I'm a month post-surgery (Aug 1), and I was feeling pretty wiped out at the end of the day until I had been on the stage 2 diet for a couple of days. At that point, the caloric intake went back up from 200-300 to around 500-600. Protein shakes, soup and yogurt made a big difference. Good luck!

Line in the Sand Approach or Ease into Pre-op Diet?
Mini_me007 replied to Beachsprite's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will start mine on August 3. I'm working in some protein shakes/bars, Greek yogurt, etc, not really so much to ease into it, but to see what I like so I'll know beforehand. -
Just thought I would share an update on how I am doing, as I know this post will benefit those who are still preparing for surgery (I was reading everything all over this board leading up to my surgery as well!) I had surgery last Tuesday, Jan 24th at 8:30am. I was in the hospital for one night. My surgeon keeps most patients two nights but I was walking, drinking, passed the leak test and tolerating puree 24 hours after surgery so he gave me the option to stay or leave. I have been on a puree diet for a week now. I eat four times a day. The first meal is a protein shake and then other three are 3-4 oz of low fat pureed protein (chicken, tuna, greek yogurt or cottage cheese). I really don't feel much hunger, and if I do it's usually in my head. Because I have to eat so slowly, sometimes I even forget to finish something and then it becomes a chore to get it done (definitely a different behavior than I am used to). If I eat something too quickly my chest gets tight, so I have slowed down even more. I have been blessed that nothing has made me sick yet. I did have nausea at first, but my surgeon gave me a prescription to control that. The first few days I was also having esophageal spasms and stomach cramps, and I even had to sip my fluids very very slowly. My surgeon said these were normal symptoms and they went away after a few days. I am able to get my fluids in more comfortably now. I did end up with constipation so I had to take some milk of magnesia, but no big deal. I have been walking every day since I got home. The first few days I would have somebody take me to the grocery store with them and I would walk around pushing the cart (it was cold outside!). This week I have been going to my gym everyday and walking slowly on the treadmill for 30min. All in all, it was 4-5 days after surgery until I felt back to "normal" (excluding eating of course). Best wishes to all those who have an upcoming surgery and to those who already had their surgery and started the next chapter of their journey!

Pureed/Blenderized Foods Suggestions
KathyD49 replied to Empty_Nest2001's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been doing lots of smoothies. I usually start with a scoop of Protein powder, and then go from there. One morning I put in a banana and some vanilla yogurt (Yoplait Lite Very Vanilla), and a little skin milk, and a dash of vanilla. Another morning, I used orange yougurt (again, I use Yoplait Lite Orange), and a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder and a scoop of Orange Sherbert and a little milk. Also have tried some chocolate protein powder with chocolate yogurt and milk. The possibilities are endless. I have trouble getting enough protein into my diet, so I am always looking for something to mix with the protein powder. There is a Huge list of Protein Drink recipes somewhere on this site that Tiffykins posted in May of 2010. The web address is: www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/5906-a-huge-list-of-protein-drink-recipes/ try looking through the recipes and see if some of them don't appeal to you. I found lots of ideas from her list for things that I could shove in the blender and mix up. -
My First Week On The Road At 4 Weeks Post Gastric Sleeve Op.....an Eye Opener.
Rev Me Up! replied to Queen of Crop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Holy Moly, I can't imagine an aggressive Europe schedule that soon after surgery, but it looks like you are making the best of it!! I was dead-exhasted for 8 weeks after surgery - no way I would have been a good travel companion. The best thing in Europe are the breakfasts, no? All the cheese, meat, and yogurt a new sleever could ask for!! I did a work trip to the UK at about 3 months post op and I would raid the Breakfast offerings and stuff them in my purse for later. I took a yogurt for breakfast, a spare yogurt for later, and a packet of hot Cereal that I would make with hot milk in the office. Peel the meat off a sandwich, toppings off of a pizza, or order a tapas plate and I was good to go. String cheese was another purse-staple. BTW - oatmeal, hot meusli, or whatever you can find may help your constipation issues. I religiously ate at least one meal of whole grain hot cereal a day in the first few months. Bon chance! -
I Just Can't Eat Slow Enough!
Qpdsful replied to DebiC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Take your time....if you don't you will toss up your intake!! I am 4 months post op and I have never been one to eat slow, or toss my food...sadly if I eat too much too fast or something that doesn't agree here it comes...TMI I am sure. I start with protein and fiber in my coffee every am, than my vitamins, I take celery, and high protein as well as yogurt to snack on during the day at work. It is WORK just to eat....so I have two or three nibbles, and move on to something else. READ...or relax this is a transitional life change...YOU CAN DO IT!! Sometimes I am so frustrated in my decision but when I am cleaning out my closet it makes me smile!!! -
Does Any One Else Not Like The Feeling Of Food In Their Gastric Sleeve?
Rev Me Up! replied to Shoppingbeemom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard for me to remember when food started to feel better. Even now, if it is the wrong food, or I don't chew, or I eat too fast/too much it is uncomfortable. There are a couple of major milestones that seem to change how we feel. 3 months is where you can eat the 2 bites and feel less weird. 6 months is where you can eat a bit more and more variety. In the first several months I ate 6 times a day. I portioned everything out into baggies in the morning. I ate yogurt, cheese, and meat. I would have a little oatmeal for Fiber and always take my Vitamin. This helped me get closer to the goals the doc set for me but I think I was around 600 cals per day for at least 4 months. Eating was not a pleasurable experience. It was something I did to survive. I would get weird hot flashes when I was eating. Sometimes I felt like my body would rush all the blood I had to my stomach when I ate - my heart would pound. It will pass, but you are also learning good lessons during this time. I am about 9 months out and I still eat 4-5 times a day because I eat really small meals. Ice cream makes me sick. Bread gives me terrible heartburn. Dark chocolate is my new favorite thing, and my love affair with chicken continues... If I eat too fast, my stomach will be unhappy. I never drink anything after I eat, because it feels horrible. These don't seem like "problems" to me now because they quickly become a habit. Hang in there!! -
This is my first post so go easy on me. ;-} I was banded on Dec 14th and I had my 1st fill on January 4th of 3 cc's, another on February 5th of 2cc's and the 3rd fill on the 5th of March of 1.5 cc's (total of 6.5cc's no I do not know what size my band is but felt like I was truly restricted for the first time) and everything seemed to be fine. I was back on liquids for 2 days, then soft foods for 1, and finally had my first meal Friday night. I ate my 3 oz of turkey and about a 1/4 cup of green Beans and felt satisfied so I stopped there. I was finally feeling like I might be where I needed to be. I got up Saturday and had my hot drink with my Mucinex and as happened since the fill I felt a little tightness when swallowing first thing in the morning but after an hour or so that went away unless I took too big of a bite or swallow then I would have that tightness again. I had my protien drink which went down fine but because it was a little later than usual I did not eat lunch and was going to do an early dinner and a protien drink later (my husband works nights so we are up late and I would have had time to have it long before going to bed.) I finished my protien drink around 1:00pm and made my dinner (again with turkey and vegetables) at 5:30pm. I ate about 8 bites of the turkey, all smaller than a dime, but right away I started to feel that tight feeling in my throat so I stopped. I will admit that those 8 bites, while the right size, chewed at least 30 times, and not dry, might have been eaten a little faster than I normally would have since I was talking to my husband about our current bathroom remodel and was not totally focusing on what I was doing. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes for it all to come back up. I waited about an hour and went back to liquid instead. I tried a protien drink but that came back as well so I again waited awhile then went to tomato Soup made with fat free milk and I was able to keep that down. However, this morning I got up and I have tried hot Water, hot tea, more soup, yogurt, and black coffee all in an attempt to get something down. I was able to drink a very small amount of hot tea when I took my Mucinex and keep that down but everything I have tried since then comes back up. I have looked at everything I am supposed to be doing and aside from last night possibly eating too fast I can't find anything out of order. Why would I be ok earlier in the week and then now have a problem? I do intend to call my doctor in the morning if this keeps up but I just wondered if anyone has had this happen after a fill and it just took a few days for the pouch/stomach to adjust and did not end up having to have anything taken out of the band or am I too tight? Sorry for the long post i was just trying to include as much detail as possible.

Does Any One Else Not Like The Feeling Of Food In Their Gastric Sleeve?
RhondaLynn replied to Shoppingbeemom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have enjoyed eating the food, but then after I eat I really wish I had not... . I have only slimmed once.. yuk... then this past Sunday we went to Cracker Barrel and I ate a few bites of fish, chewed really really well, when all of a sudden I felt like the food was backed up all the way to my mouth. I went to the bathroom and opened my mouth and out it came.. not really vomit.. more of a baby's spit up.. it just slid out. I felt better but also felt full. I really should not have felt full at that point. I also have to make myself eat, it taste good in my mouth but my stomach does not enjoy having it in there.... most of the time I'm not sick, but very full feeling. I am trying very hard to get all my Protein in.. I drink at least one Protein Drink a day and try to add Protein powder to my coffee and yogurt. This is just a journey we have to travel.. I am sure it will get better as our tummys heal! Rhonda -
Where are all my May Sleevers?
2blessed replied to sandirufophoto's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved may 22 and down 46lbs as of this morning. I have definitely had my bouts with vomiting and I'm nauseous at least once a day. I was cleared for all foods at 6 wks with the exception of breads, pastas, and rice. But that doesn't seem to matter because I can only tolerate protein shakes ( and I use tolerate loosely), cheese, and yogurt. I've tried every meat in every way possible (not fried) and it makes me sick! Can't do eggs either. I get walking and swimming in occasionally but cannot fairly say I'm actively exercising. Just don't feel I'm getting enough calories in to do that yet. I did have hiatal hernia repair at the time of surgery, and my nutritionist says that may have a lot to do with me not tolerating a lot at this point. Overall, I'm happy with my results. Getting 50-70g of protein in and I'm finally able to get my liquids in also. Taking my vitamins too. And counting down the days to eating somewhat normal again. -
So tired of protein shakes
Cherishthepast replied to deidre's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try adding unflavored Protein to your soups. I use unjury which I had preop and still almost 2 years later love. When I think I'm not getting enough protein (remember protein helps us not to look like sharpees when we loose the weight) anyway, I add the unflavored to soups and sometime yogurt and I love the chocolate with my coffee in the morning - makes a great mocha. From experience, I know that just drinking shakes can drive you mad - spice it up, look for recipes that you can use to incorporate the protein into. Checkout unjury.com they have a number of recipes for protein shakes, drinks... -
Scared To Gain Before First Fill!
kmt1973 replied to kmt1973's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cib w skim milk has about the same as a protein drink. My doc wants me to drink about 2 a day w yogurts, cream soups w skim milk, sf puddings. I guess I just have so many people knowing and watching to see how I do w this that I'm afraid to not lose. Plus in all honesty, I am not hungry. Thanks B52 that was encouraging. -
Surgery Scheduled For April 12Th!
NWgirl replied to Passionatehrt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jay Robb is usually said to be the best tasting whey Protein. I stocked up on a lot of broths before my surgery, and drank a minimal amount of them. I also stocked up on yogurt, which I was not able to eat fast enough. Definitely try the sugar free Jello pudding cups, they have some nice flavors. Make sure you have a heating pad and adult liquid tylenol. -
My family has given me a weird look or two when they see what I am eating. For example I love to have a scrambled egg and pour 1 or 2 tbsp of natural yogurt on it. Another one is some tuna with mayo and a hint of honey, I know mayo and honey wouldn't usually be considered diet food, but I only eat 2oz of the whole can. Do you find that you crave weird combinations?

3 Weeks Post-Op And A Stall Since Last Week
RossJL replied to tamou37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I noticed that my (almost 3 week) stall happened when I started incorporating food back into my diet! Just before 3 weeks I started having yogurt, refried Beans and scrambled eggs... Then BOOM... The weight loss stopped! I figured the body went into give me give me mode after not eating for almost 3 weeks and was trying to keep all those nutrients which caused a weight stall! Guess what I did yesterday?? I ate MORE! 3 meals! A full yogurt for Breakfast, as much refried beans as would fill my tummy without being over full (2 full spoons maybe a tad more) an iced coffee at Hastings and then about 15 beans out of a cup of Wendy's chili (beans and liquid only) then I weighed and tada.... 2.5 lb loss!!! Yep! I think I noticed the most inches lost was during the stall too! I have not yet freaked out about the sleeve, I just keep listening to my body and adjusting to what she is saying! -
Hi everyone. I had a gastric sleeve on September 12th 2017. In 9 days I lost 12 lbs and was ecstatic. Since my weigh in at the dr on 9.21.17 i have not lost 1lb! I am the exact same weight. I was put on soft foods on 9.22 and have been eating yogurt, eggs, chicken. Trying my hardest to get all my fluids, but averaging about 40 oz of fluid a day. Has anyone else experienced weight loss Plateau this close to the surgery date? It seems awfully soon to not be losing weight. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thank you. 18 days post op
Angel11 replied to LosingIsWinning's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m experiencing the same! My surgery was 09/21/17 on Thursday & I weighed myself this past Thursday (at 1 week post op) & I lost 10lbs. I go see my surgeon & dietitian for my post op appointment tomorrow. I just weighed myself an hour ago (in the evening & not right in the morning like I usually do) & weighed the same from 3 days ago. I’m allowed to eat creamed soups, yogurts, sugar free pudding, popsicles & protein shakes. I’m getting about 40oz only too. I’m a little down. Maybe this week will be better? Keep your chin up! We will succeed!! -

Day 2 Off Post Op...help...i Feel Like....
sandra07 replied to f1stborn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery yesterday as far as pain I feel good except for gas pain on my, left shoulder! I was fine till I went downstairs and smell food mom was cooking! Now I'm hungry and my stomach won't stop growling! Ima start eating some yogurt maybe that will help! -
Today's Day 7. I'm allowed to start full liquids, hot cereal, yogurt & cream soups today. And skim milk. I can have a cup of coffee. I actually sang Lionel Richie's 'Hello' to my coffee pot a few minutes ago. I am way too excited over coffee. I had some cream of wheat (for the first time in my life, actually) earlier and I feel fine. I don't feel nauseous or anything. The port site is a little bit sore. I sneezed this morning and had an "OMGWTF" pain moment. I think that's normal. My main incision left some blood spots on my shirt that I slept in where the first steri strip fell off (I think it came off too early). It's not a ton of blood, so I'm going to hold off on calling. I have an appointment on Wednesday, anyways. Yesterday (Day 6) was pretty good, aside from the aforementioned port pain. I actually went to the grocery store and managed to buy what I needed, yet not make it weigh more than a gallon of milk (the most weight I can lift). I had a friend come and move my TV BACK to my living room from my bedroom -- I moved the rest of the stuff (cable box, dvd player), piece by piece so it wasn't too heavy. The ONE friend (who is more an acquaintance I go to happy hour with than anything) out of the six that I asked. Five people who had told me 'if you need anything after your surgery, call!'. Well I texted and called. Nobody answered. See who comes and hangs out with you after YOUR surgery next time. Or who is there when you need a ride to the store or to the laundromat. I'm doing everything my damn self; figure out a way to do things without me constantly driving you around. I'm sorry, but I'm currently super disgusted with the people who are supposed to be my friends. End angry rant. My laundry basket also currently weighs less than a gallon of milk, so I think I'm going to do that at some point this week, too. Maybe on Wednesday after my appointment. I figure I'll already be out, I can get an oil change and get some laundry done. I'm basically "resting" (sitting around) at each of those places except when the laundry needs moved from the washer to the dryer and folded, so it's not like it's "heavy housework". Also, since when is vacuuming "heavy housework"? You're walking around, pushing something that pretty much moves on its own. And now that I've rambled on for 30 minutes, I'm going to drink my coffee.

Hello VSG Family, I am 6 days out and I restarted the full liquid today. I found a really great Greek Yogurt I enjoyed during my Pre-op diet, Fage' with the little fruit flavor contents but it has small/tiny chuncks of fruit. Any suggestions on yogurt choices I totally can't eat plain yogurt.
