    Food Before and After Photos

    Blueberry vanilla (Semi scratch made) protein waffle. With the added yogurt and blueberries it was a little tart but still good. I think pre WLS I would eat 2 of these, or 1 with sides but I can’t remember anymore. I think the biggest change is that I prioritize protein in meals now and pre WLS I didn’t even think about it. How does everyone feel about breakfast? Skip or no? What about “breakfast foods”?

    Can’t eat anything

    I was like this. I managed 300 calories until 6 months. I was super restricted. My team were ok as long as I was well monitored and as long as I kept trying and drank most of my liquid allotment. I take PPI's twice a day and still need antacid. Food smells repulsed me. I couldn't eat eggs, meat or fish. I ate yogurt, soups, deli meats and cheese. I drank milk, coffee and Ribena. I forced myself to eat 6 tiny meals a day. My family were super worried about it. I managed a little better every day especially when the pressure was taken off me { I pressured myself } I took me 2 years to eat chicken, lamb, eggs and to this day can not eat salmon and oily fish. Stick with your team, they will get you through it. It will get easier.

    Sadi is so lonely

    Hello! Thank you for posting here as well! I'm scheduled to have my 'virgin SADI/sleeve' on Monday morning and I was SO happy to read your post so I could get a realistic idea of what my life will be like post-surgery. I hadn't gotten much feedback yet on what to expect after a couple of years and had only read that the malabsorption would diminish after 18 months. Your experience seems to match up with that pretty closely. I've got the same three week diet guidelines to follow post-op; do you remember any particular foods that gave you trouble as you were adjusting to life post-op initially? Or do you have any suggestions on what to start with in the soft food week? For the liquid diet I've almost entirely relied on shakes and a few helpings of sugar free jello. Today I got some zero sugar yogurt and added that, and had a sugar free popsicle. I know that I'll have to be eating / drinking room temperature for at least the first week if I remember right.

    i know this may sound too simple, but really, you just have to eat more. If not in volume, then in calories. it doesn't have to be carbs if you can't tolerate them, but it can be fats. there are 9 calories per gram of fat..more than double the amount of calories per gram of either protein or carbohydrates. avocados (240 cals for just one medium one). macadamia nuts (204 cals for 1 oz)...if you don't like nuts, try the nut butter version. "super' full fat greek yogurt i.e., 9% M.F. (200 cals for 3/4 cup) and my personal favourite and go-to high calorie/low volume snack: chicharron! (i.e., pork rinds): 150 cals for 1oz, 9g protein, 5g fat, ZERO carbs. p.s. also, eating so little carbohydrates is probably contributing to what you say you are not liking about your appearance (i.e., looking too skinny or gaunt). most people find that re-introducing (a "normal" amount of) carbohydrates into their diets after a long hiatus rounds out their appearance again and reduces that gaunt look.
  5. the SADI is a fairly new surgery and isn't very common - which is probably why the office staff isn't that well versed in it. Although if the surgeon is going to be offering that surgery, they really need to get the office staff up to snuff, because they're the people you're usually going to see when you're there as far as red, purple, yogurt, and fudgsicles, they're probably talking about the day or two before the surgery, and not the regular pre-op diet that many of us have to do for a week or two before the surgery. I've had about four surgeries, plus a couple of colonoscopies, and having a completely liquid diet for the day or two before with nothing red or purple is pretty standard with any procedure. They don't want anything in your G/I tract (that's why they say only liquids), and red and purple fluids look like blood on the equipment they use, so they tell you to avoid anything red or purple.

    Sleeve to bypass question

    They will create a small stomach pouch, same as in a regular bypass. But be aware that even with bypass, the ability to eat more returns over time. If it helps for comparison, though, I can tell you that at 3 months out with gastric bypass, I can eat about 3/4 c yogurt with a little bit of fruit, or 2-3 oz chicken with maybe 1/4 cup cooked veg in one sitting. In both cases, this would take me about 15 minutes to eat.

    October 2018 Sleevers

    I’m never on these boards, but I guess I still get emails from this thread. Still out here. Still down around 130 (up about 15) and holding steady (with Ozempic). Still hating the side effects of massive GERD and food sensitivities to almost everything (even stuff you wouldn’t expect - dairy, raw veggies, etc). I miss Greek yogurt and carrots most of all. Sometimes I eat them, but instantly regret it. Every year at my follow up doc wants me to convert to bypass for the GERD, but the first surgery was so bad I refuse to do a second one unless I’m dying . I can only imagine what the bypass would do to my food issues. But I do fit in plane seats more easily and it’s easier to buy clothes because I can buy from most stores. I’m sure I’m healthier, although my numbers were pretty good pre-surgery. My knees hurt less. I still have fairly complicated feelings about having done it - not sure I would do it again, but do think I made the best decision I could at the time.

    August Surgery buddies

    Just checking in. Day one of liquids. So far so good but I’m just keeping myself busy. I dropped off my trunk load of donations and went to the car wash to vacuum and ran it through the express wash. My husband drives a big truck so he will be picking me up in my car and I didn’t want him to see it like it was. Filled it with gas and picked up my groceries. They had all my shakes so I did exactly what I warn everyone about. I bought a bunch so hopefully I like them post surgery. Now to cool off and drink my “lunch” before my zoom meeting at 2:00. I am allowed broth but I really don’t care for it. Maybe I will have a yogurt. I’m allowed that too. I don’t really love it without a bit of fruit or granola though because it tastes slightly bitter to me. How is everyone else doing on the preop diets and prep. I feel like whenever I check something off my list I think of something else. But all the really important stuff is done.

    Working Out

    Swimming is what really ramps up my hunger and so far nuts and avocado really help. A pre workout meal is Chobani zero greek yogurt, 2 oz, half ounce walnuts, 6 grapes. I'm almost 4 months post op. I'm still eating 3 oz at a time, 3 meals a day, 1 snack.
  10. Today (January 16th) is my birthday. 🥳 This year I opted out of the birthday dinner’s I’m usually taken to by friends and family. I am 40 days post op and while I am now in the “eat whatever I can phase” ofc I’m following the low carb / high protein / no sugar diet I’m advised to follow by my bariatric nutritionist. So for my birthday this year, I didn’t want to go to a restaurant knowing I can’t eat too much food right now + I didn’t want to be tempted by restaurant foods. But I did want to know if anyone else had surgery close to their birthday like me and if so, did you allow yourself a birthday treat? Like a cupcake 🧁? I haven’t had sugar (other than my protein shakes and yogurts) since late November so idk how it will affect my stomach either but I was thinking of just getting a little birthday cupcake 🧁 for myself tomorrow. I’d love to hear others input or experience. Thanks! ☺️

    Constant nausea and dry heaving

    A good way to try different shakes without investing quite as much is to find a convenience store that has a variety of them individually. I’m not sure how many non dairy or other less common versions they will have but I guess it’s worth checking out. Hopefully you find one you can tolorate and you can one by one add things to it to increase the nutrition. Maybe just start by not adding the yogurt to the ones you are making since dairy does seem to be a common issue that people develop post surgery. Also, it could be the sugar in the fruit is too much or even the peanuts in the peanut butter. Maybe try almond butter or something else?? Like @SleeveToBypass2023I suggested, i would just keep trying all different store bough shakes or even differnt combos of the homemade ones until you find SOMETHING you can keep down. Once you do you can add to it from there.

    Food Before and After Photos

    Yesterday’s lunch and dinner and today’s breakfast. Lunch- after pics of the salad and mini cannolis. I only ate 2 bites of soup as lunch just wasn’t my jam. Dinner- only grabbed an after of the salad but ate a small roll with about a tsp butter, 3/4 the steak, 4 bites of the underside of the chicken (it was dry and the sauce was gross), both carrots, 2 bites of asparagus (less than 1/2 a spear), and about 1/3 of the mashed potatoes underneath. I ate about 1/4 of the 2 desserts offered because I split with a friend. I also had some 1/3 cup street corn dip, 2 mini pita, half an eggroll filled with black beans and corn, a mini eggroll, and 2tbsp hummus as a snack yesterday and chips with queso during bingo. I gave my alcoholic drink tickets to someone else because after half a glass of champagne I was done drinking alcohol. Breakfast- coffee had half and half and I drank it all. Drank about 6oz of the milk but ate the yogurt and oatmeal. I didn’t eat any of the mid-morning pastries offered today and the boxed lunch I picked was a roasted vegetable wrap with balsamic dressing, 4oz of potato salad, a cookie and I stopped and picked up green beans from the truck stop. I ate 1/4 cup of the green beans, 3/4 of the potato salad, pulled off about a 1/3 of the tortilla before eating the wrap and gave away the cookie. I can’t wait to have surgery next week because within 1-3hrs of eating I’m in unbelievable pain. I can chug my water like I could a few months ago for the same reason and I’m over it.

    Ice Cream

    I can eat it, but not much of it because it makes me feel sort of sick. I know a few bypass people who don't tolerate it at all. Some people can handle it, though - but it's got a lot of sugar and fat in it, so even if you tolerate it, I wouldn't eat much of it. Just an occasional, small treat. I do eat sugar free fudgesicles occasionally. Or I'll stir some unsweetened cocoa powder into some low-calorie vanilla yogurt and top it with a couple tablespoons of sugar free Cool Whip and a few berries to make a "sundae".

    May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁

    Surgery was on May 1. Deep into the puree diet. 2 protein shakes a day and I mix up the meals with scrambled eggs, zero sugar yogurt, tuna fish, chicken salad, broth, cream soups, refried beans. Anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2 cup, I'm learning how to listen to my body and when I feel full. Going back to work the first week of June. Hydration is still a chore but if I focus I can keep the right amount flowing. Once or twice I've had an urge to nap after my noon meal but no pain, nausea or anything like that. Feeling great!
  15. It seems to be all carbs that give me trouble, although "bad" carbs make me sick almost immediately. My body went from constantly craving carbs to seemingly not being able to process them anymore. It's really weird. And frankly, annoying. And I agree, a few of my doctors are seeing numbers on the scale and bmi and not me as a person and my overall progress. I've lost 246 pounds from my highest weight. And 213 pounds from my original surgery weight. And that still doesn't seem like it's good enough!!! My current weight is lower than some other people's final ending goal weight. THEIR doctor's are ok with that, yet MINE seem to think I need to lose more, more, MORE!!! This is how people fall into disordered thinking and eating. I'm trying very hard for that NOT to happen to me again, and this is not helping. Also, yes I have started adding a Chobani Complete liquid Greek yogurt to my snacks. They have 20g of protein, 15g of carbs, and 180 calories per serving. I've got myself up to 40 carbs per day with that (without working out) and seem to be doing ok, so I'm going to go up to 45 carbs daily without working out (that's where I was at but with workouts) and then sloooowly try to increase from there and see if I can. My body just really resists carbs, so it's really slow going.

    3 years PO & Struggling!!

    My suggestion is eat more vegetables and drop the packaged, processed snacks and protein shakes altogether. You are no longer healing from surgery or dropping a ton of weight quickly, so you don't need 120g protein, or even 100g anymore. If you can eat 3oz chicken breast twice a day, plus a serving of Greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast, you've hit your protein needs and then some. Get your protein from lean meat, beans, nuts, and seeds (not as much from dairy). Have a leafy or non-starchy vegetable at every meal. Eat fruit for dessert and raw veggies and nuts for snack.

    Full Liquid diet rules

    All programs are different. My program allows cream soups and other blended soups(fat free lower sodium) , strained and thinned out with water so that there are no chunks. I can also have yogurt not fruit or added stuff in it. Do not use the isopure unflavored. It tastes very flavored! And its gross. I can not mask the flavor at all with anything!!!! I cant wait for my follow up on Thursday, hopefully I get to move on to what my program calls “soft and mushy” foods

    Food Before and After Photos

    Meals from the last few days- those cheesy stuffing waffles with over easy eggs and griddled tomatoes (clearly didn’t eat it all) cottage cheese mixed with cooked onions, bell pepper, and mushrooms then microwaved with marinara and turkey pepperoni (this I will definitely eat again) lemon poppyseed bread with ricotta, sliced apple, and honey (ate about 3/4 the bread and ricotta) polenta with French onion roasted green beans (a kit from the produce section) and shrimp, onions and tomatoes in veggie broth (the kids had theirs mixed with rice) spicy Thai chili tuna mixed with nonfat yogurt, more reduced sugar Thai chili sauce, and shredded lettuce. Only ate 10 of the Thai chili rice crisps cottage cheese plate with an everything bagel, strawberries, mini bell peppers, tomato slices, and lettuce (ate half the bagel, most of the cottage cheese and peppers and about half everything else)

    February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

    The exercise specialist said to eat something 20-30 minutes before a workout. I started a serving greek yogurt with PBfit2 chocolate and one scoop of protein as the pre workout snack. After a workout I just drink a premade protein shake. She explained by getting protein in post workout it will keep your body from using muscle as fuel, it will use the protein you take in. As I continue to workout, I'll snack before and after my workouts. I've been going a little longer with my cardio. 45 minutes to an hour on a stationary bike. Nothing to crazy, I try to keep my heart rate in the 90's.
  20. Today I tried Panara Breads Cobb salad. I did not like the green goddess dressing but my aunt absolutely loved it. I ate my sandwich and brought the salad home to eat with my bolthouse farms yogurt ranch and it was delicious. I got half sandwich and half salad and that was enough for lunch and dinner. I also like chick fila’s market and south west salads and recently tried Wendy’s apple pecan salad which was okay but the second time it gave me an upset stomach which was weird. Where else can I get a good salad. I am looking for places that I can go with others that are not on a diet.

    Working Out

    I cannot eat before working out, I feel nauseous so if I work out at 5am, I don't eat and if I work out 5pm I do my best not to eat 2hours before my workout, but a yogurt afterwards would probably be great! I am eating around 1000 calories a day and have been for about 5weeks now. But nuts sound yummy! I will have to incorporate that!

    Fruit & Bypass

    --- It could be that a lot of people (like meeeee) may have been attributing symptoms to dumping syndrome when it was foamies, IBS, food intolerances, etc. But also just from a social-stats standpoint, people are more likely to complain about their bad times than come celebrate when things are just progressing normally/fine/ok. As for fruits, my personal experience would caution that as you're introducing new fruits to your diet, eat them with a protein you already know you tolerate well. The protein could help the fruit's sugars from just hitting your stomach straight up. And at first at least, maybe lean more towards fruits with good fibre content? I had a lot more luck with blueberries, raspberries and blackberries at first than other options. Even now, I can eat black cherries if they're mixed into some greek yogurt, but if I try to eat them on their own or with oatmeal it's just too much on my system (at this stage). (And just FYI: blueberries with natural peanut butter? So fricking satisfying. On it's own, or on a cracker / toast if you want that bit of crunch)

    February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

    Sorry, I realized that probably didn't come across as well meaning as I intended. Now I don't have a big craving for sugar. If I do I just add monk fruit sweetener to Greek yogurt. I had a keto sugar free cheesecake recipe that used monk fruit sweetener. Also used almond flour for the crust. I'm not the best baker, but It was pretty good. I thought about making one and putting PBfit chocolate in it to make a PB chocolate cheesecake. 😃

    Almost a year out

    Ok, so I'm 2 years and 4 months out from my 1st surgery and 1 year 3 months out from my revision. I'm still losing (trying to stop losing but so far I'm still losing an average of 4 pounds per month) so I haven't experienced the rebound weight gain yet. I can tell you I eat popcorn all the time. I also eat smokehouse almonds, cheese cubes, salami and/or peperoni slices for snacks. I eat Rebel ice-cream, keto brownies, sliced apples mixed with fresh blueberries and raspberries, Greek yogurt with fresh berries and monk fruit sweetener mixed in, keto cake with sugar free icing, French toast with keto bread, fresh berries, and sugar free syrup. If I want "guilty" food, I have something like steak, 2 spoonfuls peas mixed with mozzarella cheese, and 2 spoonfuls of Bob Evans mashed potatoes. I don't tolerate carbs very well, so I have to be careful with them. I also have kettle chips fried in avocado oil, 1 packet (instead of my former usual 2-3) of oatmeal such as cinnamon apple or banana cream, and minestrone soup and crackers (only like 4 or 5). Everything is a balance. Nothing in excess, no large portions, no "off plan" foods too often. Just a little here and there and whatever you have should be fine. Just remember to keep working out, keep moving your body, keep prioritizing protein and you should be good.

    February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

    I can get up to 60+ grams of protein from food. Mainly from chicken, turkey and eggs. I still have one protein shake for breakfast. My 1st snack I eat an egg wrap with a couple ounces of deli turkey and fat free cheese. My 2nd snack is 70 grams of Greek yogurt with protein powder and a couple tsp of PBfit2.
