    Naw'lins!

See, you don't have to blow off your new way of eating - I think I would miss the copious amount of alcohol more.
  2. I have never had the misfortune of experiencing that. I can eat sweet stuff and still feel fine. The only exception was after my daughters Deb which was alcohol free so we had to drink cordial, woke up the next morning with a headache worse than a hangover.

    What is it like?.........

i'm a week short of two months post op and am struggling with the same issues that you are. So much of what made my life pleasurable pre-op was related to cooking, eating and socializing with alcohol & food. I no longer want to go out to restaurants with friends because I'm full after a few forkfuls. I still cook daily as I always have because my wife should not be punished because I had WL surgery. I can't say I'm happy with my new relationship with food. It has left a huge void in my life and I hope I can` find something to replace it. What that might be, I am clueless. The good news is my health has improved significantly. My diabetes is now under good control with 1/4 of the insulin I used to take, and my blood pressure (with meds) is a very good 130/60. I don't ache all over and my stamina has improved. Like James Marusek said, "Life is full of trade-offs." I'm 65 y/o and I got this surgery to save my life. I did not want to be the fat, old blind guy with no feet. If I was younger I would try anything to avoid it. I was very active (athletic) when I was younger and was able to stay height/weight proportionate through my exercise. Everybody is different but I would get this surgery only as a last resort after you can honestly look yourself in the mirror and say you've tried everything.
  4. I have a birthday party that I have to go to tonight. Anyway I don’t wanna drink alcohol as I’m only one month out, I can’t drink juice due to sugar, and I’m worried anything with bubbles will hurt. I don’t want a bunch of questions and why I’m only drinking Water. What can I drink that looks like a normal drink that I will be able to tolerate. I was hoping for a non-alcohol, non frizzy, non sugar drink. Does a drink like this even exist? Please help guys I have no one else to turn too? [emoji20] I’m so anxious about tonight.

    Monthly Craving - Help

Don't give into eating sweets. It is habit and your mind will sabotage your weight loss. Try to eat proteins first and then veggies. I know that I am addicted to Quest Protein bars even though it's a protein bar, I can still gain weight on it. So I am working on getting it out of my house..... Get all the sweets out of the house and purposely avoid the grocery isles that have unhealthy foods and candy. you and still gain weight on SF stuff too. In fact it can make the craving for sweets even stronger. Plus the sugar alcohols can give you really bad gas....

    Alcohol and the sleeve!

First, no judgment here. Just trying to help you. I would definitely talk to your doctor. You don't want to create problems for yourself. You may be doing damage to your stomach/digestive tract because alcohol can cause inflammation. Also, you have to think about the damage you might be causing to your liver. Our livers are already working hard due to the major weight loss. And then there's the mental aspect. Maybe you've heard about addiction transfer, where WLS patients trade their issues with food to something else. Not saying that's what you're doing, but it's something to think about. If you feel like things are getting out of hand, go talk to a counselor/therapist. Also, try to find a healthier form of stress relief. Best wishes to you on your journey!

    Frustrated and Hungry...

Hi, I was banded on the 31st, I felt great, dropped 19 pounds quickly and now am stuck. I am getting hungry 2 hours after eating and craving things I shouldn't have. I quit soda and alcohol altogether, I wait 30 minutes after I eat to drink Water. I feel like I was doing everything right, making healthy eating choices etc, so how come I'm so hungry and craving stuff? Thankfully I get my first fill this Thursday, is anyone else experiencing any of the same things?:cursing:

    Carb Count

I am counting all the carbs. I think it was the Atkins Diet that let you subtract fiber and sugar alcohol to come up with net carbs. Personally, I think nutrition science is quite fuzzy and so I am sticking to a more strict interpretation of "carb."

    Abbreviations

Personally I'd separate the social/forum ones from the weight loss/medical related ones. NAFLD: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (more common than NASH) ac: before meals pc: after meals A1C/HBA1c - Glycated Hemoglobin, Type A1C (average 3 month plasma glucose aka blood sugar concentration) LFT = Liver function/diagnostic tests ALT - Alanine aminotransferase (enzyme along with AST & GGT primarily for liver function/diagnostic tests) AST - Aspartate aminotransferase (enzyme along with ALT & GGT primarily for liver function/diagnostic tests) GGT - Gamma-glutamyltransferase (enzyme along with ALT & AST primarily for liver function/diagnostic tests) PTT - Partial thromboplastin time (blood clotting factor diagnostic test) DM - diabetes mellitus IDDM - insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus EKG - should use ECG as well, EKG = Elektro-kardiographie (German), ECG = Electrocardiography (English) HDL - High density lipoprotein (good cholesterol) LDL - Low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    Alcohol?

I was told no alcohol for a year. The reason for this is your liver is working overtime to process all the toxins released from the fat you're burning, and most of that fat is lost in the first year. If you drink alcohol when your liver is already stressed it could cause liver failure. The second reason for the alcohol restriction is the high risk of cross-addiction. We all suffer from some sort of food addiction. When you remove the substance a person was addicted to, they will be susceptible to other forms of addiction like alcohol, drugs, sex, or shopping. After a year we've learned new coping skills and it may be safe to have alcohol in moderation with less risk.

    Hunger With Sleeve Vs Band

What I will comment about hunger is that there is still also a relationship to how you manage your food and exercise. If I eat a high Protein, small portion diet, my hunger remains very low to practically zero. If I eat junky snacky food, my desire to eat increases. I don't know if it is fair to call it hunger, but it is some sort of physical response to crappy food. Thirst and acidy stomach can also "mimic" hunger, especially those first few months post sleeve. I have been told that if you exercise long durations you can trigger hunger. I don't know about that, when I go out and do horse stuff I am out for 4-6 hours and I feel that my hunger is reduced when I am physically busy. I have to remind myself to eat something especially if I am exerting alot. I am still most likely to eat "wrong" late in the evening watching TV - old habits can be hard to break. I try to have a Protein Bar or a bit of fruit with cottage cheese for dessert - so at least some sort of nutritional value So, my advice - focus on small quantities of foods like lean meats, cottage cheese, greek yogurt etc etc with veggies to balance it out. Go light on the fruit, high carbs like pastas or bread, alcohol or any of that. You just feel more satisfied on the high protein with veggies diet and your blood sugar stays more even if you eat moderate to low glycemic indicator foods. I do NOT eat super low carb because it makes me feel bad physically and I am still losing weight okay. When I have a slice of bread, it is a wholesome whole grain, I try to avoid a lot of crackers and cookie type carbs. Ice cream literally makes me ill and I get diarrea so that source of fat and carbs is pretty much gone too. When I was first banded - say the first few months - my hunger was seriously reduced, but my drive to eat really wasn't. After the first few months, I was constantly hungry and wanted to eat. It was not good. Then, when the band was removed I realized it was helping some because I went from being hungry alot to being just RAVENOUS practically all the time. It was terrible but convinced me that I really needed the sleeve because something just isn't right - my stomach sends too much hunger signals to the brain. What a miserable way to live - always focused on food. I tried behavioral therapy, but I am convinced that MOST of the issue for me is physical hunger (not to say that old habits and head hunger aren't a factor too, but it is smaller then the drive to eat due to hunger in my case anyway).

    21st birthday

For me personally, two months out would have been fine to have a drink. But do check with your surgeon and evaluate your body. Have you tolerated most foods well? How do you feel? I healed very quickly and knew I could tolerate it. Some advice though: -Hard liquor made me throw up instantly. I only tried it once since surgery, and I threw up immediately. I haven't attempted it since. - I cant have beer since it is carbonated and I am only allowed carbonated drinks after 12 months to avoid discomfort, so I cant drink that. - The only thing I drink is wine. I really enjoy pink moscato and it is light enough to drink without stomach issues. After one glass I can feel it, and after two I am REALLY feeling it. Pre surgery I could've drank a whole bottle and barely felt it. Be careful, and keep in mind that all alcoholic beverages are high in sugar and calories. But also, have a good time and happy 21st!!
  15. My esophagus is dilated do to the Lap band. When I went for the upper GI it looks almost double the size a normal esophagus should be. How long does it normally take to heal? Apparently the surgeon who will be removing my lap band is the best one at Kaiser. Regardless if he’s good, I thought he was an asshole. I felt belittled by his answers and although I could go for a second opinion I know I’m going to need to get the lap band removed regardless. He said it’ll take a year for my esophagus to heal but I don’t know if that answer was exaggerated as I felt all his other answers were. For instance: When I asked about how much weight people normally gain after the lap band was removed, he said many people even lose weight because you can actually eat the right stuff and my hunger would stay the same. I asked how long would it take for me to heal after the surgery, he said because it’s a simple procedure many people go back to work the next day but it’s up to me. When he asked if I drink, I said yes on occasion he told me I needed to stop. I said I don’t drink everyday and proceeded to show me what alcoholism does to your liver. OK, SIR, I AM NOT AN ALCOHOLIC. He asked me when I wanted to get the lapband removed (although NEVER) and told him after the Holidays. He was upset at my response and said, "I had another patient asking if they can get it removed next week, but I said NO because I thought you were going to want to do it." Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh okkkkkkkkkkkkkk,,,,,,,, my appt. is Dec 2. The nurse is GREAT and I told her what happened and she told me she would talk to him. After they spoke, it almost seemed as if the story changed. She told me he would like to see me in 6 months after the procedure to know how I’m healing and I would be able to do the sleeve. I’m trying with all my heart just to stay positive. Again, with a dilated esophagus that almost seems double the size, does anyone know how long it takes to heal? Are there any remedies, Vitamins to speed up the dilation recovery process?? Thank you. <3

    Alcohol?

I am 3 months out and this month I went out a few times and got the drink, sex on the beach which has vodka orange juice pineapple juice and I think cranberry and after half of the drink my lower abdomen started having sharp pains. And then I went out a week or so later got the same drink and it happened again! I was worried and thought maybe it was the mix of sugars in the orange and pineapple juice. I switched my drink and the pain went away. I told my doctor and he said at 3 months its ok to have alcohol and that it most likely was the mix of sugars. I was relieved.

    Carb. Fiene!!!?!?!?!?!

Okay…..so I am officially 3 weeks post op today, May 20, 2008 and am seriously ready to eat a cow . I have been this way since last week and the doc, oh I love him but hell, told me that as long as I am losing weight he is not too concerned about anything. My issues, I am not eating the 4oz that is suggested, but more like 10-12oz, and he said that is fine because I am losing weight so long as I am not eating crap. :cursing: I must confess, I did have 3 cookies last week although totally drowned in milk, I did eat them and I told him this:thumbdown:. He asked if that was it and I honestly told him yes. I had not even eaten the recommended oatmeal, mushy cereal, in fact no breads, rice, pasta, etc. Right now, I want to dive my big ol but into a plate of nothing by carbohydrates or a greasy cheeseburger with some chips and queso, but I have refrained. :smile2: Quitting sugar and, well hell the “good foods” (aka: fattening foods) the way I did was like telling a drug addict, alcoholic or smoker to stop cold turkey. I was told my insurance approved me on April 18 and I needed to start my liquid diets because they were scheduling my surgery for April 25, which ended up getting pushed back to April 29, 2008. Now, I am not ungrateful because I appreciate the opportunity to have this surgery, I am sure as much as any of you, but someone please tell me what I can have because right now I want to cave in and eat something that I know I do not need, should not eat and is totally against what this procedure is for. BTW……I have eaten the sugar free jellos and puddings, the sugar free popsicles and the yogurts, but I think it is the bread my body is craving as I have had ZERO of that (except those three cookies). I feel tired, worn out, not really wanting to do anything, which I am thinking is the lack of carbs as my intake is very minimal right now. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!!!

    Shopping List for Surgery

SHOPPING LISTS AND HINTS-FULL liquid DIET PHASE First 14 - days after surgery Hints: Start very slowly - be patient with your new pouch. Remember to treat it like an infant stomach. Take very small amounts of liquid at a time otherwise you may vomit or feel very uncomfortable if you try to gulp instead of taking small sips The "survival " tips for the first few days after surgery are - fluids first, Multivitamin & mineral supplement (and Vitamin B1 if needed), then Protein. You may not feel hungry or even thirsty or you may even feel nauseous, but to prevent dehydration, sip, sip, sip - (suck on ice, sugar-free fruit popsicles or sugar-free jello). If a particular drink or food causes nausea or vomiting when you advance to the next diet pase, always go back to the clear liquid diet phase for a day or two to rest your stomach. Then slowly advance to the next diet phase. If you vomit more than once a day, call your bariatric specialist for medical attention. Shopping List: Vitamins and minerals protein supplements Water bottle or sipping container strainer or blender nonfat or 1% cow's milk lactaid, soy or rice milk if you are lactose intolerant non- or low-fat, artificially sweetened smooth yogurts (no chunks of fruit, nuts or cereal) low fat creamed Soups, strained first broth or miso Soup, strained Cream of Wheat Water Low calorie, non-carbonated drinks that contain less than 10 calories per serving: Crystal light, Diet Snapple, Sugar-free Kool-aid, etc. Diluted 100% fruit juice (limit to 6-oz/day) Sugar-free Jell-O or sugar -free pudding sugar-free popsicles Nutrasweet or Splenda Decaffeinated tea or coffee AVOID all carbonated caffeinated and alcoholic beverages

    Alcohol

Alcohol is a big NO-NO if you want ur surgery to be a success.. It not only adds calories but will eventually increase the stomach capacity much more than it should go. So be careful, the side effects are what we want to avert and why we chose plication in the first place... I am 14 months out and can say that the possibility of increased capacity in plication is much more than a sleeve. So, the ball is in our and our hands only. We stay careful- we lose; we let ourselves lose- we gain..why would we want something like alcohol to rule our lives, when life can be much better without it..

    Alcohol Consumtion

I think Dr.'s that advise against alcohol do so primarily because it's just a source of totally empty calories. I choose not to drink primarily because of that, I find it a challenge to eat 1200-1400 calories a day and get really good nutrition in, so I try to make all my calories count health wise. You can't really replace nutritious food choices with supplements. That said, I think enjoying empty calorie treats, alcoholic or otherwise on occassion and in moderation is no big dealie. For me I did the lap-band primarily to improve health and quality of life, so I'm anal about what I put in my body most of the time. I usually avoid drinking calories unless it's v-8 or low fat dairy, for me it's just too easy to take in too many calories in liquid form.
  23. I have never been a sweets craver. Sweets have always been the last thing on my list. Now suddenly, well maybe not suddenly - but recently (I had my surgery Sept. 11) I am having chocolate cravings? Very strange... This must be the addiction transfer thing. Definately gonna nip it in the bud - I am only having chocolate powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury. I have been on a STRICT WATCH on addiction transfer. I am in recovery and so it is easy for me to identify alcohol or medication craving, but this one really surprised me! Anyone else have new "cravings" or addiction red flags since surgery?
  24. I didn't have a drain, but my doctor said I had a reaction to the glue from the butterfly tape used to close my incision. Caused me to have major itching. Alcohol on a cotton swab and Benadryl definitely helped relieve it. I'd say err on the safe side and go have it checked out. Good luck to you.

    Alcohol & the Sleeve

I am 10 weeks out and can say that one glass of wine does get me loopy. Quite a cheap date after band to sleeve revision. This was not the case prior to the surgery. My surgeon allows limited alcohol but was clear in that those calories go toward my daily caloric limit so at this point in my journey I definitely do not over indulge.
