I had hernia repair at same time as VSG. I did have GERD before surgery and was on 1 Omeraprazole a day. At my 1 week check-up my surgeon increased my dosage to 2 per day because I was having a lot of stomach acid causing me to have foaming saliva and I was having stomach spasms. I stopped using Protein drinks and powders containing artificial sugar and I stopped eating foods (yogurt, Jello, popsicles, etc.) with artificial sugars and the frothy, foamy saliva problem went away and my stomach feels a lot better. I am not sure if it's because of the increased dose of Omeraprazole or not. Anyway, she wants me to take the increased dose for 3 months and then she will re-evaluate me. I have no pain at all from the surgery.

I was taught not to focus on calories, even now six months later. The real focus absolutely must be hitting your Protein goals, getting 64 oz. of liquid and taking all prescribed Vitamins. If you do that, your body will heal and you won't go into starvation mode. I use myfitness pal to track everything I put in my body and it keeps me accountable. It also let's me know if I hit my protein goals, if I am using too much fat in my diet to do it. I follow the rules around only good carbs (vegies, fruit). If you eat two bites of protein for every one bite of vegies or fruit you will easily hit your goals. Also, as the swelling goes down in your tummy you will be able to eat a little more. The most I can eat is about 3/4 cup. And that depends on whether or not it is meat or yogurt. I can eat a bit more softer foods. The thing is, the protein keeps me fuller longer. I end up eating about 1000 a 1100 calories a day. I only know this because Myfitnesspal tracks the calories for me. I do still drink 1 30gram Protein shake every morning. I use Premier Protein and it seems to give me good energy.

Hi fellow friends, So I'm 11weeks today , 56 pounds down! Awesome right?! Well, I'm concerned. I'm not eating properly , not taking vitamins, and I'm disgusted with the protein shakes. I do eat lentil and split pea soup every day for lunch, I can each Mash potatoes , chicken, Greek yogurt and sf jello and that's about it! How sad. Eggs and tuna didn't sit well. What suggestions do you have for me as car as to wha I should be eating at this opino. I feel great, but I know I'm not getting in all my nutrients. Thanks buddies

It sounds like you have some lactose intolerance in you. Whey Protein is generally the best absorbed protein for us, which is why it is preferred in most plans. Try to find one that is 100% whey isolate which has the lactose filtered out as part of the isolate process; it is more expensive which is why many products use blends of isolate and cheaper whey blends. There are also a few products out there that use egg protein which is supposed to be similar in absorption. You can also try using Lactaid tablets when dairy is unavoidable. As a side note, the greek yogurt that is a high protein staple for most WLS folks has most, if not all, of the lactose fermented out so is usually well tolerated. Usually, the idea of the pre-op diet for those docs who require them is to improve the condition of the liver prior to surgery, which primarily involves cutting the carbs way back, so the fruit would most likely be a no-no, but the small amount of fats in most of the recommended products would be OK. Why some docs require liquids only while others go with a more straightforward low carb diet pre-op is a mystery; I've never found a particularly good answer for that (my doc didn't require any of that so I never paid much attention to it when I was pre-op.)

Not losing anything? ?
BLERDgirl replied to tnf0920's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It it's actually quite easy to get in 60+gm of Protein and 64 ounces of water. most of us to that and more. You do have to work up to it. I think it took me about 1 - 2 weeks. How? By combining the 2. I made me Protein drinks with water instead of milk and I used loads of ice. I also made sure to get in the bulk of my protein by lunch. This meant I had the time between lunch and dinner to drink water. Additionally it's fluids, not water. So if I had a Protein Drink for Breakfast I made it with protein powder/greek yogurt & water. That comes in at between 30-38 gms of protein and it's about 15 ounces of fluids. Lunch could be yogurt with a bit of Protein powder, again another 30gm protein. I wait and then start on water. I have several hours to just sip water. I always carry a water bottle around so that's not a big deal. By dinner I've already met the minimum protein requirement. My water bottle is 20 ounces. Typically I can drink 2 full bottle before dinner and still have time to spare . Add the 15 from the morning shake to the 40 in the water bottle and that gives you 55. Drink another half a bottle after dinner and you've more than hit your Fluid goal. But here's the other reason why it's important to hit that protein goal. Your body needs it. It needs it to help you stomach heal and it's part of the process to help you lose weight. Without it your body holds onto every calorie it can. Additionally it may start to leech protein from other areas like your nails & hair. Then you have to worry about hair loss. Like I said you don't reach those goals right away, but you should try to work up to it. I guarantee you it won't stretch your stomach. -
reactive hypoglycemia (reoccurring low blood sugar)
Healthy_life2 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here is an web site on bariatrics and reactive hypoglycemia (reoccurring low blood sugar) http://pamtremble.blogspot.com/2010/10/reactive-hypoglycemia-after-bariatric.html. Since I have lost the majority of my weight. My blood sugars have been hitting mind numbing lows in the 50's. I found some resources that have information on diet to manage blood sugar levels. Examples of meals and snacks that work well for stabilizing blood sugar include: lowfat cheese and whole grain crackers slice of whole grain toast with peanut butter sandwich made with whole grain bread fat free plain Greek yogurt with a small piece of fruit or 1/2 cup berries large salad with abundant veggies and a source of protein (chicken, tuna, beans, egg) Keeping a food and lifestyle diary may help you determine which foods and other factors lead up to a blood sugar crash. First and foremost, you want to follow a diet designed to regulate your blood sugar level. This generally includes eating small, frequent meals spaced evenly throughout the day, such as every 2-3 hours. Meals should consist of moderate portions of high-fiber whole grains (such as 100% whole grain cereal or bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, sweet potato), some lean protein (such as turkey, ham, fish, egg, beans, lowfat yogurt or cheese), and healthy fat (such as nuts, nut butters, olive oil, avocado). Sugars, especially in the form of beverages (juice, soda, etc.) and sweets (candy, jelly, table sugar, syrup, honey, cookies, cakes), should be avoided as much as possible, as they stimulate the pancreas the most because the sugar rushes into your bloodstream rapidly. Starchy carbohydrates digest down into sugar as well, so it is important to eat these in moderate amounts Starchy carbohydrates digest down into sugar as well, so it is important to eat these in moderate amounts (such as 1/2-1 cup), and choose whole grains over refined flours. White pasta, rices, breads, and cereals are more or less guaranteed to make you feel lousy after eating them as they are digested quickly and raise insulin levels. Fruits also need to be consumed in small amounts, as they contain the natural sugar, fructose, and are best consumed with a source of protein, such as cottage cheese or nuts. Even though fruits are an excellent source of fiber, the sugar content is enough to cause your pancreas to over-react if eaten on an empty stomach. The goal is essentially to not eat carbohydrate foods without including a source of protein or fat at the same time. Proteins and fat help stabilize blood sugars by making the carbohydrate digest more slowly, as proteins and fats take longer to digest and do not convert into significant amounts of sugar. Strenuous exercise burns sugar out of your muscles and bloodstream quickly, so you may be more prone to low blood sugar during extended periods of activity as well. Eating a snack contain a small amount of carbohydrate and protein (such as yogurt or trail mix) within 1 hour of strenuous activity may be enough to keep you going strong. Developing a habit of eating small, frequent meals and taking healthy foods with you for work, school, and when on-the-go, is your best weapon against suffering the symptoms of low blood sugar. If you find incorporating the above suggestions is still not improving your symptoms, you may need to sit down with a dietitian to develop a personalized meal plan to meet your schedule, food preferences, and overall lifestyle needs. Contact your dietician for more information. There is no point in living day-in and day-out with symptoms of hypoglycemia when there is a common sense way to tackle the issue and regain your quality of life! -
I had my first one today. It had pb and bananas nonfat yogurt and whey protein (who knew???). I asked for Splenda instead of sugar. I googled the nutrition. 32 grms protein! I could only get half down which I found surprising because it's fluid. Oh it's so so good. I heard they were expensive but for $5 24 oz is a lot.

It sounds like your husband may have been using food as an emotional reward before surgery. Many people do. They enjoy it for reasons other than hunger. It often brings us comfort, pleasure, and helps us cope. Now that your hubby has had the surgery he will have to find new ways to achieve those things such as taking a walk, snuggling with you, petting an animal, rocking out to his favorite music, reading, sitting on the deck, whatever makes him happy! He can learn to enjoy smaller food treats as well... My favorite right now in the evenings is a little Greek yogurt mixed with toasted coconut pieces, walnuts, and strawberries. It's a pretty fab desert! Eating out was really hard for me at first too, so I can really relate to that. I missed so much looking over the menu and pigging out on something delicious with my hubby or friends. With my new tummy, my choices were so limited and when I did order, I could only take a few bites so would be done in a few minutes just sitting watching everyone eat. But gradually I learned a few tricks and your hubby will too.... He'll learn to think about not just what he wants to order to eat right now, but what he wants for lunch tomorrow too (because there's always leftovers). And that makes it kind of fun. He'll learn to not dive right in when his food arrives and to pace himself so he can enjoy eating with everyone the whole length of the meal. And he'll learn to save a little room for a bite of your desert! He's really blessed to have you. Just by being on this site and posting out of concern for him, you are obviously dedicated to supporting him. God bless and good luck with this journey.

3 week liquid diet post op
kcadoret replied to kamcar616's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been eating Greek yogurt and cottage cheese for two days. Today I tried a scrambled egg after some debate (my list of allowable food says scrambled eggs, and does not mention needing to purée them further). I took small bites and chewed carefully, so far so good! As you mentioned @@Djmohr pureeing things like meat and even vegetables sounds like a no win situation. Reading the details of my diet it sounds like once I'm able to eat 1/2 cup of food for each of my 5 'meals' I can move onto adding soft foods 1-2 tbsp at at time! I don't want to rush anything but at the time time I'm only eating 3 foods so I don't see this purée stage lasting longer than this weekend. -
3 week liquid diet post op
kamcar616 replied to kamcar616's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cottage cheese and yogurt i m thinking will get me through as well. The sound of pureed chicken beef, etc. Just sounds nasty. I'm having a hard time with my soups. I have to dilute everything and can't get past the awful taste, and my go to flavored crystal lite is just way too sweet. I crave ice cold water, the Popsicles have been helping with that a bit. -
3 week liquid diet post op
Djmohr replied to kamcar616's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pureed stage for me was not a good one because of the texture issue. I ended up ruining eggs for me probably forever. I used to love them but I pureed them to make a little egg salad during that phase. I ended up getting sick from the texture and smell. I am now 6 months post op and have tried eggs many different ways and I cannot get past it. Ugh! For me, I ended up living on cottage cheese, yogurt and Protein shakes during that phase. I wish I could share better news. I did try pureeing all kinds of things like chicken, turkey, beef and using different sauces but could not get past the texture. Good luck to you! -

Difficult getting enough calories in
SaraJay425 replied to tripletsmom3's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My first week I didn't want anything. Lol the second week I struggled bc I was so head hungry. I just started the puree diet. Bariatric advantage has a vegetable soup powder and it's great I added some seasoning to it but you mix it with water and that's how I survived the last week before puréed foods. I couldn't do yogurt and was so sick of jello and pudding. My doctor told me it's almost impossible To get down the 60 g of protein the first couple weeks. I am now doing better. Also bariatric advantage has protein shakes. The orange taste like an orange cream sickle the iced latte taste like a real coffee. I didn't find these until my 2nd week and wish I knew from the start. Also vitamin shoppe and GNC has isopure. Flavored liquid protein. I add crystal light packet to it but it's not bad at all. -

Nutrition/diet/dumping syndrome?
SandyS replied to ilikecake2much's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For me post op life is nothing what I expected. I no longer crave anything and I'm never hungry. I set timers on my phone when it is time for me to eat. I still cook and get takeout for my family but I don't eat it. I have my own food either protein shakes, yogurt, or other high protein food. To be completely honest when I see people eating junk food and a lot of it I get nauseous. Food is the last thing I think about. I'm four months post op and had RNY. I'm not sure if other people feel the same as me but sitting around eating pizza and junk is not appealing. Plus with my pouch the size of a golf ball I could not fit a ton of food in there. I also have not experienced dumping. Best of luck to you during your journey! -
Im experiencing the same thing. Im still on liquids so I dont know If that makes the difference but I can't tell when Im full. I always feel like I can keep going but I usually stop becuse Im scared and in my mind I know Im doing too much. I never felt any neausea or pain from overeating, but I did feel a little unconfortable after a yogurt smoothie once. I think its because I drank it too fast becuase the feeling went away after a few min.

Frozen chocolate Power pudding Pops You can make these with any flavor of Jello pudding. Just adjust the flavor of Protein powder and Torani syrup accordingly. 1 oz box Jello sugar free/fat free chocolate fudge pudding (box that makes 4x0.5 cups) 1/2 cup cottage cheese or greek yogurt (low fat or non-fat) 1/4-1/2 scoop chocolate Protein Powder. I use Body Fortress brand. 1.5 cups unsweetened almond milk (vanilla or regular) (Optional) 1-2 teaspoons fiber powder (clear like Benefiber) (Optional) 1/2 teaspoon sugar free Torani syrup like S'Mores, Chocolate Macadamia Nut, or Caramel Silicone candy mold. I got two of these from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4UZLKE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Blend all ingredients together in a small bowl or large cup. I use a stick/immersion blender so that the cottage cheese blends well. Blend for about two minutes until stiff. Spoon into silicone candy molds. Freeze for about 3 hours minimum. They are a bit messy and melt on your fingers, but very yummy!

Eating Disorder Developing After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gladys62 replied to CT Fats's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I am reading it sounds like there is a chance to eat after gastric sleeve? I have eaten 1 Greek yogurt, 1/2 a rotisserie chicken THIGH, two crackers (for nausea), and 1/4 of a Protein shake since Monday (this is Thursday). I am doing fair on fluids since I have been hospitalized for dehydration since my surgery 3 months ago. I have gotten to the point that I DESPISE eating because it hurts! Either heart burn (and stomach burn) or pain in my left side near my waist. My bariatric said this is normal and gave me Carafate. Long story short, will I be able to eat again somewhat normal? Why are some of you worried about gaining weight back is why I am asking? I wouldn't be able to tolerate a feeding tube because the pain is in my stomach. I need hope that I may be able to eat something someday. Please tell me that it true! -
I probably already know the answer to this question, as it wasn't listed as an example of things I can have on my diet. But, there were only suggestions listed. Does anybody else know if cheese, preferably weight watchers jalapeno' string cheese, is allowed on your pre-op? I'm supposed to be eating creamy Soups, yogurt, Jello, broths, etc. Just curious if anyone ate cheese! LOL

A'sgotthis posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, I had surgery on 3/17 and lost right away, as expected (I believe)....... but I have not lost even 0.1 since 3/27. I am on a blended/pureed diet for the first 30 days post surgery. 6, 2 oz meals per day.....yogurt, refried Beans, Protein shakes, etc. Nothing solid. I am walking about 2 miles per day and get b/w 50-64 oz Water per day (Doc says minimum of 32.) Anyone else stall THIS early? I'm feeling so anxious about it it's making me crazy. -

Annoying little rant
beachgurl84 replied to Okinawa girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Waiting is one of the hardest parts. Seems like we're always waiting on something. But you can use this time to do your own research and formulate questions for your NUT when you get the consult. Make grocery list, learn to log your food (I recommend myfitnesspal.com), start looking up recipes. Find alternatives for foods like Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Use this time to prepare yourself and it will help the time fly by. -

March 2015 Surgery!
highdesertblue replied to Starsun100's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery was Mar. 18. I had an open revision, so I have an incision. The surgeon used adhesive instead of staples, so it is uncomfortable, but not as bad as staples. I've had other surgeries, first time without staples! I actually feel very good. My first followup appointment is next week. I did have a "why on Earth did I do this?" day 5 days after surgery. I was a crying mess. I hadn't slept well since the surgery, partly because I had a low grade fever, and was getting chills and sweats. Oh, and I was in pain! I take anxiety meds , so I took an anxiety pill, and some liquid tylenol for the fever, and I finally slept well. The next morning I felt SO much better. I have to be on full liquids for a total of four weeks. The surgeon just recently changed that policy. It used to be two weeks, but I don't mind, because I am so afraid I will mess this up! . I just want to heal well. They said I would be sore in my upper left part of my abdomen , because that is where they cut the muscle, and it does hurt there, but only if I am up doing something. I'm alternating between Protein drinks, and yogurts, with some broth once in a while. I'm disabled, so it is painful for me to stand long enough to blend and strain Soups, but I've done it a couple of times. I had strained french onion Soup once, and it was a nice change, but the thing I microwaved it in smelled like onions for a while!!! I hope you are all feeling well. I have one more pound to lose to get into the 2s!!!!
