Now I know there's a "What to bring to the hospital list" but what about for the surgery over all? I am a list fanatic, but I think this could be AMAZINGLY helpful. To start it off, I'd imagine things like -scale -food scale -Measuring cups/spoons (if you're like me with #s rubbed off or missing a few!) -Personal blender/processor eg Magic Bullet -A good shaker (FYI smart shake is AMAZING. Cheap, and has a carabiner, 4x pill container, and a powder holder. Can be used without extra containers or with and is no bigger than a regular shaker or compartments can be used for jewelry/fruit/yogurt/etc. Dishwasher safe/Microwave safe + BPA free! AND 10$ for the 20oz!!) What else??

Room For Veggies/full Feeling Down The Road
bnorms posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 weeks out. I keep reading over and over "eat Protein then veggies". I'm sorry but its a struggle just to get the protein in! Absolutely no room for veggies. I'm guessing/hoping this will change over time? I'm worried I'm not eating very healthy. I do take a Vitamin. I have a 30g Protein shake for Breakfast and then try to get the rest of my protein in by eating greek yogurt, string cheese, chicken, sliced turkey, or fish throughout the day. Is that okay? My doctors info discusses fruits/veggies/small amount of grains but there is barely enough room for the protein! I feel content as it is....I just worry about not eating anything but protein type foods. :-/ One more question....for those of you who are a lot further out, does the "normal" feeling of being full eventually return? Right now, I only know I'm full because either I get the hiccups or chest tightness.....not the "thanksgiving full" feeling I had expected to feel. I don't know if it has something to do with the nerves being disturbed during the surgery or what. I'm just curious if I will ever get that standard full feeling I used to get. (and yes, I know we should only be eating until satisfied! I am just wondering!) -
Straight up? I wasn't. In fact I think this week is the first time I actually made the protein goal (70 gm per my plan). I was 6 weeks yesterday. Around 2wks post-op I think I was maxing out between 20 & 40gm per day of protein, and about 40 oz of Fluid (including protein drinks). At 2 weeks I still had about 1 or 2 tbl capacity. I still do, but mostly in the evening. I can eat more in the mornings. All I really wanted was ice Water, I made myself do everything else. What worked the best - hummus, refried Beans, black beans pureed with hot sauce and sour cream, fish chowder I made & boiled the fish until it almost disintegrated... tuna (I like it with white beans, mayo, red onion which I omitted, vinegar, and rosemary which I also omitted). I ate a lot of Lebaneh which I thinned with lowfat Greek yogurt cut with FF milk. Tried to eat Greek yogurt but it was (and still is) just too darn thick, fills me up way too fast. Soy bean hummus, cottage cheese... but really no more than 2 tbl of any of that at a time, and the 2 tbl could've taken 30 - 45 mins. Honestly, I just didn't worry about it that soon post-op. I could only do what I could do. I was having to make choices like, "Hmm, protein or Vitamin? Because either one will fill me up for 2 hours." So I focused on doing my best with hydration #1, protein #2.

It will get better. To get enough protein in, I would add a scoop or two of Beneprotein (purchased on-line or some Walgreens have it) and a little soy mild to my Premier chocolate protein shakes (purchased at Costco). I also added Beneprotein to soups (smooth soups), but Beneprotein will curdle if it gets too hot so you have to let your soup cool a bit then add it. I also went to the asian market and got the super super soft tofu (I think it is a fresh pudding-like tofu that comes with a little sweet ginger syrup). Heat that up and enjoy. I love this, but, I also really like tofu. I'm also lucky to live in the San Francisco Bay Area where there are lots of asian markets and it is possible to get fresh soft tofu. I couldn't handle yogurt much. Whatever you do, just eat/drink as much protein as you can. You can always do 2-4 ozs as often as possible throughout the day. Anyway, that is my two cents. Congrats! You are doing GREAT!

I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you about the Protein. You want to be sure to get that, for one thing you don't want your hair falling out, but it really helps with the hunger. I drink a lot of Atkins ready to drink, and I also have Body Fortress powder from Walmart to mix my own. The broth I drank was from unjury.com, mixes well and tastes yummy and 20gram of protein per cup! Right now you're in the healing stage so don't worry or focus too much on the weight loss. My doctor also allowed greek yogurt, runny cream of wheat, and surgar free pudding. Remember work to get a minmum of 60 gram and aim for 100 gr of protein a day. Everyone is so different but I found that where I use to go daily I now only go every other day. There's just not enough food going through our system like before. Your system will adjust before long, Enjoy not being constipated! lol. If I haven't gone by the end of the second day I take a teaspon of MOM. Hang in there....enjoy the journey and good luck to you! Hi Nicky pudding and yogurt are not cheats, not at 3 weeks out as far as I know. So you are doing fine. Those are considered full liquids. Are you on any kind of acid reducer? This might be the reason your stomach feels hungry. I take Omeprazole daily, even this far out from surgery. I have tried to stop taking it but my acid is still there. It is what it is! I just deal with it, it sure is a lot better than still being close to 300 Lbs. One last thing, perhaps give your surgeon's office a phone call and ask if he has an alternate eating plan. Some people really do heal faster than others and usually the dietician or the surgeon will allow patients to move through the stages a little faster. Good luck!!

Hungry Every 2-3 Hours
Tricia39 replied to Tricia39's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I get 69 grams of protein with my shakes and another 18 from yogurt. My doc said 2 days clears, 2 days liquids and then soft, the nutritionist said the same thing. And when I look at how much I'm eating the size of a small jar of baby food maybe it's not enough ****DIVALICIOUS**** -

Mushies
Heathermarie0407 replied to beautifulnikki's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cottage cheese is a very textured mushie, maybe try thin mashed potatoes or yogurt first. Also make sure your taking small bites and waiting between bites -
So, I was banded Monday and have been doing Clear liquids since. Tomorrow I can move to full liquids: Protein shakes, cream of whatever strained, yogurt. What was on your full liquid diet?

I don't know if you can do it but my girlfriends turned me on to 2 scoops whey, 11/2 tbls peanut butter, 8oz skim milk, greek yogurt. I can stomach this. It tastes like butterscotch. One of them use frozen fruit as well and the other uses a banana. It might not sound good but it is very good. Hope you can use and stomach. Please pass on. -

Sooooooo it was a better day. I called the clinic and they informed me that I should be on a 3+1 3 meal replacements +1 meal 100 cal snacks in between including 1 fruit serving and one other snack (protein bar, yogurt, jello) and a sensible balanced meal which include a protein, unlimited veggies and a whole grain. I concluded my evening with boston market kids meal with 2 veggie sides and i feel great. I can definitely do this. I couldve had a regular meal but knew I would be satisfied with that.

Yay! Mushy Food Here I Come!
raven8888 replied to raven8888's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I get a chance I want to scan in the diet and how my NUT is showing us tricks to sneak in as much protien per meal. Great ideas she has. She also gave us a couple pages of recipes to try. I was able to eat thier bariatric suppliment, white cheddar cheese chips, today (with the strict rule to chew it down to apple sauce) But it was such a great feeling to chew and feel something crunchy. It's a small bag only 1.5 oz and I could only eat half. I finally feel that "real" full feeling and I am totally satisfied. Now it is a matter of getting the most bank for my buck so to speak with protien. She has us adding 1/4 cup of non-fat powdered milk to anything we can fit it into as well as skim or soy milk, which gives any shake, soup, smoothie, mashed potatoes, etc an extra 12 grams of protien for the dry milk and 8grams from skim milk, and even a scoop of unflavored protien, greek yogurt etc. So basicly if you use one cup of skim milk and 1/4 cup of dry powder milk and mix with a scoop of nectar protien powder lets say and fruit you can get a smoothie at 43 grams of protien! That is just one example, I'm kind of getting my crunchy fix out of the way first today and maybe tonight try a noodleless lasagna!!! yay!! Time to get creative, so many more options with meat, fruit, starches, and veggies now. . -
Pain And Nausea 11 Weeks Out
WillowsKnot replied to Mews's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am starting to have a lot of problems with food. I was doing ok with tuna and chicken mixed with mayo, but today, I could hardly choak it down I chew slowely and a lot. I eat slowly and still it feels like a brick in my sleeve. It did not used to feel that way. I don't feel it backing up or not making it into my sleeve, just once it is there, brick city. It seems like almost everything I eat makes me feel a bit ill. I am going back to jell-o, popsicles and Soup for a few days. Maybe something upset my sleeve and it just needs a rest. I don't know, but I know this is not working, so time for a change. I have been feeing tired and weak also. I take a ppi two to three times a day, use dairy ease pills when I eat any dairy, take my Vitamins and added B-12, Calcium, etc. Maybe I will try some yogurt tonight and see how that goes down. I am in my 7th week from surgery. -
2 Weeks Post Op And Having A Hard Time W/ Soft Foods
Newfoundlove replied to peacelovenkarma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you like cottage cheese? That is my go to food. I started out with a quarter cup and chewed it, even though it was small curd. I use salt and pepper and a small amount of chopped ripe avocado. Cottage cheese has lots of protein too, even with 1% milkfat. Chobani Greek Yogurt with fruit was allowed on my soft diet too lots of protein too Get nonfat at the start a quarter cup went down fine I was on soft foods after two weeks too, I just took it slow. Some people have a hard time with ground meats in sauce and chicken, even in chicken salad. Do you like other types of fish, like Tilapia? There are great recipes out there for Tilapia on myrecipes.com. Just know you'll probably only be able to eat a quarter cup to a third cup at a time to start. All fish and shellfish, including shrimp, cooked is considered soft food at least in my NUT's plan.
