    New to process and torn

I'm still in the pre-cert process, finished my 3 month waiting period. But for a revision for a RNY done 25 years ago. I've tried and failed even with the surgery so for me really needed to do something more than just going it on my own. I did my psych eval with a licensed therapist who was in network for my insurance provider who specializes in eating disorders-- the gamut, not just for folks who are overweight. I decided to continue therapy with her-- to address eating disorder issues and what I believe to be some mild depression (most likely tied to the weight, maybe). I've never gone to counseling or therapy before besides the stuff you might get with weight loss programs. We've been meeting weekly thus far. No magic bullets, still feel like we're in the getting to know you phase. She eventually suggested meeting with a bariatrician in the health system who prescribes weight loss medications, she felt like they would be a useful adjunct to my effort to try to lose weight (and keep it off if I get there) whether my surgery is approved or not. I did that and just started those this week. The bariatrician had a list of meds and we talked through the mechanism of action and which might be the best for my eating triggers/issues, she also provided a list of dietary changes, exercise plan, etc. I'll continue to meet with her for tracking. She said average/best loss with meds is 10% so doesn't get me close to where I want, but could help. She has a lot of patients who had WLS who she follows and use meds-- some til they get to goal weigh and some who have stayed on them longer term. ALL of that say I encourage you to continue exploring those other avenues and perhaps consider what other formal supports you might be able to identify (licensed counseling, support groups for accountability, etc.) that you haven't yet tried to help you be as successful as you can.
  2. Thanks, Mis. No, no revision for me. I"m ready to do this by myself. Or not. I just want to feel better. I know my general health would be better with another 40 lb weight loss, but i'll either do it or I won't. I hope I will, but I'm just looking to feel better. this really sucks.
  3. Best wishes my friend! I have to say reflux free life is awesome!!!! Not waking at night choking or with my sinus cavities on fire is a great great thing . And for me it's apples and celery......they are heaven, pure heaven. Good luck, I hope you heal quickly and are a huge success with weight loss on your own. I'm now 2 months out and really fighting not to regain a ton before my revision in February.

    Bypass Vs. Sleeve?

I'm going band to DS in august. My surgeon and I chose the DS because revisions tend to lose slower and the DS has a better track record when it comes to regain in the future. I'm an under 40 BMI patient with no comorbidities that count (I do have back issues and asthma).

    REvised surgery

Well I go in Monday for a revision on my band. They are calling it a stomach prolapse. So in other words my band slipped-Right? I just hope once they get in there they don't find anything to cause them to take it completely out. I have been vomiting for a few months now and the surgeon hasn't been in any hurry to do anything about it. He completely emptied the band hoping that would correct things-NOT! It has been so bad I sometimes hope they will take it out, but then again have loved the weight it has helped me get off. I know if I would have it off I would gain it all back because I could eat all the things I have been craving and can't eat with the band as it makes me sick-in one bite! So I will keep you posted on what the outcome is-I guess it is out patient surgery! (drive by surgery I call it)
  6. I had a revision to RNY because of severe acid reflux and erosion of the esophagus. Surgery date was 12/6/201lbs. Today 190lbs.. I was told by my doctor to expect to lose about 40% excess weight so time will tell. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T377A using BariatricPal mobile app

Band To Sleeve In Single Surgery?

I had revision band to sleeve last month. I think the actual surgery took about 1 1/2 hour -2 hours. I was sore but, wasn't in a great deal of pain. I was given morphine on a regular basis and I had the "On Q pain ball". I think that's what really made the big difference in the pain. I recommend asking your doctor about it. I was discharged on the second day. I think pain was about the same as when I initially got the band. I didn't take anything for pain after I got home. Initially I lost alot of weight with the band 80 lbs but then gained almost all of it back. I vomited almost daily and I couldn't eat chicken, turkey, salad, veggies, you know all the healthy stuff.

Did you develop GERD and/or Hiatal Hernias?

I went to WL support groups for 1 year before I had the sleeve. GERD was very common; but I discounted it because I didn’t understand that it’s NOT Your garden variety Pop-a-tums GERD. (I don’t think many of the Doctors really know how bad this type of GERD is.) The Bypass patients seemed to have really intense energy problems “, mal-nutrition and gas - so I opted for what I thought would be occasion TUMS. LOL - yeah - NO. People don’t go in for revision for that! I wish I could jump in a time machine and cancel the surgery.
  10. I get what you are saying - but my stomach was not working perfectly fine. It was a bottomless pit and always and I mean always hungry. That paper on the 5 year results is interesting. I had read before about all the "long term" issues with acid reflux before but this sure does drive that point home. It was a very small sample, but pretty astounding that nearly half had severe enough reflux that they needed to remain on PPIs, and some even revised to RNY to solve the reflux. I had read elsewhere that the issues with the acid go back up again around 3 years out, so even people who seem to be doing fine might have it rear it's ugly head...
  11. I'm 25 days post op but I already made the decision that if any complications occur, I won't revise or replace anything. Just take it and I will use every ounce of will power to continue to eat healthy. I hope that you make the tight decision for you and your family.
  12. This is my first post on the forum, so here goes. I got a band March 2006 and was self-pay. I'm scheduled to have a revision to VSG on October 30th with my original lapband surgeon. I went to him for a checkup because of abdominal pain. After an abdominal ultrasound it was found that I have gallstones. After discussing my band "issues", he suggested we do the sleeve. My insurance will pay for gallbladder removal, so we're going to do it all in the same procedure. I will pay $5000 for the band removal and VSG. This is much less than most revision surgeries since the insurance is already paying for the hospital, anesthesia, etc. I know this is not the way to go about it for most people, but it is something to consider if you have gallbladder issues and your insurance will cover removing it. Good luck!
  13. Hey All, My insurance Co., Aetna Health Care has approved the cost of removing my band but NOT the sleeve revision. My Dr says he can perform the procedure at the same time. Price will be $8000 for hospital and $1736 for his fee. Total $9736. I asked about a discount as it seems my insurance company is already paying for hospital, surgeon, anthestiga, etc. They are telling me no because it is two different procedures even though performed in in the same operation. Has anybody else run into this?? I expect to cover the cost difference and I am sure there are some but this really sounds like I am being double dipped. If anyone else has had this situation what was your out of pocket expenses?
  14. I've been banded 2 1/2 years. The first year was great. Found that sweet spot on the second fill. When I was 5-10 pounds away from goal, I started having problems. I was unfilled, and the battle began. I haven't been able to get that sweet spot again, and have constant problems with back aches, heart burn, acid reflux, former banders, you have all been there. In the short time I was unfilled completely, I gained back about 20 pounds. I've since lost that, but am sick of all this. I currently most likely have an expanded pouch yet AGAIN. The problem is that I was self pay, and insurance isn't even covering unfills due to dehydration (twice, yet they pay to have me go to urgent care and get 3 bags of fluids in me). What conditions will insurance pay for removal (and then a revision to a sleeve). I'm afraid to just get the band removed, I know I would gain everything back, but not sure if insurance would approve doing the sleeve at the same time since I am so close to my goal. The quality of life at this point is getting very frustrating. I can't eat healthy foods, and I can't even get in to a routine since one day I'm fine, then the next I'm throwing up an antacid tablet.
  15. Thank you all for your support. This post is very helpful since I had my revision to sleeve on 03/16/16 with Dr. Michael Choi. I don't feel any pain today; but my blood pressure was high this morning. I will check with it out at walgreens to see if I need to do something else. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App
  16. I was at my drs office most of the day the day before my revision. Had to retake he nutrition class (it had been 3 1/2 yrs since I last took it), had my hospital pre op (labs, ekg, registration) and then my final appt with my surgeon. But I think they did it that way cuz I live 3 hrs away and they were trying to keep it easy on me, less travel time. Just ask when they plan on ur surgery. Easy enuf to do...good luck with ur surgery!
  17. I just had revision from lap band to gastric bypass, only about 48 hrs out right now and one thing that really surprised me was how much more intense this surgery was then the lap band I’ve been in a good amount of pain.. think I got sent home a little to soon.. but I am having no desire to eat anything right now, basically having to force myself to get liquids down right now haven’t felt the pouch become “full” yet probably will when I switch to stage two foods, but I had the same feeling of being full in my throat with lap band too so be interesting to see how this feels. Good luck with everything!

    Any regrets?

I was banded in 2001 and revised to a banded plication in 2011. I wish I would've revised to a sleeve then. I had considered it but don't think I was quite ready. So like others - I wish I would've done it sooner. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks post op and feel great!
  19. Hi, I'm down almost 30 since my first visit to my revision surgeon. Since my lapband surgery in 2001, I've lost 50 pounds.

    Bile reflux?

Curious. I have seen a couple of sleevers over the years have that problem, but doe seem to be unusual, particularly compared to acid reflux (isn't it nice to be "special"?) but it doesn't seem to be any more prevalent with us than with the general population. It seems that most anyone can be subject to it on an occasional basis; it's the chronic condition that is problematic, so I guess that you continue to monitor things and see how it goes. There are tests that they can do to determine if this is a chronic thing and if something needs to be done, so keep on them about it if it continues to be a bother. There was one gal a few years ago whos surgeon revised her to an RNY to treat it, which seemed odd given its' predisposition toward it, but it seemed to work (at least initially - like most, she dropped off the forums after a few months) so presumably the surgeon did everything in the RNY toolkit to avoid it. The better approach if things are that bad is to revise it to a DS as that is as good of a cure as one can find (it puts the stomach and bile ducts at near opposite ends of the GI tract, so it's virtually impossible for the two to mix), but most bariatric surgeons don't know how to do that one. Hopefully, you don't need to go so far as a surgical solution. Good luck!
  21. I'm also considering having my band removed and the plication taken down. I'm at the 4.5 year mark and having horrible reflux and some other discomfort. The reflux is so bad, I'm hoarse all the time and wake up coughing. I'm 62 and scared to revise to a RNY at my age. But I've gained about 30 of the 70 pounds I lost with the band, and I'm afraid I will gain all of it back; possibly more. I'm also scared that the band is doing damage." Have no fear! I had gastric bypass at 62, last year, after having the band removed. the band caused a ton of scar tissue internally. the surgeon said he worked over an hour to get it all out before he could proceed to the bypass. so it was a long surgery but totally worth it. Much easier to live with. I am retired but you could probably go back to work in two weeks' time. I have lost much more weight with bypass and have a feeling it will be easier to keep it off due to the mandatory restrictions. My friend was 65 when she had hers done. YMMV
  22. I had a band placed back in May 2011 (or was it 2010) did great at first until my gallbladder pitched a fit and had to be removed. It was a straight uphill climb after that. I started at 239 with my band, got down somewhere around 185 then shot back up to 242 when I consulted my surgeon about a revision. I didn’t have any major complications with my band, just couldn’t get back into the zone. I had enough when water started to get “stuck” and i would have to pb into a plastic bag while driving. Fast forward to 2017 at 242 I asked a different surgeon (due to location, still love my original surgeon) about a revision. 8/8/2017 I was revised from band to SIPS DS. No hospital stay, it was done in one outpatient surgery. As with almost all band patients I had a lot of scar tissue but my surgeon was able to remove the band and complete the DS in one. So thankful for that.
  23. Don't have any answers yet... but I go in for band to bypass revision this Saturday... I also had tons of issues with my 8 year old lapband... I did have a good 90lb weight loss but after my pregnancy it slipped and landed me in the ER not able to swallow even spit for 5 days... lived off an IV pretty much... not fun. From what I've read the band to bypass revision people have said bypass is 100% better, you feel full, no GERD, no puking... Im very excited!
  24. @@t_marie I had the band for 5 years with many issues. I originally lost 80lbs, but gained back 55lbs from them having to keep taking Fluid out. But I had issues with that dang thing since day 1. But I finally had mine taken out in November 2015 and revised to RNY. I'm so glad I had that horrid band removed!!
