    Regret?

No regrets. Coming up on 6 weeks post op. No gerd from my vsg after the revision to bypass. Weight loss satisfactory. Equivalent to the sleeve. I just broke a one week stall, and dropped another 1.8 lbs. What is interesting is I had heard horror stories about "never trust a fart" lol and bowel problems. I almost decided against it but surgeon said I had to fix my gerd... But maybe cause I no longer have severe gerd, everything is literally normal. I feel no difference than before any of my WLS except I get full after a few bites. Having said that, I am early on and hope this positive trend of health continues. I can handle stalls and working to get the weight off but am always scared of leaks and other serious complications down the road. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I've looked through some other past posts, mostly 3-5+ years ago, and Googled to my fingers were numb, so I'm going to post this here and see if anyone has thoughts/suggestions. I'm just about 6-weeks post op, great weight loss, and was cruising right along until last Tuesday 9/7/21. I ended up in the ER for what I thought was a blood clot in my right leg. After a sonar, they assured me I had no clot, but I did have moderate cellulitis. The doctor put me on generic Bactrim 800 2x/day, and Cefalexin 500 x4/day, for 7 days. I have had cellulitis once before pre-op, in the opposite leg, and was on a much smaller treatment of antibiotics (just the Bactrim), and within 3 days (out of the 7 day treatment) it was practically gone! So, when this past Friday rolls around and my right leg isn't better at all I start to freak out b/c it's been 4 days of double the amount of antibiotics I've had for the same issue in the past, and when I put my sock on it still cause me to "yelp" in pain, not to mention the entire shin/left calf in hot and swollen. I call my PCP and he graciously humors me and puts me on the Oral Liquid version of Bactrim, for 10 days b/c I think the tablets aren't being absorbed. So, I've now had 6 doses of the Bactrim Liquid antibiotic, and I'm on my last day of Cefalexin, but really only feel like the leg is maybe, 10-15% better than it was a week ago? I will say that I do not have a fever, so I don't think I'm septic or anything, but it's getting in the way of my exercise and weight loss during the peak period of time when I should be working towards losing as much as possible. Should it still be this bad? Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions or things I should talk to my PCP or bariatric surgeon about? Do you think it will just take longer and I should hold my horses and take a chill pill? 😅 Thanks for your time and thoughts everyone. -Josh

    Regret?

I am 5 weeks post op and have had zero side effects other than pain if I eat too much or too fast. I also have not lost a single pound in 2 weeks. I'm feeling very discouraged and wish I had never put my body through this because I'm having no results.

    Fluctuations

Weight can have a 1-5 pound fluctuation on the daily. I was so mad about that last week because at one point I was up 7 pounds (which is over the 5 pound average) and got up to 185 last week. Of course it turns out a lot of that was due to inflammation from my arthritis (and doing physical therapy), but turns out it was also because of my monthly because after that started I got right back down to 178 (178.2 if you want my EXACT weight)... which is what I am today. Still... I've been in a stall for nearly 4 weeks now and I really do hope I'm not in maintenance. I would like to at least see 170 before I get there. I'd say don't stress about the daily fluctuations, but from experience if you continue to hold onto that extra weight more than two days in a row you'll definitely stress about it.

    Carbonation?

I asked my surgeon to explain to me in a way that would make me understand .. as to WHY I couldn't have sparkling water. Not diet soda or regular soda, just plain water in my soda stream. He smiled sheepishly and told me he didn't have an explanation. So now about once a week I'll have some sparkling water and I sip it slowly and love it. I personally can handle it.

    Carbonation?

Carbonation and straws are two (of many) things you’ll hear both sides about here. Generic answer: follow your surgeon/doctor. I drink a LOT of zero calorie carbonated drinks, have since about week four and haven’t had a single issue. The stomach stretching thing doesn’t make sense to me because the liquid and gas are both fluids and as anyone here will tell you fluids pretty much just pass through your empty stomach unobstructed (and I never feel any more or less “full” from carbonated drinks as I do from non-carbonated).. I’d say be extra careful if you’ve eaten in the past hour though.. but I down several cans of stuff a day and after 15 months my capacity is still the same as it was at week 15: one egg fills me up two makes me feel like I gorged myself. Don’t even get me started on the no straws thing…
  7. Yes, after day 3 it has been easier. I mean i still dream about food, but at least I'm not miserable lol. One week down and I am down 15.2 pounds!

    Fluctuations

I only weigh once a week. The day I had my surgery was 8/16. So for me it's every Monday. It had not occurred to me to weigh every day [emoji848] Sent from my SM-N981U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Burping

It gets better. I am right at 2 weeks post op and I don't have quite as much gas. But...think about it. Your stomach is smaller so there is less volume to hold any gas created, so you will burp a little more than you may have before. I am not really experiencing anything too out of control as I go into normal type foods.

    Fluctuations

Even 3 1/2 months out All week I was going up and down a half pound - I thought maybe I hit my first stall; then I dropped 2 pounds this weekend, my weigh in day for tracking is Monday's - so I was still down 2 on what I thought was a lousy week.

    6 week PO Food

3 1/2 months out - I'm still have 4 tsp of benefibre a day! (I ran out and did not take for 2 days - I learned I need it!) At 6.5 weeks I was allowed "regular" foods. I have not had issue with any vegetable I have ate. Probably the first thing I had - but during the soft food stage at 3 1/2 weeks was pickles.

    September Ops

I’m doing pretty well. I definitely still have pain at the incision sites and abdomen in general but it gets better everyday. I am in full liquids for 2 weeks!! 😩 That is definitely the worst part for me!! Glad to hear you’re doing well!! 😊
  13. On vacation for two weeks since yesterday. The weather? Ok, let's not talk about the weather...

    Fluctuations

Also the famous three week stall (not always right at three weeks), glycogen storage (needs lots of Water for the body to store it)… if the scale fluctuations bother you there are a few options… one, just weigh once a week. Do it after your morning bathroom routine so it’s consistent with your daily pattern.. two: if you want to weigh each day take today’s weight and subtract it from your weight seven days prior. This will give you a rolling average of your weekly loss, it’s handy for spotting true stalls / slow downs etc.
  15. only about 30% of RNYers dump, and for those who do, it can be prevented by limiting or avoiding sugar (which we all should be doing ANYWAY). A minority of dumpers dump on fat, so they can prevent it by limiting their fat intake (for most dumpers, though, it's sugar - or rather, too much of it at one setting - that sets it off). I've never dumped - and many of us haven't. I wouldn't call it a horror story, to be honest. It's mostly preventable, and again, a majority of us don't dump. blood sugar issues: Not sure what exactly you're referring to. Some people develop reactive hypoglycemia (RH), but like dumping, that can be controlled. I have it. I just have to eat something every 3-4 hours - and if I eat a carb, I have to eat a protein with it. Haven't had an episode it probably three years. So it's not a horror story - it's kind of a minor issue that can be controlled. In my mind, dumping in RNY patients (30% of them) vs acid reflux in sleeve patients (also 30% of them) is kind of a wash. Although at least dumping can be controlled. RH is a lot less common, but again, it's largely controllable. I've been really happy with my RNY - I'd do it again in a heartbeat! P.S. there seems to be a Wisconsin theme going on here...

    Thinking about Lap Band surgery

I am one week after lapband removal after 19 years. I had to have an iron infusion as my iron was extremely low. Apparently iron deficiency and in many cases nutritional deficiency is a consequence of bariatric surgery (good to be aware of) as no one tells you this. I had very little weight loss on lapband surgery. I am so glad to be rid of it. Very sick of the intermittent choking and vomiting. Very annoying. I wish everyone all the very best on their decisions - I think I would rethink lapband surgery (unless it has changed dramatically in the last 19 years). Good luck.

July 22 surgery date - Revision from VSG to RNY

Hi there! I am so sorry for the late reply.......life has been challenging this past month. Did you have your surgery in August? I hope you did and that all is well. Please let me know. I am doing well....still no reflux! My weight loss is much slower than I would like. I weighed 225 on July 15th when I started the pre-op liquid diet and lost 6 lbs. On surgery day, July 22nd, I weighed 218. So I have lost 18lbs in 7 weeks and a total of 25lbs. My surgeon reminded me that my goal is to lose a total of 50-60lbs so I've actually lost about 50% of my goal. That perspective turned around my thinking and I am more optimistic. I am currently in a 9 day stall. Hopefully I will enter the 100's soon. I am going to increase my water intake, exercise and protein this week and pray the scale moves downward.
  18. So one thing I’ve learned is that the dont’s vary WIDELY between each Bariatric doctor/clinic. The do’s are pretty much the same; mainly, focus on protein and water consumption. The dont’s and other instructions after surgery for me (per my doctor) includes NO ALCOHOL; no drinking from straws; no chewing gum; no carbonated drinks; no caffeine; no beef/red meat for the first year; deconstruct every meal; every meal to be low cal; no drinking liquids for 15 mins before and 30 mins after a meal; chew your food for 30 seconds before swallowing; eat your meal within 30 minutes; exercise/weights at least 3x a week. TAKE THE PRESCRIBED VITAMINS EVERY DAY WITHOUT FAIL - especially thiamin. Soooo - I’ve lost 140lbs - sleeved December 2019. ONE OF THE TOP BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE. Wish I did it sooner. I struggle now with the type of foods I put into my body - I have a hankering for chocolate and cookies. 😩 BUT! 99% of the time it’s because I’m bored and will mindless eat. I have to reel it back in. It will always be a recurring process for me.

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

Good luck at your appointment, and congrats on breaking through your stall and hitting 20 pounds!!! I do think there's something of a sweet spot when it comes to eating as few calories as we all are. We just have to find it then ride that puppy as we shed the pounds!

    Blue Shield of CA PPO

I have BS of CA PPO and also got the gastric sleeve. If you have a bmi of 40+, then you qualify. If you have a bmi of 35 with at least one comorbidity, then you will qualify too. They require a psychological evaluation, nutritional support, proof that you have attempted to lose weight in the past, particularly within the past 3 - 6 months (primary doctor can provide that information - pretty much just showing weight loss and weight gain again). I also had to do multiple tests, but that was due to my surgeon's requirements, not insurance. My surgeon's office told me that Blue Shield of CA is one of the easier insurances to work with. They don't make you have to jump through as many hoops as other insurances. Once my paperwork was submitted along with all my requirement documentation, I got approved in less than a week. Here is a link to a pdf on Blue Shield of California's website. It shows the requirements for weight loss surgery, to help give a more thorough idea. https://www.blueshieldca.com/bsca/bsc/public/common/PortalComponents/provider/StreamDocumentServlet?fileName=PRV_PA_Bariatric_Surgery.pdf

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

My stall started after only two weeks and thankfully broke yesterday on my one month surgiversary, putting me at exactly 20 pounds down for the month. I know it's not the most but at least it's something. Tomorrow I have a follow up with the PA and nutritionist and should get cleared for solid food and workouts beyond walking. I should also be able to take baths again and I cannot wait! I'm still confused about how much to eat since the nutritionist wouldn't give me a calorie limit at the two week appointment. I've just been eating enough to get into the protein range but that ends up being 400-500 calories most days and it sounds like most people are eating more, so I'm really going to try to get clarity tomorrow on that. Hope everyone is doing well and pushing through their stalls!

    Starting the process

My insurance only requires 3 months to have the scheduled appts, lab work, Nutritionist, psychologist, endoscopy, and vascular appts. I received most of my labs back already. I’m so ready to get my date though. My husband told me to take the required time off for recovery. We’re already making plans to prepare financially by paying things up for 2 months. My next change is to start walking 3 days a week for 39 minutes. I work in a hospital 5 days a week and while at work I will work to go up and down all 6 flights every night. Being that I work night, my meal times are different. However, I’ve noticed that I do much better when I’m prepared. I usually bring lots of fruits and veggies with me to snack on.

    Newbie

I had lots of second thoughts. I was a lower BMI and I kept wondering if I should try one last time to lose the weight myself. But reality is I did just try one last time (I just didn’t know it was the last time) and I stalled and gained it all back as usual. Post surgery I didn’t have any regrets at all. Probably because I didn’t have a lot of pain of complications and I can eat everything I did before. Some people do have regrets immediately post op but that goes away the first month or so for most people.
