    Sleeve or gastric bypass

I am by no means an expert, so please verify any and all advice I give you with a doctor/surgeon should you consider taking it. My Background: I originally wanted to get the lapband, but I was told during my WLS open house (Q & A session) that the band had fallen out of favor and that many people have reported issues of slippage and that many banders complain about frequent re-fillings in the beginning before the surgeon finally finds your band's "sweet spot" (where it's not so tight that you can barely eat, but not so loose that you're eating everything that isn't nailed down) Also, my best friend has the lap band and she hates having to go in for adjustments every 6 - 8 weeks, plus after she lost about 60 lbs (she weighed like 320 lbs and is 5'11) her weight loss slowed and despite all the exercise and dietary options she tried, her weight loss stalled and she's now been prescribed diet pills by her doctor. She is considering having her band revised to a sleeve. So then my choice was between the gastric sleeve and the gastric by pass Why I choose the sleeve: My understanding is that the sleeve was developed for "at risk" gastric bypass candidates. The sleeve was supposed to be the first step to help the person lose weight, then they'd come in later for the gastric bypass/rny. However, what they found is that in addition to being less invasive (thus safer and more preferred) that gastric sleeve patients have virtually no dumping and other surgery-related complications like the by - pass. Plus, my surgeon said I was a good candidate for the sleeve because I did not have hundreds of pounds to lose (I was about 245 lbs, and my goal is 150 - 160 lbs). I'm very happy with my sleeve. I've lost about 70 lbs (though to be fair, I lost about 16 lbs from the liquid diet they put me on 10 days before my surgery and about 54 lbs from the surgery itself)

I am also a revision from band to sleeve!

    7 weeks post op

I feel your frustration. I had revision surgery from band to sleeve on June 7th and I just feel like I should be losing faster. I lost 25lbs in the first couple of weeks but the last 3 weeks I've only lost 3lbs. It's a bit disappointing because when I had my band I lost weight a lot more consistently. I'm trying to exercise more and make some adjustments to see if I can kickstart the weight loss again. Damn slow metabolism.
  4. Hi: I have a small slip that doesn't seem to want to repair itself even after being unfilled for more than 5 weeks. I love my band, and I need my old "belly cop" to work his magic again. I'm scheduled to have revision surgery on 7/20. I think I'm just having the band fixed and the port will stay right where it is. My surgeon is going to use the larger, newer model band than the small one I currently have. So, I imagine that getting to my sweet spot is going to take alot more fills than the first time around. Can anyone's whose gone through this twice tell me what's different the second time around? I'm within 20 pounds of my goal, so I don't have to do the ten day clear liquid pre-op diet. Other than that, though I don't know what to expect different. Please share your experience with me if you've had band revision surgery. Thanks. Sue

    Wooohooo I was APPROVED!

Priority Health. They've just revised their revision policy so I'm in a waiting stage now. My surgeons office should be submitting for approval this week. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Thanks to everyone for answering...I do know what it's like to have my Farwell meal amd work through all of that...I had a lapband in 2007. It's an ongoing progress with food issues but any WLS makes it doable as in loosing weight before always ended in a failure. I do know the reason for the revision just not how long I could put off the surgery. The reason...prolapse of my stomach through the band, hiatal hernia, dilated esphogaus AND gaining weight. I truly am fearful about having surgery in Mexico...I know many have had wonderful experiences..it's just not for me. It's so nice of you all to care enough to post.

What do you tell ppl at work?

I am a lapband survivor too - and I think that is a reason why I have chosen not to tell anyone about my sleeve revision. It was kind of embarrassing to face the people who knew I had the lap-band when I regained weight after the slippage and unfill. I don't want to deal with any scrutiny or questions this time. When asking for the time off, I chose to be vague about needing medical care and needing to be out of the office. I do not feel anyone is entitled to more detailed info about my health than that. After all, if I was having a gynecologic surgery or hemorrhoids removed, I probably wouldn't want to tell the people at work details about those kinds of surgeries either, so people should know better than to pry. If people ask about the weight loss I'll just say that I am eating smaller portions and being more active (which is true after surgery for most of us after all). I had my sleeve revision Dec 29th and I am returning to work tomorrow (Jan 3rd). I do feel ready for it, thank goodness (the first two days after surgery were really tough but I felt significantly better after that and each day has been better since). My job isn't extremely physical though, and I was fortunate enough to not have any complications that made recovery slower.
  8. Hi - I'm scheduled to have the RNY revision from Sleeve on March 13, 2020 in TJ Mexico. I'm curious to hear about what the weightloss after revision has been for those of you that have had it. I've tried searching but I'm not finding a ton on stats. I'm having the revision due to GERD and to continue losing weight. I have about 80 lbs to lose total after losing about 120 lbs with the sleeve. Here is my before (420 lbs) and after to date (306 lbs). Lowest weight was 279 which I'm trying to get back to by my surgery date.
  9. I'll be getting my sleeve to bypass revision in March as well (March 3rd), but I'll be getting it done in Europe. Even though I had a successful surgery with my sleeve in Tijuana a few years ago, overall I was not impressed with the whole experience, so decided to try elsewhere (I live in Japan so a big overseas trip is a necessity for me no matter what). What's interesting to me is that the pre- and post-op diet recommendations are vastly different than to what I'm used to, so we'll see how that goes.
  10. I'm not sure, I just signed up - I will have to search. I was lurking on the Band to VSG page for quite some time, but I haven't checked any other topics, I guess I should. I personally know someone who has had surgery by my new surgeon but hers was not a revision and it was RNY, she did lose all of her weight and started out at my same weight (389lbs) but that's all I know about him other than his practice is completely different than my original band surgeon's practice which was in and out, wham, bam, thank you ma'am. I feel much more comfortable here, like I can really research the options I have and take my time making up my mind about which surgery will be best for me.
  11. I think the reason for this is the band, to be honest. from talking to my surgeon, the month before my surgery, he took out 17 bands and put in only one. Each of those removals would count as a revision I think. That makes sense. I was wondering if it was because the sleeve revisions increased.

    Veteran Sleever having complications

I flew to Dallas the other day for an appt with a surgeon who was able to get me in next day. My sleeve and esophogas is eroded and I have to have a revision to RNY. I'm on weekly infusions, meds to coat my stomach in hopes of keeping food down, and zofran until surgery. I'm so disappointed and scared! I've now failed TWO WLS's!
  13. That is odd! I am having revision to bypass to alleviate my severe GERD so this doesn't make me feel entirely too good! I hope you find answers with you endo/contact with your surgeon, good luck!

    Rny vs sleeve

I think it is hard for anyone to give an objective answer on this because most people haven't had both. Those who have will have been revising from another surgery so that will skew their opinion as well. Some things to consider. Sleeve Is a restrictive only procedure, apparently there is a quite high risk of reflux,it cannot be reversed but it is possible to revise to a DS bypass. Bypass Is restrictive and malabsorptive, risk of reflux seems to be very low, certain foods e.g alcohol and sugar may cause dumping. It can be reversed if necessary but this is complicated.

Making a list... checking it 75,925 times!

If you show signs of severe acid reflux (Gerd), RNY gastric surgery may be a better option than sleeve surgery, because sleeve surgery tends to make this condition worse. Several individuals had to have their sleeves revised to gastric bypass after they showed began experience significant problems with Gerd after surgery. In my case, I felt that if was going under the knife once I absolutely didn't want to go under a second time. Once is enough for me.
  16. Hi all, I haven't posted here in years! I'll try to give a quick recap of my history... I had lap band surgery back in 2008. I did well in the first year, lost 70 pounds, felt great for the most part with less hunger and cravings. But then I started having reflux issues. Not acid reflux, but at night I would wake up choking on... basically saliva. It was really unpleasant and worrisome that one day I wouldn't wake up and just asphyxiate in my sleep. Turned out my band had slipped. Had revision surgery in 2009, but was never able to get back to the sweet spot I had in the first year. Even though my band never slipped again, when it's tight enough to help me out I get that same night reflux thing (even if I haven't eaten for 2-3 hours before bed). So at this point I've gained back all the lost weight and am in the process of trying to get insurance approval for the sleeve. I never had other typical band problems - didn't get stuck a lot, never felt too tight during the day with eating and drinking. It was just the sleep choking issue that caused me not to be able to keep the band tight. I have barely any liquid in my band now. I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem with the band and had better success with the sleeve. My worst fear is that I get sleeved and then have that problem forever! Another question - my husband says he's worried about longterm health problems with the sleeve. He was comfortable with me getting the band, but the sleeve is freaking him out a bit. Wondering if anyone knows anything about longterm studies maybe in other countries, since it hasn't been done in the US for very long. Thanks so much - I look forward to participating in this community if/when I am approved for this surgery!! Susan

    Failed bandster planning for sleeve

SO Here I am 1 yr out and only 20 lbs down TOTAL! with the Band.. I CANT keep anything down.. I just had all my Fluid removed.. can't eat solids ALWAYS felt restriction and vomited/slimed/coughed/belched almost daily and still NO significant weight loss. Mind you the 1st 20 LBS came off right after surgery. I can't eat meat! forget bread noodles Pasta of any kind! I don't try to cheat I am not a snacker. I just plateaued 2 months after tighten and loosened. My Surgeon sent me to have an endoscopy at a True Results center and I got slammed with a $17k facility fee and a $10k endoscopy fee. Which was more than the Lapband all together. I can't believe this. I wanted this "TOOL" to work and assist me. Today we discussed Revision to sleeve but My insurance will only cover 1 surgery for life of the plan. He wants to remove it ASAP stating I am just not compatible with the band. He is deeming it medically necessary to remove band.. But then what!?? No revision? Someone please tell me how this will work with my Insurance. Antem Bcbs said the Doc needs to send in a preDetermination Deemed Medically necessary for me to have revision. Anyone experience this?? Please Help!!
  18. I find it interesting that when the sleeve increased to 51% in 2014 that revisions also increased to 11%.

    Port Discomfort

Funny you should ask about this today. At our support group meeting last week, the doctor was there taking questions and I asked him if being pregnant would cause the port to move up and rub on the rib? He said that shouldn't be a problem. But I think it makes since that it would cause it to push against your rib as I even noticed that it did that again when I gained a little weight back. ??? Who knows! It never made a difference with mine if I wore jeans or not, however, I always wore stretchy jeans with elastic waist. The only thing that helped me was taking pain meds for about 3 months until I lost enough weight around my midriff that caused the port to move down enough to stop rubbing my rib. After all that, I had to have a port revision yesterday because there was a hole in the tubing. I had been getting fills for the last 6 months and it would only last for about a week each time. When dr replaced the port, he moved it down a couple of inches and over to the middle more. The original port was also sewn in at an angle so he sewed it straight this time so it won't be so hard to fill. I hope it works this time. I'm ready to get back to losing. Good luck and let us know what your doctor says about your port.
  20. So a little background. I am banded and have been for over 2 years. I am 20lbs from goal but can't get any closer (been same weight for 15 months up and down 5 lbs). Though I have been banded for 2 years I am still having to deal with fills etc on a reg basis. It's not a problem here because with my doctor it is cheap. However I am moving to another country soon and since I wasnt banded there the fills will probably cost a fortune. Another problem is my fills are hard to do. My port is hard to access and thus fills would probably be even more expensive since I must be under an xray machine to get a fill. My doctor gave me the option of getting the sleeve instead of keeping the band. It would be better for maintenance for sure but I am not sure if I should do it or not. There is nothing wrong with my band right now and I could wait HOWEVER my doctor is offering a good price since it is a revision from the band ( which he put in me). If I wait and get it done later somewhere else I will be paying more than $5,000 more then what I can pay now ( and traveling back to my doc is not an option because it is on the other side of the world. THe flight plus needing to stay in the same country for weeks to heal isnt worth it). So reasons to yes no more fills save hundreds not getting fills no more band in my stomach no yearly tests to make sure the band isnt stretched, have erosion etc easier to hide from people ( no one knows im banded either) can help me reach my goal weight Reasons to no there is nothing wrong with my band I have lost weight but just not at my goal I am used to the lifestyle with the band I am freaked out by cutting and taking out some of my stomach So I am hoping some band to sleeve people will help give me some insight but anyones thoughts on this would be great. Should I switch to the sleeve to get rid of future what ifs?
  21. I've said all along, that I wouldn't have a revision if I lost my band. But now? I don't even know what the sleeve would be like after plication. Or if it's even possible. I have a lot to address with my doctor at my next visit. I want his take on the whole health insurance issue, and if there might be a way around it. A big question in my mind is, if new insurance is supposed to cover pre-existing conditions, would our surgeries be covered under that caveat? If we had a serious complication that required removal of the band, wouldn't that be considered "pre-existing"? Geez……so much to think about. I don't know that we'll get definitive answers, either. Last night……as I lay awake at 3am…..Thanksgiving sugar cursing through my veins, I was having a bit of meltdown on this. I really did a number on myself with all the possibilities, in addition to wondering how the hell I let myself eat too much crap. Okay…..it was a holiday…..I'm moving on
  22. I am at 3 months post brachio and revised tummy tuck (skin only not muscle). I had a 3 month follow up and he pointed to a few areas like by my elbows and on one side on my stomach and said it still a little swollen. I know it takes a year to see more of a final result but I kind of assumed that once the initial swelling was gone after 2-3 months any changes after would be very subtle. My waist is measuring 31 inches. I don't feel swollen but has anyone else really seen a big difference this far out. Could I go down a whole inch from here? I think he will need to go back in another 6 months to fix some bagginess and skin laxity still near my armpit and he agreed. I also have 2 areas with a tiny fold or pucker of the skin at the incision line. I asked about my scars that are still red and was given the 1 year answer but I am hopeful that in the next few months it will start to fade some. He wanted me to continue silicone tape or cream or even coconut cream but said to NOT use Bio oil. He said it is not good for post surgical scars.

Fear About Potential Loss Of Bariatric Coverage

I have thought about the same thing and often. I'm at a loss. I don't won't to ever lose my band because I've had tremendous success with it. But, the thought of having it without insurance coverage to adequately care for it terrifies me. I see a lot of self pay people and people who've lost their coverage who talk about going years without a check because they can't afford it. When they finally go back in, they have bad complications and slips because of poor after care. After care with the band is crucial. I'm not sure what I'll do I'd I lose coverage for it. Do I get it removed? Revise to the Sleeve? I honestly don't know. I only know it would force me to make some really hard decisions.
  24. I'm 33. I had my initial RNY at 22. I lost 150 pounds. I started at 375. And then I found out the day after my surgery my doctor was out of business because he lost his medical insurance. I followed up with another doctor after and found my pouch was too big. I was devastated to say the least. Over the last 10 years I went almost back to my original weight. I had a revision at 350 done in April of 2015. I've lost 100-ish pounds since then. But now I'm stuck again. I live in Dallas, TX. Been through a divorce right before my revision. I'm engaged but I feel bad for my fiancé. He tries so hard not to show that my weight bothers him. He loves me unconditionally but I want to be the girl he deserves. Starting Monday I'm doing a 10 day pouch reset diet. Has anyone done one of these before. As for exercise I'm getting back into 1 hour a day on the wii fit and my Apple Watch say I burn around 400 calories in the hour. All in all I'm 250 I was to lose another 100 pounds to be not only a better looking girl for my soon to be husband. But also happier and healthier for myself. Any tips or advice are welcome from all. Looking forward to getting the help and support I didn't get the first time. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
