Inspiring Words

What words, phrases, cliches have you heard that resonated with your weight loss journey? "Words are units of energy" is something I heard once. I started using that phrase when I have struggled with journalling. The more I write about and talk about my feelings and what is going on with me, the more energy is expended. "Tears weigh more than fat." I heard this on a weight loss reality show recently. Being able to feel my feelings and shed some tears is also critical for me. Anyone else have something that works for them?

May Sleevers...

First Dr. appointment was 03/20/12 and I weighed 278. May 16th day of surgery weight was 265. As of 07/14 I weighed 228. A total 50 lbs lost!! I only weigh once a week on saturdays to keep from getting frustrated because I vary so much.
4. I'm only four days in to two weeks of full liquids prior to June 8 sleeve date and met with surgeon Thursday for prevealuation, approvals, anesthesiologist etc., and I already lost five pounds! Everything's a go and for those of you who are struggling with 'time' waiting, uncertainty, self doubt...hang in there. I've been second guessing myself for months and now it's ten days away. Sure it's hard giving up food emotionally but to gain my health, comfort, confidence and energy will be worth it! I'm so used to not losing weight in the past (or gaining) I was elated to see a few pounds gone in a couple days. Commit, dedicate and be confident. It IS possible ????

Surgery First Or Baby First?

I was also struggling with this issue. In my case I am 39. I have a 2 yr old and would have like to be pregnant already but it hasn't happened yet. For all I know maybe i am not getting pregnant because of my weight. I decided to go ahead with my surgery on Dec 10th. My surgeon encouraged me to have the surgery first so I will have a healthier pregnancy. Optimally he would like me to wait at least a year to get pregnant but when I expressed my concerns about being 39 already, he said if all goes well I might be able to start trying after 6 months. I just hope I don't miss out on having another baby because I chose to do this surgery first.
7. I have been told so many different things about what's the best decision: have sleeve first and lose weight then have my second child or visa Versa. At this point I have decided to have the surgery, lose the weight, then have a second baby. I am just very scared that I will gain back lots of weight during pregnancy. Does anyone have insight/been through this that can shed some light for me?! Thanks so much
8. Ok.. A little background During my first unplanned, later in life pregnancy (I was about to turn 40, back in 2013) this particular nurse practitioner suggested that I terminate the pregnancy. I was floored. I'm am a married woman in a stable relationship and this suggestion was way out of line. Unfortunately this pregnancy did not turn out good and we lost the baby. I should've run then but I didn't. In 2014 I found myself expecting again.. Shocker because I have PCOS and in the 20 years of marriage at the time I had only ovulated a couple of times. We never used protection. Which wasn't our best plan, I know.. I was getting excited, we made it past the first few weeks. But Sadly this also did not turn out well and we lost another baby. At my follow up appointment this same nurse practitioner was rude yet again..in her manner of suggesting permanent birth control do to my weight and age. I love my doctor..she is wonderful, her beside manner was the best during my difficult trials. Id hate to leave the practice but today was just another dig. It's been a few years since I've been to the Drs. Since my last miscarriage. So I didn't think much about who I saw. That is until she walked into the room and all these emotions came flooding back. Of course you have to update your medical records. This included my surgery. She saw the scars during my exam so there wasn't any hiding it. It was her comments about my weight loss that really ticked me off today. "So you're BMI is coming down. That's good but you have more to go". I'm not looking for a pat on the back from medical professionals but I've lost almost 60 freaking pounds since I last saw her and my more to go is 25 lbs. If I stay I'm definitely requesting to see my Dr and not this Nurse practitioner. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Thinking out loud

After 19 months I've only just had my first fill a few weeks ago. I am one of the small precentage of banders who had complications. (Not sure what that was about) Still After all these months I believe this was a good choice for me. I was one who had been underweight for the first half of my life. I only breifly was at a normal weight. The rest found me at 279 lbs at my heaviest. a few persons I know had by-pass surgery. I'd even cared for by-pass patients during my early nurseing years. I knew that was not for me. This banding thing, after musch time on the net and my PCP's cry of too many "pre" stuff to name. Another diet, more shots and pills were not going to do it. An accident had slowed me down physically and mentally. I gained back the 45 lbs I'd lost on my last plan and swing dance class plus a few more. After surgery I lost 100 lbs because I was sick then gained back 20lbs once I could eat again. Now. I get to use my tool, learn new coping skills and cooking methods. I 'm learning to understand my relationship with food and make changes to be healthy for the rest of my life. This is wonderful. I love my surgeon. He confrenced with all my doctors during my illness and I count him as my friend. I'm grateful for the person who created this web site and I'm most thankful for a chance to live a truely abundant life. :frown:

PLEASE HELP! Been in Plateau for 4 months!

I don't understand it myself and it's very frustrating to put so much effort and work into it and not see any results. It makes me break down and cry sometimes but I keep going. But I will tell you that I stick to 700-860-some calories a day. Sometimes I'll make it to 900. I write EVERYTHING that goes into my mouth in a food journal and I mean EVERYTHING. Ever since I stalled back in July I have become extremely strict with my diet and sometimes have to force myself to work out as much as I do but I get it in.You have a right to be suspicious if what I'm saying is true but let me tell you that I'm being completely honest with you and completely honest with myself. Even in the liquid phase and mushy phase of my first few months with lap band I was unable to lose weight. Back then I was eating nothing but chicken broth, cream of chicken Soup, sugar free Jello, then moved on too mushy foods such as re-fried Beans, mashed potatoes, etc and was still unable to lose a pound with that kind of diet. I kept my portions to half a cup and 1 cup. I have had my thyroid checked because my grandmother had hypothyroid as well as two of my aunts on my mother's side. My thyroid workup always comes back normal. The only thing that the doctor has told me is that I have metabolic syndrome. But a funny thing did happen one time at my doctor's office. My doctor divides his time between his private practice and the hospitals around my city and he had hired a nurse practitioner. I went one day and he wasn't there so I saw this nurse practitioner and based what I told her about not being able to lose weight she prescribed thyroid medication and I picked it up at the pharmacy and I was happy that I finally had the answer to all my weight problems, but 2 weeks later while on that medication, my doctor called all of his patients that the nurse practitioner saw during that time and asked them to come in to re-evaluate her work and he told me I wasn't even hypo thyroid according to any of my blood workups. I asked him about the nurse practitioner and he told me he had to fire her because in his absence she was diagnosing people with illnesses and conditions that they didn't even have and prescribing medications they didn't even need that could also be harmful to them. So he took me off the thyroid medication and explained my numbers to me and told me I had no thyroid problems. But maybe I should see a specialist such as an endocrinologist just in case.

Drinking During Meals

I don't know how detrimental this habit is to our weight loss, but if I can break this habit, ANYBODY! can do it. I was a hardcore "must have a drink with every meal" person preop. It was to the point that no matter how hungry I was I never sat down to eat without a drink. And if the glass got low or ran out, I would get up in the middle of my meal to get more. Water generally did not suffice either. Amazingly, I just stopped cold turkey after surgery. I read someone's advice to not have anything to drink next to me when eating. I started out that way when I hit the puree stage and haven't looked back. I don't order drinks with my meals when eating out. It's easy in that situation to get a water brought to the table later if you're there long enough. I don't fix a drink at home until my 30 minutes have passed. I only take a sip immediately after eating when I need to swallow vitamins or medication. If the food is getting stuck in your throat you may not be chewing thoroughly enough. If drinking with your meals is allowing you to eat more, I would seriously consider working on this habit now. It may not be a big deal soon after surgery when you can't eat much, but when your volume increases and you get closer to maintenance it could make those last pounds much harder to lose.
12. I have a question! With Tri Care do you have to more than 100 lbs over weight before they will consider you for the surgery? I have Tri Care Prime and I am going to call my doctor on Monday to make the appointment. I want this surgery and reading this about Tri Care makes me feel better about going to my doctor and requesting a referrel. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! Kathy

six month medical weight loss

Thank you rosasmotherer, my husband and I just got back off of a 8 days 7 nights cruise....I know I have gain 2 pounds
15. My insurance requires that I do a 6 month medical weight loss plan first. My first appointment is this monday. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if after the 6 months they do the surgery even if there is weight loss? If so then why do they recommend you do the 6 months first?

Ready, Set, Go!

Thank you both. I guess there is no easy way around this.I am enjoying the weight that has come off so far though
17. I am seriously considering the sleeve. I am 35 yo, 5' tall and weigh about 170 right now. My heaviest was 244 in 2003. It has taken me years to lose the weight and actually got done lower last year to 130 but that is with a VERY strict diet and exercise regimen. I am a single mom with three small children and my profession is very stresssful. I just can't take the massive weight gain/loss constantly. My mom had gastric segmentation 16 years ago and it has been a blessing for her. Our family is obese, no way around it. I have BCBS Federal and understand after calling that they do cover this procedure. I know with a low BMI (ha low, meaning I am obese, not considered morbidly obese) my chances of approval may not be good. I also have asthma, joint pain, horrible knees, and added stress because I can't seem to lose weight anymore. Also, I used to be 5'2", I have scoliosis and am afraid the weightdoes affect that, I have back pain when standing alot. I don't know where to start, how do I find a dr? Anyone have any advice or words of wisdom in my situation?

Heav85, I too have to go thru 6 months, and I am thru my 4th month, I think it is way to long, all kind of things start running thru your mind. six month medical weight loss

Thanks so much for the responses they are so helpful. I asked a friend who has a friend going through this at the same hospital that i'm going to. And she said that I would have a few pounds I could lose in that period of time. I'm assuming from this statement that if I lose more than they want me to then they won't do it... I'm right at the 40 at 40.7... I was when I applied for this atleast... Not sure if I get to much below that if they won't do it. Another question. Lets say I lose like 40 pounds, highly unlikely I know, that won't do the surgery then right? I mean i've lost all that weight lol... Does anyone know what kinda meal and exercise plan they put you on? I don' thave the money to go to the gym.

Girdle

I wear a panty girdle, brand name "Control It" bought at Kohl's, everyday for work. It just makes me look better in my clothes, and I like the feeling of being pulled in that it gives me. I have a huge surgical hernia going down the lower abdomen from three previous surgeries (they always cut in the same place), and it helps it not hurt as much. I was also sent home from the lapband surgery with an abdominal binder, and I put that on sometimes at home for extra support. I've worn the binders off and on around the house for several years, since I get one every time they cut into my abdomen. As soon as I lose a bit more weight, the hernia is getting fixed as part of an "abdominal wall reconstruction". It'll be better than a tummy tuck, since insurance should pay.
22. Update: I was able to see my documents on myuhc.com and weight loss surgery is EXCLUDED... Has anyone had any luck with asking your company to change the plan so this is covered? I work for a small company. Would it just cost the company more or would it cause everyone to pay more each month? original message:
We just switched to UHC at work... Is there a way to check my benefits online?

We have UHC Choice Plus. Where would the info be?

The Easy Way Out

You said the word I always use, "tool". This is a tool. The surgery is just a stepping stone on the pathway to weight loss for all of us!! People will only know what we go through when they walk a mile (or 20) in our shoes. Don't let them get you down! You have far more people who are supportive. I wish as human beings we could remember more of the positive things people say and let go of the negative more easily!! I wish this for myself because I have really struggled with the co-worker who told me face-to-face that I took the easy way out. WEIGHT LOSS IS TOUGH NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT!!! That's how I feel about it. Thank you for posting StrangelyNormal!!

Compulsive09

Hello my name is Malika I go by the name complulsive09. My bestfriend gave me that name. She gave me that name because I worry about everything. (lol) I always worried about my weight but didnt really know what to do. I did all the things everyone did to lose weight but didn't really know how to eat and what to eat. My highest weight was 303 lbs. I currently weigh 250 lbs. I was banded 6/16/09.(280 lbs. day of sugery) I lost 40 lbs. with the band. But currently just gaind 10 lbs. I been doing this for the past 2 months of ganing and losing. This band is a tool not a cure me. I love this band it was the best thing I could have done for myself. I love the results. Everyday is a challenge. Some days I wish the band would do all the work. I come to realize that I am not one of the ones who can just cut back and the weight will come off. I HAVE TO WORKOUT!!! But thats okay I love to workout. (when I go lol). Okay let me tell you how it is living with the band. The surgery was not a walk in the park but I would do it all over again. I CAN STILL EAT EVERYTHING. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN'T EAT. Food gets stuck if I eat to fast. But I can't eat as much as I was able to before I was banded. And that is why I got the band. I laugh at the amount of food I eat now. (and my friends laugh also) The one thing I don't like about this band the 5/30 rule drinking 5 mins before you eat and 30 mins after you eat. I sometimes think oh I waited long enough after eating and think oh I can drink now and OUCH. Today I decided I was going to continue my journey on this site. I use this site to keep me going. I needed to do something different. I tried to write in a journal. That was not working for me. I need feed back!!
