    September Ops

I'm 1 week post-op today. So far it's ok, I'm just concerned that I have not been able to reach my daily fluid intake of 64 ozs. The gas is finally subsiding so that's a plus. Just trying my best to take things one day at time. I tend to be hard on myself, so I am really trying not to beat myself for not reaching my fluid intake yet.

I can really empathize with your thoughts. Even 2nd week after surgery now, I am still wondering if an elective surgery was the only way to conquer my life-long problem. What happened to me on the pre-op diet might encourage you a little about eating tiny amounts (though I'm sure not the best). I was doing fine on it, really strict, but 6 days in, they told me my surgery would be delayed indefinitely! (due to Covid crowding beds). I did NOT want to have to start over, so what my program nutritionist told me to do was substitute one meal with 2 oz of chicken or fish and 2 oz of vegetables. I was really afraid that this would screw up the whole thing, but I only did that for 4 more days. Then they told me my surgery would be only 2 days after originally scheduled, so I was really only on the liquid diet for 6 days, then partial for 4 days, then back on for 2 days. (In my case, was supposed to be only 10 days total) Yet in my situation they said that would be ok, and I've had no problems at all with the surgery or since. I get to wondering when reading about the negative experiences if I was really operated on, but all situations are different. The only thing I did "wrong" was after the first week, when I had so much trouble getting in the 60 grams of protein a day, I started drinking protein waters, and then found in the 2nd week I was getting too much protein! So my lesson learned is use the protein water sparingly and count all protein grams. But I hope you make it through the rest of the pre-op and have a positive surgery experience.
  4. Pre-op diets are drastically different from surgeon to surgeon so don't be worried about that. Some don't even require one, until two days before surgery to make sure your system is clean of debris. As far as the swimming and exercise are concerned... Usually you can soak in the bathtub or swim after 2 weeks due to the incisions needing to be healed. I believe two days is far too soon. May get infected. My surgeon wanted me to start doing light exercise like walking or cycling right away, just no heavy workout with weights.
  5. My stall broke and I'm down 2.2 lb. this week. It must have been the pickles lol They always cause me to gain water weight for a couple of days. Causes a lot of weight fluctuation in the past and present. I've really been craving them or even a swig of pickle juice. I read it is common to crave salty things when our carbs are low. I eat a balanced diet, not keto but because my calories are low at the moment, so therefore, so are the carbs. I am rooting for all those on a stall as I await my next one... Not many things are certain in life but stalls are inevitable for me. Interesting read here: "High carbohydrate consumption has caused your body to retain water and salt up until now. When you eliminate carbohydrates from the diet, you begin to expel pounds of water" https://www.theartofketo.com/crave-salt-on-keto/

    Day 5 post op- struggling.

Short answer: yes, it does get better. Long answer: From a sample of one (me)…i had a challenging time drinking those effing protein shakes the first couple weeks. No joke, I couldn’t even finish 1 serving in 3 days…i would end up tossing it and make a new one…which I also could not finish. What helped was switching to a less sweet brand (i ended up settling on Isopure Dutch Chocolate). I used water instead of milk, added a tsp of decaf instant coffee crystals, and blended it with ice…so much more palatable (for me). I also went through about 2-3 weeks of a serious case of total food aversion and just wanted to gag at even just the thought of eating. It slowly got better. Am almost 3 yrs out now and I can eat basically anything (if I wanted to, and yes, in much, much smaller amounts than pre-op) Hang in there, this is all temporary. This time next year, your rockin’ bod in a bikini will make all the current annoyances a distant memory. Good Luck! ❤️

    No weight loss pre-op

I couldn't budge the scale the first three months, no matter how few calories I ate. Every time I managed to lose a pound, it would show back up within two days, sometimes bringing a buddy with it. It was incredibly frustrating to be eating cabbage instead of cake and not losing. What finally overcame it was making sure I drank at least half a gallon of fluids every day. My weight loss is still much slower than is reasonable to expect, but at least the gaining seems to have stopped (knocking on wood).
  8. I reached out to my bariatric care team, who was made aware of my visit to the ER last Tuesday and said the normal oral tablet medication would be fine. Here is my communication to them today, and their reply. Me: So, the response was lacking, since a number of my concerns (medication absorption, weight stall, not being able to hit my nutrient goals) were not addressed. I will assume positive intent and say they have probably dealt with dozens upon dozens of people with concerns/fears/complaints post-op that do not amount to anything, so perhaps I've been lumped in that category. We'll see what the doctor says today (he's a rheumatologist) although he may just refer me back to my PCP or the ER (in which case you all have permission to say "I told you so!") I'm going to ask for blood work too just to ensure I'm not septic, and to see where my WBC is.

    Hello, I'm John

Good Morning. My name is John. I'm a 45 year old male and I'm 3 weeks post SADI-S surgery. My surgery went amazingly well. I had no real pain issues. I think I took pain meds 4 times in the hospital and haven't taken anything since coming home. I think I've been very fortunate as far as that is concerned. I'm still working on recognizing my bodies signals but it's coming along. I guess my biggest problem right now is being restless. I sleep fine at night but during the day I get antsy if I sit for more than about 45 minutes. Right now I'm working from home so I can get up and walk around the house or walk up and down the street a little. I'm more concerned about when I go back to the office. However, I can't complain at all. My surgery went well and I'm doing great post surgery.

    Carbonation?

I had my first carbonated drink at around the 1-2 month mark (sparkling water). Made me burp like a crazy person. But i love it (and had no adverse effects other then the embarrassing/annoying burping, so just kept drinking it, in small amounts at first) I’ll be 3 years out in October and I probably drink 5-6 litres of sparkling water a week (I have a water carbonator at home) P.S. I still burp. Not the ridiculous amount as before, but still a alot.
  11. Well, i’ll echo the others here in saying trust your doc. He has actually seen you and treated you, and I would assume he would be in a better position to advise YOU, than someone who’s never met you. On the other hand, your peace of mind is paramount, so if you believe you will be better served by another, then by all means go that route. You *may* be hindering your future success if you don’t trust your doc…so go with one you do. P.S. Nothing is stopping you from waiting a couple more weeks before YOU feel comfortable enough to go swimming. He didn’t say you HAD to go swimming, only that you CAN. Good Luck! ❤️

I'm out four years and in the past few months have been battling a slight gain. It has brought me back mortality as far as weight loss goes. I no longer have the super power to lose it as I once did post WLS. After talking with others who have had WLS we all came to the conclusion that 1- The gain must be addressed ASAP. 2- We cannot eat as we did, we need to "trim the fat" from our diets. It's like spending too much money and going into debt. Do you continue to spend at the same rate and expect to make up the debt? Same with food, we need to take in less to lose the most. 3- Do it in attainable increments. A loss of 2lbs a week will get you better results overall than trying to lose 10lbs in a week. 2lbs is doable and you can build on your success while not achieving the 10lbs psychologicaly will start you on the eating for comfort spiral 4- Some form of exercise is better than no exercise. We found that taking the stairs on a regular basis really helps as does simple walking. Of course if you feel comfortable going to a gym that's great as well. 5- Weigh once a week and the same time on the same scale. We find this gives us enough time to see trends and to address them. Daily weigh ins are not accurate and longer than a week is too much time to correct any minor gains. At this stage of our lives weight loss takes effort and time. Long gone are the days of rapid weight loss. I'm lucky to have so many family and friends to talk to and to get different views on things WLS related. It really helps. I for one could not do it on my own.
  13. some surgeons don't require a two-week pre-op diet, so that isn't at all unusual. as for exercise, I was only allowed to walk until I was four weeks out, but if he's seen your stitches and thinks it's OK for you to swim, then whatever...
  14. I have other friends and family who have had the surgery. That's three different surgeons between all of us. There were three DIFFERENT post op plans that we followed. So far. we all are doing well. Follow YOUR surgeons plan.

    RNY peeps weightloss

I didn't really have an exact goal when I started. At my first surgeon visit he told me he thought I could get to 140. He asked me what my goal was and I told him I wasn't sure but once I got to 140 then we'd figure it out. It had been so long since I weighed that and it seemed so far away. At my first post op visit he said he thought I could get to 130. I said ok, I'll shoot for that and we'll reassess then. I reached that in 9 months. I told him since I only needed 7 more pounds to be a normal BMI, I was going to shoot for that. I told him I didn't come that far just to still be "overweight." He told me not to lose too much or I'd look sick. A friend of mine that had WLS told me "your body will figure it out. You'll stop losing when you body is done." It took me 2 more months to reach 123 but apparently my body wasn't done. I finally stopped losing at 108 lbs. And that is an appropriate weight for me because I'm only 4'11." I don't know why but this week I'm weighing in the106 range. I'm not trying to lose more. I think as long as I'm 110 or less I'm good. I'll be 3 yrs post op next month and I don't look sick...I look normal.

    Regret?

Sorry you feel this way, Pookie, but try to be positive. Thinking you should never have had the op 5 weeks afterwards is not helpful. This is a life-change, and a life change that is not immediate, but takes time, like the opening of a lovely flower. I am 8 years down the line. There have been times (like when I’ve had serious dumping syndrome from stupidly drinking a few mouthfuls of sugar-laden milkshake) when I’ve thought I never want to eat or drink again IN MY LIFE… but it passes. From being a little short, depressed ‘pudding’ who couldn’t walk down the stairs in the morning because of the pain in my joints, and would refuse requests to go out because a couldn’t walk anywhere without discomfort and pain, who had to by huge clothes to get over my ginormous bosom, I am now a normal woman, who can look in a shop window and see a slim lady who can walk without pain, without her thighs rubbing together, who has the energy to enjoy life and likes what she sees. Who no longer has to take blood pressure and heart drugs, who has a normal pulse rate and no more GERD. I could not have done this, and kept it off, without the op. How could I regret giving myself a chance of a healthy life being the person I want to be? You must keep your eyes on the prize as well. That’s why you’re doing this. It will work, but it’s not a magic wand, it takes time. But you can do it! X
  18. Hi, I had my RNY on the first of September, I think I can start pureed good but not sure like what.
  19. Hey Guess when did your weightloss plateau? I am 6 months out and struggling getting off my last 30 pounds. I eat super healthy, no alcohol, take my vitamins, drink my liquids and workout 5 days a week.
  20. I was sleeved in March and have lost 60. But now I have someone staying with me, my ex. He has become homeless in the last 6 months. He bought a bunch of junkfood even though I told him no (two kinds of cookies, cheese-covered popcorn, ice cream, high cal fruit bars, chocolate cake) then he ended up in the hospital. I broke down two days out of a week and my old eating disorder kicked in, causing me to gain 5 pounds! Now he is calling saying don’t eat my food! I told him already he could not bring that into my house. He will get out in two days. I will be taking him elsewhere because even though he is contributing financially he is wrecking my weight loss. Btw, he is also smoking cigarettes. Guess I am looking for support in my decision to not let him live here any more. It is sad he may be homeless but he apparently cares nothing about my health. I know I will not be able to continue my program with him around.

    Regret?

This sounds like the infamous "three week stall"—there are thousands and thousands and thousands of posts here about it. Just stay the course and the weight loss will resume!
  22. I was hospitalized for three weeks for a bout of cellulitis and had to go through a long course of "nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" antibiotics. If it is hot and swollen, go to the ER.

I’ve had some regain. I’ll be 5 years out next March and I’ve gained back almost half of what I lost. I’m extremely depressed about it. I met with my doctor last week and see my nutritionist in a couple weeks. I work out with a trainer 1-2 times per week and go to the gym 3-4 times per week for about 40 minutes. I do HIIT training. I try to track but I’m not great at it…and I tend to get extremely obsessive about the numbers. I’m starting to feel like a failure and I feel like a deer in headlights! If you’ve been down this road please help. I could use some support and encouragement.
  24. My mother is 79 and does water aerobics 4 days a week. There are lots of options for seniors.
  25. Could be an allergic reaction or sensitivity to something too. Could be something you ‘re eating like some artificial sweeteners can cause skin irritations. Or external things like washing powders, shower gels, etc. Have you changed anything you’re using or eating lately? There’s also a couple of viruses that cause skin irritations & itchiness. I had one a few years back - I scratched myself silly for a couple of weeks until i got over it.
