What's with all the "diet" food?

Hi Pac-woman - I can eat a rotisserie chicken thigh plus about 1/4 cup of veggies and sometimes about 1/3 cup of brown rice. Sometimes I have to pause for 10 mins or so before I finish, but I can easily in that in about a half hour. I will caveat though, that I was a band to sleeve revision, and so my sleeve is just a tiny big bigger than most. My surgeon used a 40 bougie vs I think 36 that she uses usually for virgin sleevers. Other surgeons use even smaller ones than that. I didn't have trouble getting in liquids my first week, so you may be different from me still when you're 7 months out, like I am now. But I'm quite sure you'll be able to eat much more easily! And in the end you may have an easier time than I will maintaining your weight loss, so it should all work out and be worth it in the end.
  3. I had the lap band surgery done in 2008. It never worked as promised for anything. It never caused me to have satiety. It just made it painful to eat. My surgeon was inexperienced and put a 4cc band in but told me it was 10cc so I was confused at to why 3cc of fill was causing me so many problems. He ordered an upper GI and found out why and immediately took out 1.5 cc (nothing was getting through). He had unrealistic expectations for weight loss (wanted 10-15 lbs in 3 weeks post surgery and without any fill). I left him and went to another doctor at another hospital who was satisfied with my weight loss at that point. However, I always had left shoulder pain (my original doctor never heard of this), I never felt satisfied, none of my vital statistics improved, and neither did my back pain. So, after a major stuck episode in 2009 that took me to the ER, all the fill was removed. And I only went back to the doctor I think once after that - haven't been back in years. I still get some stuck episodes but have learned how to make myself throw up. Very unpleasant. And the left shoulder pain. And the ability to eat the wrong but not the right foods. So, I want this band out and am taking the initial steps to do so, however, I don't know if I want to go through another surgery - gastric sleeve - at this time. After all the failures of the band I don't know if I have the motivation to not eat this type of food or that type (e.g. bread, Pasta, rice - you know all the stuff the band has problems with). I am 64 years old and although so many say the sleeve is what they thought the band would be - I am not sure at my age I can go through all this again. How much follow up is there to the sleeve? Do you lose your hair? Do you get stuck? Are there foods you can't eat (not because of calories but because of the sleeve)? I'm not looking for any easy way out - but I have to be honest that my motivation isn't what it was 7 years ago due to all the disappointments already. Any suggestions?
  4. No regrets here, but I couldn't tolerate fill in my band for years, so I was essentially unbanded when I had my revision. I've heard that for some people it's a struggle to get away from eating the slider foods they got into the habit of eating with a finicky band - and these same foods can prevent success with the sleeve. So it's important to make a fresh start with the sleeve and get into the habit of eating dense proteins and veggies.

    Looking for a surgery buddy

Hi. I'm a revision as well (11/6/14). The pain was more significant than post lapbamd for sure but the surgery was much more invasive as well. I will tell that it does get much better around week 4. My weight loss seemed slow in the beginning as well but I seemed to be more swollen after this surgery and because of the pain the first few weeks there wasn't a ton of exercise going on for me. I honestly thought something was wrong. I felt pressure and a pulling sensation that was quite annoying the first few weeks. I am just a little over 2 months post op and am down almost 30lbs (I need to update my weight ticker). We have to get the exercise on ladies...it really does help, at least for me it does make all the difference in losing a fwe ounces a week to losing a few pounds.
  6. I am absolutely agreed. I am 3 weeks post revision (band to sleeve) on Monday Jan 19th, and loving it. first 2 wks lost 15lbs, but my inches are just melting so quickly. I will be see my doc on Tuesday again. Just love it.

    Still having pain

You were a band to sleeve revision? I would call the doctor. No matter what the procedure you should not still be having pain 3 weeks out.
  8. Amber- I have a revision date on 2/4 as well. Maybe we can compare notes afterwards
  9. Congratulations on your revision. From what I know, a friend told me, the gastric bypass works faster. Welcome to the group, a lot of good information here.
  10. Hi everyone! I've been around the boards for 2 years now as a lapbander and lurker. I had many issues with my band and finally made the jump to take it out. I had a revision to gastric bypass almost 2 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to a new beginning! Thanks for reading

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

I was banded in 2008 and am having revision on Monday. I am so excited. I never had trouble with the band apart from my own inability to work with it. I lost 40 pounds but only when I was eating nothing and working out twice a day. When I couldn't keep that up the weight came back. I feel a lot better prepared thi s time. Head's in a better place, older and wiser, researched more, and with a better tool I feel very optimistic. This forum has been great, incredibly helpful.
  13. I was wondering the same thing as I wait for my revision - I don't want to gain the weight back like I did with the band.

    Looking for a surgery buddy

I'm 3 wks post op down 13 lbs. I was hoping for more as well. I'm not exercising so much because of the pain I'm having plus I'm still so tired! I'm a revision the band was hell. Any one have any comments on the pain and how long it will last? It is mostly in the area my band was.

    Band to Sleeve in 2015

I revised 3 years ago. My experience is that the sleeve feels more natural, like I just have a smaller stomach. My comments are my personal observations... The sleeve is more consistent and not as restrictive as a filled band. I do not experience stuck or regurgitation. Only handful of times I vomited was from wolfing food. I was banded in 2001 at 272 and got to about 205 in a year. I had bad side effects from the beginning but by year 2 they were intolerable and all Fluid was removed. My highest recorded weight was 332 by 2005. Did weight watched etc and spent many years in the 240-275 range. I had my band removed in Sept 2011 and sleeve done Dec 2011. I weighed 308. I got to my goal of 158 in 14 months. I got down to 140 but am currently in the 150s. I lost 160#! !!!! So I find maintenance takes focus and I can see how easy it would be to regain but I am so far successful! !! I have never been able to maintain a big loss for very long pre-sleeve.
  17. First of all, anything is,possible...trust me. My story is very similar to yours although I really didn't have any issues with the band. My doc said that the band failed me, I did not fail the band! Lost about 100 lbs starting in 2007. It took many fills and tweeking to get me to my sweet spot. Found it and worked with it. In the summer my port started shifting so I went in for a port replacement and woke up with the entire band being removed due to erosion!!!! I was shocked, sad and feel like someone took the only thing that had ever worked for me in 30 years away just like that, snap!! I immediately began the revision proceed but with a BMI of 26, there was no way. I tried, I truly did to keep the weight off but at 50 lbs additional and 2 co mortalities I was approved for the sleeve. Had it done 1 week ago from tonight and it was the best thing ever. I have CIGNA and I had a tough time, but other people have had smooth sailing with CIGNA...I just can't figure them out. Make sure you find out if your ins will only cover 1 bariatric proceedure a lifetime. Sleeve is fantastic so far
  18. I am wondering about lactose intolerance. You said that many are after RNY. I was a lapband which was revised to gastric bypass. I don't drink much milk, although my clinic has suggested 2 glasses per day. I do eat yogurt and cheese. But I have had a few glasses of milk lately and had major digestive upset right after. Could you give more info on this issue?

    Complications

I had gastric bypass in 2013. It was a revision from lapband to bypass. Everything has been great as far as weight loss. I am pretty much at goal and have been for over 6 months now. But I have had issues that I question whether they are from the bypass. I never had these things before bypass. I have "low blood sugar" attacks. I call them that, and my doc's office agreed it sounds like classic low blood sugar. But what happens is, first my thinking feels a little strange, weak...then my body is weak, I feel very dizzy, I sweat - immediately am wet head to toe, have to lay down. I was told to eat Protein every 2 hours, and sometimes I do forget to eat that often...but it has happened even when I had eaten about an hour before. I eat 2 string cheese pieces and wait for this to pass. It is really scary. It has happened twice as I was driving my car. Next issue is that I have developed severe GERD. Never had it before, even with the lapband. I am on Omeprazole now. I have had bad gas lately too. I can feel it in my stomach and all thru my guts. The worst thing that happened to me, and there is no research linking this with bypass, I developed an auto immune disease 4 months after surgery. It is Alopecia Universalis. It means that your immune system attacks your hair follicles all over the body and your hair falls out all over the whole body. I am 61 years old. It is very rare for this disease to start this age. It is a genetic plus environmental trigger type of disease. But I have been reading and 80% of our immune system in in our gut. And there are people who have found "cure" for alopecia by diet change. That isn't scientific, but I really wonder...I had allergies and had a weak immune system before bypass and I really think that the bypass pushed it past the point where the alopecia could come into activity. There is no cure but there are treatments and I have shots all over my scalp every month of steroids, which fight the immune response. I now have eyelashes and eyebrows back and some head hair, although I can't go out without a wig or hat. That makes me wonder if I regret the bypass. I can't say I do. All my life my weight and my addiction to sugar have been a huge problem. As I got older it was harder to manage my weight and I am so happy to be back to my young adult weight again! Also, I do get dumping syndrome so I don't eat sweets at all. It has really helped me. Tracy

Advice from the experts please? :-)

Yes the dietitian was especially focused on protein when we talked! Did you find it hard to get in all the protein you needed at first? I'm really curious how your diet and typical day is now, 10 years later? I've heard that about the 2 step DS being safer as well. I've also seen a lot of posts and discussions in the forums about doctors recommending the 2 step simply to make more money. I have no idea which is more accurate! I want the one step because I know getting insurance to cover another surgery will be a nightmare... If I do go with the sleeve I'm going to make sure I document EVERYTHING so that if it fails and I need a revision, I have plenty of evidence that I followed the rules. I could come to NYC. Do you have a recommendation? I don't mind travel if it means the best care. Thanks so much!! :-)

Advice from the experts please? :-)

The part of this thread that confuses me is surgeons telling high BMI people they will only lose 60#.... I started at 51 BMI and have been maintaining at 24-25 BMI post sleeve. I am 5"5" and lost 160# with sleeve. I was a revision from band to sleeve. First surgeon I consulted said I should do gastric bypass and didn't even educate me on sleeve option. It seems to me consulting with a surgeon who advocates DS might be a good idea since you really want this.
  22. Hi all. I had my lap band surgery surgery 3 years ago this month and after a long miserable 3 years I am now 1 pound lighter than when I had my surgery. Never thought I would even consider another surgery, but now I'm waiting on approval to get a revision. I need to lose 125 pounds and my doctor recommended the sleeve for me instead of the switch because I'm 28 and want to have children very soon. But he said I would only lose an average 60 pounds with the sleeve. He said I could come back and do the switch after I'm done having kids... But I don't want to have to have another surgery, I want to do it right this time. My main concern is having children right after the switch. My doctor first told me that I needed to wait for a while and now he's saying to consult with my OBGYN to see what she says. I thought my mind was made up but now I'm stressing that the sleeve isn't going to be enough for the weight I want to lose. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions!
