Calling Cheri CLK and other vets!

I average 3.5 a week and was told that was way above the expected. Like hatheryomw my surgeon said 1-2 a week. I'm slowing down as I get closer to 6 months so my average may adjust.

    Four weeks post op pic

Congrats on your progress, my surgery date was 07/28 and I have hit a serious stall, no weight loss in 3 weeks and I am starting to wonder what am I doing wrong. You look amazing, got any good tips on how you are so successful?

    Multi-Vitamins

There are a ton of different options for Vitamins out there. I know for me the gummies seem to work okay and I was on them from week one on. I think the first 90/120 days I was taking half of the recommended dosage (1 gummy per day instead of 2). Now I take anywhere from 1 normal dosage up to 2 ( 2 gummies in the am and then 2 in the pm). I have gone back and forth between Men's One a Day, and Vita fusion Men's complete Multivitamin gummies. The Vita Fusion's tend to taste a bit more sweeter to me, which is due I think to the fact that they have a sugary coating on them. They are also my emergency go to vitamins whenever I forget to take my One A Days. I initially was looking at the brands that my surgeon carries in his office, but decided against them when it just came down to cost.

    Pre-op Shopping list

Don't forget a couple of water bottles. I bought two 32 oz bottles from Amazon that has ounce markings and time on it to help you sip all day. I have always bought OZARKA spring water but decided to try a water filter as tap water here is nasty, heavy chlorine. New pitcher system Aquagear from Amazon has a great filter that can last 6 months. It filters out chemicals but leaves in minerals. Am getting used to the change. Also get some good shea butter body lotion. Dry skin will certainly develop. Find one you really like. Another thing I bought was a water filter for shower. Aquabliss from Amazon has a 12 stage filter and rated best in articles I found on web. Chlorine really dries out your skin. And a hot shower can cause chlorine to vaporize into chlorine gas which can irritate respiratory system. I have had my showerhead water filter for two weeks now and notice a big difference, especially no more dry itchy scalp. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Post op Day 8

You haven't done anything wrong. I stopped losing after day 8 and then after a week I lost 2 pounds. Try to weigh yourself around the same time and just once a week. remember you weigh more in the afternoon than in the morning. Just keep concentrating on getting in your fluids and then as much protein as you can (at this stage i wasn't able to get in a lot).

Where are the diabetic type 1's

Yes, the body reacts to stress by releasing hormones that counteract the effects of insulin. It's normal, but different for all of us. I was high for a week or so immediately after surgery, then it was like I was hit with a bomb. Low blood sugars all over the place. Be aware that if you are always taking 7 units of novalog, regardless of carb intake, that will need to change because you won't be eating many carbs. (No bread, Pasta, rice, starchy veggies, crackers, etc.) I do occasionally have a high. the last time was due to a pump malfunction. Yuck. Otherwise, if it peaks after dinner/bedtime snack, I know it will plummet over night. (And it does!)

    Swimming/Baths

The Pool is the only form of exercise I get, so I asked many questions on this subject. My answer by my Surgeon was to wait until all incisions are completely healed and there are NO scabs remaining. Usually takes about 6 weeks for most, but everyone is different.
  8. I quit both a week before my surgery as I only had to do a one week pre op diet. But if you are a big caffeine drinker you might want to start weaning yourself a little sooner; just my opinion. Good luck to you!

    Rash

I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery. This morning I started developing a rash. It started on my arms, by this afternoon my legs and back are covered too. Then I started getting a headache, and I'm feeling very nauseous. I took my temperature and I have a low grade fever (99.9) I don't know if this is even anything tied to the surgery or if I just have some sort of bug. I don't want to take benedryl because I don't think I would be able to keep it down. Should I call my doc, or wait a day or two?
  10. Well, it's been a while since I posted (I've been posting on the weight specific boards), and my surgery is tomorrow May 24th @ 8:30. I am on the last day of my pre-op diet...it's been rough! Well, as I said before, I weighed 619 when I went in for my consult about a month ago. Because of the pre-op diet, I'm down to 561. I can't believe I dropped 58 lbs in 3 weeks!! Tomorrow morning is my surgery, so I would appreciate any of you saying a prayer for me. Thanks in advance! Dave

    My first stall :-(

I wouldn't consider a 1# loss a stall. Stalls are typically no losses over multiple weeks. In weeks where I lost 1#, I typically came back the following week losing 4 or so. Keep at it, it'll happen!
  12. Hey... I had the same exact worry! Besides being overweight, I'm 100% "healthy". I just got my approval yesterday!! My insurance bases it on either 40 + BMI OR less than 40 BMI but have to have I believe three Comorbities.
  13. I had the same fears, even though my surgeon's office kept assuring me that we didn't have to go looking for any co-morbidities if my BMI was over 40. The one thing I will say, is be careful during the 6-month program and the 1-2 week pre-op diet. My surgeon did warn me that if my BMI dropped below 40 on the morning of surgery, technically my approval could be reversed. I have no idea how true that is, but I can't imagine he'd go out of his way to shorten my liver-shrinking diet just to make sure I stayed above 40 if it wasn't a real concern he had.
  14. I had a follow-up appointment with my NP one week post-op. I remember feeling pretty good that day. My parents had been with my partner and me since the day before the surgery and they headed home that afternoon. The next day, I began my walking routines (outside of walking up and down the hallway in my building) and started going to the spa every day. I was still a little sore, VERY TIRED all of the time, and already pretty much over liquids, but I knew that had another 5 weeks off from work to devote to my recovery so I embraced it!

    A fresh start for me.

I've been away from the site for a few months. After my mom passed away back in October, I found myself returning to food for emotional comfort. I miss her everyday, but after 4 months of no weightloss, I've decided I need to get over it and kick things into high gear. I called my Dr.'s office because I had not seen him in like 3 months. Every appointment I had kept getting canceled and rescheduled another month and half out, so I have not been getting regular fills. Up until 4 weeks ago. I called the clinic and asked if they could see me and give me a fill. The doc there said I should have already been to the halfway point of my band being filled and was adament that she was going to get me caught up and back on track. She gave me a fill and said come back in two weeks. I was feeling slight restriction again...yay! 2 weeks later I went back and she gave me another fill...this time I felt a lot of restriction and even had a hard time with some foods, but it's a good thing! I haven't weighed myself during this time..so I'm hoping there is weight loss...I can tell there is, just not sure how much. So I have another appointment this Wednesday with the same clinic and the doc will let me know how it goes....I finally feel like I am back on track and hope to get some serious weightloss logged into my journal. Thanks for your attention and I hope everyone is doing well.

    Almost there

I got my lapband 9/22/10. I am wondering if my scale is broken. I got my last fill on June 7, my doctor felt I didn't need a fill but I told him I was very hungry at night. So he gave me .2 cc's under flourscopy. I think I have a total of 5.0 in a 10 cc band. He gave me the right amount to put me at my sweet spot. I really have to make myself eat, I don't get as hungry as I used to. The reason why I think my scale is broken is because the first week after my fill i lost 3 lbs. I went to my primary dr. and he has not seen me since i got my clearance to have the surgery. He was very happy with my weight loss. He was not happy that I had stopped taking my high blood pressure medicine and my blood pressure was high 130/100, he told me to start taking my medicine again and don't stop taking them. So that was a downer. This morning I got on the scale (I don't know why) it's friday and i usually only get on the scale on Mondays. What a surprise I lost 7 lbs. 5 more pounds and I have lost 100 lbs. Never thought I could do it. I am so pround of myself. I just need to make myself exercise more to tone up the flab. I do walk a lot. I hurt my shoulder a few months ago so that has made me stop. I have to start going to therapy, but going on vacation so will start when I return. At this rate I may be at my goal weight or close to it by 9/22/11.

    Turned away for cheating

Um... A doctor can see if their liver hasn't shrunk enough. People get turned away all the time because they can't opperate because of that. Read this thread and a majority of people know that. Optifast makes your liver shrink and if you follow the diet correctly you can't help but lose weight because you lose weight from your liver. Unless you've had some strange allergic reaction to something in Optifast, that makes you put on weight from non-existant calories and your liver then retains Water from it, I find it all very hard to believe. Maybe you need to exercise more. I don'tt hink you should put down Optifast when it helps a lot of people before surgery shrink their livers and make it easier to opperate. Telling them that a pre-op diet isn't important is ignorant and I think you're only doing this to disagree with me, once again. I also find it hard to believe that you'd stick to a very hard to follow diet for a month when you're not losing any weight. This gives me reason to believe that you've never been on Optifast and you continuously state that you have to prove me wrong from a disagreement we had 3 weeks ago. Optifast isn't just a 'diet', it's used to shrink your liver before surgery. That's why people go on those diets before surgery. Get over it. We have different opinions. You shouldn't lie in order to convince people you know what you're talking about. I also think you shouldn't lie about your weight loss in your signature - it's a little off putting to be honest.

    I am freaking out!

I too had pain after surgery but it was gone by day 4. The gas is the worst thing and walking it off is the key. Obviously no one can make the final decision but you but I am so happy with the sleeve/surgery. It is the best thing I have EVER done for myself. 9 weeks out and 52lbs down, able to move, bend over without strain, started running on treadmill and workout 4-5 days a week. I feel incredibly good now and can't really remember the pain after surgery...kinda like forgetting the pain from having a baby Good luck to you on whatever you decide.

    Emotional Eaters

I'm 7 weeks post band. My appetite is reduced and I get some restriction but not a lot. For me the restriction is more important. I'm fine at controlling my portions when I'm at home but I eat out a lot mainly for work and that's when I find it difficult. I could easily eat a 3 course meal without any problem. My consultant is reluctant to tighten my band much more than it is. I've had 3 fills and am now at 5mls. He thinks it's good that I can eat out without difficulty but I fell I need that restriction so I feel there is a safety net and a reminder to stop eating! I weighed myself this morning and I had gained a pound, so as an emotional eater that sent me downward into negative thinking, followed by anxiety and naturally chaotic eating. This again is why I need the restriction. I almost need that form of a slap around the face if you know what I mean. I'd really like to hear thoughts from any other emotional eaters with a band and how they are coping with their journey.

    Favorite "fast foods" redux

Chick Filet grilled nuggets. $3 Wendy's Junior Bacon Cheeseburger no bun. $2 A HUGE favorite -- Chipotle bowl, no rice, double Beans, meat, cheese, extra sour cream, all the salsas. Easily 3-4 meals. $8 If I can't take it home -- Chipotle Kid's Taco. No rice, no shells, double beans. You get the meat, the beans, the toppings, a small drink and a bag of chips to give the kids. Still more than I can eat. $4 Any grocery. lunch meat counter. Two or three slices of meat and cheese. They look at you weird, but I'm ok with that. As I am getting so little, I get the good stuff -- Boar's Head in my area. $2 -$3 costco or Sam's. Hot dog. No bun, all the toppings. $1 Or the gigantic pizza slices. Toppings only. $2 Noodles and Company. Caesar side salad with Parmesan chicken add on. $3 One of my summer favorites.

    I'm sooooooooooo hungry!!

Anca, I can NOT believe he filled you at 2 1/2 weeks post op! The ONLY thing that helped MY hunger was a small mcdonalds shake. Not protien shakes - only the mcd's! Id have one a day. Before I started having this daily, I was doing some serious cussing... b/c ALL my tummy did was growl! Like Ive said before, mcd's shakes are made with yogurt, not just plain ice cream. It may be a mental thing, but they sure helped me!
  22. :hungry: OK bandsters...help me out. I am 15 days out (still on mushies) and I can't seem to get enough food in me to stay satisfied for more than 2 or 3 hours. I know that once I get my fill I will stay satisfied longer but this is driving me nuts!! I want to keep my caloric intake down to 1200 but I'm not doing a very good job of it right now. I lost 10 lbs the first week on liquids but I don't think I've lost anything since then, because I eat so often. Is it possible that my doc would do my first fill before the 4 weeks is up? Does anybody have any suggestions for mushies that stay with you longer??? Thanks

    I'm sooooooooooo hungry!!

Sorry - I just have to respond to some things that were said in previous posts. I would be really concerned about a bariatric surgeon who claims you will lose 30 pounds in the first month following Lap-Band surgery. If they are, they shouldn't be doing this surgery because they don't understand the band. Doctors place the band with no saline in it, let the stomach heal for 6 weeks, *then* will make adjustments. Since there is no restriction for the first six weeks, once the swelling goes down in stoma, there is no reason to believe you will not still feel hungry, because it's almost as if the band isn't there. I'm glad some of you are able to eat solid food so early, but you're taking your chances with problems further down the road. Also, the Lap-Band has always been an *adjustable gastric band*, meaning even when it was first introduced in Europe, it was adjustable. There is a previous surgery that is still sometimes done called vertical banded gastroplasty. Here's a picture: Uh ... sorry about the naked chick up there, I could have done without her but that's the only good picture of the surgery I found in a quick google search of VBG. But yeah, there's a band there, but there's lots of staples and you get a circle in your stomach. You can see they really screw up your stomach and the plastic band is not adjustable in any way. This is *not* the Lap-Band. Sorry for running off at the mouth like this, but I started researching bariatric surgery in 2001, have known about the Lap-Band from before it was even approved in the United States, and just want to make sure people get the facts correct. Thanks.

    things to never do...

Sorry, I haven't gotten my band yet and I will be done teaching for the year when I do. Unfortunately, teaching is my 2nd job so I will still need to go back to my day job. I'm hoping to go back in a week or less. I'm not sure if they are going to let me use sick leave - because this is elective surgery - and I don't want to kill all of my vacation. Good luck when you return to teaching. I'm guessing that you will get tired quicker. Try and schedule some cat nap times.
