to calculate the recipes (frequently adjusted to add more protein, through Genepro powder or doubling the actual protein) and track my meals. That being said, I would love a good meal planner! So if anyone knows of one, I'm interested!

    I DID IT’nnn

Spitfireash I made broth and put mushrooms and green onion in it just to give myself something to chew on. The mushrooms and green onion has very little to no calories....even my son snd hubby loved it. I lost 11 lbs in 10 days before surgery. I also purchased Genepro protein and put it in everything!! My soup, water bottle, and even the jello I made. That seriously helps with hunger! Drank about 3-4 protein shakes a day so with all the protein I never felt hungry although I’m not going to lie, the first week was tough just because my brain wanted to eat although I wasn’t hungry. Let me know if you have additional questions. Im two days post-op and this is the worst I’ve felt so far. Terrible headache (yes I’m getting all my water in and then some)....I hope it gets better throughout this week.

How to add protein powder to jello?

Thanks I've been looking everywhere for a more simple way to make the sugar free jello pudding pops. I actually purchased the Genepro? really wasn't sure which one to use, this is what GNC recommend. I have a quick question please. Can I use almond milk in place of the skim milk? I have watched so many different youtube videos that I think I heard somewhere that the almond milk will not work? Thanks so much in advance for you help.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Having it in the Gatorade Zero is a terrific idea!! Thanks!!! Yeah; I think I will try the shakes again. A lady I met at the protein shake isle at Sam’s Club who also had surgery a year ago, told me that I’d be able to get down only about half the shake at a time. To try anymore in one sitting would be a waste because your tummy can’t process anymore than half at a time. I threw the boxes away already and stored them all in my pantry so I can’t really return them now. mind if I ask was it cheaper to buy the GenePro online? I got mine at GNC locally but it was $38 for a 30-day supply. I’m hoping to buy cheaper next time.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hello, oh no lol I gave away all my boxes I purchased before surgery in preparation for after lol. I did get genepro it just came in the mail yesterday yay! I threw a scoop in a lil Gatorade zero and I managed to get it down. I also managed to make some egg salad puréed with some chicken broth and it was so good I managed to get it down. It’s been so weird I can tolerate yogurt and sf pudding one day and the next I can’t touch it. It’s literally been a battle daily but I’m throwing powder in everything I can lol to get my protein up. I can finally drink water normally now except I can only drink alkaline water regularly purified water hurts. Anyways it’s nice to have people going through the same thing to talk to. Let me know if you try those shakes again.

    Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?

Hi Luckz! I had mine on 11/24. Yes, I also cannot tolerate the protein shakes now, they honestly disgust me. Don’t tell my hubby that, he just bought me two more cases. My dietician suggested that if you don’t like something initially, to give it a second try 7 days later. It’s supposed to be better the second time. They just stare at me now whenever I open the fridge. 🤣 have you tried protein powder? I got the GenePro one, it’s a little more expensive than the others, but my dietician says this is one of the best. I honestly got it only because it was unflavored, I hoped I’d be able to throw it in anything I ate to help get the protein numbers in each day. I mix it with cottage cheese and it’s been delightful! What do you like these days? Anything that’s worked for you?? I’m all ears!

    Whey isolate protein powder

Hi, I usually use genepro just for the texture and lack of extra taste, less calories and more protein. I did try Iso (without the taste) but I quickly stocked up again on my genepro. I'm working on adding more protein but the last labs I had done, the Dr said to up them by 25% over the ones I was given because the bypass will lose some of the nutrients. My protein now is around 80-90. I get about 40 of that from genepro and the rest from what I eat. Everyone is really different with these surgeries and if it works for you, you stick with that. As long as it's ok'd by your NUT and labs are ok, go with what you like.

A normal day of food post op?

I am just now at 3 months. Everyone is really different with this honestly. I had a tough time-just passing Thanksgiving, I am getting a bit more used to foods I can handle but I will be honest and say there are a lot of limits. Some days are still worse then others-Doc said that's normal for the first year. I try to eat my normal keto diet from before but still have to add Atkins shakes. Cold does better for me then hot so I will sometimes freeze a drink in a bowl for lunch and have that. It definitely helps. Turkey meatballs are my staple these days if I can mix it with a little sauce. They say bread is difficult but I will have at least one or two slices of Aldi zero carb bread- it gives me a lot of fiber and some protein. I toast it then put either the turkey meatballs (smushed and mixed) onto the bread then let it get a bit moist or, if it's a good day, I can try some egg and then chicken that's been boiled with keto barbecue sauce (just a tad-it has about 3 net carbs). Sometimes I can handle deli meat and cheese seems to be fine for me if I really chew well and take tiny bites. I also have my tablespoon or two of genepro for the missing protein. Veggies are still really hard for me but I do take a v8 green and I have been trying little bits of apple. Banana was pretty hard and other fruits can be a toss-up depending on the day. I started to mix a bit of sweet potato mashed with almond milk and some of my boiled chicken together for some meals and peas mashed can be ok if I can handle it. Popcorn that's air-popped is doable for me and seeming the easiest to take down in small amounts (no butter or salt-just plain). I will take it as a treat- a cup or so. I also live on the sugar-free popsicles with 15 calories when my store has it in stock. Tillapia works for me some days as well if it's not baked or fried but boiled in the bag. My calories are still only at around 800 on good days but I'm exercising well and labs are showing the genepro is doing well with the protein. Probably not the best example for you as you can be better able to handle varieties then I am right now but it's where I'm at. Had bypass Sept 1.
  25. My plan allowed refried beans in the puréed stage, but they said to purée the beans before eating them (even though they’re already mashed, there are still some lumps). I don’t see why you couldn’t do that unless they’re concerned about the carbs or the fiber or something. I ate a lot of refried beans with Genepro during my puréed stage! i think the reasons plans differ so much is that everybody responds slightly differently to the surgery, so there’s no one single plan that works for every patient. I think most surgeons do their best to come up with a plan that will work for most patients, and this is probably based on their own patients’ experiences. There are definitely similarities among almost all plans, but I’m guessing each surgeon tweaks the plan a bit as they go. Maybe yours noticed that a lot of patients had problems with beans during the puréed stage. It would be easiest to use the strictest rules for everyone, but they also try to balance it with compliance, because they realize that a lot of patients won’t stick with a plan that is excessively restrictive. I’ve adhered pretty closely to my surgeon’s plan, except that I stayed on puréed foods for a few weeks longer than required because I was afraid to try soft foods at two weeks and didn’t want to take any chances. I’m also not eating as many calories as they say I should because I’ve found it’s practically impossible to get 800-1000 calories within the guidelines they gave (3 meals per day, no more than 4 ounces per meal, no snacks other than protein drinks between meals), and I’m not hungry, so I don’t really want to eat any more than 500-600. The only thing I’ve added that they said not to but I’ve seen others eat is low-carb tortillas. A lot of people here love the 1 net carb tortillas from Mr. Tortilla, so I bought some even though my plan says no tortillas for the first year (I’m pretty sure they mean regular tortillas, and they might be ok with the 1 net carb tortillas, but I haven’t asked).
