2 Months and 1 week post op sleeve

It sounds silly, but do you have one of those medicine cups laying around the house somewhere? If so, you might try to fill it and drink it over the course of 10 minutes, 5 sips total. Most medicine cups are 1 ounce. If you practice these 5 small sips over the course of 10 minutes, it may help you find a pace that works for you. This is something that is recommended by my program for post-op. I will be trying it for myself. My surgery is on August 1st and it is the sleeve!
  2. 1) Buy a BMW motorcycle and not have to immediately have the suspension replaced with one for my weight (I've owned three BMWs and had to do it on all three). 2) If I get all the way to my goal of 200 pounds (or lighter), I'm buying a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S convertible! 3) Start camping again, and possibly motorcycle camping again. 4) Take a motorcycle tour of the Alps in Europe. 5) I would love to fall in love again; have a companion to do things with. 6) Go hiking again in Arches National Park. 7) Replace my entire wardrobe. 8) Learn to fly an airplane. 9) Go to graduate school and earn my MS and my PhD. 10) Have professional photos / headshots taken.
  3. Land sakes hadn't heard that for a while, got another one that goes with my pen name Frustr8,"as frustrated as a wallpaperer with weak paste" At any rate, you are among friends here, anything you need answered, we will be happy to help. Some people get brave sooner than others, I will have my RnY September 5th At the age of 72 years 8 months and 10 days. Been seeking it since August 2015, a lot of twists, turns, a few roadblocks, quagmires, and a rollercoaster of emotion, in 6 weeks I'll have my satisfaction. I am ready to make my remaining years better, healthier, thinner and I hope fitter. That last for a redheaded post-menopausal broad might not be achievable, but I will try very hard. Didn’t have to do a peer to peer. After I completed 90 day multi disciplinary regimen, I was approved for surery 10 days after all my paperwork was submitted.

    Meat tolerance post-op

Hey sleevers! I had my VSG done on 5-10-18. I’m getting my protein in thanks to two isopure shakes a day, but I’d like to start moving away from shakes (per my doctor’s recommendations). But I cannot tolerate meat! I can get down some thinly sliced cooked chicken, and a little tuna salad, but that’s it. No cold cuts, no read meat no turkey. Has anyone else had a problem with meat after surgery? It does not stay down. I just vomit it right back up. To be honest, I still have a hard time with vomiting with a lot of foods, but if meat goes in, I’m a sick mess for the rest of the day. Is this a forever thing? And as a side note, have any of you had regurgitating problems this far out from surgery? Thanks for any help you can provide. VSG: 5/10/18 HW: 311 SW: 256 CW: 212 GW: 145

Upset about weight loss, not sure what to do

I found two interesting slideshows on the site Matt recommended to calculate one's BMR. https://www.active.com/fitness/articles/10-surprising-reasons-you-re-not-losing-weight https://www.active.com/food-and-nutrition/articles/8-ways-to-eat-more-protein Obviously, some of us haven't graduated to some of the foods suggested... yet. I'm not terribly disappointed in not being able to eat turkey jerky anyway.
  7. I stalled after week 4 for the entire month. In fact, I even gained 10 lbs. Eventually, the weight loss started back up again and I'm losing a pretty steady pace of around 5lbs a week. Losing weight really comes down to calories in, calories out. People try to make it more complicated than it has to be. The amount of weight you loose at first also has a lot to do with how overweight you were to begin with. I was 375lbs, so I had quite a bit to loose and my initial weight loss would be much more than someone who only had to loose 50-100lbs. Don't get discouraged. You're very likely eating more than you should, even if you don't recognize that. Your body may still be going through an adjustment period. If you're eating fewer calories than your BMR, you will lose. Also, be happy with a slower, progressive weight loss vs. a rapid weight loss. You may find that your skin has more time to recover and won't be so loose.
  8. With a Ryvita or Wasa cracker ;Fresh basil or mint leaves, a *thin* slice of watermelon, a strawberry sliced very thinly, Alone: 10 blueberries, 10 pistachios, 1/2 tsp of jam, 1tsp of crushed pineapple , 2 slices of canned peach, 3tsp of hempseeds, 1tsp of agave syrup or honey (if allowed)

    Shopping....

I've been spending a lot of time at consignment shops - I bought a beautiful Lily Pulitzer skirt (retails about $150) for $10 - so no skin off my nose when it doesn't fit any more! I have had to buy some "good" clothes for work but try to keep the pieces basic so this way a change in one size won't kill it, but my blazer is starting to look like it belongs to my husband when I put it on - so I guess a new one is needed for when I need to show up in court.
  10. Best of luck to you! I know exactly where you are....I am 44, battled my weight for Years, BP meds for 10 Years, pre diabetic, sleep apnea, etc. Just 7 Months out, I am off BP meds, no longer pre diabetic and no longer have sleep apnea. Easily the best decision I have ever made for my health. I hope everything goes well for you

    November sleevers here

I have never done the pouch reset diet (pouch test) but I’ve heard mixed things about it. My doc says it doesn’t reset anything physically, but for me it is the mental and emotion stuff that I need to reset anyways. I’ve read some people losing 5-10 lbs and breaking out of a long stall & breaking old habits that snuck back in. I would like to try it as well. I have bounced between 170-175 for about 2 months now. I’m out of school for the summer and being home all day has opened the door for snacking. Im snacking on fruit but they are heavy in carbs 😞. I’m working on breaking that habit now and I think the reset is just what I need 👍🏼
  12. Hey, what's wrong with benzodiazepines? I take two short-acting ones, clonazepam (at bedtime) and alprazolam (for panic attacks.) Don't worry, I understand how and when not to mix my meds, including my opioids and benzos. I also take sertraline (depression) and buspirone (anxiety). I used to be touchy about the idea of taking addictive medication. As a chronic pain patient, I tried several non-narcotic and holistic approaches to pain relief. My daughter finally explained to me the difference between addiction and dependence. She told me that there is no shame in taking morphine, for example. I am dependent on the drug for pain relief. Yes, I would have withdrawal symptoms if I stopped taking it, but I'm not addicted in the sense that I'm stealing money out of my 19-year-old son's piggy bank because it makes me feel all warm and wonderful. Really, I'm just addicted to not being in around-the-clock pain! And taking morphine for someone who is opioid-tolerant does give one a "high"; it merely takes the edge off the pain so I can function without tears of pain running down my face.

How/What do you tell your kids?

My kids are 7, 10, and 12. I just explained the surgery, how it works, and why I was doing it - to get healthier. Talked about what to expect with my recovery in broad strokes. They got it and have been wonderful support and encouragement!
  14. Well I understand how you feel . Completely. There is a good part and bad to feeling just fine after surgery. You don’t suffer- but you can also be tempted to eat . Trust me- I feel that way 10 months out... still guilty when my stomach doesn’t hurt..

    Day 5 post op-tolerating shakes

WOW. It's amazing how each doctor is different. I had surgery on July 11th as well. I am still on clear liquids until day 10 then progress to protein shakes, soups, and yogurt. I am glad I joined this group. Full of good information.
  16. Thank you Kat0000 and Gingersnap112, odd Gingersnaps was one of my son's programs. Think he may have had a wee crush on Emily Perkins. At any rate it,is wonderful,to know I have 2 nice friends following me. It was a very, nice exam etc I had today, with Dr Needleman. He is as nice as I hoped he would be, he was amazed at how much I knew already, actually didn't learn as much as some because I am so,prepared but did glean some information to fill in the gaps Every challenge he presented, I believe I can accomplish. I really, feel like we are a team willing to work for me. Yeah he is a very busy guy, but he has this way of making each of us feel we are the most important patient in the 🌎to him. That's not, something easily taught, it comes from within. He's maybe 49-50 years old, getting gray a little, but cares and is approachable tous. Much better person than that first Asswhat surgeon I met at the previous place. And I feel very safe in his care. He was reading the whole list of bad things that can happen and I'm shaking my head NO. He asked me why, I told him nothing bad would happen, he is too good a surgeon, he would not want to mess up his record and my whole day by a calamity. Oh some of the things I have heard on Bariatric Pal are so funny, one woman was worried she would talk about ex-husbands and lovers while under anesthesia. Don't know if I helped when I told her she would have a breathing tube down her throat and couldn't say a word. Another was concerned about people who. might see her unclothed. Pish tosh, good ole Frust8 is going to be lying,on her back, arms secured so I don't slip off the table, belly pumped up so high I look like I'm expected octuplets and I should whether, people know the shade of every hair,on my body? Ask me , I'm 72, people who knew secrets about me are long gone. Got little if any shame in my game, yeah I'm a redhead all over, what does it matter if 8 to 10 more people know that? Unless the TV crews have a wide angle lens they can't get all of me in one picture! Yesterday someone was worried they didn't have an hourglass figure , shoot,i do, instead of 36-25-36 I'm 58-46-58 and my thighs are like bundt cakes instead of muffins, but I believe I'll renovate well, once I peel off my fat covering I am going to be dy-no-mite and really rock the senior set. Might take a year, might take 18 months, but I will be Cutie Pie reconditioned from Big Mama. Big project but i,am the woman for it!😝🍀❤

    Rate your recovery

3 out of 10 Apart from some minor pain, slight constipation and some fatigue, the recovery has been fairly smooth, so far. I didn't particularly enjoy injecting myself with blood thinners for a week though. I've had a laparotomy (open surgery) before, and the VSG was a doddle compared to that.
  18. As for me - it is over 8 years sleeved for me now and things haven't really changed in the last year. I am down a little but still at least 14lbs over where I stabilised, which was another 14lbs where I set a goal weight! So, all in all I would still like to get rid of at least 28lbs! I've had to buy new clothes - that was really depressing! And I have zero energy to work out. School life is really stressful and my anxiety levels are ever increasing whereas my sleep is decreasing! This leaves me in a constant state of exhaustion. This is the last week in school before the summer holidays. We are going away Tuesday for 3 weeks and as much as I am looking forward to it I am dreading the whole swimming costume-wearing malarkey! It is gonna be three weeks of 'faking it, 'til I make it!' Plus a lot of sleeping and rest. On a plus note, I went back to being vegetarian last Sept and I have now fully transitioned to a vegan way of eating. This has been a really powerful move for me, not only for ethical reasons but for health reasons too. I initially looked into it to see if it would help my menopause - I have really been suffering with the symptoms for nearly 10 years and it is really getting me down (plus I am sure it has contributed to my weight gain). So, I thought I would see if changing my diet to a more plant based/vegan way would help. Although, I still get major hot flushes, they have generally decreased. My headaches/migraines have also improved. But, the biggest change is the digestion of my food. I have always been constipated - all my life - and since I removed dairy, especially cow's milk, I am no longer constipated! This has made me really hopeful that my gut is now working better and therefore my metabolic rate is improving. With time (and rest from work) I am hoping that my body will keep responding and I will feel more energised and therefore move more. I refuse to give up! I refuse to accept this weight that I am currently. I will keep on keeping on!

    July Gastric Bypass?

Do you have to have another endoscopy (I assume how they saw the liver) prior to clearance? I would imagine your doctor estimated how much time you would need before surgery. I'm one of few that wasn't told to be on a liquid diet. I need to now because my "last supper" which lasted the past few weeks has me up 10 pounds. I'm the same way, though, I worry about everything. I still have to get clearance from the cardiologist and take a stress test the day before surgery. Crazy! Hang in there.

    Should I be offended?!

Ugh!! I wish he wasn’t the best in the area, but he’s honestly probably the best in New York! It’s the only center in the state that has both a Bariatric and metabolic program combined. I’m just trying to brush it off. He’s operating on my stomach, not my muscles, so I’ll give him the pass this time. It was irritating to say the least, especially because he has no idea that I was an elite gymnast for 10 years 😂 like I know what I’m doing, bro. Anyway, I appreciate the support! It makes me feel better that I wasn’t just being a SENSITIVE, EMOTIONAL FEMALE... you know how we are 🤣

    I can't make a decision

Have you looked at any of the numerous studies on outcomes, both short and long term, for surgical weight loss versus diet/lifestyle changes? Overall, less than 10% of people who set out to lose 60-80% of their body weight will succeed with diet/lifestyle changes. With surgery 80% of people lose 60-80% of their bodyweight. 5 years later only 20% of the LESS THAN 10% who succeeded with diet/lifestyle changes are maintaining. With surgery, it's about 80% of the 80%. Gastric sleeve does a lot more than reduce stomach by 80-85%. The portion of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone gherlin is removed. As people suffering from obesity, our bodies because immune to leptin, a hormone our body makes that aides in appetite suppresion and signals satiety. After surgery, this immunity is no longer present. Gastric sleeve surgery is a reset for your body is so many ways. I think you need to better under the complexity of the surgery and how it truly affects bodies. There are many studies showing how the neuromapping in our brains actually changes following bariatric surgery. Obesity is a disease process and willpower alone is rarely the cure. Best wishes to you! My Blog: www.nourishingheather.com HW: 325 CW: 314 Surgery Date: 8/1/18 GW: 160

    Should I be offended?!

I think a lot of good things have been said already, but I'll just throw in that even though I liked my surgeon a lot, I saw him one office visit pre op, 10 minutes before surgery, and never again. All my post ops have been his assistant. Maybe that'll be the case with your program? *crosses fingers*
  25. Hi! Does anyone drink the Fairlife Core Power Protein Coffee Shakes? I am in love with these, especially because of the 26 grams of protein in each one and the bit of caffeine! However, they are high in carbs at 21 grams and have 19 grams of sugar. Am I making a bad choice to drink these? Thanks for any advice!!
