    Fell Off The Bandwagon :(

HI Erin.. I am in almost the same position as you. I was also banded in August lost 20lbs, and i have maintained for the last 5 weeks. I have only had 1 fill since surgery and that was on Oct 29 when I had a port revision (mine flipped) 4cc in a 11cc band. I am literally stuck in the same point and its driving me crazy. I am scheduled for a fill on Monday Nov 19 I am hoping a fill when get me moving again so I can really start losing weight. I was just cleard by my doc to go back to the gym this week, so I am super excited to get back into the swing of things. I know we can do this! Stay positive..
  2. I love all of the advice from people that have no clue! LOL! PCOS cravings are kicking, not sure what has reactivated the pcos, but it defiantly needs to go away! Unless you have the PCOS cravings you have absolutely no clue what I am going through. It is a stronger intensity than what a pregnant women has. It is not an excuse it is a fact, so unless you have a clue don't give your snobbish opinions. I am still waiting to hear back about my port revision. My foot is healed and I can walk again and work out again. Since I don't seem to have restriction I am going back to protein shake diet. I need to loose the weight that I have gained this summer while I was not able to work out. No it can be revised to a duodenal switch
  4. My mom and I both went to the Nicholson Clinic. I had Dr. Nick do a band on me five years ago and he did my band to sleeve revision a month ago. Both times were great and everyone at their offices are extremely helpful. My mom had a sleeve done earlier this year and she had one of his associates Dr. Roshek for her surgery. She loved him as well. They have a third surgeon, but I can't vouch for him because I don't know anyone who has used him personally. Also, they're a center of excellence if that's a requirement for your insurance. I hope you find the right place for you so that you can reach your goals. Good luck!

Lap band revised to sleeve 6/9/2017 - poop

I had a band to sleeve revision on June 8th! It took a couple of days to poo. And it's weird. Sorry to be disgusting...but let's be real...it's like juicy farts. It happens different for everyone. Especially with what you ate before surgery. Hopefully you are empty. It will build up. But it's more like a black sludge. My doctor assured me it's fine. Happy pooping. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I had a band to sleeve revision on June 8. This surgery was so much easier than the band. I assume it's from all the walking they had me do at the hospital. I hadn't had any gas pain at all and I haven't had any pain killers since leaving the hospital. Total day and night difference from my band surgery. So amazing testimonies...like... No gas pain No stomach pain Incisions healing well Can walk and move with no pain However...I got hit with bronchitis. This happened after the lapband surgery too. I went to my PCP a couple of weeks before surgery and said it felt like bronchitis coming in. She assured me it was just allergies. I can tell you now, definitely not allergies. The coughing has made my back and stomach sore. I thank God for my bipap because it gets air in me. It's awful! Does anyone else do this after surgery? I usually get bronchitis a few time a year but right after surgery is becoming a fad with me. I don't like it.
  7. Hi April. I'm getting a band to sleeve revision in May and I can't wait. Are you ready? You're just a week out.

    severe reflux

Bypass surgery saved my life 10 yrs ago. I had had severe GERD and gallbladder problems. My hiatal hernia was the size of the surgeon's fist. It was also repaired, and my gallbladder was removed. I might add that 3 mos prior to surgery I was rushed to another hosp due to severe anemia; the hemoglobin was down to 4.8--normal is around 12 to 15. I lost 85 pounds, kept it off for about 3 yrs, and then it started creeping back on me. My comorbid symptoms also returned with high blood pressure, as did nutritional deficiencies in Iron, Calcium, VitD, and Vit B12. I also failed to mention that I have hypertension for which I am allergic to all blood pressure drugs. So WLS is my only intervention for health. In 2007 I saw my surgeon who did an EGD to find my bypass had stretched 80%. That explained the 50+ pound weight regained for which I cannot lose without revision surgery--my date for surgery is May 31st, I am all ready!! Just doing preop diet now. What I want to say is that each person's circumstance is different. Yes, there is research out there touting bypasses but as I see it, bypass is not as 'popular' as it was when I had mine in 2001--there was no choices for surgery back then. In fact, laproscopic surgery was just coming out in practice back then, as was the lapband and gastric banding options. The surgeon I had at that time was not skilled in these newer procedures--because of my other needs at surgery mine was an open operation. You have to realize these studies are on different populations, with unique variables associated with the tests and observations. Don't let research intimidate your desires/need for WLS. Hope this will encourage your journey--if you don't have GERD then you won't postop--your dr's competence will guide the progress and possible adjustments to your treatment and care postoperatively. Ok so after reading that 5 year study where it stated that some people who had severe reflux and had to be revised to bypass...what??? Ok so my question is done anyone here have severe reflux? Did u always suffer from it before surgery? Reason I'm asking is because I don't have any problems with reflux(pre-op still) and I don't want any. I don't want to be on medication for life or worse have to have bypass in the end. Something none of us wanted in the first place. I do realize we are put on ppi's after surgery for a few months but crap, this news is slightly depressing

    severe reflux

I had heartburn twice in my life and one time it was when I was 8 months pregnant, ate chili Soup and was doing alot of bending over. So, no real history of acid reflux here. I had my sugery 23 days ago and have had no issues. My surgeon had one patient who he had to revise to RNY due to extreme acid reflux. She had to be fed through a tube for a month, waiting to see if it would resolve. This was his first and he said he refered to other docs who say it's rare, but it does happen. I may be get beat up here, but I think some of the problems may stem from the surgeon's techinique. I would ask my surgeon point blank how many of his patients who have no acid reflux issues pre-op, end up with it after surgery. My surgeon wants us on a PPI for only 2 months. I will go off of them as he advises and see how things go. If I have a problem I will definately let him know. A friend's surgeon never put her on one after surgery (hers was 3 days before me) and she has had no problem. I want to get off of the PPI as soon as possible due to the calcium deficiencies!

    Why is this happening???

My spice level preference has increased some. Chicken thighs are the only chicken I can eat now and I was an avid chicken eater pre WLS. I must say that I do find myself craving things I wouldn’t have before surgery like cabbage, butternut squash, and kimchi. A couple months after I had my VSG I cried in the grocery store parking lot because they didn’t have any grape Powerade zero as that and tea was the only liquids I could keep down. After my revision though that got so much better and I’m not sure why. But I do only use a half packet of crystal light in a 16oz bottled water now. 🤷‍♀️

    Looking for support

Well, there are a number of us here in Arizona, but we haven't been too active lately. We did have a lunch get-together in January, but things have fallen off since then. I am in the area from September through May, but go north for the really hot weather. Our most active member, WASaBubbleButt, just had a revision from band to sleeve, so you aren't alone around here. Welcome to the group. I have been banded for 8 months, and there are other who are old timers and some newbie too in the Phoenix area.
  14. Your post is such a godsend!! I have been researching revisions from Open rny due to having same issues as you and I was getting very depressed. I live in poplar bluff and was even researching going to Mexico but was getting shot down by then due to having open rny. I plan to reach out to Dr Snow' office tomorrow to start my journey.
  15. I had my VSG 7/2015. I never felt much restriction and was hungry from the start. I restricted my calories to 800 per day and followed all the rules for the first 3 months and lost 60lbs… then my mother in law was dropped on my doorstep. LONG story but I was the sole provider for my husband and 2 small kids, working 12 hour night shifts. She had stage 4 emphysema and end stage esophageal cancer with alcoholic dementia to boot. Our house was tiny. She was 69 and weighed 65 lbs … let’s just say I was a bit stressed. I stopped counting calories. I plateaued for a full year and then started gaining. I’m now 6.5 years out and just 27 lbs from where I started. I’m hesitant to revise. My bariatrician tells me people tend to not have as much success with revision. I chose a sleeve because I didn’t want to risk not being able to absorb medications I need but my GERD is so bad I may not have a choice. I’d love to hear if anyone had a similar struggle with their initial surgery and were successful with the second. Those in the thread who had the scar tissue and hernia repair, surely they will allow a follow up procedure.
  16. So sorry to hear that, I know how disappointing that is to wake up and no revision. I hope that you are able to find something that works for you.
  17. Have you tried an abstinence diet, swearing off all sugar, wheat flour, and processed foods? in preparation for revision surgery, I have been following this since April 1 and have lost 36 lbs. I know I will have to do this for life. I started with all-liquid for 2 weeks and then the abstention diet. The first two weeks were hard, but I no longer have insatiable cravings. I recommend reading A Pound the Cure by Matthew Weiner, Bright Lines Eating by Susan Peirce Thompson, and The Success Habits of Weightloss Patients by Colleen Clark.
  18. @Nifer72 thank you for your quick response to your revision update. Wow 8 hours in surgery I’m glad you had an experience surgeon. I go 3/24 im having Gastric Bypass revision using the TOR(e) method it may also be referred to ESG. Keep up your progress.
  19. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for my revision on March 21, 2022. I had my original surgery 21 years ago! My sw prior to the first surgery was 375, in the first year I lost 100lbs getting down to 275... my lowest weight since then was 248 due to an illness. I've bounced up and down between 250 and 280 since then. I am a diabetic, have Gerd and was just diagnosed with very slow motility (my pcp says gastroparesis but my surgeon just says slow motility). When I started the process for revision (7months ago) my surgeon didn't think insurance would cover for just weight loss, but with further testing we discovered the digestion issue, his tune changed and surgery was approved! I know a lot has changed with protocols in the last 21 years! I see my surgeon next week for pre-op so I will be asking him a lot, but wanted to find out from anyone who's had the proximal to distal revision as well: What was the recovery like for the distal revision compared to the original surgery? Did you have to spend anytime in the hospital? My surgeon already mentioned he does it outpatient and I should go home same day, which seems crazy to me! I know weight loss can be slower with a revision. How much did you lose and in what timeframe? Any other pieces of advice? I plan on strictly following the food phases that the nutritionist gave me and leaning toward the longest of the time frames she gave me... ie 2-3 weeks post op liquid, 4-8 weeks soft foods etc... I am determined to lose and get to a goal weight of 155-175 which my surgeon said was possible in our initial meeting 8 months ago.
  20. I understand how you feel. I was denied a sleeve and I have learned a lot about the appeal process. First of all, do not give up. One denial is not the end, not by a long shot. First, the best plan is to have your provider initiate a peer to peer appeal before you get involved. They can speak the language and explain the risks and complications. In my case I have had mechanical failure of the band for the past 13 years, including a revision to a new band in 2015. In your case, did your doctor say if the band contributed to the issue? Even if not, you have been successful with it and removing it because of unrelated issues is not your fault. Talk to your doctor and see what they say. There are plenty of stories of people appealing themselves and getting the approval. Keep us posted!
  21. Woohoo!!! I’m doing a revision from band tomorrow to RNY , and I seriously can’t wait to be able to eat without that god awful stuck feeling or my reflux ! Cheers to everyone 🥳🥳🥳
  22. After 5 years with band, I discovered that I had a dilated esophagus leading to revision. I was lucky enough that I didn't have extreme surgical scars or adhesions and the doctor was able to do both band removal and sleeve in one surgery. Just the fact that you have been successful at maintaining your weight speaks volumes. You are obviously active with exercising and keeping the correct diet. Continue what you are doing after removal and you will be fine. Unless, there is a medical reason, I'll bet that your doctor will probably do the sleeve before 1 year. Most doctors will wait 3 - 6 months of healing from the band removal before sleeving. I'm a little surprised that you have to wait 1 year. I would ask more about the wait. As far as my esophagus and healing, I am 7 months out and all my post-op appointments have gone well. Things must have gone back to normal with my esophagus because before discovering the dilated esophagus with band, I was able to eat much more with my band and doctor tells me that my esophagus was functioning as a 2nd stomach. 1/2 cup of anything that I eat is all I can handle, thus, I think my esophagus no longer is functioning as a 2nd stomach. Some words of encouragement: Should you have to wait 1 year out, the wait will be worth it! I know that I repeat myself on most of my posts, but, here goes again, there is a HUGE difference between band and sleeve. The sleeve lifestyle is so much better, IMO. Hang in there, you will do fine. jake
  23. Hi there! I am scheduled for Revision from lap band to gastric bypass on Dec. 12th. I am sooo nervous! I'm self paying so I'm going to Mexico, alone, for the surgery. Can anyone give me some information on how you are doing after your revision, like the recovery period and how much you have lost. I'm really nervous because I was a complete failure with the lap band and I don't want another failed surgery. Any support I can get will be so appreciated.
  24. Hello, my surgery was 5/15/13. Reported at 9:30 for surgery but didn't get in until about 2:30. The doctor thought with the revision it should not take more than 3 hrs but it went 6 hours because the lapband had a lot of scar tissue and was cutting off the hole food went through so I guess it wasn't me that failed the lapband. My husband was a wreck as the staff stopped keeping him informed. The first morning my stomach didn't hurt at all then whatever the surgeon put in it to numb it wore off and none of the pain medicines worked for me. I could not bring myself to eat for the first two days so they took me off my drip line to kind of force me to drink. My husband wants me to drink even when I'm sleeping because he doesn't want the drip line back in and he is ready to go home. I have not bounced back so well after this surgery so even though I knew the band was coming out.....not so sure about the sleeve right now but what is done is done and I have to figure out how to make it work. Saw another lady here my age or a little older who just had the sleeve-she seemed to be doing well.
  25. Yes, definitely do your research and seek out the negative stories as well as the positive ones. Too many people make this decision - and it IS a drastic one - without educating themselves on all possibilities. Complications are rare but that's no comfort to you or your loved ones if you wind up in the 1 percent. I started by researching the band. Being the cautious planner that I am, I did a solid several months of looking into the procedure and honestly, what I found was upsetting. Too many complications, too many repeat surgeries, too many with damage to the stomach and far too many people not losing the weight. When I saw many were revising to sleeve I started researching it as well. And honestly? The first time I read about the procedure I was horrified and thought it was far too drastic. I did some metabolic testing and saw another nutritionist (sixth or seventh time, I think) and did another dieting attempt. During this period, I kept researching the sleeve, just watching and waiting, without really being sure it was right for me. At some point (perhaps it was the results of the metabolic testing or the failure and regain I suffered on yet another diet) I decided to more seriously consider the sleeve. All told, I did a solid year of research on the sleeve and spent several months researching three different doctors before making my decision. I went in knowing what to expect and I feel I had a smooth recovery and adjustment because of that. Well, as smooth as life can be when you find yourself without your usual emotional crutch and unable to indulge in the overeating you enjoyed so much! But it was the right choice for me. Time and research are all that will tell you if you want this surgery. Being cautious is commendable. Being prepared is imperative. I'm very happy and would do it again in a heartbeat. In fact, I'd love to take my mom and sister to get the surgery done, too! But it's easy for me to say that when I suffered no real complications. Good luck. Ask questions and read everything you can find here. There are some old threads here that are immensely informative and still relevant today. Search out all of the experiences you can find and make a choice once you're fully educated on the pros and cons of this surgery. ~Cheri
