    Crying after apt today

I agree with the previous posters. It is definitely all worth it in the end and your health is very important. If it is a lot safer to lose a bit first then you will be better off. You will also find adjusting to band life is easier if you have gone through liquid dieting phases and worked on weight loss before being banded. Surgeons are different and I bet you I can find three different qualified surgeons in my town that have vastly different ideas about what they prefer. Preliminary weight loss may improve your chances for a healthier outcome so most surgeons will probably suggest this. However, with this kind of surgery perhaps it would be best to check with another surgeon as well for an initial consultation. Can I ask what your BMI is? I was curious if the recommended loss is more due to a high BMI or a personal preference for your surgeon.

Gastrectomies have been done since the 1800s. Not exactly new. For weight loss, that's new. Since about the 70s, longer than the band. Cheers.

    Crying after apt today

Relax do what surgery you think is best for you. Know all the pros and cons to both and then make your choice. I don't know how much you weigh but it is probably best to lose some weight first you want to give yourself the best chance to come out ok. And yes the liquid diet is going to suck but it will be worth it.

    Crying after apt today

a second opinion for any surgery is the smartest thing to do. then research both surgeries yourself and decide which one you prefer for yourself. i wouldn't bash any weight loss surgery that worked for that person. because being obese is the real killer.

Actually, it's a pretty good suggestion and long term a sleeve is safer than a band. A band can do one heck of a lot of damage to your stomach and your esophagus. Why would you want to reverse a lap band? The only reason to remove a band is because the band itself is causing problems. For what reason would you care to regain your excess weight?

    Hair Loss . . . Really?

Hi Marko! I would not worry so much about hair loss. It does happen to some, especially when your body goes through "trauma" such as a dramatic weight loss. But because we are losing weight pretty slow, I haven't seen anything too bad. My hair stylist actually got the band about six years ago, and since she knows so much about hair, I asked her for me. She told me that, if it happens, it will probably happen some time between month 3 and 6 post-op, and that DON'T WORRY, because this time, the hair WILL grow back! So no matter what, the hair you lose after surgery DOES grow back. Depending on age, it may not grow in as thick, but it will come back. I would take being healthy over having all my hair any day. Good luck on your weight loss journey!
  8. I had my surgery almost 3 months ago now and so far I have lost a total of 47 lbs since the actual surgery date. I feel like I haven't lost enough or that I'm doing well. I feel ok and at first I was losing weight consistently but now I've been stuck at 189 for the past 2 weeks. I admit I haven't been able to get as much exercise as I should being that I leave my house at 530am and don't get back home until 730pm sometimes later. Everyone compliments me and says that I look good and can tell I have list weight. Any ideas. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App
  9. Once in a while someone has a bad surgery... leaving the stomach too big. Have you had an image taken of your current sleeve to see whats up there? Once that is proven to be ok (or not) you can double down on an eating plan. Please do go back to your Dr, or see if you can go to another if possilbe if you have lost confidence in her. And yes, use Myfitnesspal, protein first, and drink all your water! I took 3 years to get to goal, so its not all fast and easy for many. I was at around 50 pounds at a year. I had to just keep going on, and tried some different things... I tryed the 5:2 which got me to goal after gaining 20 pounds.... at this time I am up around 13 pounds from goal again.... trying the 5 day pouch test, and have lost 5 pounds of water weight in two days so far. Just keep on trying girl! Don't give up.... I know when i try and just be "normal" and eat how I used to, without keeping track of what I eat.... I GAIN.

    Hello Friends!!

Hey December bandsters! I was just banded on 12/27. I am doing well . . still have a bit of pain and am on a full liquid diet for 3 weeks . . . that is what my doctor recommends. I am very excited for 2012 and the changes in my weight and health and energy level. I would love to join your little group and we can offer support to each other. : )
  11. My idea is to ratchet down your expectations about the speed of your weight loss. You are putting a lot of unnecessary stress on yourself and your wishes for how fast weight loss will proceed may not be entirely realistic. I lost a total of 40 lbs in the first three months (I started at a higher BMI than most btw) and I was pleased and my bariatric team told me I was doing fantastic. In my book you should be thrilled about your weight loss. Occasionally stalls and pauses along the way are completely normal. Don't worry about them unless you think you are not following your program correctly to the tune of eating several hundred/thousand calories per day more than you should be, which I would guess you are not!
  12. Hi everyone! I’m new here. I am going to Dr Carmody’s office in Richmond, Virginia this week for my initial consultation. I am thinking of getting the gastric sleeve surgery. I’m so nervous! I have been obese my entire life. I really gained weight when I was pregnant with my 2nd son and never lost the pregnancy weight. That was 11 years ago! I considered the surgery 8 years ago, went to the seminar, visited the nutritionist, had the EGD... but I decided against it because I didn’t have the money at the time. A few questions for you all. 1. Did you work on weight loss before your consultation? I’m afraid that I will have a tougher time losing the prescribed weight before surgery if I’m working hard on weight loss now. 2. How long did you stay in the hospital after your gastric sleeve surgery? 3. Does your weight loss team offer support groups? If so are they worthwhile?
  13. Looking great! We were the same starting weight and at 12 weeks I am sitting in a stall at 230 pounds. Very motivating to see your pics!

confused surgery in 40 hrs now

I think it is completely normal, especially when you don't have that support. But like everyone here I am sure you've done the weight loss thing before and it DOESN'T work!!! We lose then gain back and usually more than we lost. As for me, I wasn't feeling too bad until they wheeled me into preop..then I started to get really nervous...I am 8 weeks post op and feeling so much better in myself, I KNOW I made the right choice! and though I have had moments of frustration, I know that I will get there in the long run. This band is a journey of ups and downs and you are bound to have some downs again just remember that it is a long process, not a quick fix and at times you may be discouraged (the weeks of plateauing weight, waiting for those fills, gaining back due to no restriction), especially if you have that negativity! Just make sure you come on this site and get your support from here and from co workers if you can! finding that sweet spot will take time so hang in there. we will all get there in the end! I love my band!
  15. Well as I approach the 3 month mark, which is still a week away, I continue to lose weight. It is going slow and steady now but that's just fine. I am happy to with the weight loss and love being under 400 lbs and slowly working towards my next goal of 350 lbs. Another 2 lbs gone this week just goes to show that I do continue to lose the weight and am keeping the weight off. This last couple of weeks have been pretty stressful and my temptations to emotional eat have been higher then normal. I have been resisting fairly well but for some stupid reason we bought grape juice this week and I just about drank the whole thing in two days flat. One thing I am to avoid is liquid calories and all grape juice is is liquid calories. Sure there is some nutritional value to it but it's more carbs then it is helpful. At least at this point in time for me it is. Last Sunday Karen and I went to the workout room here at the apartments and I found myself rather lost in there as to what to do. I have never taken any weight training classes and now think to myself that I should have. I look at the equipment and I understand how a lot of it works but I have no idea how to put together a routine. I should probably do some research before I go back there again so I have a solid plan as to what I will do in there. So for now it's getting back to the Biggest Loser workout DVD's that I have been doing. So down to 394 lbs this week. It just dawned on my that it will be just another 9 lbs and I will have reached the 100 lbs lost mark. It's hard to believe sometimes that first of all that I did weigh that much but secondly that I have lost that much. It's a great feeling to know that I have clothes now that don't fit not because they are to small but now that they are to big. So pushing forward I will continue to do and keep on losing those pounds to live a healthier and happier life!

Week 11 Post Op - Continuing to lose the weight

Congratulations on your weight loss so far!!! You've done an amazing job, and you'll hit your next goal in no time at the rate you're going. I've been researching weight training for women to add to my gym routine. There's a really good book called The New Rules of Lifting (there's a version for men and another for women) that you might want to think about checking out. Here's a link to it on Amazon... I haven't read the version for men, but I joined an exercise forum, and the guys speak pretty highly of it. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/New-Rules-Lifting-Maximum-Muscle/dp/1583332383]Amazon.com: New Rules of Lifting: Six Basic Moves for Maximum Muscle: Lou Schuler, Alwyn Cosgrove: Books[/ame] Good luck!
  17. Hi all, just checking in to see how everyone is. I have been banded for 4 weeks and have lost 15 pounds. I was wondering if this is good or just normal weight loss. Can you tell me how much you lost in the first month? I have just been trying to stay under 1k calories a day, kinda hard somedays & others i am trying to get in atleast 800 before i go to sleep. Any pointers at this stage would be greatly appreciated.

    Monthly Weight Loss

I been trying to figure out the same thing. I had gastric bypass March 16th and my surgery weight was 235 and I have been 208 for the past week. Am I doing something wrong?

"The Biggest Loser: The Workout" DVD

Ok so I knew I was ready to up my workout routine so this week I started doing the "The Biggest Loser: The Workout" DVD. On the DVD they have a 6-week workout plan and for the first 3 weeks they have 2 workout routines they want you to alternate through every other day for 6 days a week and then the second 3 weeks you change to the other 2 workout routines again every other day for 6 days a week. The first set alternates between a low impact cardio workout and a body sculpting workout (weight training). The first night I started off with the cardio workout. Boy did I definitely work up a sweat and felt my heart rate go up. I was breathing heavy and really was feeling the exercises. The great part I found about the video is the trainer (Bob) was very much telling the viewer to only go as far as their body would be ready to go. I pushed as hard as I could because I want to make sure I get the best bang for my buck so to speak. The second night was the body sculpting. First off I had no idea what they were going to do and first off they said grab your weights. What???? Weights??? Well I don't have weights so Karen told me to grab a couple of cans of vegis. Hey it worked. So the work out was going great until they had you lay down on the floor for some abs exercises. OMG that was hard. I still did what I could but I tell you what today I am most definitely feeling that workout. But hey that's ok because just like the walking that I started back in mid-October it will get easier as time goes on and I am working for something better. So tonight was the third night and back to the low impact cardio and yes I pushed just as hard as the first night. It feels great to work up and good sweat and know it's not from climbing stairs or short walk across a parking lot. I am still walking 6 days a week also. I know that is still important to get out and do the daily walk as it will help keep my muscles limber for the harder workouts plus it is a great example even at this young of an age for Nicholas to see his mommy and daddy out walking every day for enjoyment and fitness. So now it's going to be interesting to see how well the weight comes off and how quickly my body size changes too. Hopefully the body sculpting exercises will help my body shape come down nicely too. :scared2:

    May 5, 2009 Day after pre-op

Today is May 5, 2009 The 1st to many Blogs I hope..... The day after my Pre-op appointment. Where do I begin... I was so scared and nervous most of all because of the Blood work, the date approaching and just overall scared. I have been praying for so long that I could have this surgery and after being turned down 3 times the date was set for June 18, 2009 only for me to receive an email stating that my date could be pushed up to May 21, 09 !!!! This is Great because it will be done sooner than later which is also very stressful because I am scared. Just a little. I have so many High hopes and expectations! I really truly want it all to go well and I really want to lose this weight, for several reasons the most important Health and the ability to finally become a Mother! I started my journey at 289.1 lbs on November 2008 only to increase to 297.3 lbs after being turned down 3 times. I called and nagged the hospital for an answer I call and asked the insurance company for an answer. I submitted an appeal and went off to visit realities in the South. upon my return home I phoned the hospital for any update to which I learned "nothing as of yet sweetie" The very next day the young lady who handles the insurance company calls and tells me I HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR SUGERY! I would have to wait however till the letter the healthcare provider mailed out. I received the letter the very next day. My surgery was set for June 18, 2009. A week or so later I received an email stating it could be pushed up to May 21, 09, if i wanted? If I wanted?! I jumped on it! My pre-op was set from 2 weeks from April 20,09 I was overjoyed! I started thinking "Oh no I'm fatter now than when I started I need to lose weight". I also needed to learn how to eat right and start putting the lap band rules into practice, so I did just that. I now weight 282 lbs. down from 297 lbs. I went in on May 4, 2009 at 9:00 AM to meet with the Dr. have blood work done, X-ray and meet anesthesiologist. I was so Nervous! I am on my way to a better life and God willing a step closer to becoming a Mommy! My surgery is scheduled for May 21, 09 at 10:00 Am. I will arrive at 8:00 Am and look forward to being health and safe through out the surgery! I will continue to pray for myself and others. I hope you all reading this will do the same!
  21. You know her better than we do. It is probably best to tell her something but on her level. You could explain that Mommy needs to have a simple procedure done that will require her to be on a special diet for a while. As you are getting closer to the surgery, explain that Mommy will need a little time to rest after this simple procedure. You could say "you know a cool thing after I have this done is that I will start losing weight and will be able to take you and your little brother to more places and we will have more fun together." Will you have an overnight stay in the hospital or something? You might arrange for her to spend the night (or day) with a friend or relative, something that would be fun and take her mind off what you are doing. I sent my 12 year old to church camp that week (it was in June). She wasn't worried at all. I called her after the surgery and it was like "okay Mom, gotta go, see ya later." Kids are easily distracted but do pick up on our anxiety. If we are worried and in turmoil over something, they do pick up on that. Best to just let them know something just so their active imaginations don't invent some other awful thing that is going on. Let her know that you are excited to have this procedure because it will make all your lives so much better. Let her share in your excitement.

    Snapping the chain...

When an elephant is young and weak, an animal trainer ties its leg to a short wooden stake in the ground. In the beginning, the young elephant tries to escape. It struggles against the rope that holds it in place. For several days, the rope keeps rubbing the same spot on the elephant’s leg. The rope finally wears through the elephant’s tough outer skin, and cuts into the elephant’s soft pink flesh. The pain is excruciating. It’s the worst thing the animal has ever felt. The elephant soon learns that pulling and struggling against the rope will only bring him pain, so he doesn’t struggle anymore. The elephant grows to be a 12,000 pound monster-sized animal. It could physically crush the animal trainer like a small bug. But it doesn’t. The animal trainer still keeps it tied up. To the same short wooden stake. If the elephant tried, it could snap the wooden stake in half by simply shifting its weight. But it doesn’t. It doesn’t think it can break free of the stake because of the early experiences it had trying to break free. It thinks the outcome will be pain, instead of freedom. Isn't food just like that little stake? Something that has caused us so much pain and failure? Something that has held us back from so much? I am finding that the "mental" part of this "breaking free" is the key for me.

    Feeling great

:thumbup:well, I am 9 days post op and feel a little better every day. I still get tired easy but no pain, no problems. I am 20.5 pounds down, that includes pre surgery diet and after the band combined. I can tell any one who is about to do this, it is such a breeze compared to what i expected. I feel so blessed. I would still love to eat lots of good stuff but I can already look at my face and tell the weighyt is coming off and it is so worth it. A very dear friend of mine recently said "nothing tastes as good as skinny will feel" I think that will be my new motto. I have started eating a few soft foods, no problems. Just cheese soup stuff, all is well. I have tons more to lose and I am afraid I will start getting discouraged when the weight loss slows way down but I am going to try and start walking every day and keep the momentum going. I wish I knew people locally who have this band too. I was so absolutely terrified and even just a few days out I know I am going to be so thankful for this chance to change my life, God bless to all.
  24. You can do it. Trust me. I seen my Dr and when I seen him in December he told me I had gained 15lbs since I last see him last year well He gave me till Janurey 3rd to lose 5 to 10 pounds and I didn't think I could because of Christmas and New Year's it felt impossible so after Christmas I cut out soda to start and store eating sweets when I went to see him I lost 10lbs and since I started my liquid diet 10 days ago I have lost an additional 15 lbs and I am completely shocked. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I have my Surgery Tuesday and I am beyond excited to see how much I have lost. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
