  1. I’ve only lost between 39-41 in total including pre op. HW 256, SW 244, CW 215-217. I had a stall at 6 weeks and also gained 2 pds. I went from 215 to 217. Since then I have been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds. I do get my protein in but struggle with water intake. I average about 50 oz a day. My dr put my calories at 800-1000 a day, protein at above 80. Nut told me not to be concerned about fat or carbs at this point. I just started to work out so no muscle gain at this point. I am very frustrated. Anyone have a similar issue or any advice to give ?????

    5 month stall

Yeah, after the infamous Week 3 stall, stalls are sporadic and specific to the individual. It's normal, even though it's frustrating, especially when it's 30 days or longer, but keep focused on doing the right things such as tracking food, getting in your water, getting in the protein, and getting some exercise.
  3. Anybody else started at over 500 lbs?! Currently 9 weeks post op VSG and down 85 lbs! When did you notice your body changing?

    5 month stall

You can experience many stalls as you’re losing so you’re likely experiencing another one now. Frustrating I know. If it persists more than 4 weeks, check in with your dietician. Sometimes a small tweak to your diet can kick start your loss & also ensure you are still following your plan (it’s easy to get a little complacent as the months go by cause we think we have it all under control). A change to your exercise program (frequency, duration or activity) can also shake the stall. Good luck.
  5. If I eat too quickly I get discomfort, my restriction kicks in or worst case scenario the foamies & that’s the end of eating anything more even if I’m nowhere near eating my meal. So I still eat slowly 2 3/4 yrs out. Happily take 30-60 minutes to eat a meal. Helps to reduce that temptation to eat more & increase my attention on why I’m having that next bite. But that’s me.
  6. I was never given a limit for carbs. Just advised to keep my intake low so avoid as possible. (Though I was able to have rolled oats from purée.) I was told to consider fruit & vegetables not as a ‘carb’ but an important source of fibre & essential vitamins & nutrients that were to be eaten after protein if I was able. Plus most veg are pretty low in carbs. Fruit is a little more but still you can’t eat much those first few months. I started fruit at around the 2 month mark I think. As an afternoon snack but not every day - watermelon (fluid content was a bonus) & strawberries to begin. Added other choices as I progressed. Now I have blueberries every day at breakfast & another serve of fruit (various) a couple of times a week. Fruit is my sugar fix. 😉 My biggest challenge with fruit is eating it too quickly - all that juicy goodness - then I have discomfort & on some occasions my restriction kicks in which is damn annoying. I started vegetables from soft food - carrots, celery, onion, tomato & mushrooms in slow cooked soups & stews. Then I added a couple of steamed green beans, cabbage or a cauliflower floret with dinner once on solid food. Now I eat a decent serve of whatever vegetables I want for lunch & dinner.
  7. I did band to bypass (band out about 5 months before my bypass). Bypass is SO much better than band. Although I did very well with the band originally, it got to where I'd wake up choking on stomach acid even when I was mostly unfilled. For the bypass I was fortunate to have a very easy recovery. I followed my Surgeons orders exactly, especially in the first couple of months. Drink as much water as you can (I found if I sipped everytime someone on TV or around me did or at all commercial breaks it helped in the early days). I also did lots of premier protein shakes (and still do green smoothies with protein for breakfast quite often) Once healed and on "normal" diet I found meal prep was key. I don't like to eat a piece of meat and veggies, but I do well with casseroles or stews, so I'd find and make healthy meals, portion them out in microwaveable bowls. I'd do 2 or 3 different meals each week (freeze extras if needed) then I just have to grab and heat and I got the right amount and good macro's.
  8. I am getting RNY on 2/3/2022 in Denver CO. I had lap band in 2014 and worked for a few years but it was causing problems so had it removed in October, 2021 and now getting ready for this revision. I am anxious but nervous that I won't know what to eat, not eat and how fast/slow - I've been so distracted lately. I need to re-read my surgery handbook...

    5 month stall

I'm basically in a 5 month stall, my weight loss has been minimal the past few weeks. Right before, I went through a very quick weight loss period (16+ lbs in 5 weeks) after the last slow down. I'm just trying to ignore the scale and keep doing what I have been doing and aiming for the calorie levels flagged by my nutritionist. It is really frustrating but this too shall pass... or that's what I am telling myself.

    5 month stall

I don’t remember the specifics but I had several stalls along the way. If you are sticking with your plan you will start losing again.

    5 month stall

Hi all, I’m in month 5 and haven’t lost any weight this month- anyone else? Is this normal? My surgery weight was 353 and I’m not 279.

    Proper weighing of Halo Top?

Look at the nutrition label on the package (I know, it's ice cream, and we're not interested in its' nutrition!) I will tell you something like a serving is 2/3 cup, which might be 90g for a cheap ice cream with a lot of air whipped into it, or maybe 130g for a premium ice cream with a lot of butter fat in it,) and that there are 3 servings in that pint. Use that weight for your figuring. If you only want a quarter of the pint, then multiply that gram figure for a 1/3 pint serving by 3/4 (Uggg, fractions!) or 75%.
  13. Def go see your doctor but I was a MESS for two weeks post surgery. I was so dizzy and weak and i was still hungry and just all around miserable. One thing that helped me was get some broth that has some fat it in. I am veg so my sister made seafood broth with coconut milk, but chicken or beef broth would likely work. I immediately started feeling more like myself. After about 3 weeks I was much improved. I'm sorry you are feeling so rotten. It's a big shock to the system.
  14. AGREED^^^^. Building muscle takes a lot of time and a lot has to do with our diet. It is even harder to build muscle when in a calorie deficit. For me its taken a while to figure out my body and the calories where i can can muscle but not weight. But thats a much slower process then just eating in a calorie surplus and trying to bulk quick. I also only work out 5-6 times a week and 90 minutes at the most. I mainly do crossfit. Crossfit is for everyone if youd like to try! But regardless of what youre doing, consistency is key. Keep going and take pictures weekly so you can see changes!! Youve got this!

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

HI LOVELY GIRL!!! I did not, unfortunately due to COVID all non emergent surgeries are postponed and I was just told last week they are looking at April for rescheduling! I'm frustrated but hopeful. I am so glad you are doing well!! Wishing you all the best!!!! ❤️
  16. I'm scheduled for my VSG on February 2nd. I'm almost a week into my pre-op diet and managing okay. One of my challenges is that I live in the Netherlands as my husband works here and I don't speak Dutch super well. The post-op guidance here is also different from what I've read online for North America and the Mexico clinics so it's a little harder to use online resources. The foods Dutch people regularly eat are different than I'm used to from North America so this might be one of the reasons. For example the diet for the first 2 weeks post op is called a high-fat liquid diet where it suggests a low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese for lunch, 1 dairy product for mid morning and mid afternoon snack and for dinner pureed potato, meat and veg, followed up with another dairy product for snack after dinner. After that diet for 2 weeks they suggest building up to solids.

    Proper weighing of Halo Top?

The container lies. LOL! 😀 I'm finding the same thing with Skinny Pop popcorn. The container says it has 6 servings of 3 3/4 cups per serving. But I only get 3 1/2 servings out of it when I pour it into measuring cups. I think the packaging is deceptive.
  18. I am going in this morning for the sleeve. I was good up till this past Monday and Wed where I always in complete freak out Mode. I talked to a couple of people who have had the surgery and that put my mind at ease. I have been good and confident the rest of the week. Remember you are choosing this surgery to take control back. To get Healthier for a long life ahead of you. Try to wrap your head around that and you will be in better head space. You just have to get through the pre diet which I breezed through losing 15lbs and the first few weeks. My people say it gets much better and it’s a decision you will not regret especially after you see your numbers go down. Good luck to you
  19. Looking for advice, will try to be brief. Thank you for allowing me to join your community! As the title explains, I have had two operations in the last 12 years. I have had issues with alcohol in the past which led to my revision. Anyway, I will complete a 'my story' post soon. Today I am trying to determine if what I am experiencing is normal or not. Thank you, in advance, for your candid advice. I developed GERD-like symptoms about nine months ago. I tried to moderate it with diet (less spicy / tomato), a few rounds of Prilosec. About seven months ago I gave up all alcohol in-part due to the painful symptoms. I had greatly moderated from my two bottle a day heyday, but I still drank. I am proud of my progress, but meetings may be in my future. At three months, Dr. ordered an endoscopy. I had the procedure October 30, 2021. Results showed that I was inflamed, but no ulcers. 'Just stay on Prilosec, forever if you have to' is the advice I received. After endoscopy, I decided to give up all carbonated drinks (I was hooked on about 100+ ounces a day of Diet Dr. Pepper). My go-to drink is now water. Also have added a lot of unsweetened iced tea and some coffee. A few days after New Year, my appetite started to decline. Just the thought of food was making me not feel well. I work from home and I fell into a habit of: one yogurt in the AM, protein drink at noon if hunger strikes, then just maybe 10 bites of anything around 4pm. Dinner at 7, maybe 20 bites over two hours. Hunger pains come on strong at times, but go away fast with 2-4 bites of anything.. As of today, Jan 23, my appetite is still just about 30% / 40% of what it was. I still find myself feeling like I have to 'force' myself to eat sometimes. Nothing sounds or tastes very good. I had a colonoscopy in December. Came back normal with one non-issue polyup (sp). Last week, I ran out of Prilosec. I decided to see if maybe I could get away with an as-needed solution. Big mistake. For the last three nights I have been awakened with extreme pain in my stomach. I have been taking Pepcid and Rolaids / Tums as needed. I plan to restart Prilosec tomorrow. Not sure why my stomach is still on fire??? I have a rather bland meat and potato diet. I quit alcohol and all carbonated drinks. Maybe a liquid fast and 100 Hail Mary's? This is my theory about my appetite issue: I think giving up the pop has resulted in far less bloating in my small stomach. Perhaps this has allowed it to heal back to a normal, or less inflamed, size. I cannot eat as much, but if I space out my eating, I'm sort of fine. I'm not sure about the mental aspects of this situation or how they corollate in parallel to the physical issues. However, the last time I felt this way (loss of appetite, could barely eat) was just before my emergency revision. Thankfully I have not developed the abdominal pains of that episode, just the eating issue. Just for context: I am a 47 year old male, about 260 pounds. I worry about constriction due to scar tissue, I was warned to look out for this. Thank you for any thoughts or advice! Matt

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

I think I started eating fruit once I was in the regular food stage which, I believe, started about 6 weeks after surgery. Then my plan called for the following: Avoid eating over 1000 the first year. 1000 calorie meal plan: 7 meat/protein servings 1 milk serving 3 starch servings 2 fruit servings 2 non starchy veggie servings 2 healthy fat servings Then it gave page long examples of the types of foods and their serving size for each category. Says for fruit (since you specifically asked about that): Unless otherwise noted below (which it was referring to the large list of fruits on the page) one serving of fruit is 1/2 cup fresh fruit or 1/4 cup of dried fruit. As of now, and as per my nutritionist (since being in a VERY long stall), I am eating 800 cals a day (sometimes go to 1000), 50 grams of carbs (sometimes under, sometimes over but never more than 75), and 70 grams of protein. However, lately I've been upping my protein greatly, around 100-125 grams a day, and I do believe it's starting to help me break my 2.5+ month long stall.
  21. Kurt, my man! Easy! You'll get there. Aside from the physical stuff so excellently covered by the kind people above - take a deep breath. You just had a huge part of a hormone-producing organ taken out - consider you could be recalibrating hormones and this will affect your mental state. Upside for the guys; in a few weeks or months, you'll experience the male post-bariatric testosterone boost. It'll be like you're 16 again, for better and worse. Just watch yourself from the outside a bit, take a deep breath, follow your plan, get your fluids, get your sleep, laugh at the comical stuff we experience on this ride. And yeah, strap yourself in, it's a hell of a ride. A good one, usually.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I am tracking everything in myfitness pal. The least I have eating in a day is a little over 500 calories and the most right under 800 and I get at least 60 grams of protein even though I know it is supposed to be a minimum of 90. It is just so difficult! My doctor said it is normal to just intake that many calories at first but I don’t know why the stall in weight loss. It is so weird and I am so discouraged! I know it will get better though! It just has to!
  23. I’m starting to feel this way. The scale has gone up or down 3-4 pounds for about two months now, and I think this may be the happy point for my body. It is within my surgeon’s zone of success, actually towards the lower end. And to the original post, it is hard to get in the right headspace to lose those last few pounds, but even if it occurred, the question is, could we maintain it forever?

    January Surgery buddies

I am postop day 6 and I’ve been achy. I am on a full liquid diet now. I will be on it for a week. Today has been rough. I’ve been very emotional and have been doing a little too much today. I know it will get better. Everyone who’s going through it keep pushing forward.

    Soup and Drinking

Ah soup, how i miss eating it the “normal” way. I’m 3+ years post op and i still have to eat soup in stages: first slurp up all the liquid/broth, then I eat all the solid bits. If I don’t, i’m guaranteed to get super full, super fast and likely barf. BUT…I’ve read of folks on here who have no issue having soup with liquid and solid at same time. Best way to find out is to try. But go slow if you tend to be a barfer like me! Good Luck! ❤️
