I just got approved this morning!!!!!!! Now what?
Julia_N replied to sandy00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! A few days after I got my approval letter, my doctor's office called me to attend a final pre-op seminar. It lasted a couple of hours. Then a few weeks later, I had my final pre-op appointment and got the last-minute instructions for going to the hospital. Since my doctor's office is adjacent to the hospital, I went over there and did a pre-registration and some last-minute pre-admission tests -- urine, blood, EKG, and a couple of chest X-rays. I didn't expect to do all the pre-admission stuff and I ended up spending most of a day there, instead of the time it usually takes for an appointment. Glad I was able to do that instead of at 5:30 a.m., which is my report time. Good luck! -
Day 4 post op, couple simple questions
MrsKarenC2008 replied to Angry Banana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@rking I take pills regularly for arthritis pain ... first 6 weeks I had to crush them ... I would mix with a tiny bit of Water and drink it fast ... tasted like crap ... but then after the 6 week mark .. doc cleared me to take them whole ... which freaked me out ... so now I break in half and take half at a time ... seems not to upset any of the delicate workings in there! I just had to make sure before surgery that the pain doc could give me something crushable ... which was no trouble at all ... Good luck to you!! -
Hello everyone! I am glad to have found this website. Me and my close friend are preparing ourselves for the lap band. We have done our research and just patiently waiting for my approval from the insurance company. I have Aetna PPO. I have heard so many things about Aetna and their waiting procedures. It would be helpful if anyone can give me insight on how long do you usually wait for the precertification. My surgeon is going to be Dr. Bessler. I am just counting down the seconds, minutes, hour etc:smile2:. Your help will be greatly appreciated! p.s. Does Optifast spoil if not use? My nutritionist encouraged me to buy it in the beginning because i have alot of weight to loose. I am kind of mad at myself because i should of researched into it more and waited until i was close to pre-op. I have three unused boxes and was curious to know, will they still be good by the time i do my pre-op? Thanks again.

Able to Eat Almost Anything
jevinity333 replied to Kathy L's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i too am able to eat what i want. I had the RNY and I haven't experienced any complications. I had a friend who got sleeved two weeks behind me, and she is having trouble drinking anything. She says it hurts. I feel blessed to be able to eat whatever, but it does take me choosing to change my diet for optimal success. I know people who have had the gastric bypass and eat what ever they want. They lost weight, but probably not to the extent they could have. I want a different life, so I will have to make changes, but I do take it as a blessing. I don't want to experience the pain I see my friend going through. Counting my blessings... -
Have Stopped losing
2BtinyinTN replied to susie1732's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Susie1732- I am 3 weeks out and haven't lost anything in a week 1/2. I too exercise and eat about 600 calories a day. I don't get it! -
I do water aerobics for an hour a week. It's a good work out, but I do it in addition to walking, weight lifting, Zumba and other things. It's good on a "cool down" day.

Hi All, I was watching Extreme Makeover Weight Loss the other night. It was with a man named James who had 250lbs to lose. He had been doing water areobics and the host Chris Powell pretty much poopooed it implying that it did not offer enough resistance and would not get him anywhere. I always thought water aerobics was a good form of exercise. A friend who does it an hour three times a week told me that she is suppose to be burning 500 calories an hour. How can that not be good?
-
I think what the host was saying it was not going to get the many anywhere as far as the rapid weight loss the show likes to imply. i applaud the guy for getting out there, in the Water and just moving at his size. The water aerobics and willing to keep moving is probably what kept him mobile at that point in his life. It is great for burning calories and improving flexibility, but I have to agree for the rapid weight loss they have on the show it would not produce the desired result. With that said, if you are not out there exercising this is a great starting point! I was surprised to find it way to easy for me at my current fitness level, but I enjoy it and still go every other week when I take a break from toning.

I was banded four days ago and have been reading the posts for the past two days. My doctor only suggested a low carb diet the week prior to surgery. A liquid diet for 48 hr. then soft foods. I had a scrambled egg for breakfast and Salmon tonight. I have lost 3lb. Has anyone else had such easy to follow instructions and had long term success with their band?
-
This is my 6 week anniversary with the band. Initially my BMI was 33. I quickly lost 14lb. but since my 1st fill 2 weeks ago-no loss at all. I have kept my calorie intake at 1000 cal. and I excercise everyday for 45 min. I feel great and am not hungry Should I eat less or am I eating to little.

I had heard that a lot of poeple had trouble with rice, but I ate it for dinner one evening and had no trouble with it. A week later, my mom made sushi rolls and fried rice for lunch and invited me over. I took one bit of that sushi and knew instantly that it was NOT a good idea. I kept it down but I just "knew" that I should not have anymore rice that day. So much of the banding depends on you and your circumstances. I believe that it didn't go down so well, because my band is tighter at lunch and because the rice on the sushi was cold. I seem to do better in the evening and with warm foods. Best of luck to ya.

It's been one year and 8 months since my lap band surgery and I've had one heck of a time. I am wondering if others out there feel the same way I do...I made this decision to take control of my life and my eating and I struggle with it more now than ever before. It's like all I did was accentuate my problems...does anyone else feel this way? I have had so many issues with the band...too loose, so tight that I can't eat or drink anything, too tight and I immediately throw everything up, loosened to let my stomach heal and then abandoned by my doctors (or so it felt...). I had lost about 23 pounds and felt amazing, but I couldn't keep anything down anymore, so I went in and they x rayed me and literally everything I swallowed immediately came back up. I had stopped losing weight because I wasn't digesting much at all. So they loosened it all the way and asked me to come back two weeks later....they cancelled my appointments for a variety of reasons for 3 months, and I gained everything back plus 5 pounds...I was devestated. And it's so hard to explain to non lap band people...my friends seemed almost happy when the band was completely loose because I could eat again...almost as if my small and slow eating made them uncomfortable (has anyone else ever felt this way?) and I could eat ANYTHING for three months, and I did. I've never been so mad at myself or a situation in my life...so what did I do? After they tightened the band again I taught myself how to eat VEEEERRRRY slowly, and I gained even more weight. Add to that an unexplained illness that knocked me on my butt for about 6 weeks and I'm officially heavier than I've ever been. I'm going in this Thursday for another tightening, and to tell you the truth, I'm scared. I'm at 1.5 cc right now, and 2 cc was where I got so sick and they had to loosen it. I am so afraid that I wil have it tightened and the same thing will happen all over again...but at the same time I know I need it tightened. I've finally gotten my working out back on track and I feel great from that, and I think I just need a shake up as far as the band is concerned...does that make sense? Anway, I'm rambling because its late at night and I can't sleep for the worry, and I found this site. Does anyone have any advice or had an experience at all like this? I would appreciate any feedback...thanks for reading...

I started back at the gym on day 4 slower increasing my time and incline on the treadmill. I was allowed to go back to swimming at 2 weeks.

finally giving in...getting a big haircut (4 months post-op)
JamieLogical replied to mamaofmatthew's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
That's about how much I cut off. If you look at my gallery, you can see how long my hair was in my before pictures and then how long it was a few weeks ago in my progress pictures. Those progress pictures were taken about 3 months after I cut it all off, so it had grown out some by that point. -
Hello, My name is JJ. This week I have taken the first step in getting my health together. My insurance covers weight loss surgery after 6 months of supervised dieting. Today I saw my GP and she is completely supportive of this journey, and was genuinely honest about it being a tool, not a cure all. I appreciate the honesty. I have chosen a Dr. and will attend his seminar in a few days. At that point I will fill out the paperwork and go from there. About a year ago I had a major surgery that improved my health by 75%. Since then I realize how great I can feel, and the immense pleasure of being a part of life without pain. My BMI is 41. I am 5'1" and 219lbs @ 39 yrs of age. I have thyroid disease (hypo), high triglycerides, mild sleep apnea, depression (after losing a child) and am pre-diabetic. Around 10 years ago all self-esteem issues vanished for me after the birth of our child. I finally started living life as much as possible, only being held back by pain. I buy clothes that fit, and look nice, and never agonize about what I am wearing or how it fits. I take care to look up to date, and presentable for me. I like looking nice and feeling good. My husband is FABULOUS. When we met I was around 150 and as I grew through the years his devotion and commitment to me grew even deeper. He's not a chubby chaser, but loves me and respects me. He looks like a male model still, and I have grown obese. I know I have a good, good man. My goal is to feel as great as I can, be 100% a part of life, and come off of all my meds. I am ready for this change. Thank you to everyone that is so forthcoming on this site. Just what I have read in the last few days has helped with questions and curiousness!

Plateau already???? Can't be....
MollyBrown replied to dream'n2bthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Pennie, You are doing absolutely GREAT! Don't look at this as a plateau at all. Two weeks without a weight change is when you start thinking plateau. Some folks don't lose weight or much weight during this phase so you really need to pat yourself on the back. I have been working hard and am very happy with my results and you are blowing my doors off... Also, are you exercising much yet? I am not. I really, really need to get moving, this is the only area I really need help with now. Focus on the positive, keep doing the right thing, and that scale will move... Have a Happy Thanksgiving.. -
Plateau already???? Can't be....
MollyBrown replied to dream'n2bthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have been hyper focusing on the scale too. I was changing my ticker almost everyday, except for yesterday because I didn't log on. Anyway, I hit the 20lb mark yesterday. Then, this morning the scale said I gained 1.4lbs. I was like, what the hell! Yesterday I moved for a change. I didn't "workout" but I cleaned, vacuumed, put this workout machine together (which took almost all friggin day). Up and down off the floor, so much so my port site hurt a little. Yeah, so this lesson is, I need to only weigh myself once or twice a week so I am not so devastated. Regarding the stall that we are experiencing. Maybe its not a matter of stalling, maybe its a matter of our bodies catching up on the 15+ lbs we have lost already. Let's try to collectively agree to stick with it, keep doing the right thing, send up prayers to whoever our high powers might be, and weigh only once or twice a week. -

Molly, I'm new here and I have not been banded yet, but I had to tell you that you are the most positive person, I enjoy what you are writting, I hope that you will stay close by cause I know for a fact I will need your advice. I just went too my seminar tonight 11/26, but with the office being slow right now they said it could be as soon as 3 weeks. Is that to quick. Thanks for your input. -

It's a sad sad day:think....the battery in my scale died this morning. I guess I can't feed my obsession today. There's no way I'm stepping foot in Wal-Mart today! Maybe I should take this as a sign that I need to get over my scale obsession. Anyone else get on it like 3 times a day??? I think I'm in OCD hell! LOL Molly - no I'm not doing any exercising yet. The doc said not to start any program until I'm 3 weeks out. Lizzie - I don't wanna be in bandster hell. You can have it back! OMG what's it going to be like when I start mushies.....Good grief! I'll be so glad when my metabolism catches up to all these changes. -
Banded on May 28th...One Week Post-Op Update
morto074 replied to fotogurl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hey, I was banded on the 28th too! I lost 14 lbs on the 2 week liquid diet pre-surgery and I have lost 10 lbs since surgery. So 24lbs altogether. I'm happy the numbers are going down but I really don't feel any difference in weight yet. I go in for my first post-op check up and fill next Wednesday. Thats also when I can start the pureed stage. -
Slippage, Flippage, and Discouraged :(
christiana replied to christiana's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, So I had my band taken out on 7/28 and feel so much better already! The doctor said it slipped quite a bit and made my stomach into a swervy shape which will take a couple of weeks to relax. I was on an IV for dehydration the whole time I was in the hospital (Mon-Wed) as well and my surgeon was a saint and is only charging me for the hospital fees which they told him he had to charge me! I am not really all that sad to have lost my band. I gained most of my excess weight when my boyfriend and I started dating and we went out to eat a lot and cooked big meals (As he was skin and bones when we met!) so I am hoping I can keep the weight off as I am only like 40 lbs from my goal. We shall see though. Thanks for all the good thoughts! And good luck to all of you on your journeys. -
Good to hear! I have my surgery in 3 weeks. I am nervous about how it will be for the first 6 months or so. I am on a small island just off the coast of France. I am having to travel to the uk for my op so not looking forward to the 4/5 days there on my own. Can't wait to see some results!

For those with "Last Supper Fears Syndrome"
kacee posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

For those of you who are afraid your life will come to an abrupt end after banding and that you won't be able to eat anymore... I just went downstairs to the cafeteria to see what was for lunch. My appetite kicked in when I saw the eggrolls they had and I really started salivating. Then I saw the chicken tenders and reacted the same way. I initially got two chicken tenders and one egg roll and then thought more about it and got only one tender and one egg roll. Sat down at my desk. Three bites into the eggroll everything "hit bottom" and lt me tell you, when you have good restriction and you eat slowly and you don't drink with your meal, and your food "hits bottom", you could CARE LESS if you have any more. I did finish the one eggroll but it's like my taste buds turned off or something. I took the remaining tender and tossed it, and I am FULL! The appetite can kick in for foods, but it stops pretty quick being an overwhelming force the minute you put the food in your mouth. Now if I can just convince myself that one lonely eggropll on the plate is PLENTY...and not consistently feel like I have to ADD something!
